"You couldn’t be more wrong actually, I’m unbelievably sentimental, you know, the best thing would be to actually be as earnest as I feel because I know what I’m doing. Just everything that I do, it knows what it is." This doesn't get talked enough, that's some beautiful personal analysis towards music and art in general really.
This is hitting really hard. “When i was 25 and afraid to go outside.” Now that I am 25, that line hits harder than it ever did. Take care of your mental health everybody. Its rough out here. Give yourself a try.
One of the lines even says something about a 16 year old girl who had the box tattooed on her arm and took her life. The box is the 1975’s signature box. She was a fan too.
its hard to put into words what this song has come to mean to me in the last couple years. from ages 20-26 i struggled a lot with substance abuse of different kinds, mainly heroin and crack, but a little of everything here and there. im 27 and been clean for nearly a year. ive been giving myself a try finally for once in my life and liking what im seeing.
Any time a band changes their sound, everyone loses their shit but it ends up gaining new fans as well as respect from fans that can actually acknowledge the fact that different isn’t bad and the same album over and over is boring. That aside I’m insanely attracted to this video
Or maybe people think the song is bad and 1) expected them to create something better and 2) would have not liked this song even if it wasn't by the 1975
his song writing is literally like nothing else. It's snarky, it mirrors itself, it contradicts itself, it's ironic, it's smart, it's truly a testament to today's culture. He knows EXACTLY what he's doing. it's amazing.
I swear with mostly every song I hear, It takes a few tries for me to actually enjoy it, but with The 1975’s music that enjoyment comes to me instantly.
For those saying that this doesn’t sound like The 1975, I guess that’s true but to me they’re returning to their Drive Like I Do sound at least with this particular single. It’s very gritty especially with the guitar loop. Idk it just feels like they’re back making music they grew up on, there’s a certain carefree nostalgia and innocence to it sonically while the lyrics are introspective as well as retrospective with the key line being “what would you say to your younger self” basically matty saying to himself “hey shit is tough but don’t give up on yourself because you’re going places mate” lol I know it’s not the powerhouse or art piece that people were expecting including myself, but I just think it’s a very inspiring new direction for The 1975
Yes! Also to say “that doesn’t sound like The 1975” is silly since they don’t really subscribe to a genre. Sex doesn’t sound like Love Me, which doesn’t sound like fallingforyou. Them changing their sound constantly is kind of their whole persona. That’s why they never keep a band name for too long.
tjohnnie01 i mean they have this kind of identity as an aesthetically and atmospheric pop/rock band like ava and 30stm - they tend to evolve but their core doesn't care even during their pre-the 1975 days. their second album for me is lackluster than the first tbh so here i'm hoping it'll bounce back and that they'll reinvigorate their style.
the guitar loop is very very very annoying in my opinion. its not raw or gritty like the Sex guitar or even like milk. those were rock and roll. this is very synth rock guitar and idk. its overpowering the vocals and the drums are too weaaaakkk. george can lay down a friggen groove where is that at?
Yes! Who is to say what this band is supposed to sound like anyway? Before they were famous they made some tunes where Matty's voice is almost unrecognizable at first because they were experimenting with different styles. The last album sounded different than the first one so what were people expecting this to sound like? It's called evolution and like you said, it's also reminiscent of Drive Like I Do. We'd all get tired if they just tried to reinvent the first album over and over again. I think the people complaining that this doesn't sound like The 1975 are forgetting that Matty has said (many different times) that they have an eclectic taste in music and he thinks genres are dead.
you have no idea how many times your music has saved me. i'm currently going through another severe depressive episode and somehow its 2:30 am and i ended up with this song. it just reminded me that there's something left inside of me that still wants to live. i haven't been able to move or get out of bed for days but today this song had me dancing, jumping and singing around my room. and i know i am by far not the only one you literally saved over the years. thanks so much guys for your music. keep trying ❤
This song has been following me around ever since it came out in 2018, and it’s honestly such a soothing feeling. Like whenever I listen to it I feel both old and young, inspired to what lies ahead and behind myself. I changed countries, hair colors, environments, mental conditions, but this one has something that stays the same and that feels like it’s your own voice singing. Beautiful, Matty, beautiful.

