I think it's wild that the community don't take this seriously, I feel that a lot of my love for WSM is lost.
What favour are Collin giving some athletes? Remember that he is a judge at WSM he judged Thor at the Viking press in 2017... I have looked a lot at that press an can't see any dobbelt dip..
But the way Mark have done this is pretty bad and it's a bad situation for the Stoltmann's I think.

One of the primary considerations is who holds power. In this circumstance, the promoters and organizations who hire and pay strongmen are the folks who genuinely hold the power of the purse. When wondering who is creating poor circumstances, complications, infighting, and other dramas, you can almost always look to those who hold the purse.
Most of the times it is the case.
All this is true, but it doesnt make it right, when you have a UK promoter actively favoring UK strongmen, thats a problem
You can easily pull the groups from a hat. Have the 6 "number 1 seeds", draw one for each group. Repeat the same with "number 2 seeds". Then draw the remaining guys. Most serious sports do it like this.
The bigger picture that fans will relate too, is the Thor Eddie contraversie, where Thor accused Colin Bryce being biased and changing events to suit Eddie, If Colin said he would help Luke when it cam to the World Strongest Man, then the common denominator is Colin Bryce, no as professional Strongman LB and channel we as viewer would not expect negative feedback, but I for one have said it for years Colin is not doing the sport any favours, in his favour similar happened with Pudz and Doctor Dug, so there's nothing new about it, sadly I stand by my views, and have not watched the Xmas show in years, the last was Z's last win as even then only the final, I prefer the Arnold's, WUS, and Fortissimus, IFSA and the others that died because of stir competition and such paid unprofessionalism....
Dougy used to do the same thing. He was caught in 1990 setting the final event so JPS won (RIP to those two and OD Wilson). It isn't just Colin, there's a board of folks that make these decisions. I don't trust anything Colin says though. He feels like a politician when he talks. Poor athletes can't really be blamed if they get a money offer. The offer is made by the organizers, not the athletes.

And poor OD, He for sure was the Strongest, but couldn't RUN but WSM was and still is an athlete competition, but athletes and some fans are mislead by the title World Strongest Man, not so... I still don’t get how there are WSM fans that easily dismiss what’s very clearly super sketchy stuff behind Bryce and WSM just because they happen to like Luke
Everything is still developing, we will see in the near future how that audio recording will effect WSM.
Luke was trying to put that organization down gently but then the conversation Musta ran onto the point where he felt he needed to offer a reason why that would suit them so I think that’s why he took a shot at world strongest man set up

Oh, so the best excuse he could come up with was accusing Colin of blackmail/corruption? Yeah, really good guy that Luke is.
Everyone knows Luke was speaking honestly... if you want to believe it or not.
The problem is that Luke's explanation doesn't add up with what he said and implied on the audio. E.g. saying that the Stoltmans would get more favorable events at World's, or that Collin didn't "promise" that they would get more favorable groups at World's but did "say" that they would (implying that it's underhanded rather than based on some rule). There's other stuff in there too but you get the idea. This is in the context of a niche sport where fans were already suspicious regarding how events and groups are selected. Not good for the sport.
Problem is this was ment to be a 30 min private conversation which ended up being recorded, people still keep thinking he is bent which is far from the truth 2 companies put him in a tough spot
@@petershortland478 The problem with that is that Luke's explanation doesn't actually explain what I mentioned and it's difficult to see how more context would make it less bad. Getting more favorable events at the most well-recognized competition in the sport because you play ball with GL (his words, not anyone else's) is simply not ok.
I don't think it's unreasonable for Luke to go for it, since he feels like he got screwed in the previous year. He just wants to win. But the corruption at the top is what it is.

Here are some funny points that I can't be arsed to string together into a coherent block of text:
1. World's Strongest Man is a TV show, first and foremost.
2. WSM uses a heat system instead of hosting a direct head-to-head competition.
3. Giants Live may have too much influence.
4. Strongman, as a sport, has no governing body whatsoever.
5. WSM has a poor qualification system.
6. Strongmen are among the least paid professional athletes in the world.
7. Strongman is not standardized at all.
8. Luke Stoltman has made a few contradictory statements (like stating 2017 WSM was fair, and then stating Colin organized Eddie's victory).
9. This "leak" was posted after the groups were posted publicly, possibly in an attempt to show the Stoltman brothers were given "easy groups".
10. WUS is a competing organization, so Mark Boyd is just trying to stir controversy and to discredit WSM for WUS's benefit.
11. Recording a private call and then releasing a damning snippet of it to the public is a slimy move.
12. Who are the victims here? WSM will go on, WUS will go on, but Luke's focus is definitely affected negatively.
13. Brian Shaw doesn't like WUS, and it appears many top strongmen are seeing Mark in a negative light after this.
14. Will this affect WUS negatively?
15. I wonder what Don Idrees has to say about this.
16. Luke claimed GL has other athletes on retainer as well. I want total transparency -- who are they and what are they getting?!

