    I got lost hiking up a mountain, and I saw a shepherd. I asked him "How far up are we?" and he answered "New mili song." That's how I realised, I already knew the answer. We were at the peak.

    • @RoundSeal
      @RoundSeal 6 months ago +186

      @Predator8you The thing about Mili, afaik, is that they don't give explanations for what their art means, if it means anything at all. They allow the purest form of connection between artist and the experiencer; you could argue that it simultaneously has no meaning at all, and all the meaning in the world. It isn't about anything other than what each of us, individually, sees it as.

    • @Predator8you
      @Predator8you 6 months ago +25

      @RoundSealof course, that’s true about most forms of art. I probably was a bit blunt in my first comment, but I do think it has a different meaning myself. The fact we have different opinions is what makes art so interesting imo

      in my interpretation. the song is saying that it doesn’t deny Damocles is unfitting for the throne. but also, it’s not easy to tell the difficulty of being one with power, a simple sword on a strand of horse hair just won’t do.

For every Cortez, there is many Narvaez)I expect the stars would be much the same as we wouldn’t wait till we have light speed ships and communication then start exploring, we’d go the moment we make a proper sub-light speed one.

    I love how this song mocks the legend of the sword of Damocles. Its not that being a king is an especially dangerous and hard life that only a few could withstand. Anyone can be a king and countless unworthy people have been kings. We don’t want to be kings we just want a life where those in charge see us as people.

    • @alastor8091
      @alastor8091 5 months ago +13

      It mocks it, but I think it's more of the singer being angry, refusing to see the point of view of the people with "everything". It wasn't until like the 1900s rulers stopped being assassinated in their youth, tortured by rivals, or meeting the teeth of the mob. The Sword was very real not too long ago. And I'd also argue it's not always a case of life or death, and more guilt. A king and a common man both have one, but a bad ruler doesn't in the sense that he doesn't care, much like a drug addict no longer has his commoner's sword brcause he doesn't care. The Sword is the pressure of leading a good life and being a good person when it isn't life or death.

    • @dojelnotmyrealname4018
      @dojelnotmyrealname4018 5 months ago

      @alastor8091 The point isn't that the sword wasn't real. It's that it wasn't special. "If I filter the roses from your view, will you see that there's a sword for me too." Everyone can get mugged, killed by a jealous suitor, get in an accident, die randomly. Everyone has a sword.

    • @hi-fe2ek
      @hi-fe2ek 4 months ago +5

      @alastor8091 eh. the song is still valid contextually even before the 20th century. yes they do have risks, but they don't have more risks than the average joe back then. the song is basically saying that rulers have more privilege than commoners, while having the same(one would argue they have less) amount of risks/"sword"

    I already know people are gonna analyze the hell out of this song so I’m gonna put my foot in the door by saying that the name Damocles comes from a courtier under Dionysus I, who is most famous for the proverb known as the Sword of Damocles, where someone says they could do the man’s job far better than he could, and so he let them take the seat for a day, however before he left, he tied a sword above the throne by a single strand of horse hair, representing the constant danger Damocles is in by having the power he possesses.

      As I can gather from my first listen the song seems to be about how Damocles was actually wrong as everybody has great moral responsibilities independently of the role and consequences cannot be measured easily, so the condemnation of the pursue of power made by the already powerful is usually more a systematic imposition of control on the powerless than a symbol of virtue

    Sword of Damocles is an allusion to a story where someone, Damocles, believed that the life of a king was too luxurious and wealthy. The king offered to swap places with Damocles, but Damocles noticed that above the throne where he was sitting is a sword being carried by a lone horsehair which Damocles then dubbed the life of a king a role of great risk.
    The song is basically saying there are some people who shouldn’t have the great power and wealth that other people have earned.

      at least to me it seems like a condemnation of hierarchy as a whole, that the idea that the rich and powerful are uniquely more vulnerable than those they hold power over is nothing more than a deception in order to assuage said subordinates, who are kept from pursuing a reality where they are happy by this concentration of authority

      Indeed, it seems to be Damocles telling the king "Just because I'm not sitting in the throne doesn't mean I don't also have a sword hanging over my head. I have to listen to this more, because Mili seems to be doing the ol' "different voice tones are different narrators who might be the same person".
      The soup of virtue line also reminds me of "If I Was a Rich Man", where the singer laments "I know it is not a sin to be poor, but it is no great honor either". The idea that suffering in poverty is somehow virtuous is very convenient for the wealthy

      @kevinhutagalung5930 those in power often believe they're the only ones fit for the position, and try to make justifications (like the titular 'Sword of Damocles' from the story) about how it's actually so hard and so dangerous for them, claiming a sort of 'martyrship' while completely invalidating or ignoring the struggles of their subjects/constituents who don't have the same access to resources that would provide them any sense of comfort or ability to cope with such.

  • @velvetbirds1780
    @velvetbirds1780 6 months ago +480

    So many people think this song is just a retelling of Damocles when it seems way more likely that it's about the peasant in the story put onto the throne criticizing Damocles for not recognizing his privilege as a king.
    I know there's no official explanation but how else do you guys explain lyrics like "if I filtered out roses from your view, would you see there's a sword for me too?"

