Great background music!
A few comments:
1. How can Roller Ball be so low?
2. How can Star Trek be above Roller Ball?
3. Nothing associated with Woody Allen should be on anyone's "Best list" so someone doesn't make the mistake of thinking he is funny.
4. Clockwork Orange isn't a Sci Fi movie.
5. Was surprised Star Wars wasn't number one until I saw ...
6. Alien. Absolutely correct.
you deserve the thumbs up for alien no. 1
Thanks I thought I'd get clobbered by Star Wars fans but I think I got away with it. Unless I'm mistaken Star Wars does reach the top in the next decade.
Logan's Run and Soylent Green are best
Maybe they live outside the top 30, but here are some more good Sci-Fi movies from the 1970's: Moonraker (1979), The Black Hole (1979), Meteor (1979), The Boys from Brazil (1978), Capricorn One (1977), Futureworld (1976), and King Kong (1976).
The films you listed are all favorites of mine. Sorry they didn't make the top 30. I can't remember if I included The Omega Man in the top 30 but that was a huge favorite of mine back in the 70s. Thanks for posting!
@@Top10Charts3978 You did include Omega Man, so I will make that the next movie I watch! Thanks, again.
My favorite movies on the list star wars close encounters and Superman the movie
My top 6 would be:
6. TIME AFTER TIME 1979
5. THE ANDROMEDA STRAIN 1971
4. WESTWORLD 1973
3. STAR WARS 1977
2. SUPERMAN 1978
1. CLOSE ENCOUNTERS 1977
I would remove these from a sci-fi list and re-class them:
Alien / Stepford Wives / Demon Seed, as horror films
Sleeper, as a comedy
I would remove these from any list and class them as having no redeemable qualities and only fit for the trash can:
The Man Who Fell to Earth / Clockwork Orange
Alien is my all-time favorite movie. What a masterpiece!
I'm a huge Alien fan too. Thanks for posting.
If you like 'Alien'... you may wanna check-out It's pre-cursors! !. 'Planet of Vampires' & 2. 'It. Terror From Beyond Space'!
I like them but they only have 1 thing in common - monster on spaceship. Alien invented a lot more than these 2
@@irina1296 Alien a much later, much better, production; hard to compare fairly with "It" and "Vampires". I like Alien's prequel, done a few years ago: "Prometheus". Might be only "modern" sci fi I like!!! "Modern" Star Wars episodes are unwatchable for me; first was best and deserves its spot here as #2.
Dude that was pretty good!
Thanks!
Epic List! 70's Sci-Fi had a flavor all it's own! Got a couple of Honorable Mentions submitted for your approval;
1. 'No Blade of Grass' (One of the few NON WWIII Post-Apoc scenarios!)
2. 'Wizards' (Need at least ONE animated Flic! Especially one with an early example of Mark Hamill's voice acting!)
3. 'The Intruder Within' (Essentially 'Alien' set on an oil rig! Fun Fact; The character Robin was the mom in the 'War of the Worlds' TV series!)
I have Ralph Bakshi's Wizards on Blu-ray, but it's mostly fantasy isn't it? If I did include a SF animation it should be Fantastic Planet, a European film set on an alien planet. I haven't seen the other two you mention. Thanks for the comment.
The Intruder Within is not from the '70s. It was first aired* in 1981.
*Yeah, that's right; it's a made-for-TV film, not a theatrically released feature-length film.
And lastly, it's rating on IMDb is pretty bad.
Logan's Run is my favourite, and not just because it features a scantily clad Jenny Agutter 🥰
That sci-fi classic is always worth watching for Jenny. :)
@@Top10Charts3978 The fun thing about Logan's Run is that there's plenty of eye candy for everybody. It's pretty happy for a dystopian film. Not a bad way to live really, up to a point.
One scifi movie of the 70s that was really good, but didn't make it to the list for whatever reason, was Zardoz(1974).
I too was surprised Zardoz isn't on there. Looking at my files it scored 6 which meant it just missed the list. Zardoz is an acquired taste, critics hated it at the time but over the years it's attained a cult following. I have it on blu-ray. Thanks for posting.
@@Top10Charts3978 You're welcome.

Great sci fi movies hard to find after the 70's. Today what passes for sci-fi is mostly unwatchable IMO, a few bright spots lately might be "Prometheus", the Alien prequel, and some others I can't remember right now!! Oh yeah, one was "Passengers"; it had a great and horrifying concept: waking up on a sleeper star ship, travelling at half the speed of light, bound for a distant habitable planet, 60 light years from Earth, 90 years too early. Talk about your OMG moment!
