Thank you very much for all this info, the whole series has been wonderful. But this is the part that I really need the help with, and the way you have shown each step is super..
Watching replay, duh. This info would have been good to know 2days ago.😊 You have given me the confidence to do a lap size I was going to send to the machine quilter. Thanks for the great tutorial.
Thanks for showing all those great tips and tricks to machine quilt. I probably will never have the kind of money it takes to have a long armer do the quilting, so this gives me a way to quilt it and keep it fairly straight.
Thank you Gina for a simple, yet great looking way to quilt a quilt. I love the tip of using the blue tape! I’m very excited to get my quilt quilted, by me.
This is a great video because we get to see your habits as you machine quilt like checking for any puckering underneath as you go. This video and the previous one on basting serve as a refresher for what’s to be done to avoid disasters.
I'm late watching but want to thank both Gina Tell and FQS for another great video. I have the clips added to my cart for my next checkout. When quilting diagonal lines I mark using a ruler and something like a hera marker. That seems to work for me but will keep in mind using painter's or masking tape. I would be afraid though that I would go off course and sew on the tape. That could be a problem!
I am glad you have something that works for you, I have gone over the tape lots of times, it comes off very easily since it is not very sticky tape. Thanks for the comment, and thank you for watching!
The EverSewn QE has an automatic thread tension built in to each stitch pattern and includes a manual adjustment. In the two years I've been using my QE, I've never had to adjust the tension b/c it does an amazing job setting it automatically.
Thank you! The tape it is!! I am going to try it on the quilt I’m working on. I have had a hard time using the ‘pencils’. Time to raid hubby’s work shop!!! LOl....
Hello nywvblue! A lot of quilters like to quilt in 1 direction to avoid distortion, but try it out and see what works best for you. Here you can see Christopher Thompson quilting in 1 direction as well on a small project ruclips.net/video/pGiIwd2klEk/видео.html
Thanks for the tape tip because I have not found a single marker that I can use easily or that serves my purpose well. Now I do----painters tape! Yippee!
Hi! This is a great video, thank you! I have a question. I am doing a strip quilt, so my quilt top has strips sewn horizontally with borders around it. I don't have a fancy ruler that you have. How can I make a straight diagonal line without those squares in your pattern as a reference. Thank you!
You can use anything, in my beginning sewing days I would used a tape measure on the floor, once you get your first line of tape on, you can just measure out from there. I have even cut cardboard the exact size I want and used that.
If you used painters tape, or masking tape it should pop right off, I would use the point of a seam ripper to pull them up, and then maybe a tweezers also, depending how small the pieces are. Good luck!
My quilting gloves are exactly what you are wearing but they are stained with dark stains from many many quilts. How do I get the stains out or assure that the dark coloring does not rub off on light colors as I continue to use them.
Loraine Leuschke They do get dirty pretty easily, the ones I have at home are pretty grungy looking too. I do wash mine from time to time. I’ve put them in the washing machine, and I’ve also hand washed in the sink with a little Dawn soap.
Thank you Gina! This is great! I was wondering about pulling up the bobbin thread before beginning to have both threads on top? I was told to do this but notice you didn't worry about that. Do I need to do this?
I normally pull up my bobbin thread, but the reason she may not have is because she starts 'off' the quilt top, in the batting...which all gets cut off anyways...any nests that happen will be cut off...
Yep, the other comment here nailed it, since I’m starting outside the edge of the quilt it doesn’t matter, I only do this if my thread breaks right in the middle of the quilt. Thanks for watching!😍🧵✂️
I wouldn't say I am really "pushing" because I am using a walking foot, it really helps feed the quilt through at a consistent pace, so you keep nice stitches. However if you choose to do a large quilt, it will be a little heavier, and there may be a little push and pull required.
This is an excellent video to show some of the tricks and tips for quilting a small quilt using a domestic sewing machine. Gina, you're an excellent instructor! I would love to know what those white round clips are that allowed you to roll your quilt, and where you got them. Thanks! ~Diana from Toronto

I don’t like to see the starts and stops with straight line quilting in the middle of the quilt, plus they could pull out after washing, it’s best to have fewer starts and stops for that reason so I go from one edge to the other, but you do whatever you feel comfortable with 🙂

@@GinaTellThreadGraffiti Thank you! I found the pdf when I watched the next video 😂 You did a wonderful job explaining the quilting! Thank you so much.
I also like watching Gina. I do walking foot and free motion but I always learn something new. I love the tape idea I would've never thought of it. I always used fabric pens. Thank you 😊
Hi Gina, I was wondering where I might be able to buy those rings that hold the bulk of the quilt in a roll shape in the throat of the sewing machine? Thanks.
diane motley it might feel easier to get it all done with 4 inch lines and then add in more because it’s already basted, and you can also see it and judge based on that, but either way will work. Thank you for watching! 😍🧵✂️
They go inside your bobbin to help keep tension regulated a little better, I had one in the machine the day of the video, and I use one every day at home on my Juki, and the larger size on my long arm. They are great!
I had to laugh because I just used painter's tape to quilt a satin pillow. I sampled the purple air erase and it didn't look like it was coming out so I went with the tape. It took a while but finally the ink disappeared. It's good to educate oneself on all the techniques out there so we can choose the best option for the work we're doing. You're welcome. I really appreciate all of you folks who take the time to make tutorials.
Hello Beryl! Thank you for letting us know the link is not working. We are still working out some issues with the website but we will get that link updated as soon as possible.
There are times I do not use the clips, I think it's just personal preference really. In the beginning I usually start with the clips because that is the time you have the most bulk, but as you reach the edges you don't have as much bulk to deal with. Also, if you are working with a mini quilt, or a small baby quilt it might be faster to not use the clips, if you are in a hurry. Hope that helps, thanks for watching! :)
Hi Kanday! FQS carries them. I use them and they really help. On larger quilts I roll both sides so there’s not a lot hanging down on the outside. www.fatquartershop.com/quilt-clips-set-of-4-cottage-mills
Renee Riley Thank you for the kind comment, means so much to me! I do not usually quilt standing up, it is easier for filming reasons because the view is better, but I would suggest sitting in a comfortable chair and feeling as relaxed as possible. 🧵✂️😍
Dear Fat Quarter Shop, Can someone please fix the playlist? This video on straight line quilting appears before the one on basting. I got very confused. Thanks!
would have been easier to understand if you mentioned up front that we are straight line quilting 4" apart all over and shown what the finished product looked like after completing this video. How much are you pushing it through and how much are you just letting the feed dogs feed it through?

Hi, great tutorial, but I was wondering why you start at the outside edge, and continue on? I was taught to start from the middle and work to edges.
I don’t like to see the starts and stops with straight line quilting in the middle of the quilt, plus they could pull out after washing, it’s best to have fewer starts and stops for that reason so I go from one edge to the other, but you do whatever you feel comfortable with 🙂
Do you need to back stitch at the start and end of each row.
Cara Moffat Since we are starting the stitch outside the edge of the quilt it’s not necessary because you’ll be trimming that off in the next step.
The binding secures the edges of the stitch
Hi Gina I'm a beginner quilter the tape idea is great but how you sandwich the quilt together
