One of Stravinsky's most delightful scores, this symphonic poem/ballet started life as an opera, no less. I can't imagine now why it was criticized both as a concert work and as a ballet at its premieres; perhaps the "Rite of Spring" was too fresh in the mind. The inspiration - a tale by Hans Christian Andersen - is a worthy one, and the music contains many fine solos, all deftly executed in this performance, which, incidentally, introduces to me another impressive conductor.
00:39 La fête au palais de l'empereur de Chine 03:10 Marche chinoise 06:37 Les deux rossignols 10:27 Jeu du rossignol mécanique 13:36 Maladie et guérison de l'empereur de Chine 19: 49 Marche funèbre
As I once teased a musician friend; "Everybody knows Stravinsky's 'Firebird', but almost no one knows his 'Song of the Nightingale' which is a completely different style and just as good."

With all those pentatonic interludes I would have conducted with a chopstick. ^ _ ^ What a wonderful piece. I love the opera from which this derived.

THis piece suffers from an ambiguous statute in the set of masterworks that Stavinsky produced in the 1910"s. It is indeeed a pity
at 3:58 the concertmaster uses the bowing in the score, but the dotted 8th note sounds like a sixteenth note - - should be longer
Really? Wow!
I think the first two minutes should be performed FASTER, to add to the sense of panic and humorous frenzy. :)
Come from two set right here

Well-played but the orchestra sounds heavy, even in the light passages, it is mostly down-beat.
Die Virtuosität aller Spieler ist echt bemerkenswert, aber die ganze Aufführung klingt etwas leerlaufend.
a nice performance, but perhaps too nice. not terribly exciting. i blame this on the conductor.
Oh yeah? Well why don't you get off your fat and show us how it's done big shot?! Juraj
You're kidding, of course.
