  • In figure skating, a "forward outside eight" refers to a specific element or maneuver performed on the ice. The term is often associated with figure skating figures, which are precise patterns traced on the ice. The "eight" in this context refers to the shape of the figure, resembling the number eight.
A forward outside eight involves skating in a forward direction while tracing the shape of an eight on the ice with the skater's blade. The "outside" part refers to the fact that the pattern is skated on the outer edge of the blade. Skaters are judged on the accuracy and symmetry of the figure, as well as the control and precision of their edges.
It's important to note that figure skating has evolved over the years, and the emphasis on compulsory figures (such as the forward outside eight) has diminished in favor of more dynamic and expressive elements in modern competitive figure skating programs. However, figures remain a fundamental part of figure skating training and are included in U.S. Figure Skating's moves in the field testing and training programs.
Paul Wylie is an iconic American figure skater celebrated for his artistry and resilience in the sport. Discovering his love for figure skating at a young age, Wylie's talent became evident as he clinched victory at the 1981 World Junior Figure Skating Championships. His breakthrough moment came at the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville, France, where he captured the silver medal with a mesmerizing performance, defying the odds as an underdog.
He trained with many of the best minds in the sport, including Evy Scotvold, Mary Scotvold, Carlo Fassi, John Nicks, Christa Fassi, Christy Krall, Dianne Miller and Gus Lussi.

❤️Paul W.! He’s so nice, I still remember fondly how he kindly stopped & told me 2b careful when I was ⛸️age 7 & getting in Nancy K.’s way BAD as an oblivious lefty kid. She was all 🙄& he was so much better at getting the point across that I was in the way/danger of a Kerrigan collision.
