A Legacy of Service // Tribute to Janelle Alder

  • Janelle left behind a rich legacy. Many people were touched by her care, and many are left with a new inspiration for service. Her shoes are now empty, and her legacy of service calls each of us to a deeper walk with God and a new commitment to missions.
On March 1, my girlfriend Janelle Alder was serving as a nurse on a helicopter (The Yellow Bee) that never returned home. She along with Pilot Daniel Lui, a patient, and two family members went missing over the Sulu Sea. The only items recovered from the ocean were a pillow from the patient, and Janelle's shoes.
My brother Daniel Hosford came and filmed this short video, capturing the legacy of Janelle, and my mission to continue in service. I pray that you are blessed, and that our story encourages you to get involved, and "fill these shoes"
To learn more about how to support these missions, please subscribe to my newsletter by visiting my website at AirwaysofHope.com
Thank you for your prayers and support during these difficult times. 🙏🏼

My prayer goes to all those who lost their loved ones on this incident. We thank the Lord for the lives of Janelle and others who served others and serving God at the same time. Thank you for serving my co-filipinos and letting others hear about Jesus.

    Dear Brother Andrew,
You are truly an inspiration to many, and I am deeply saddened to have heard of your loss. However, it never ceases to amaze me how you remain strong during such difficult times. May God embrace you in His loving arms and bring you comfort.
Please remember that all things happen for our good, and although it may be hard to understand, God knows that this was for her good. I encourage you to draw closer to God and seek solace in prayer. Cry out to the Lord not with anger, but with pain, and let Him bring you the comfort and peace that you need.
Thank you for being a selfless and a devoted individual. Your service is truly appreciated, and someday in heaven, I hope to personally thank you for it. I believe that God has allowed you to go through this experience for a purpose, and I am praying for your future.
May God bless you and keep you.
He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away. - Revelation 21:4.
    Sincerely,
    A brother in Christ.

Beautifully done. I served in Micronesia. One of the teachers there the year I was died while traveling to a remote island to preach. Solomon Sumner. It's real. It's hard. Absolute respect and love for those who live and give. And those who lived, gave, and stay till the second coming. Nothing easy about it. But I too live with that hope that it is/ was worth it.

All they found was a pair of blue shoes floating in the waves.
I saw a picture of the shoes. Love fiercely, the picture seemed to say to me. Because this all ends one day.
I've been wearing blue shoes to the cities I've been traveling to all Spring.
And I wear these blue shoes in remembrance of Janelle Alder. And I tell those I speak to about her.
For those that don't know, Janelle Alder was a young woman who graduated Southern University in 2021 with a nursing degree.
With her whole life ahead of her and a bright promising future she joined a team of air medics working to help the poor and sick in a remote area of the Philippines.
There she used her nursing skills, flying on missions, to bring relief to the suffering and to help all those she came in contact with.
She took her calling serious, even going so far as to learn the language spoken in the Philippine Highlands so that she might better help the complete strangers she served thousands of miles away from home by speaking to them in their own tongue.
Weeks ago, the yellow bumblebee helicopter Janelle was flying on while medevac’ing a sick patient silently spun in over the ocean and suddenly stopped transmitting it’s GPS signal.
An extensive search has been made for the helicopter and its crew and its patients.
As they say in aviation, there were five souls on board.
All that was found during the extensive search were Janelle’s blue shoes, bobbing in the lonely waves many miles from any shore.
They had been perhaps hastily kicked off as those on board did what they could do in their last moments 40 or 50 miles out to sea.
Those blue shoes, bobbing out in the lonely waves could not be sunk. There is something poetic almost about them walking on water when all else was lost.
By every indication, Janelle Alder and the entire crew were lost at sea.
Yet, what was not, and can never be lost at sea, is the Spirit that walks on every water and calls all things its own. And that is the Spirit which carried Janelle there in the first place.
And that was a Spirit of Love, a Spirit of Service, a Spirit of Goodness; for such as these are the Spirit of God.
Her life was cut short, as were those of the others, yet through her kind deeds and selfless care for others Janelle will leave a legacy behind far more than just a pair of blue shoes.
Life is filled with tragedies. And it is filled with risk.
But love does not shrink back from either.
Love when blended with faith becomes courage. And a very special type of courage. A holy one. A supernatural one. A world-changing one.
For this sort of faith, is the highest form of courage.
Faith is a willingness to act; it is even the readiness to act for a cause even when there are no guarantees in advance of just how things might turn out.
This is courage. This is love.
And this Courageous Love says that no matter how things might turn out it is still worth the risk.
For a soul to live life in such a noble and lofty way makes all other things seem almost useless to me by comparison.
To place the power to trust God above any guarantees or certainties for one’s own well-being, and to press on so that others might live seems to me to be no foolish gamble, but rather the most noble path any soul can take.
The path of service. The path of love. The path of faith. The path of Christ.
It is the path of heroes.
Many are hurting over this tragedy, or from tragedies like this and to such as these I am speaking. Please hear me well.
Yesterday is not ours to recover, but tomorrow is ours to win or lose.
Let us wear blue shoes this spring to remember. To remind us of the sort of courageous love and faith that Janelle Alder had. To remember all the courageous ones just like her who go forth to help others in the name of love with no guarantees of safety.
Let us wear something blue to remind us of sort of things that are really worth living for. And really worth dying for if need be.
I challenge you to buy a pair of blue shoes and wear them this year to remember. And when people ask you about your blue shoes tell them the story. Tell them of how someone loved others more than herself and went forth to glory doing what she believed in.
And each day, when you put them on in the morning, or see them throughout the day, take a few moments to remember the sort of faithful courage that makes life worth living and remember the sort of Spirit that Janelle and the others had that made them willing to risk so much to save so many.
And as we go about our days wearing our blue shoes, let each of us, act for the best, hope for the best, live for the best and take what comes.
And if death ends all, we cannot meet death better.
To Janelle Alder and the rest of the crew who knew the risks, who knew the possibility of tragedy but courageously chose to press on to help others in the name of Love anyway; to such as these I tip my hat and say, well done thou good and faithful servants.
None have ever met death better.
I will wear my blue shoes this spring to remember your courage. To say well done. And to remind me of how much has been risked, and often lost, in the name of Love.
Well done Janelle. Well done Daniel. Well done to all who have laid down their lives in the service of Grace and Love. May the Good Lord raise up souls who have the courage to fill your shoes.
