I remember going to CES at Las Vegas in 1984 when I was 14 years old. Even saw a gold painted Commodore 64! I was lucky enough to be living in Vegas at the time so it was just a short ride to the event.
The CES of yesteryear held promise. This year it was cheap plastic toys and unconvincing "holograms" and junky "transformers" from the 80s.(5:38) just cheaper and uglier.
CES isn't a public event so it's not like you could attend just because you were in town at the same time. It's only for industry members or press. I used to work in the convention industry in Vegas, so I would work on booths for companies at all kinds of different tradeshows. CES is one of the more interesting shows to attend but it still can get boring by the end of the day as many of the booths are very similar. There are always the top gimmicks of the year, like one year it was HDTV then a few years later 3D TV's, then 4k, then VR, etc. I'm not sure what this year was exactly, though, but I'm sure there was some thing that most big names had the same of.

I grew up in Vegas, and I love seeing people be shocked about the slot machines in the airport and gas stations. It's all I've ever known, so going to another state for the first time when I was little was a big shock. I remember asking my dad where all the slots were!
Ya, we even have slot machines at grocery stores here lol. But people also think that Las Vegas is just the strip and everyone here lives on or around there but for most of us our lives are just like everyone else's except we can gamble at the gas station if we want.
My connecting flight was delayed, but the airline gave me passes. The manager of Cheers let me stay in the bar after closing. My flight was in the AM! Several other strangers joined me and we ate nacho chips, played the slots, and drank into the morning! Pretty nice airport!
I am from Europe, but on my trip to the US one of the stops was Las Vegas. For us it is one of the picturesque places in your country, referenced a thousand times in movies. In iconographic terms, it is the same as for you it would be to visit Rome or Paris. Obviously we visited other more emblematic cities, but this is the one discussed in the video. I must say we had a great time, although we didn't really spend more than $5 on the slots, just for a laugh. The greatest fun was in the Cirque du Soleil shows, which curiously have their headquarters in that city, eating at buffets with endless menus and shopping, with a break to visit the Grand Canyon. Without a doubt, if I were to repeat that tour of the US again, I would visit Las Vegas again.

I’m a huge fan of your channel. It wraps me a warm blanket of nerdy nostalgia. But respectfully, you should try and incorporate some posture exercises into your daily routine. Forward head carriage becomes extremely debilitating the older we get and it’s fixable with 10 minutes of easy exercises 3-4 times a week . Its especially important for those of use that spend lots of time on keyboards. I was able to fix my posture over the course of about 2 years and I almost never get headaches anymore and my back no longer hurts all the time. It changed my life. I know how unsolicited advice makes one feel but I hope you know it comes from a place of love. Take care sir.
Thank you, alot of RUclips channels just talk about specific booths and don't show the whole convention itself. There is alot more at CES than i thought there was. Gotta go one day. 😎
Went to Vegas a year ago. One thing I definitely recommend there is the pinball Hall of Fame. They’ve got some really good pinball machines to play there, and it’s far more worth, than slot machines for sure.
Was there for CES myself this year as a vendor (first time in Vegas) and as someone who ALSO doesn't like gambling or excess, the Pinball Hall of Fame was the perfect way to spend time. 20 bucks got me 2 hours of playing all sorts of tables, right up until closing time!
Definitely the Pinball Museum and also Neon Museum, and the other great thing about Las Vegas, eating like a King. The Wicked Spoon in the Cosmopolitan is awesome.
There's also a really good retro arcade which I'm surprised he didn't go to. Maybe it was "too expensive". They had a sit-down Star Trek cabinet which was freaking awesome with the stereo sound and Mr. Spock's deep bass voice.
Welcome to Vegas! Been living here for 16 years and attending CES for the past 12! This year was amazing and technically the first year back from stupid covid.
