Our Cabbage Harvest was Pitiful but Family Camaraderie and Sweet Popsicles Brightened Our Day

  • We finally faced the dreaded chore of uncovering the cabbage to see if it actually made anything. Disappointed at what we found, but really enjoyed spending the day in the garden with our girls here in the mountains of Appalachia.

I like what Corey is saying about wasting food. I think when you work close to the earth with gardens and raising animals you become very aware of how much work is involved to get food to the table. You do not want to waste.

That’s exactly how I learned to save little bits of veggies. We had a soup freezer bag. Just add to it- corn, carrots, onion , peppers and potatoes.

Loved this video of your sweet family working and laughing together, sharing good memories with one another. It cracks me up that Corie and Katie loved their teachers when they were little but hated school. LOL. I can just imagine what little stinkers they were. It sounds like they got it honestly from their Daddy who took all his clothes off and ran around the room in Kindergarten resulting in him getting sent home. Lol And speaking of the disappointments of gardening, my cucumbers were growing like gang busters with blooms galore. Then I notice some the of the leaves started to turn yellow, curl up and some were even getting spots. Being new to gardening, I didn’t realize how devastating the moldy mildew can be to cucumbers. Fortunately, I have been able to have plenty to eat with our meals and I have put up several jars of pickles. I will know what to do next year and will get on it at the first sign. I hope your family enjoys the Labor Day weekend. Thanks for always making me smile.

You have some beautiful daughters and I truly enjoy their playing and singing. Our porch growing up was always in use. Our house had a large open hallway with a porch at each end. The hallway was called a dog trot, it separated the kitchen and living room from the bedrooms and helped the breeze come through in the summer. Momma cooked on a wood burning stove winter and summer, so the hallway kept the heat out of the bedrooms, but in winter the cold wind blew through that hallway and the bedrooms were always cold.
You should write a book, I would like it very much and I'm sure others would as well.

Corie, you should buy some of those divided freezer storage platers. Then you can put your veggies or mashed potatoes in separate sections and if you have any left over meat put it in a section then put in freezer. Then when your busy and need a quick meal it’s already there, just pull out of freezer, thaw it out in microwave or let it unthaw overnight in fridge. I do this when we only have enough leftovers to just feed one. Then when I knowIm going have a busy day and not home to cook for my hubby, I pull it out to unthaw so when he gets hungry that evening he just reheats in microwave and has a healthy hot meal instead of just fixin himself a sandwich. Tipper right too, just start a freezer bag to put all your left over veggies in and when it’s full make vegetable soup. You can even add any meat you have to add protein to it. I’ve did that before I discovered the divided freezer plates.
My first round of cabbages didn’t do well either. I had two that I left and put salt all around them to keep the slugs off and they actually turn out big. Almost 5 lbs each. Still I only got 2 good ones out of 12 that I planted. I still considered it a win bc I at least got 2 foot cabbages. Hopefully the next ones will be better!

Corey, I understand the desire to save food/leftovers that won't be eaten. I've gone from cooking for a huge family to cooking for my son and I, it's hard to not cook for an army. I take the leftovers and put them in either plastic containers or ziploc bags, kind of like a homemade TV dinner, and freeze them to use on days I don't feel like cooking. Dollar Tree has the most cost-effective containers in my area.

Hey to all you beautiful girls and thank you so much for sharing your life and stories and music with us. I live in north GA and every video just about reminds me of growing up with my Grannie. I love the wives tales and superstitions. I'm pretty new to this channel but I wanted to ask if you could do a video of the special gifts of healing that so many turned. My Grannie could cure Thrush she would pick a certain leaf from a white oak I think and say a Bible verse all she needed was father's name mother's name and the child's birth date. She would go off alone and she had family calling her from out of state. Everyone swore it worked. She was taught this by a old man I think a relative? But she had to pass it on to another male before she died and he will have to pass it on to a women. She also had an aunt who could stop bleeding and another aunt that could stop the pain from a burn. Anyway I thought if you haven't done a video already about this I think it would be great. And if you already have done one then forgive me and send me the link if possible. Thank you again for being the past alive and celebrating the amazing culture of the Appalachian people. God bless you and your beautiful family. Also I want to learn the fiddle so of your daughters give lessons let me know!!!! The music is amazing too.

You should get a kickback from those popsicles. I haven’t bought popsicles since I was a kid. Now I buy a box every week!! And I know I can’t be the only one!! 😂

I love this video, with the four of you. There is always good-hearted banter when this group is together. I promise you it's real it's not just done for the video, they really do act and talk exactly like this. You guys are a really wonderful family!

I see a good ole fashioned bean breakin in the future. When I was growing up in Tennessee we had cornshuckins, pea hullin, pea hull jelly. Picking, peeling, cutting apples from the orchard around our chicken coop and then drying them in the sun on screens we made our own souse meat between Thanksgiving and Christmas. All kinds of things most folks today wouldn't begin to understand or undertake. Neighbor ladies from out the road would visit one another and just sit down and start helping like it was their own garden being worked up. Sure do miss my grandma 👵😔

When something goes wrong like y’all’s cabbage, I say “oh well the company was good.” That’s what this video reminded me of.

I sauteed fresh yellow squash and onions for dinner last night. Man, was that good! So, I did it again tonight. : ) Your family has enjoyed a great harvest this summer, overall. I'm so glad for you! Yummy eating all winter, I pray. I've seen many say they didn't fare so well for one reason or another (lack of rain, bugs and such). But we're all blessed we won't go hungry anytime soon.

Glad to see mom and dad wearing hats to keep the sun off your face. The girls need to start to. I don’t mean to preach but i am currently having radiation on my nose from skin cancer. I wish i could tell my younger self to stay out of the sun. Just an fyi. Love y’all 💜
