- I find hook when you roll it on the scraper better lasting, and generally better cutting.... But for years I've used screwdrivers but in most cases they are only harden at the tip, however using old gouges and other woodturning tools we all have lying around is far better option...so you'll see how I convert this old hybrid gouge into new purpose...
Stay tuned
Enjoy

Another great video I your work is so inspiring I find myself watching 1 or 2 of your videos everyday 🎉
Awsome, I really appriciate time you took to watch my videos... Thank you
Wow! that's an amazing difference using the burnisher, great video .
Thank you Sir😀
Scraper is a misnomer. The tool is actually a high angle plane. Grasping that principal makes for greater understanding of its use. Your sharpening technique for scrapers is a great lesson.
Thank you very much
Awesome! Very simple to follow and very helpful info.
Thankyou very much for your videos, I have done many wood carvings of animals and other figurs but am in the process of buying a better lathe as my eyesite is not what it used to be. I live in the middle of Canada, and work out of my basement in the winter and in the car garage in the summer. Thanks again for the instruction and teaching.
Thank you very much
Thanks for that Tomislav, it is a similar process what we do on card scraper!
Indeed, pretty much the same ☺️
@@tomislavtomasicwoodturning In Scotland we call them cabinet scrapers as opposed to card scrapers. Yep, works a treat with a little hook. Best regards.
This is the best demo on why and how to burnish a scraper . Thank you Tomislav
Thank you sir 😀
Cool. I learned some new things. Thanks for sharing this information!
Glad to hear it, thank you
Really useful video. Many thanks.
I made a burnisher using a short length of 4mm carbide and am pleased with the results.
Excellent presentation and tips to improve our turning technique and reduce sanding.
Glad to hear that ☺️
Very nice, another great information video.
Glad to help out ☺️
Tomislav, thank you for this detailed instruction. I'm a relatively new turner and have been struggling with some spalted ash that is very punky. Using the hook and roll method on my scraper allowed me to create an almost perfect, smooth and glossy surface on even the punkiest part of the blank. This will be my go-to technique, and will save lots of time and frustration. Keep up the high level of instruction, it's appreciated!
Really glad to hear that and that you find my videos helpfull.... Appriciate that ☺️
Enjoy your new tehnique 🤗
Thank you. This is a great series on the use of tools. I’ve been turning for a few years, and have already learned from this series.
So glad to hear that ☺️
Thank you
What a great idea to use a worn tool like that love your work

Thank You Steve
Great lesson on scraper burr creation.
Thank you 😀
Great information. Learned something new today. Thank you.
Awsome,glad to hear that
Thanks. That was valuable and I look forward to seeing more
Thank you very much for watching
That's a pretty piece of maple, sir. I like where you're going with the video too.😊
I can see it! Smoothe as a marble table.
Glad to hear that sir 😉
thank you it's a great video in fact its certainly the most enjoyable one to understand
Really glad to hear that ☺️
Excellent tips. Well done.
THANK YOU
In the same way I gave a second life to a used solid carbide end mill - it also made an excellent burnisher.
Thank you for your tips! Waiting for your in-depth video on scraper techniques.
Thank you very much 🤗
I’ve been doing this on card scrapers for years. Makes good sense that it works here too.
Indeed, and it works great
🕶thanks Tomislav. Helpful video
Thank You Steven
Great video as usual Tomislav. I have been a wood worker for almost 60 years now and the absolute best burnisher that I have found is one made of the rod from a vehicle engine. I am still using one I made about 20 years ago.
Thank you sir, thats interesting, never thought about that 😀
Great idea! I’ll be trying that one soon! Thanks.
Go for it,let me know how you like it
Love watching the shavings fly! The zoomed out shot was really helpful to see how you move your body as you are moving the tool while keeping your arms mostly locked into your sides. I need to work on that!
Thank you, glad you liked that and glad to help out
Hello Tomislav,
First of all, congratulations on your dream lathe.
As I only started turning this year, I don't yet have any "old tools" to recreate this piece.
I'm really looking forward to the new video series. I'm particularly looking forward to the video about the chisels. I took your words in the video about the decorative icicles to heart and prepared 12 beech blanks. Then I actually managed to make 11 pretty similar icicles with the chisel. One of them flew away. However, I often had a catch with the roundings that I can't explain. It would be great if you could go into this in more detail in the video about the chisels. I'm starting to like this tool a bit. 😉
Thanks again.
Greetings Andreas
That is Awsome Andreas, when ever you have opportunity to do repetetive work go for it....its so much value in small production runs...
Thank you very much for support
This will help I'm sure. Good video.
Thank you
It's a joy to watch you do these videos. Those shavings were very impressive. I've always been a fan of scrapers and used them extensively for flatwork; they just leave such a great surface and I found that I could eliminate the need for sanding with good scraping. Really looking forward to the series you are putting together. That is one of the areas I need to expand in my turning tool set -- adding some additional scrapers for dedicated purposes.
Thank you very much 🤗, indeed they are such a valueble tools
Huge difference!
Indeed🤗
So smooth and perfect finish, I need a proper scraper and begin to practice the correct way to deal with this technique. Soon, hopefully (same as Skew, soon, soon). Cheers, thank you again!
Thank you Boris,☺️
Thanks for another great teaching video Tomislav!
Glad you liked it, thank you
Great idea.
Tomislav, thank you so much for sharing your expertise on tools. Love the reuse of old tools and I'm going to try burnishing next time I'm in the shop turning. Thank you!