@@danyf3116 Aww man I missed that. I did see in the TCL booth several demos of glassless 3D, and one was a laptop that was stunning to look at. I wonder if it was was based on the same tech as the ASUS. Used TCL's CSOT 3D light field display. They also had a 65" 8K display with wide view optical field. As it's name implies it had a much wider sweet spot that still presented 3D to your eyes. The laptop, you had to be on top of it, but man did it look good, good contrast, good brightness too. It had a butterfly that would come out of the screen at the end of the demo.
I am a touring musician and I play in Vegas 2 or 3 times a year to play music gigs.. and I also don't gamble, drink, smoke or go to see shows.. I agree, for me as well, it's kind of boring and just another place to work these days. I enjoy your content and keep up the good work Sir!!
A big warning to anyone thinking "wow, they still make cassette players" and thinking of picking one up... There is not a single good portable cassette player being made by any brand anywhere in the world. The closest you can get are 500 dollar stand alone tape decks with run of the mill quality and no dolby.
The fact that Ecoflow was willing to foot your entire bill probably means your review of their product did *absolute numbers* for their sales. Granted, they'd have to make a product worth your assessment, but it speaks volumes about them and yourself! Heck, your video has been instrumental for family and myself in considering supplementing our properties with solar in the future, especially since having it just handle some HVAC duty would be well worth the cost in Western PA recently.
Well I was EXCITED to see everything you showed from CES!!! THANK YOU! Of all the tech channels I'm subbed to, YOU are really the ONLY ONE what showed off the floor.... ALL the other ones were showing off the booths in the Belagio suites.... it wasn't about the main floor... And PERSONALLY I would have had a much better time on the floor (if I had mushrooms LOL) :P
Dang dude wish i coulda met ya there! Was at CES as a guest thanks to Ohms Quest , and was my first time going to a tech event of that scale! Been watching your videos for a while. Glad you had a good time. Shoutout from Houston!
I didn't get to say, "Welcome to Vegas!" You probably would have enjoyed the "Pinball Hall of Fame," which is kinda-sorta across the street from Mandalay Bay. Hundreds of Pinball machines, some of them from as far back as the 1960s, and pretty much all playable. It's hard to get an hour or two of entertainment for $10 in Las Vegas!
Went to the 1985 Chicago CES as a 12 year old. My dad struggled to get me in as there was a no-kids policy. I was probably one of the first kids to see the NES in the US. I remember a huge screen playing Duck Hunt.
Seeing this video from Japan, and I find it strange how nobody was wearing a mask inside the plane (1:20), while here everyone wears a mask literally everywhere, even in the middle of the mountain while doing trekking... Hope you and your family are fully recovered.
Your comments about slot machines being for people that are bad at Math(s) made me laugh out loud! 😂 I was literally describing them the same way after a recent trip to a casino in Johannesburg.
The point of honest gambling is to deal with differing priorities. To some people, a 1% chance of getting a life altering amount is worth more than a guaranteed reception of a 50th of that amount. Thus odds that average out to 1.5% will be a win for the gambler and the house.
I know understand why i follow you since the ibookguy, totally not in to gambling or las vegas... keep on doing your things. You are a total idol to me. greetings dude.
Not gonna lie, my family and fiance's family wants my bachelor party in Vegas and I'm not all too hyped for it. Just let me do a LAN party with my closest friends
Do what you want and let them scream about it. It's your night so have your fun. Why the Bachelor Party can't be respected as much as "the Bride's Big Day" I'll never know. Honestly, tell everyone you got COVID.
Sorry you got sick, and happy to see you are feeling better. I just flew from SoCal to DC, and wore a mask the whole time. I used to get sick every time I flew, but not this time. I'll probably never fly again without a mask. Thanks for the video!
As Techmon has reported there is only ONE brand of raw cassette player guts, and it is a POS with DC erase heads and poor flutter and wow. You'd be better off to buy a used old time machine, IF you can find new drive belts for it 'cause the original ones will have turned to mush by now.