I believe when Luke mentioned the benefit Eddie received he was talking about how giants live helped to push his personal brand, the same way WWE promotes their wrestlers and the UFC promotes their star fighters.
For someone who can’t be arsed, I think you summed it up very well, and agree with everything. I personally just can’t get over someone I though was a friend, recording something and using it against me. I couldn’t do it, but perhaps Im too loyal, or just weak.

I have no issue with the retainer but I have a serious issue with the stoltmans getting preferred events and preferred groups. It's cheating plain and simple.
I think Luke was more or less pandering to the lad. He didn't want to do WUS and It sounded worse than it was. Strongman is in a better place now than it was ten years ago. Lets just keep moving forward

Mark Boyd was wrong to do this to Luke on the eve of WSM. Whatever Boyd's beef is with Colin and Darren, it was an utter dick move to potentially harm Luke's competition - Luke is blameless in this.
If it was a business move to attract more attention to wus then it has spectacularly backfired - they have guaranteed that the Stoltmans who are two of the biggest draws in strongman will boycott any future shows - way to go.
Personally, i'll no longer bother with any wus events, they can go and shite.
Really? Sure, is recording a private conversation then publishing it for max impact bad? Yes. Could the reason for such an action be good? Yes.
Go check out what WSM did to Bill Kazmaier and OD Wilson, 2017 and 2022 is just something minor in comparison.
@@e.k.8917 I'm not defending WSM and their past indescretions, all I'm saying is that Mark Boyd was bang out of order here; from what I've witnessed he has lost the respect of many of the top athletes - even Big Loz who has been a huge supporter of wus in the past didn't seem too pleased with Boyd's actions.
I don't know what has gone on behind the scenes but throwing Luke under the bus like this was a low class move and has reflected very badly upon wus.
Luke, in his own words, said what they were doing was "sneaky" and "shitty". He knew what they were doing was not above board.
Now, he can say what he wants, but that doesn't change how he himself viewed the situation. Saying that he was just telling the guy what he wanted to hear is a cop out meant to save face.

How about when they made the competitors log press on a tiny ledge of a tall castle or when they made a toss-over bar event on a platform on the sea knowing Bill had seasickness or when they did those hammer lifts over fingers or etc.? Bill was competitive, the only real danger I am aware of is during the team competition when he was shoving with Magnus(I think), and dropped an object on his partner OD, but that is unfortunate if anything.
@X Ennial That same group of people you just described are actively working to make this "made up sport" more mainstream. It is more popular now than it has ever been and there is more money involved now than there has ever been.
Those standing in the way of that need to be culled.
And every single sport was "made up" at one time.
Picking group selection based on seeding makes perfect sense to help get a balanced final. The question is did those athletes on a retainer get favourable treatment purely as part of the deal? Need to hear from colin next i think.
WSM needs to come out and address this after the final and at the very least move to a system of transparency and fairness regarding their qualification and group seeding process.
My opinion on this is, while the audio recording being released without consent is a low blow, it’s not something that should surprise anyone because if mark didn’t do it someone else likely would have showed what’s going on in one way or another in the future with possibility even more damage being done. Everyone should be full aware that nothing you say in range of your or anyone else’s phone is safe from being known. You are all being recorded so mark being willing to take the hit here to release information on corruption (if it’s true which I’m 98% sure it is, look at 2017) is something his conscious felt was right. It’s understandable, even if it’s not the cleanest way of going about it.

Mark should not have done that to Luke. Very uncool. But it doesn't surprise me about WSM rigging the events to favor an athlete. Everyone knows, whether they want to admit it or not knows WSM rigged 2017 for Hall primarily by replacing the load and drag with the squat
The load and drag was replaced by the tire flip if I’m not mistaken

@@ianthompson6288 if that were true than events wouldnt be such a big deal. But Eddie's win was rigged. He never even placed at Arnold's, couldnt get past Thor at Europes. They say how much the load and drag was going to hurt him after the heats and switched it to a better event for him.

I haven't forgotten. Every time they win a show, I wonder if they had help. Which is a shame...they seem like really good guys. And Tom is a beast. It casts a shadow on Eddie, too.
I was quite disappointed by how part of the strongman community, fans and athletes, reacted to this issue. Trying to mislead, change the narrative and shifting blame. I was relieved watching your take on this, found it to be the most balanced.