Thank You for watching and comment 😀
You’re such a talented artist. I have so much respect for you and I have so much to learn from you. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us.
Thank you sir for kind words and support what I do ☺️
Ha! I knew this is what you were teasing us about a while ago! Love it! I have a card scraper burnisher that I’ve been using for years. Wasn’t sure if I was being weird for transferring this technique to the lathe, but a burr is a burr and I’ve had great success with it. Great video Tomislav and can’t wait for more! Thanks!
Well I'm weird too then☺️ thank you very much for watching
Thank you for sharing another great tip. I like your ideas on repurposing tools. Thank you for your videos.
Glad you liked it and thank you for watching
Excellent video. I never quite got how this was supposed to be done until now so thank you.
Glad to hear that 🤗
Great instructional video. Outstanding camera work. Thanks!!!
Thank you for feedback and watching 😀
hi Tomislav, thanks for the video, awesome what you do to improve the scraper, I'm looking forward to try it.
Thank you, try it and let me know how it goes
thanks Tomislav, very helpful to us beginners
Glad to hear that ☺️
I do enjoy your tool videos. I like repurposing old tools too. I made a card scraper after your other video.
I recently demonstrated to my club and used a tilted scraper as you and Richard do, they were a bit surprised 😅. But it's a 'go to' cut that I use regularly now. Debs
Thank you Deb☺️, it always gets those looks but once they see how well it works then they convert 😅
Great demo of getting a good scraper burr. I've been thinking about getting the Veritas Scraper Burnisher from Lee Valley. It has two carbide rods on a base and looks like another nice way to get a burr. I know the advantage of getting a great finish, by using a cabinet scraper, from my woodworking days. The key is that the tool used to manipulate the burr be harder than the steel you're trying to burnish.
They also sell the carbide rods separately so I've considered just buying the rods and making my own base. The rods have tapered ends at either 5 or 10 degrees depending on how aggressive of a burr you want. I'd be curious if anyone else has used this system and how successful they have been with it. Love your tricks of the trade series. Thanks for sharing your tips!
I don't have carbide rods but great idea and I might try find few to try it.... Thank you very much for watching
@@tomislavtomasicwoodturning I'm surprised you don't have the Crown 268A CRYO Cryogenic Multi-Tip Shear Scraper. I love that tool and even bought an extra blade so I have another sharp blade on hand. I don't think I could shear scrape the inside of a bowl without it. You might have to check one out.
Beautiful bowl. Nice work as always 👍👍
Thank you
Very helpful T, look forward to your scraper videos. Thanks and stay safe
Thank you very much
Amazing, just like a cabinet scraper on the lathe 😊
Excactly sir☺️
Great Video! i have a large scraper , and will make it this shape. thank you .👍🏻
Glad to hear that sir
Very nice.
Thank you
I do prefer a burnished burr for shear scraping. I don't use a scraper for the final cut ever. I did see one turner who was turning some hard/sugar maple, and he totally honed off the burr and got an almost glass smooth finish cut. I am guessing that it is the wood, at least as much as the tool. For burnishing a burr on M42 high speed steel or the PM V10 metals, I use a carbide rod. I did find a source for them here, or old router bits work just fine, and they are generally highly polished. I do put them in a handle. The burr can be burnished down and raised back up a couple of times before it is time to go back to the grinder.
Hello hi, I've done this with file as well, I somehow find screwdrivers a little better and hss tool like this spindle even better.... But it all depends on tool types and for card scrapers I've used pretty much anything on hand☺️
Hi Tomislav, that was very interesting.... I have some round bar tool steel in my shop that I'm going to make into a burnisher. This could help me with my scraper learning if the tool is super sharp like yours.
Thanks, Ralph.😊
Thank you Ralph, try it, with scrapers it has a lot to do with burrs so good one and proper tool presentation should give great finish
Gran video 👍👍ya lo entiendo
Glad to hear that ☺️
A lot of older wood workers use a drill rod for a card scraper. They are hard tool steel, fairly easy to find and usually a nice low price. I think it would probably work just fine for a turning scraper.
Yes I know, works ok as well.... Pretty much anything harder then screwdrivers is better but again I've used screwdrivers for year as well🤗
Здравствуйте !,из штанги реер можно сделать ?
Thank you for this
Thanks for watching
In the beginning, I thought you'd put a handle on the fluted end. Wouldn't that reduce bandage consumption?😁
Indeed it would, luckly I cut my self on scraper point not the burnisher/gouge😂
Hi Tomislav, have you ever used a Sorby Pro-edge for sharpening? I have a Pro-Edge and it does not seem to produce a burr on scrapers, or am I doing something wrong????
Hi, unfourtually I haven't used sorby pro edge, not sure what can be the couse of that, have you tried honing?
How hard should you press against the edge with the burnisher?
Not hard at all, you don't need a lot of pressure
Томислав! На твоём новом станке такая большая инерция остановки!? Или это старая машинка?
Its new one, it has a lot of heft in the spindle
Did you make a collar stop for the tool rest?
Yes, roughly... I'll make one more precise☺️
Hey Tomislav, how often do you use that technique before going to the grinder again? I feel like I can only use it once because after that the very top portion of the scraper (where you push against to roll the burr up) is "flat" and I can't roll it up again 😅
Hi, you can much like with cabinet scraper roll it 2-3 times but it get weeker with every roll and little more difficult to roll as well
@@tomislavtomasicwoodturning Thanks for your answer 🤗