Those electronic gambling machines are the worst! Indeed for people who are bad at math lol. I've been to Vegas several times, and I still can hardly believe that anyone actually plays them.
7:18 I am so nostalgic for those musical beeps the old slot machines used to play, I miss that sound so much, i'm glad theres still at least a few of those old school machines around
Glad you've recovered from covid...working a convention can really suck(set up and tear down) but when talking to relatively informed prospective customers it can be fun as you pick up ideas for posible improvements. I really can't wait to see your 'Commander X16' end boxed product.... spiral-bound manuals! :)

I feel like Adrian gives us more content for sure, his hour long diagnostic adventures are always so much fun. But David is always working on some large scale project that feels extra special when we finally do get to see it.
Happy to have you back David!
So much to love about this video. And a GeekPub Arcade - Awesome!
Good summary of CES, David. Can't wait to see your upcoming videos!
Good to see you back, looking forward to what's next! ^_^
This is a great show that I was excited to see what’s coming!
Thank you, alot of RUclips channels just talk about specific booths and don't show the whole convention itself. There is alot more at CES than i thought there was. Gotta go one day. 😎
Great video, loved your perspective.
I'm surprised you did not go to the Pinball Hall of Fame. 200 classic pinball machines
Did you see the ASUS 3D laptop? If so, do you think glass less 3D TV's might make a comeback?
@@danyf3116 Aww man I missed that. I did see in the TCL booth several demos of glassless 3D, and one was a laptop that was stunning to look at. I wonder if it was was based on the same tech as the ASUS. Used TCL's CSOT 3D light field display. They also had a 65" 8K display with wide view optical field. As it's name implies it had a much wider sweet spot that still presented 3D to your eyes. The laptop, you had to be on top of it, but man did it look good, good contrast, good brightness too. It had a butterfly that would come out of the screen at the end of the demo.
Looking forward to your upcoming videos. Have a great year.
That was a very entertaining video.
Thank you! :)
That place is huge! Thanks for sharing
The Golden Nugget up on Fremont Street has tons of mechanical slots.
Thanks for sharing the quick tour of Las Vegas and CES, I enjoyed it.
Never disappointing content, will probably watch a few more times over the years
A big warning to anyone thinking "wow, they still make cassette players" and thinking of picking one up... There is not a single good portable cassette player being made by any brand anywhere in the world. The closest you can get are 500 dollar stand alone tape decks with run of the mill quality and no dolby.
Thanks for the video, looking forward for that review
These videos are always great!
Hey David, it was a blast running into you and shaking your hand at CES. I hope to see you there (anywhere) again. A big fan and subscriber.
Enjoyed this, glad you got to have a paid fun vacation. :D
Thanks for the video. It's nice to see places that are hard to get to.
Glad you recovered from covid. Great video as always.
it’s always a good day when the 8 bit guy releases a new video
You’re looking fit and trim, David. All that convention floor walking seems to have paid off at least. 😊
Unlike that guy on the plane in the grey shirt. I thought he had eaten all the crew or something.
Glad your feeling better David good to see you that Vegas Exhibit looks like fun.
Thanks for the video - enjoyed the general views of Las Vegas too :-)
The fact that Ecoflow was willing to foot your entire bill probably means your review of their product did *absolute numbers* for their sales.
The entire bill is like 5k max. It’s not that big of an expense for them.
Looks like a fun trip! Wish I could have joined. Maybe later this year. 🤓🎹
It's really weird how your music gives this video an 80's flair 👍💯
@@ahmad-murery Thanks! Aim to please, pleased to aim. 😂🎹 Got more coming soon.
Cool video! Really enjoyed it. Also, you have excellent taste in synth music.

As a friend of mine used to say about slot machines in pubs.
'Every week, they take the money out - they don't put it in'.
All too true !!
the extended warranty joke took me off guard
Not a joke. There's a reason Europe doesn't have extended warranty: these are scams.
