This is what makes Aotearoa, New Zealand so unique. It’s all our identity as New Zealanders . It’s become our cultural heritage! It identifies us from the rest of the world! It makes us a nation!
I learned this song in school in New Zealand in '91, which I only just learned was actually the year Wiremu Te Tau Huata passed away. To this day, I sing it to my daughters as a lullaby every night.
This is my 3 year old daughters favourite waiata and video. She think all the tangata are wonderful as they are. She is very drawn to the marae, can anyone tell me where this is? at 1.36min. Ngā mihi. Kara
As an American learning Maori. This made me cry
That was amazing, thank you Americans for singing our song and getting the words and pronunciation right!!! well done, from a Kiwi in Oz.

Are we just going to ignore that they got the words wrong or…?
The words are correct. The version we were taught at school was wrong. The Ministry of Education got it wrong. Imagine that.