I just found this song but I love it so much because the overall message is "you're gonna make mistakes kid just learn from them and give life a good run"

can people stop with this "if you're a true fan" bs and just enjoy the music, who cares when you discovered them or if you know the songs "deeper meaning", just enjoy the music
Brian Keogh Some ppl are complaining about how long we have to wait to hear new stuff, which is annoying bc The 1975 always do things a certain way. Yeah, enjoy the music, but she was being honest. You aren't a true fan if you aren't gonna respect their craft/process. It doesn't have much to do with a deeper meaning/when you discovered them.

this song really came to me in a moment of darkness im 24 years old and i still haven’t figured out what i am or what the fuck im doin with life and everyone’s doin them and im just stuck in time depression anxiety social anxiety overthinking everything but i have this modeling gig for a small business and im going to do it and stop being scared to go outside in going to give myself a try for once because i never did anything i love singing dancing acting modeling im done being scared and sad and just angry at myself bless u for this song
Give Yourself A Try is a BOP. Keep in mind Love Me was the first song released from iliwys, which isn’t really reflective of how the rest of the album sounds
I feel like this song has a deep meaning and there’s such a positive vibe about it, i love the lyrics. They’re somehow what i needed now. Actually everything they’ve written about mfc is witty and perfect. And i don’t see the resemblance with gerard way but damn, they’re my two favorite artists in the world, so why not. ALSO TWO ALBUMS I’M HYPED
this song hits me hard, one of my friends took her life and i almost took mine for depression, anxiety and i get addicted to drugs too. i feel in many ways like this song, so i'm definitely gonna give myself a try

"What would you say to your younger self" This hits too deep.Kind of ironic I'm 17 now but the times I've messed up and took things for granted, this line just made me fall in love with this song...
I was nineteen when this song came out, I didn't understand the words very well at the time, unfortunately now I understand them as my mental state has worsened over the years. I have lost many friends, this sometimes makes me feel alone, not to mention suicidal thoughts but rediscovering this song gave me relief. I’ll give myself a try, we don’t know what will come tomorrow.

this song is about finding yourself, trying to stay still in this weird tenebrous life, while your mind is getting craziest than ever. this song is about nights when you can't sleep because of your thoughts so you just get older and stay awake, just painting your face or your hair, smoking or doing drugs... and realising stuff. feeling lost and misunderstood. i've been there for so many times...
I remember when they put a 30 day countdown timer on their website and no one knew what was going to come out on June 1st, 2018. After loving their first 2 albums so much I was so excited to see what was coming next. This song and video dropped and literally changed my life. Give yourself a try is the one song that never fails to inspire me and make me feel grateful for being alive. Rock and roll is dead, god bless THE 1975.
This is so true and I think some people don’t understand, he is expressing himself in the way he should. He knows what he is doing and everything he does is on purpose. He’s a lot wittier than people give him credit fort
I think this song is bloody fantastic. Lyrically, the 1975 is one of the best. I'm still trying to fully understand this song just like pretty much every single song they have released in the past. A lot of deep meaning behind them all and I love it. Plus, I can't stop watching Matty dance. I hope he never loses that. It's too precious.
BASSETTI8 this one is free to interpretations matty said :) also in my opinion its very full in its lyrics. Like literal in most lines just think about it like he took all the main important parts of a sentence. Like if the sentence was " I did way too many drugs in my teens and twentys. I really wish i got something more out of it all though" then the lyric would be "i experimented with pills & thrills. But im still quiet still & the same". But there are some lines like the "seeds & beans" line that take more of a closer look in my interpretation :)
@@letsstartawarsaidmaggieoneday "stealing" guess you (and apparently several thousand other people in this comments section) have never heard of sampling? it isn't stealing whatsoever
@@letsstartawarsaidmaggieoneday I was wondering the same. I love the band, so much. But it would be nice if they'd credit the people from where they took the music to enhance their music and tribute the old legends. :/
1975 is such a fun cool band that just dont give a fuck about what people think when it comes to expressing themselves they are lit af and the music is wonderful they came a long way and stayed dedicated now they on the radio and more well known im so inspired!!

6 years ago I went to my first concert with my friends to see you guys. I felt something I had never felt before, after that I was changed and I wonder how much of the rediculous beautiful intensity I have in my life now stemmed from feeling really in my body but so much more than that for the first time that sweaty summers night 6 years ago.

[Chorus]
Won't you give yourself a try?
Won't you give yourself a try?
Won't you give yourself a try?
Won't you give?
[Bridge]
'And what would you say to your younger self?'
Growing a beard's quite hard
And whiskey never starts to taste nice
And you'll make a lot of money, and it's funny
'Cause you'll move somewhere sunny and get addicted to drugs
And spend obscene amounts on fucking seeds and beans online
[Chorus]
So just give yourself a try
Won't you give yourself a try?
Won't you give yourself a try?
Won't you give?
(omg, the red hair!)

