The real problem is not what russia can do/claim or not, if it's legal or even it has a "good" counter measures theory behind it. The problem is how third countries are going to regard it, despite of what argument is used. What about China doing the same as retaliation for the US tariffs and providing weapons to Taiwan? what about Iraq keeping all US assets that are there after the US refuse to leave? Again and again, we in europe, and in the west at large, fail to put ourselves in other's shoes even for our own sake. Never do to others what you don't want done onto you comes to mind...

@@princeosars3298 different things, if you really think it makes sense, well, go for it and make an international court ruling make the decision. It's the job of courts not governments nor people to decide whose assets should be confiscated to compensate what. If you feel there is no entity responsible for it, then congratulations, you found an international legal vacuum, and we should fill it with equal rules to all.
Doesn't make sense Russia gets their assets confiscated for indiscriminately attacking Ukrainian cities while Israel makes collective punishment their business as usual policy with 0 consequences. And that's exactly the problem. The powers to be don't want to create a real system that would punish ALL, including their interests, that's why there is vacuum and that's why injustice is possible. It's just geopolitics 101.
The only reason we're doing this whole song and dance regarding it being a legal and political conundrum in the West, is cause we want to mitigate the fallout from seizing the assets.
The will to do it is there, the will to suffer the consequences less so. And Russia is trying to point out that we're willing to break one of our "sacred tenets", upon a lot of the trust in our banking systems is based. Are they being hypocritical? Yes. The major economies of India, China, Saudi, and UAE, which you mentioned, hardly make up a quarter of global GDP. Most of their trade is done with other countries. To trade with other countries, they will need dollars. BRICS have talked since its inception about creating a common currency but no alternatives have been approved. This is because any shared currency would be completely dominated by China. Pretty much like how the Euro is dominated by Germany, but to a much greater extent in China's case. Also, American superpower status is not just based on the dollar. The strong dollar allows America to borrow for cheap on international markets, but the US also has a ridiculously strong military, huge oil reserves, and one of the most diversified economies in the world. Unlike China and Russia, it also has a growing population. Also, you are acting as pressure from America over democracy and human rights is a bad thing.