Aliens, Blade Runner, Back to the Future, The Terminator, ET, Robocop, The Thing, Ghostbusters (though more of a fantasy comedy), The Fly (1986), Predator, The Abyss, Tron... all in the 1980s. Oh... and The Empire Strikes Back. Then in the 1990s, Men in Black and Fifth Element... Terminator 2. Twelve Monkeys... Total Recall ... and the Matrix.
Ron you have shit and average taste
@@bonibon6669 What's your "tasty" recommendation? "Attack of the Paramecium Brain"! ;D
@@Inaflap U got a few (mostly remakes of great classics and sequels (thing, fly, etc.), but ESB is best in '80's, but shot in the 70's and released in '80, so I still rest my case! Rest of ur list is "really just OK"!! ;D
Ron Schlorff my god even your pitiful insults are bad
Star Wars number one
Star Wars Star Wars! I love Sleeper #26....great Allen fun. #25 Death Race 2000 has some good moments. #24 Rollerball....Caan is the man. #23 Soylent Green....great twist. #21 Just re-watched Logan's Run the other day. #19 The Omega Man...classic. #18 A Boy And His Dog is a movie not enough people know about. #17 Dark Star heavily influenced Alien. #16...Star Trek: The Boring Movie. #13 The Man Who Fell To Earth is ok....but not a favorite. #12 Silent Running...great Dern performance. #11 Slaughterhouse 5 is based on my favorite book of all-time. #9 Time after Time...the best Jack the Ripper time travel movie ever. This is a great Top 5....and I most of them in theaters. Surprised Alien topped Star Wars. Overall I have seen 23 of these movies. Voted up....fun video.
Thanks Bruce. Yeah Alien just pipped Star Wars for the top spot. I'm a big fan of both films but I would have preferred Star Wars at the top. Lots of favorites here, I'm glad The Omega Man made the list, Colossus too. Are you a Vonnegut fan Bruce? I read that book decades ago. I need to see Solaris again, first time I saw it on video tape it bored me, at least Soderberghs version was 90mins, the original was twice as long! A Boy and his Dog is nearly forgotten I hope the high rating it has here gets people interested enough to see it. SF movies that failed to make the list include Moonraker, The Black Hole, ZPG, The Final Programme, Futureworld and Zardoz.
Indeed it is a great list! Think the only one I haven't seen is 'The Terminal Man'! (Which is odd... as I am a HUGE fan of George Segal!) Admittedly I would have put 'Star Wars' a little further down the list, as in my opinion it's more AA than SF. But that's purely subjective!
Not supprised at all, as Alien was litterally dripping in creative atmousphere and talent, visuals, acting, music and story concept. Where as Star Wars was just relying on dynamic scenes to hold it together, when you remember just how bad the acting was in SW, dam. It was like a cartoon on steroids at best.
@@majorbrighton yup, but all good stuff. The 70's: the final decade of great sci fi movies. Today's sci fi? Foggetaboutit!!! It's its own oxy moron, IMHO.
Wich movie is that on thumbnail
Logan's Run (1976)
First true sci-fi on the list was CE3K - what a film!!
One of my favorites too! Watched it a number of times at the cinema back in the 70s. Now we have the wonderful Blu-ray release with all the various versions.
OK... I'll Bite! How is 'Close Encounters' the 1st true Sci-Fi on this list??? Are you suggesting the film stand Head & Shoulders among the others, or do you not consider the other films valid Sci-Fi. Not splitting hairs, just curious.
@@thrashpondopons2776 I agree with both of you, many good sci fi on list, but some fantasy and other genres mixed in there. Close Encounters clearly Speilly's best work, great compelling story, good effects, nice score, and not showing the aliens too much. The "commander", or who ever it was, of the ship only got a minute or two at end of movie, and was wonderfully "enigmatic". Perfect!!
where is blade runner???
Alien !!
Logan's Run best
only if you are under 30!!
Mostly GOOD choices, but SUPERMAN? I thought it was SUPER CHEESY!
Thanks. Well that first Superman movie was well liked, it's still my favorite of the Superman movies. As for it's inclusion here - he's an alien from a distant planet. Even Spider-Man is sci-fi. Thor is a mixture of sci-fi and fantasy.