Give Yourself A Try is a BOP. Keep in mind Love Me was the first song released from iliwys, which isn’t really reflective of how the rest of the album sounds

Also keep in mind the album isn’t even finished yet 😂
I feel like this song has a deep meaning and there’s such a positive vibe about it, i love the lyrics. They’re somehow what i needed now. Actually everything they’ve written about mfc is witty and perfect. And i don’t see the resemblance with gerard way but damn, they’re my two favorite artists in the world, so why not. ALSO TWO ALBUMS I’M HYPED
dana nana I’m sorry but what does mfc mean?
Ditte Nielsen music for cars :)
dana nana oh yeah, thank you :)

LYRICS!!!!!!!!!
You learn a couple things when you get to my age
Like friends don't lie and it all tastes the same in the dark
When your vinyl and your coffee collection is a sign of the times
You're getting spiritually enlightened at 29
So just give yourself a try
Won't you give yourself a try?
Won't you give yourself a try?
Won't you give?
I found a grey hair in one of my zoots
Like context in a modern debate, I just took it out
The only apparatus required for happiness
Is your pain and fucking going outside
And getting STDs at 27 really isn't the vibe
Jane took her own life at 16
She was a kid who had the box tattooed on her arm
And I was 25 and afraid to go outside

i was looking for this comment oh my gosh thank you
Haven’t had music from them since 1975
I was nineteen when this song came out, I didn't understand the words very well at the time, unfortunately now I understand them as my mental state has worsened over the years. I have lost many friends, this sometimes makes me feel alone, not to mention suicidal thoughts but rediscovering this song gave me relief. I’ll give myself a try, we don’t know what will come tomorrow.
Just vibed with the song when I was 17. But now that I am 20, I was sort of.....fuckedddd. I totally feel you mate. I lost many of my friends.

Saiguen Stunning thank you😊
Noah Stolee Obviously not all of them though
Im so glad that a band like 1975 exists these days, especially Matthew Healy gives memories about the 70s and 80s with his rockstar attitude :)
yeah, the 1010s. totally.
How did we miss the 1010s? they were such a great time for rock
Happy-sad vibes like the cure, surely i see a bit Robert Smith in Mathew
The 1010s were really a classic time for rock

Zoots**
Its zoot btw not suit its a joint in the uk thats what we call a spliff/joint a zoot
But thankyou for the lyrics
this song is about finding yourself, trying to stay still in this weird tenebrous life, while your mind is getting craziest than ever. this song is about nights when you can't sleep because of your thoughts so you just get older and stay awake, just painting your face or your hair, smoking or doing drugs...
and realising stuff. feeling lost and misunderstood.
i've been there for so many times...
The Poisonous Kiss give yourself a try
The Poisonous Kiss, then why the fuck are the lyrics so damn dark?!
The Poisonous Kiss this is me now. Thanks for the 1am meltdown
oh shut up.
because it is a dark moment from someone's life. or maybe just for me
(because you take some choices in those moments, when you feel vulnerable)
LYRICS ARE ON POINT

Turn the volume up and dance to it in your apartment!
*IT'S A BOP*
I remember when they put a 30 day countdown timer on their website and no one knew what was going to come out on June 1st, 2018. After loving their first 2 albums so much I was so excited to see what was coming next. This song and video dropped and literally changed my life. Give yourself a try is the one song that never fails to inspire me and make me feel grateful for being alive. Rock and roll is dead, god bless THE 1975.
man this album will be lit af... //
I was going to comment about his appearence but honestly... It's Matty. What did we expect.
888 777 Wowo okay. I made a comment. I don't know what else I would except as a reply. Respect? Nah who's got that nowdays anyway.
888 777 oml what
888 777 lmao queer satanism dude TF?! Have you heard their songs?!!
satanism? Why? Cause their songs hint a rock vibe? Lmaoooo
This is so true and I think some people don’t understand, he is expressing himself in the way he should. He knows what he is doing and everything he does is on purpose. He’s a lot wittier than people give him credit fort

As a troubled, depressed, disordered 23 year old, this song is terrifying but also gives me a lot of hope. I love the 1975 haha ❤️❤️❤️
Hope you gave yourself a try ❤️❤️