Dang dude wish i coulda met ya there! Was at CES as a guest thanks to Ohms Quest , and was my first time going to a tech event of that scale! Been watching your videos for a while. Glad you had a good time. Shoutout from Houston!
thanks for the update!
I didn't get to say, "Welcome to Vegas!"
You probably would have enjoyed the "Pinball Hall of Fame," which is kinda-sorta across the street from Mandalay Bay. Hundreds of Pinball machines, some of them from as far back as the 1960s, and pretty much all playable. It's hard to get an hour or two of entertainment for $10 in Las Vegas!
My whole family listed this as their highlight of our vegas trip last year... Highly recommended! Also most of the machines are .25 or less!
Oh no! You didn't go to the pinball museum? They have so many old arcade machines. Great people to talk with, especially if you are repairing them.
I agree, the people running the pinball museum are great to talk with.
Awesome man! I'm actually headed to Las Vegas next week to cover ShotShow!
Great program at the end ^^
Went to the 1985 Chicago CES as a 12 year old. My dad struggled to get me in as there was a no-kids policy. I was probably one of the first kids to see the NES in the US. I remember a huge screen playing Duck Hunt.
Seeing this video from Japan, and I find it strange how nobody was wearing a mask inside the plane (1:20), while here everyone wears a mask literally everywhere, even in the middle of the mountain while doing trekking...
Hope you and your family are fully recovered.
Yeah, here in the USA, they have backed off restriction on wearing a mask. It is usually only in medical offices/hospitals now.
We find it strange that you all are still wearing them. Your culture is very obedient.
Also, notice how there aren’t any Asian ‘truthers’. Nobody from those countries ever questions things.
I really can’t believe how obedient the Japanese people are. You don’t even question things like this at all?
今の日本が異常ってだけだw
Going from "I don't take sponsorships" to this is pretty comical.
Good to hear from you David!
I am surprised you were able to make a video inside the casinos' gambling areas. I always thought they didn't allow that.
Thank you for sharing.
David is the most wholesome man alive!
Looking forward to your EVO64 video!
Retrobits has the only video on it out here right now. I can’t wait to get my hands on one.
@the 8-bit guy Please make more videos, you are very likeable person and we miss your show :P
Tanashin, and it's Chinese.
This was a cool video. Enjoyed seeing the old coin machines
Thanks for the video 👍
4 times vaccinated 8-Bit Guy gets Covid 19. Lol!
Those electronic gambling machines are the worst! Indeed for people who are bad at math lol. I've been to Vegas several times, and I still can hardly believe that anyone actually plays them.
Thanks for your new video! Looking forward to the EVO64 and the Commander!
from half way across the world i am happy to see you show vegas to me. hope i could go there sometime
👆Your message are useful but follow the easy way of making income Tell Andrei jikh i referred you 👆✍️
Looked like a great trip!!!
Thats awesome you got to meet Kyle, he's local to me and such a nice guy!
Wow, it’s interesting you ran into Kyle and watch his channel. Great see my RUclips favourites converge 😊
You showed CES for real, and had a Maxwell Smart reference? Best CES vid ever. May go next year.
7:18 I am so nostalgic for those musical beeps the old slot machines used to play, I miss that sound so much, i'm glad theres still at least a few of those old school machines around
Thanks for posting a great video +++
An honest review of these type of trade shows. good video.
Thanks for this! I've done the Vegas convention thing and I feel everything you said.
glad to see you abck!
Glad you've recovered from covid...working a convention can really suck(set up and tear down) but when talking to relatively informed prospective customers it can be fun as you pick up ideas for posible improvements. I really can't wait to see your 'Commander X16' end boxed product.... spiral-bound manuals! :)
Looks like a great time! The MyArcade booth is where I would have spent all my time.
Honestly, I kinda feel the same way David does about throwing money away in a gambling establishment. I love the insight that what has been called "consumer electronics" has changed over the years. When I look a car whose skin changes colors, all I think about is what the collision on my insurance would cost.
