Awesome vid! Thank you for pointing out these differences. I don’t really collect Marvel Legends figures, however, Venom has been my favourite Marvel character since Todd McFarlane introduced him in Amazing Spider Man issue #300 - MY absolute favourite issue of Spider Man ever released. I have but a small, rather humble collection of the retro cardback characters from the Marvel Universe, mostly from the Spider Man series with the exception of a few X-Men characters like the Goblin Queen, Dark Phoenix, and Wolverine. I have been trying to hunt down a cell-shaded version of Venom for a while now but have been reluctant to pull the trigger on any of them because of my fear of getting a bootleg version of him. However, now I know what to look for before buying. The differences on the cardback that were pointed out are especially appreciated since I’ll be looking for one that is new on card. Many thanks for sharing this insightful video.
Really handy video. I actually bought a Symbiote Suit Spider-Man on ebay that I knew I was taking a risk on, but from looking at how perfect the quality of the figure is, and all of the packaging tells here (since it's the same wave), I feel comfortable in saying the one I got is real.
Yo you are right I had the bootleg from Ali express and the head was faded on top and it was super loose I bought the original and immediately noticed a difference and your video helps spot the bootleg from original especially with the dots and letters and the printed number from the stamped numbers
when i was a kid in the 90's, torturing my parents to buy me all kinds of toys, i could never in my wildest dreams think one day bootlegs would be this good. i own a few bootlegs from different companies and i never thought i wasted money or anything like that
Re: serial number on the back of the retro card. Not necessarily, i have an official straight from hasbro pulse. The serial at the back starts over the third symbol. That being said, the number will be straight across and not angled. Besides that, everything is the video is the same as stated for the official. Well done video. Helps people not get ripped off.
I have both original and bootleg. Strangely my original version has missing paint in one eye, over-bright teeth and a lot more paint flaws than the bootleg on the spider symbol. The bootleg had a loose torso joint, which I fixed. It's insane how the bootleg I got for a low price is now a better figure than the original I spent a lot more money on. I have given white squares on hands to both and also made the symbol more cartoon accurate.
I really like the red and blue shadings but its a bit too over the top for me the more i look at it. It seems like it pairs well with the 2 pack symbiote spidey and carnage tho. Can u recommend a good venom figure that pairs well with retro legends symbiote spidey? I have my eyes on the 2 pack with winged venom and knull which looks super cool but he doesn't have that "retro" look
@@Stillfigurineout just checked them out, the one with the 3 pack looks good but i bet its gonna cost a lot haha! I will be sure to keep them in mind, thanks! The other 2 u mentioned looks good as well
i don't have this one, but i have some other hasbro bootlegs, like hulk and spider man and i can easily recommend them. they are very good, especially for a price of about 20$
do all originals start the serial number above the E on the back? I have one that checks off everything but the serial number, it starts above a different logo
thank you for this video, i did Not know this was a thing. i just bought a retro card Venom off from eBay and then found your video. i use your video to identify that i just bought a bootleg from Texes USA. i dont know what to think about this . . . i am concerned.
@@Stillfigurineout hey, thanks for responding. the Venom i bought i$35, free ship, $37 after tax. so, no, not horrible, but the pitcher for the add had all the things you pointed out. And, i tried to contact the seller to ask about it and haven't got any response, but i did go to look at the cancellation info, and the seller has it blocked so i can't cancel it. so thats where i am at with that. But, if the figure is like the bootleg you got, i know how to fix it up, and i would be fine with that. does your bootleg have a good feel to it? of an acceptable quality feel kind of thing?
@elrayoxephier1393 actually the plastic quality of the bootleg is decent (original is better of course), just mostly the loose joints that is most negative thing about it
I am about to buy one, which looks original, I have confronted it with every of this video, there is only one think that scares me, the number printed isn't "10861" but "10881"is it still original?
Even between original the serial number might be different, so if the things I shared about the figure matches the original, then it should be original
I'm actually tempted to buy the bootleg and use the feet from it to swap with the feet with the King in Black Two Pack Venom because I don't like how the feet look on that Two Pack Venom.
@@Stillfigurineout That looks pretty good but tbh I wanted to get the Retro bootleg but it would be an easier swap even if the Retro feet are less textured and would odd on the King in Black version 😂
Ironically enough I got this exact bootleg not that long ago was actually thinking of getting the Amazon exclusive venom body on the secondary market and just customizing it to match the animated series look the bootleg heads look damn near identical so in all honesty it’ll work for the custom project I have in mind
I recently bought this figure from eBay only to receive a bootleg with a lot of similarities to yours. I’m pretty disappointed but overall it could’ve been worse.
It looks like the one I got from Asian distribution (for 35 USD in 2023) is legit! If that's true, then it's funny how legit copies are so plentiful in Asia when they're so scarce in the US.
You know they are both Made in China. From what I see, they aren’t bootlegs. They are items that failed QA tests. So they are sold into the secondary market by the Chinese. Whereas, ones that passed QA are shipped to the West. Even if you say China is big, to have the machinery to constantly change new figures for “bootleg” is not cost effective or logical. The only logical explanation is failed QA.
Wow! The Bootleg looks like hot garbage! No idea why anyone would pick up bootleg anything. Not to mention to be contributing to the theft of intellectual property. Stop putting money in pockets of these thieves!
I don't like bootlegs too, but sometimes the prices of the originals are higher than the actual value and nobody wants to waste money on a piece of plastic. So, if the bootleg is a good quality one, you get almost the same figure but for less. Take a look to the last legends figures for example. Overpriced, very few accessories, lazy paint jobs, etc... Their prices keep going up for no reason and it's not worth it. Plus, thanks to exclusives, some figures sell out before you can even try to get them.
@@GearFighterCZeta Unless you are one of those people who can afford to buy 90€ figures like they're candies. In that case, no matter if the figure is worth 20 € but costs 40€, you can still get it without even thinking.
Hasbro ain't selling the original anymore, and when they did it was a limited release. Plenty reason why to buy a bootleg considering you can't buy this figure from hasbro anymore
Bootleg looks like hot garbage but it’s about 98% identical to the original…and you have no idea why anyone would pick up a bootleg?? Maybe getting a KO that’s almost identical for $20 vs original for $100-$150 sounds like a better deal. Man, you sound real dumb right now!
I have both the original and the bootleg (which I got for using as a cheap base for customization). Surprisingly the paint job on the eyes and paints of my bootleg is much more cleaner and flawless compared to the original which in my case has sloppy paint (chunks of white paint is missing from the right eye of my original, same goes for the spider symbol which has messed up paint). In fact the superior paint job on my bootleg is forcing me to use it as a default Venom head.

Thanks for the breakdown, not bad if he’s just on the shelf but I’d definitely want the original for peace of mind 😅 lol
Original definitely the way to go, but kinda hard to find now right
My original one is still in the package
For about $22, this seems absolutely fine. Considering the real was also $35, a couple pretty easy to fix joints being loose aint so bad
Great video man. Was waiting for you to review these. Saw a lot of ppl having broken figures from their KO
This one didn't break though.. thanks for watching!