Wow that hurt

Lauren McLachlan very funny!
Those two events are the same thing
Harry Pope haha, sadly you’re right
Best comment so far
Harry Pope Oh yeah you're right actually... I can't reword it 😂
‘Like context in a modern debate, I just took it out’ is a fantastic lyric. Fucking great.
I love that part probs best line of the sing
BASSETTI8 why do you think these lyrics are good?
Seeds: Cannabis. Beans: MDMA/Ecstasy
nick why do you ask that question out of nowhere? Do you consider them bad?
yung goro because I'm confused as to how these lyrics are good? They aren't clever, or meaningful. Sounding poetic isn't being poetic
N this is why i will always fuck with the 1975. Sometimes growth n change is good
idk why you’re all complaining this is a BOP AND A HALF
Just noticed the beginning of this song is just like Joy Division’s “Disorder”
The 1975 really honoring LEGENDS🙏❤️
Angel Ozone stealing it to make them seem edgy
@@letsstartawarsaidmaggieoneday "stealing" guess you (and apparently several thousand other people in this comments section) have never heard of sampling? it isn't stealing whatsoever
Scout Where’s the credit? The mention? The “this is sampled from - “
@@letsstartawarsaidmaggieoneday I was wondering the same. I love the band, so much. But it would be nice if they'd credit the people from where they took the music to enhance their music and tribute the old legends. :/
They do a cracking 'I Remember Nothing', too
my last four brain cells trying to get through finals
audrey faye Too bad I only have two, one in the wheel chair and the other pushing it. :/

Jake Aarons JAJAJA
Jake Aarons thank you for this comment.
Hashhahahahahah
Jake Aarons no
1975 is such a fun cool band that just dont give a fuck about what people think when it comes to expressing themselves they are lit af and the music is wonderful they came a long way and stayed dedicated now they on the radio and more well known im so inspired!!
Angel mydarling that's why they made a song expressing exclusively PC opinions and beliefs acceptable by the "intelligencia" or cultural elite of modern western society. Among which includes cultural establishments of media. Music. Movies. Etc. the modern and present modems of cultural exchange.
Thanks for 96 likesss ayeeee
6 years ago I went to my first concert with my friends to see you guys. I felt something I had never felt before, after that I was changed and I wonder how much of the rediculous beautiful intensity I have in my life now stemmed from feeling really in my body but so much more than that for the first time that sweaty summers night 6 years ago.
I didn’t know Hayley Williams joined The 1975 🔥🔥🔥
Jonny Eakins lmao 😂
oh no HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
STOP

"Jane took her own life at 16... And I was 25 and afraid to go outside" I felt indentified.
Okay, so the next trends in music for next 1-2 years will be post-punk vibes mixed with VHS styled images.
Макар Лисицин that was already a thing my dude
Dany Espinosa. What other artists are doing it?
Kero Kero Bonito dabbled in it on their new EP recently, for one. (The video for Only Acting is a good example.)
Heyitsalisa The moment I saw the font style I instantly remember Mura Masa. Not sure if it is count as vhs styled images
This is what happens in Mattys head when he sits in silence during interviews...
tacticalgame when does he ever sit in silence
your opinions are less appreciated than drakes son.
I absolutely fucking love this song. I fucking love this band and I fucking love everything about them.
This Joy Division song sounds a little different doesn't it?
The joy division song has a cooler bass line
it’s just sampled
It does sound extremely similar to Disorder now that I think about it.
@@Proto-Martyr The lead riff is the same as Disorder.
It's stolen ! I wonder if they paid for it ? I saw them live yesterday and I noticed it straight away
Ik some people might not like the new music they're coming out with but I personally love the fact that they're so versatile.....maybe just me
yess baby yess
ahhh WAE i absolutely agree
they are immensely talented
i cant believe people just want the same sounds as the the previous albums
ppl cannot be pleased i swear

The album isn't even out yet
I love their new stuff!!!
The whole album will be a social criticism. this song represents the growth of Matty in his opinion of the current society.
FlamerElectroHD this song is about him stopping taking shit loads of drugs like there’s no weird deep meaning it’s literally about drug addiction
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAAMEN.
Em Matty talks about suicide, drugs and vegan's people lol, not only drugs, Matty knows society it's really dark and shit in these days
FlamerElectroHD no i mean he literally gave an interview where he said it was about quitting prescription pills
Em There's a deepest meaning in this song, you need to listen it, you need to really feel it
