- Music by Charles Gounod
Conducted by Sir Charles Mackerras, from the Royal Opera House, 1994
Famous production with Roberto Alagna : Romeo, Leontina Vaduva : Juliette...
Enjoy Roberto's performance in what might be his best characterization ever : the best of Romeos to me (and a lot others) with a wonderful diction (I'm French, you can believe me !)
Leontina Vaduva was also magnificent in the role of Juliette
I have this DVD and it's one of the most beautiful productions of any opera I have ever listened to! If you're wondering whether you should buy it I highly recommend!
Le meilleur Roméo de tous les temps !
This is perfection!
Robertino just the best.
Alagna is rightly considered one of the finest Romeo’s ever. Leontina Vaduva made a perfect Juliet despite some shrillness in the high notes.
However for those who haven’t heard or seen Araiza as Romeo you should check out the bits that are available on UTube. Tragically there seems to be no complete recording of Araiza in this part but his technique is second to none. Ditto his voice and his acting. Where Alagna has the edge is the passion and the youthful appearance and the ringing high notes. But Araiza, as he was in every role he attempted, very very good.
A marveleus performance
KE MERAVIGLIA QUI ALAGNA! NON CI SONO PAROLE! OPERA MERAVIGLIOSA!
Perfection
Roberto!
Great tenor, great Romeo bravo
Le grand ALAGNA en 1994 .
MB.
Cierto!
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Bravo!!!!
Unfortunately time goes by, and for sopranos and tenors it's a real b*itch! Here he was absolutely fantastic! Also at the MET in 2007 he was VERY good, but not as good as here.
I just listened to the 2014 concert version of Romeo. Here in London he was 31, in Madrid he was 51...Of course he is not the same of 20 years prior, but to say that he was "l'ombre de lui-même" it's not fair!
ROMEO
Ah! day of mourning and honor and alarms,
My heart is breaking with pain!
Unjust stop that too late disarms us,
You put the height to this day of misfortune!
I see perish in blood and tears
All the hopes and all the wishes of my heart!
THE DUKE
Ah! day of mourning and honor and alarms,
I see flow and my blood and theirs!
Too just stop where their weapons dull,
You come too late in this day of misfortune!
By drowning her in blood and tears
It is the city that is struck in my heart!
CAPULET
Ah! day of mourning and honor and alarms,
Unjust stop which too late we disarm, etc.
STÉPHANO, BENVOLIO, CHORUS
Ah! day of mourning and honor and alarms,
My heart is breaking with pain, etc.
THE DUKE
You will leave the city tonight.
ROMEO
O despair! Exile! Exile!
No! I will die
But I want to see her again!
CAPULET AND CHORUS
The peace? no! no! no! no! never!
..
Not honor but horror.
the only great romeo
I assume you simply forgot Jussi Bjoerling...
Erika Takacs there was only on great Romeo , Franco Corelli. But I give him credit he got the note !
Sylvie Basyl what about his recording of Faust with Sutherland ? And his recording of Carmen with Price ? As well as his recording of Romeo Et Juliet with Freni ?
@@Ettoredipugnar We speak about Romeo, it seems . When I listen to Corelli in this role, I look for Romeo. I wait for a young lover man, not a heroic warrior.
brilliant all round , just a tad too slow Check out "Boston university s " take on this opera on you tube ,probably my favourite "Enjoy
Ahhh! No paroles! Young Alagna! Where is his voice now???
He might still have it. I heard a recent boheme, I think from last year, in which he completely sang as he sang here. He probably sings different with heavier roles which do not suit his liric voice. Changes his aproach heavier roles. Imo, he does this whenever he wishes.
"alarme" … "désarme" c'est un peu faux, non ?
Are you all deaf?
No. Why ?
fyi, Roberto Alagna received the most prestigious British theater prize, the Laurence Olivier Prize, for this performance (Outstanding Achievement in Opera)
Best Romeo ever! Bravo Roberto!!