It's been clear for quite a while that those giants live associated competitions aren't clean let's say but worst part for me is that luke didn't own up to what he did and didn't adres the fact that he clearly accepted colins offer. Im not saying that the owes us as fans apology or anything but if you are going to make a video about the issue than leave no stone unturned.

There’s no world where 2nd place at a national competition should be worth more than being a finalist at the previous wsm. Giants live can determine seeding all they want but that’s not going to mean it isn’t suspicious when they don’t invite wsm finalists to compete at the giants live shows to get better seeding the next year or region lock seeding so that the people you want get better groups

Well if you think this is crazy wait till you find out that terry todd planned the 2002 Arnold strongman and helped mark henry train with the actual implements. The other athletes never trained with the axle that doesn’t spin, the inch dumbbell etc. That’s a heck of an advantage

Few things that are inescapable in my opinion. Mark Boyd's main interest is WUS. Whether this helps or hinders isn't clear. Timing seems bad, but damaging Giants Live may be his main goal and the Stoltmans are collateral damage to this.
Luke said what many have suspected. Inplausable to me that he made up such details simply to get out of appearing at a WUS show. If he did, then it still looks bad that he would just make such claims. Feel sorry for him, in that, it came out before WSM, but that is no excuse for what was said.
Colin is a character and seems like an OK bloke, but does have an air of being a bullshit artist. His main interest is Giants Live. Reteiners are fine, but it does introduce a conflict of interest where as event director/head referee for WSM he benefits greatly if a Giants Live "exclusive athlete" wins WSM. What Luke said is further proof that Colin does has some sway in WSM athlete, group and event selection, which can benefit, somewhat, certain athletes, if he so chooses.
It does appear that Luke has a favorable group to make it to the finals, unfortunately. Tom should have the easier group as last years champion. Right?
Each group had 2 of the top 10 seeds, and Luke having performed very well at GL comps, is one of the top 5, meaning all of his competitors are seeded below him. As is the case for Tom, Brian, Oleksii and Martins.
@@PH34RB I would seed Novikov ahead of Luke, but he gets Bishop, Kearney, and Mitchell in his group. While Luke only had Evan Singleton.

Evan an and Luke have had a lot of podiums/ wins at Giants Live over last year. They were probably ranked 5th and 6th. I believe it works 1-5 in groups 1-5. Then revers so 6th in group 5 and 10th in group 1. As an advantage to higher ranking. Maybe giants live have too much influence but they’ve done a lot for the sport and doubt anyone complaining could do a better job

We can only speculate what was the goal. The sport is growing rapidly and there is a lot more money getting involved, so there will be more drama and cutthroat behaviour.
@@LalasBrothers I was thinking that too. I'm glad it's growing. Strong people and power lifter was family thing. bring a lunch find out about new ideas/ supplements run into people that change gyms or moved. A supportive group how can we save it without punishing people?
As a strongman competitor we literally beat ourselves up all year around for peanuts ,basically w do it for free . Maybe a sponsor here or there helps out with supplements but we get basically nothing! Why is it a bad thing for giants live to pay athletes? Their pro athletes and if they want to get paid then so what ! This has been SO overblown by the media ! Not a big deal people let's keep it moving forward and grow our amazing sport and not tear it down

Who said it was bad to pay athletes? Please address the favortism in group selection and events Luke and Tom are getting - ya know the same favortism that landed Eddie his fake WSM and not locked out deadlift. WSM and Giants Live have been a cancer to this sport - especailly since 2017. The world of strongman would be miles ahead without them
It's not the paying of the athletes, it's the potential favouritism toward certain athletes. I don't believe it myself, you still have to beat everyone and the heats are arranged by seeds.

Most people just don't care about where they get their money from. We just want to see 👀 them in competition
This is bad for the sport because it creates a divide between promoters, athletes, and fans. There will be a group that supports Luke that feels that this is a misunderstanding and there will be those that will feel this is blatant corruption and no longer believe the title(s) won at worlds strongest man or Giant's Live are credible. This will lead to some, not all, no longer watching WSM, Giants, or WUS which will be bad for the business side leading to less revenue which creates less opportunities for the athlete's.
They need to get rid of heats. 30 guys, a week of events. 1 table. Works well for crossfit games which handles the live stream/tv better.
Most of the strongman competition are done the way you wrote. Only WSM has heats and final format.

