Author, musician, filmmaker, artist Kimberly Johnson witnessed firsthand the toll the pandemic took on our healthcare workers when her mother Georgia became ill during this time. It wasn’t COVID but rather metastasized breast cancer that was diagnosed on June 30, 2020. Sadly my sweet mom succumb to it only twenty days later. Throughout that time I spent every minute I could with her at the hospital. To keep my mind occupied I carried my sketchbook with me and sketched what I observed. Though I was angry at the whole medical establishment, I began to peel back my feelings of pain and frustration, and see what the health care workers were going through. The people in the paintings are fictional but based on real accounts and observations.