    • @maekari
      @maekari 6 months ago +131

      just want to point out that in the story of Damocles, he is the courtier and Dionysius is the king. but yes, the song is essentially disagreeing with the moral of the story. the wealthy have no need to worry about hunger and thus can live “virtuous” lives, but virtue can’t feed the poor even if it does make them happy.

    • @Orion-xm8yz
      @Orion-xm8yz 6 months ago +52

      @maekariI think there’s evidence that the king in the song is referred to as Damocles because the “sword of Damocles” is the narrative they are pushing to justify their rule, that power is a doubled sided burden that can only be handled by the elite.

    • @maekari
      @maekari 6 months ago +30

      @Orion-xm8yzthat is true, i didnt realize that. i originally thought the parts referring to Damocles was told from Dionysius’ perspective and the other lyrics were from Damocles’ perspective. Damocles is definitely the king in the song now that i look at the lyrics more.

      @maekari Not to mention, "Persistence always pays off in a decade or two."
      See any tech company telling you that if you work very hard you too can one day be rich, all while their founders were born into money and connections. The idea that poverty is a failure of character and ambition is a convenient shield.
      It's not as though being a King isn't stressful. It *is* inherently dangerous. But the dangers a sole king faces are innumerably outweighed by the many unknown to him that he will never have to consider. The King himself is blind for not seeing that. Rather than fix the system, he dissuades any attempts to challenge it with Uncle Ben's platitude.
      Everyone has a sword, the King simply sees his as the most important one.

    우리말 번역
    To Your Oblivion
    그대의 무지에
    Open your eyes, dear Damocles
    다모클레스 씨, 눈을 떠 봐요
    Tell me, what's tied to my ceiling?
    내 머리 위에 뭐가 달려 있었나요?
    I've got everything
    모든 걸 쥐어 왔어요
    I've got plenty of the good
    셀 수 없이 좋은 것들과
    Plenty of the worst
    셀 수 없이 나쁜 것들을
    All seemed splendid
    정말이지 아름다워요
    Served on a silver dish
    은 접시에 담겨 온 그것들 전부가
    With each great power
    "그대가 갖게 되는 굉장한 힘은
    Comes a great terror
    굉장한 공포가 되고 말아요"
    That's what they say
    다들 그렇게 말하고는
    They want us to believe
    우리가 믿어 주길 바랐어요
    So what if these dreams I tried reaching out to
    만약 내가 닿으려고 했던 그 꿈들이
    Are light years away from this reality we knew
    우리가 알던 현실과 몇 광년 떨어져 있다면 어떨까요
    Mirror mirror, who's my living proof?
    거울아 거울아, 내 산증인이 누구니?
    So what if I skipped my daily spoonful of virtue
    내가 매일 취해야 하는 선행 한 스푼을 걸렀다면 어떻게 됐을까요
    It's not like being nice will bring me closer to you
    나와 그대와 가까워지도록 하는 친절하고는 거리가 멀게 되겠지요
    Closer to your temporary throne
    그대의 위태로운 왕좌와도
    Closer to a world I can call my own
    내 것이라 할 수 있는 세상과도
    Don't look aside, dear Damocles
    다모클라스 씨, 눈을 피하지 말아요
    I know, your pride begs to disagree
    그래요, 그대의 자존심은 불복을 원하지요
    They've got everything
    다들 모든 걸 쥐어 왔어요
    Ever since all the way from the start
    모든 게 시작된 이래로
    All the way before we were here
    우리가 이곳에 서기 전부터
    Everything that they wished
    그들이 바랐던 전부를
    Everything that we missed
    우리가 놓쳤던 것들을
    I earned it, claimed the blessed
    얻어 냈지요, 축복받았다면서
    With each great power
    "그대가 갖게 되는 굉장한 힘은
    Comes a great terror
    굉장한 공포가 되고 말아요"
    That's what they say
    다들 그렇게 말하고는
    They want us to believe
    우리가 믿어 주길 바랐어요
    If I filtered out roses from your view
    그대 시야의 장밋빛을 걷어 낸다면 그제서야
    Will you finally see there's a sword for me too
    나를 향해 달린 검이 있다는 것또한 알게 될까요
    Waiting at every possible path I pursue
    가능한 모든 길, 내가 추구하는 길목에서 날 기다리는 검을요
    I pulled off my dress, stepped in their new emperor clothes
    난 드레슬 벗고, 똑똑한 사람에게만 보이는 임금님의 옷을 입어요
    You put on my coat
    그대는 내 것이었던 코트를 걸치죠
    We stared at the mirror on their wall
    우린 그들이 벽에 건 거울을 봤고
    Then with a giggle, you said
    그대가 키득거리며 말해요,
    "It doesn't suit you at all"
    "정말 그대완 안 어울리는걸"
    So what if failures today make me a fool
    오늘날의 실수가 날 바보로 만든다면 어떨까요
    Persistence always pays off in a decade or two
    뚝심이란 본디 십 년 이십 년 안에 빛을 보기 마련이죠
    Mirror mirror, show me someone new
    거울아 거울아, 새 사람을 보여주렴
    Hey what if I said that I never want to be you
    내가 결코 그대처럼 되지 않길 바랐었다면 어땠을까요
    'Cause soup of virtue is not gonna keep me full
    선행 몇 스푼도 내 배를 채워 주지 못할 테니까요
    So why don't you step down from that throne
    그러니 부디 왕좌에서 내려와 줄래요
    So you can see me
    그럼 알 수 있을 거예요
    Like the way I see you
    내가 그댈 보는 이 마음을

