I learned from another expert seamstress that you can tape down the button to hold it in place while you are trying to sew it down then you can rip the tape off and completely eliminate the possibility of poking yourself with the needle!

That is absolutely genius!😂 Thank you so much for this! You are truly an inspiration! You sucked me in via one of your shorts. I’ve binge watched many of them since this morning. I saw the coat you made. It’s absolutely gorgeous! It’s what I’d pick out in a store and lament I couldn’t afford it!

The way I learned to tie off my thread is 1) wrap the loose ends of the thread two to three times around my index finger, 2) use my thumb to roll them along my finger until they come off the tip, and 3) pinch the thread on the needle side of the knot and slide the loop along until it gets tight. It reliably creates a good-size knot that won't pull through my fabric without trying to stack knots on top of each other, plus with a bit of practice you can tie it in less than ten seconds. Love the channel, btw!

@@UnsightlyOpinions How ypu thread your serger would be great. I could barely thread mine correctly when I was fully sighted. I know you said your sewing machine was self threading. Tricks for getting thread through the bobbin holes for winding. Seam ripping. How to determine if a fabric is heavy enough for using for a garment (to avoid see through shirts and leggings). Oh and what labels do you use in your label maker? Mine keep falling off. Is there a trick to getting them to stick?

      Love the questions!
Some I can answer fairly easily others are definitely video material.
When it comes to using a surgery, mine is very old and I need help threading it, I get it through all of the components except for the needle and then have someone thread the eye for me. In a pinch I have used a needle threader backwards through the eye of the needle and managed to get threads through that way, but it was very frustrating. I know that they make a new baby lock surgeries that error thread so you don’t need to do any of the threading process which is awesome but they are very expensive.
In terms of seam ripping, it’s all by field, so I usually have the fabric between my fingers and wedge the seam ripper between the layers of fabric and go straight through the threads that way. It’s hard to explain but it does work relatively well.
For Bray labels I use the standard label from American printing house for the blind. I’ve had a few come off over the years, but nothing serious that I wasn’t able to almost immediately replace. As for print labels I think I have a brother LabelMaker I found on Amazon. So nothing special there either. I’m not sure why yours might be coming off.

My wife is a crochet manic. She watched this video over my shoulder and thought that you struggled to get the thread through the needle threader. She wanted to know why you didn't use a lace crochet hook to reach through the threader and hook the 4th loop of thread on your finger and then slide the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd loops off and use the hook to pull your thread through.

I definitely was struggling a bit! To be honest I never considered using a crochet hook! Definitely something I’ll try out next time. Thanks for the suggestion. :)

The real Mary Ingalls (not the actress from the 1970s Little House On The Prairie television series) learned to sew before she went blind at 14 years old. She made her living as a seamstress, pianist, and babysitter despite being blind. Unlike the character in the 1970s television series, the real Mary Ingalls never married.
