  • An amazing 26 miles one way ride in this video (the first part) on the Black Mesa & Lake Powell Railroad, which ceased to operate in August 2019. It was a private electrified railroad that has operated in the north of Arizona. Transporting coal from 78 miles (126km) from Peabody Energy's Kayenta coal mine, to PAGE AZ. the electricity generating plant, The line was built in early 1970 and was the first railroad electrified at 50,000 volts. On this occasion I was alone, without knowing what I could find, wich added more intrigue to this route, but everything went well.

    Beautiful RR... Concrete Ties, Heavy Rail, and Deep Ballast. Plus, the mine was still viable from what I understand. Coal will make a come-back someday - I'm sure of it = unless they replaced the old power plant with nuclear. Then, the RR is screwed.

      Coal fired power plants are on the way out here in America. May be some other use could be found for the coal depending on the quality of the coal. Sad to see such a nice railroad go to waste. 😔

    Why are there so many abandoned railway lines in that part of the world?

    • @emmber19
      @emmber19 4 месяца назад +5

      There are a lot of abandoned mines out there, between the gold rush and the uranium rush there's been a lot of mineral exploration. Most of these railroads were built to carry mining products.
      The dry climate also preserves them better than the eastern railroads, making it appear that there are more railroads in the West when actually there are just more surviving railroads. Eastern railroads tend to get buried by plants and soil fairly quickly when left unmaintained.