    What I'm getting from this song is that while the "Sword of Damocles" may be seen a fear to those in power, for the ordinary person there are different kinds of swords, in every aspect in their life that those in power don't recognize. Those who have power either crushed the futures of others to get there or are descended from those who did and crush others to keep and expand that power, using the "Sword of Damocles" as justification for their acquisition of power. The protagonist becomes cutthroat to reach their current position, and wants the oblivious "Damocles" to abdicate the throne, since they do not realize the nature of the power they hold.

      "Open your eyes, dear Damocles

      Hey, what if I told you I never wanted to be you
      'Cause the soup of virtue won't make me full"
      From those lines, my own interpretation goes like; the King is telling the Protagonist (Damocles) that not everything is sunshine and rainbows on the throne even if it was handed to them by their birthright or was completely earned and deserved.
      The King wanted the Protagonist to realize that, but in the end, the Protagonist just wanted to see the King suffer just like how he did because he was never virtuous to begin with- he just wanted the King to abdicate the throne and become pathetic out of hatred and malice because of his ignorance to the burden of responsibility and dangers of the throne

      @keku52 I agree to some extent that Damocles here is meant to be vindictive to an extent, but I also think solely seeing him as such takes away from other lines
      "So what if these dreams I tried reaching out to
      Are light years away from this reality we knew
      Mirror mirror, who's my living proof?"
      Certainly supports your point, as it implies an ideal held back from Damocles due to the monarch (self-evidently proven through the mirror)
      "So what if failures today make me a fool
      Persistence always pays off in a decade or two
      Mirror mirror, show me someone new
      Hey what if I said that I never want to be you"
      I think however that these lines show Damocles as insistent to want to prove that even in his imperfection at a true solution or virtue, the philosophical points the king tried to teach Damocles are not alleviations of his sufferings like he thinks, and that he (or otherwise Damocles as representative for 'the people') are still allowed to pursue the path they think they must take without the ruler's hand, as even if mistakes are made, they strive to create something which will bore fruit in the future. I think the phrase "in a decade or two" matters because those are new generations, generally saying that Damocles and thus the people wish to persist and persevere for something better and new for the new generation to enjoy its bountiful harvests of

      @Orion-xm8yz 6 months ago +22

      @keku52The protagonist is the one speaking throughout the entire song, not the King. This means Damocles is the king in this song, referring more to the concept of the sword of Damocles than the original character of Damocles himself

    • @WakkaMadeInYevon
      @WakkaMadeInYevon 6 months ago +11

      @stalechite Also see;
      "I pulled off my dress, stepped in their new emperor clothes
      You put on my coat
      We stared at the mirror on their wall
      Then with a giggle, you said
      'It doesn't suit you at all'"
      This is likely a reference to Dandelion Girls, Dandelion Boys, another song which condemns those in power. Specifically, how cavalier they are in sending young people off to war.
      In that song, the line is merely thought by the girl, who doesn't want her friend to leave. But she leaves it unsaid, and he returns scarred by the war and believing that even two people left alive would still find a way to fight to the death.
      "Whose future was lost in the pursuit of mine?"
      Here though, the line is spoken by the King, leaving no room for the protagonist to respond. He casually disregards any notion that they could be comfortable on the throne because they don't care to admit that anyone could desire something above their station. The King controls the peoples' fates under the illusion of the Sword. The idea that anyone could take the throne if they simply asked to is nothing but a formality.
      It's also a pretty clear allusion to The Emperor's New Clothes, which is not only about the disconnected worldview and vanity of those in power, but also about their subjects' willingness to lie out of fear of being punished.

    The "Emperor's new clothes" were actually just the emperor being naked, so saying "it doesn't suit you at all" would imply whoever is being spoken to doesn't accept the singer for who she is on the inside. Probably why she's begging him to throw off his own disguise.

    Another absolutely wonderful song.
    Its a nice examination of the false idea that power carries difficulties perpetuated by the story of Damocles, the Emperor's new Clothes, and the myriad other stories that try to describe the hardships of the rich and powerful.
    Those stories are often told to try and project the idea that power carries great burdens yet all those burdens don't truly and honestly compare to the constant struggles of those the power is held over. There is also often a subtle message about the "nobility" of poverty and how "money doesn't bring happiness" but the so called virtue of poverty does nothing to fill bellies or give people what they need. Nor does it matter to be told about it by people who have everything already.
    Content aside the beat of this song is also pretty solid. Going to be on loop for a very long time for me.