Im a 30+ years fan and i will not say that i know every thing. But the way and the moment Mark did this....its just bad.
Why are you all trying to stand up for Luke? He was literally getting paid money to promote Giants in exchange for an advantage at Worlds just like they did with Eddie, in what world is that not morally unethical and plain corruption and cheating? It doesn’t matter what happened for the other 29 minutes, we all heard the exact same thing. He knew that was the deal and that is corruption and cheating.

Even if it was my favorite competitor which has been Martins for a while, I would lose all respect for him, I would stop following him and expect him to drop out of the competition. Honestly it’s more pathetic than anything that they wanted an advantage probably because they know they keep losing to Martins which in my eyes would make my win mean so much less if either of the brothers win at Worlds.

I don't think paying a retainer is a bad thing at all. More money to strongmen who boost the sport, the better.

The one thing left is Colin explaining the comment about preferential events. Also agree that I think Mark has been trying to tackle it for months but has not had any traction so just decided to release it.
Shitty move, but I just can't see how those words were said but don't mean what it seems like they mean. How could Mark coerce Luke in to saying something like that that isn't true? Even if a small snippet... I hope it's not true though. Would be a real shame.

For me its a big problem if there is corruption in how the heats and events are chosen. To me it seems that both Stoltmans got the easiest groups this year. Colin seems fishy to me tbh
your on every video saying the same shit, everyone is doing the same events in the heats, the groups are based of seedings. what more do you muppets want? none of the groups are easy

I think it's a major conflict of interest having Colin Bryce in charge of the qualifiers (GL), and the WSM finals too. At the very least this should be different people/organizations. Current system is too open to abuse and greed as we've seen.

I like the Shaw Classic Format, 16 Athletes, 8 events, two of which are for max, and the events are heavier than at WSM.
Shaw Classic has normal strongman competition format.
@@LalasBrothers As a fan from the States, WSM Finals, Arnold or Rogue are only 10 Athletes and usually 5 or 6 events is more of the shows I was comparing. My point was more of I'd like to see a 16-20 WSM final with no groups heats and 8 or 10 events over 4 days. Two days on, one day off, and then the final two days. Squat, Deadlift, Log, Bus Pull, Stones, Grip, and two other miscellaneous events like Farmers, Husafell, Fingers, Keg Toss, etc
The problem as I see it is you have a competition where the promoter owns the competition sets the events sets the rules and controls the athletes. It's a bit like betting on a horse race where the track the horses and jockeys are owned by the same person. We just don't know what's being said behind closed doors. Eg you let him win this competition and you can win the next
I can never understand why WSM is not incorporated under the Olympics. Get it properly organised, well veted individuals and properly drugs tested.
The Olympics are ridiculously corrupt. And everyone there is on gear.

We haven't seen that for a long time in WSM... Maybe the events are tailored for the Stoltmann's ... Luke said that they are chummy with Colin.... Is Colin judging this year to ??????????🤬
I am not satisfied with his answer to be honest. He didnt say anything basically. Didnt say nothing about what he meant when he said about Collin setting up wsm groups and events for them, why he mentioned Eddie etc. Also when you look this years groups, Stoltmans really got "lucky". Which is very weird. Groups need to be drawn in a livestream, from a 2 or 3 bowls. In first there are the best/strongest ones, in second guys with much potential and in third novices. Really sketchy looking for now... BTW Vytas looking HUGE!

It's not uncommon for a organisation to have a retainer and various agreements, but favourable events, it's a bit sus. I like the Stoltmans but look they have exceptionally easy groups which makes that out of context audio recording sound awful.
Until we hear the full audio it's not easy to decide, but hey this is the internet who cares about reason haha

Recording the phone call was a scummy thing to do, there is no question about that.
If that's the way he has to do business then he should be avoided at all costs by everyone.
Without Colin and Darren strongman would not be what it is today, yet they get little appreciation for their work.
I know Colin personally, and know how things work.
Anyone who thought that the groups were randomly assigned, has clearly never taken a moment to actually think about it.
Doing that would make for a terrible show.

Sure even in motorcycle racing some riders get a show up fee just to ride whether they win or not. As for the grouping that is decided by the heats. They can't cook it because the competitors win and that is what decides the groups. Luke does well and is good for the sport and they all encourage each other and they all want to win well as in have a challenge and not win against an underdog. What's the point, that's not winning at all. That fella Mark is well out of order doing that. Boils down to blackmail. I'd get the police involved there Luke.
It sounds like Mark Boyd is jealous and trying to stir things up and muddy peoples good names. Luke has already come out and explained what he said and why he said it. He spoke freely not knowing that some snake was recording it for his own means, that should speak volumes and why is no one asking that?
