Knife Defense Social Experiment

  • This video is part one of a social experiment we are conducting. The purpose of this experiment is to test people's ability to defend themselves against a knife. Subscribe to my channel : / @nickdrossos .
We want to see how people react defensively to a knife attack. Along the way, we will be giving you some tips on how to enhance your survival against a knife attack. You will learn how to trap, strike, counter attack and escape from such a dangerous situation.
Yanni was the first person to volunteer in our social experiment. He wanted to see how he could use self defense to help him out in a knife attack. Taking into account the first scenario of this video, we see that Yanni's opponent has mounted him. How can you incapacitate someone if he has mounted you?
A simple way would be to trap the knife he's holding in his hand on the ground, and to perform a buck and roll. By doing so, your opponent loses his balance, and this gives you the chance to bring him down, and to take advantage of the situation. Afterwards, you can continue by attacking him yourself.
One possibility, as we see in the video, is by head butting your opponent or even palm striking his face. You can go as far as eye-gouging him. Do whatever it takes to survive. You could even add more pressure on your attack by putting more of your body weight on him, for example, by putting more pressure on the place where you've incapacitated him.
Yanni asked an excellent question afterwards: What if my opponent and I are standing up? What do you do in this case scenario? You think strategically.
If he starts advancing towards you, your arms should come up to protect your centerline. You must maintain a passive and natural stance when holding your arms up, so you won't agitate your opponent even more. The element of surprise can truly come to be an advantage for you when defending yourself in this scenario. When he tries to strike at you with a knife, you can use your legs to strike him low while covering your upper body with your arms. Follow up with high strikes (such as palm strikes) and focus on trapping the knife at the same time.
If he continues trying to stab you, you have to be smart about what your next move will be. In the end, it's all a matter of how fast you can go, since speed is really important, and how willing you are to survive when you're being attacked.
Remember that finishing the threat and escaping from this predicament should be the only thing of importance.

I really like these social experiment videos. I really think that more people should learn to defend themselves. Its crazy when you think about all the people who don't know how vulnerable they really are. I am not a built guy but I still practice techniques and drills. Allot of people don't realize that even just watching a video and practicing the technique with a friend can help. Because if you retain that knowledge it is there in case you need it. Eitherway kudos on the videos and I just subscribed.

if you're laying down on the ground and somebody randomly mounts you with a knife and hes 220lbs pure muscle you need to rethink your decisions in life and how you got to that point

+adrenaline not really, if you get involved in a fight he couldve had the knife concealed, pushed you over then mounted you with the knife drawn.

OhioGentleman then you haven't figured out "all the scenarios" this kind of thing can happen anywhere, yes they have to be really bloody stupid to do it in public places but then they are carrying a knife around so they're probably mentally handicapped anyway. there are places in my town that i love going alone like the park simply due to scenery etc and it's almost always empty; things like this video are good to know even for the very slim chance of something happening.

I had thought about this for years (70/80s/90s) distraction is a good thing e.g. when u see the knife, look over his shoulder and say something like Bob/Robert/John/Officer/Dont shoot, worked to some degree with a kick in the nuts as the follow up.

Once you manage to mount him and block the arm with the knife you could also go for an americana after headbutting him. left arm blocking his wrist, right arm under his grabbing yours and just raise his elbow. if he doesn't tap you gonna brake his shoulder. Soft control can be used in this type of situations but it takes way more time to get good at it. Nice video btw :)

***** Stupid cameraman & passengers. Anyways, in the video it started as a fight not a knife fight. I'm not saying this doesn't happen what i'm saying is if someone wants to stab you or rob you with a knife or whatever, theyre not going to take you down first. Theyre going to draw out their knife and advance towards you. A knife fight in almost all cases is standing.

    • @seanknot

TBH this Mr Drossos fella gives a lot of really good advice.
Having some one land on top of me getting in a fight is the reason i started Jiu-Jitsu if you really want to feel safe get a blue belt at least :)

You talk about strikes to the head which are good but i think eye pokes would work better especially if the attacker is much larger or is someone who can take a few shots to the head. A hundred pound woman can eye poke successfully but a strike from her might not do much. Bruce Lee was a big fan of eye pokes.

    • @siriusgray3579
      @siriusgray3579 7 лет назад

true. If you are defending your life always attempt to strike soft with hard ^__^

Elbow to the temple can potentially knock a person out irrespective of the size ...
Besides poking the eye needs good finger strength, because the defender might injure the finger thereby disarming a major weapon ....

Good stuff!, but at the same time without practiced repetition and a basic expectation of "THIS COULD HAPPEN" most people are 100% unaware and 100% EXPECTING! That's why I say this is good stuff because it makes the viewer aware that these things happen. I don't openly discus what training I have had, but one thing that I think needs to be mentioned is RISK and REWARD!
The Risk is minimal (you might get cut and for sure your gonna get a scrape or something) BUT
The Reward ( you will live to see another day!)

I would suggest that maybe, as a default, you can talk to thim and order to drop the knife, if you have some skill. Just some psychological effect on him. Or perhaps that could make him even deadlier xd

Oh wtf you live in Montreal? You might be the 3rd or second biggest Montreal RUclips. If you don't mind, we have a Facebook group called Montreal RUclipsrs where we plan Montreal RUclips gatherings, my friend hosts a show on bell called Montreal urban race. You should check it out :)

    Good video..
The only problem i see is that this kind of sweep wont work against a much heavier guy, well atleast not if youre not going to trap the leg, i dont know that much but i think this is a big weakness in your series, youre always showing that sweep but its not as effective as it could be with a leg trap...
    Keep that in mind.. :)
PS: No hate, just a little correction. .:)(Love ur other videos, just not the biggest fan of this series)
    greetings