Oh SM is definitely scifi for sure. I was 11 when SM1 came out, but even then I thought it was very juvenile, I mean spinning the world backwards to 'reverse' time? TOO ridiculous for even MY 11 yo brain to swallow! LOL! I thought Star Trek TMP was far more adult!
I think the more recent Superman reboot with Russell Crowe, had a bit more gravitas.
Spider Man, scifi too of course. Was never a big fan.
Well it's a nostalgia thing too. Like Sean Connery or even Roger Moore still being many moviegoers favorite Bond. Henry Cavill looks great as Superman but the film itself was a little too humorless, I hated the scene where Clark Kent let his foster father die so as not to reveal his identity. Bad choice by the writers. But otherwise the film gave my home theater a good workout. Star Trek TMP is still my favorite of the Star Trek movie series.
I had been meaning to see that Superman film, but never got around to it.
Or the later 1 where he dropped out of the super hero business.
Looking at your previous comment I thought you had seen Man of Steel, sorry for the spoiler! It'll be interesting to see how he um 'returns' to the super hero business in the upcoming Justice League.
You forgot predator that also should have mention in the top ten, come on folks.Your slipipng.
Hi there, Predator was released in 1987 and should be included in my 1980s sci-fi video.
@@Top10Charts3978 how embarrassing for him; clearly says 70's, clearly says top 30, does not know predator, which I love too, is an 80's flik, and then he misspells "you're slipping!" Come on Ken! :D
Ron Schlorff 😂😂
Alien didn’t beat Star Wars
What a steaming pile! Superman higher than Soylent green or Logan's run? Where was 2001 a space odyssey? And star wars is space fantasy not sci fi.
Bowie's abysmal 'Man Who Fell to Earth' has no business getting 7._anything._ *Awful* film.
Sad how the ultimate 'anti Star Wars' film gets No.1. It's sad that treating space like a rollicking fun adventure is seen as "less realistic" than turning space into abject horror. They're both fantasy yes, but I know which one I prefer.
Terrible cheesy list, got to 10 and had to stop. These were ok in there time, yet not that brilliant. Films like "Rollerball" got a shit load of publicity back then and was kind of forced down your throat, yet remember it was considered really raw for its time. I remember laughing through it, guys in skin costumes on skates!
Yet the acting was terrible in these low budget films, I could never understand why there were so few actors who could act normal? Star trek was actually pretty well done and I guess a classic series and film for that time with decent effects that where not over used. Logans Run was fun I guess, yet felt like a comic strip, maybe that was the idea? Yet "Westworld"! ha ha are you kidding me?! The film with no dialog at all and the most stupid idea for a film. Clockwork Orange was pretty radical at the time, yet only because most young people were aware of the current uprising of Skin-heads at that time and the extream violence that film condoned, not too popular. I only liked the music. Encounters of the third kind was cool back then, although not watchable now. Agree with number 1 choice, now that was one cool experience and one of the very first films to really stay with you. That atmousphere was brilliant.
Oh well at least you liked the no.1 movie here, but you were a little harsh on the others. I suppose you'll find 1950s classics like Forbidden Planet pretty much unwatchable. I grew up with those films and still enjoy watching them. But I like modern sci-fi too. Thanks for posting.
@@Top10Charts3978 "modern sci fi" is an oxy moron emphasis on the second word!!!
hey hey who are you calling a moron? [wink] I can barely remember making this video, Alien no.1... I took a risk there, didn't get slaughtered by Star Wars fans... nice
@@Top10Charts3978 I admire the work it takes to make these kinds of "best of" vids and the "thick hide" you'd have to have going in with revealing "you're list". I'm too chicken and too much of a tech. "maroon" to do one; so thanks a bunch for posting this list of some of the great movies, many of which I have in my DVD, and yes, horror of horrors, VHS collection of early (aka best) sci fi movies!! As for "Alien", the secret to the success of that movie, and it was lauded for it by critics at the time, is: "they did not show the Alien too much in the movie"!! Plus great story/acting, of course,...... and no CGI!! ;D
@@ronschlorff7089 Well making these videos has been an eyeopener for me especially on older movies. My favorites rarely make the top 5 after everything is calculated, but I'm glad I took the gamble with Alien at no.1 on this video, it could easily have been Star Wars. The ratings aren't written in stone and everyone has an opinion, my scores are constantly updated just to keep things interesting. And oh yes Alien is a big favorite of mine, but then so is the original Star Wars. Thanks for posting!
