    Are you currently studying industrial design or looking to get into it? I remember when I was a student myself and how I would think about the careers and opportunities after graduation.
    Is anyone going to hire me? What do I need to do to get noticed? Investing years into an education without knowing the outcome can be stressful.
    In this videos on how to get a job as an industrial designer I'm going to share a couple of tips that helped me out when I was applying like crazy to companies almost 10 years ago now. You're also going to see a couple of horrible sketches, but that's not the point!
    I hope this video will help you out. Let me know what your plans are for the year by commenting below. What is your goal? Where do you want to be by the end of this year?

    Some goals for me this year are to improve my sketching abilities, and secure a good internship for over the summer…finishing up my junior year at school and excited to see what this summer and last year of school holds!

    My goal for 2018 is to refocus on my industrial design career. I've yet to get in my field but I'm encouraged by how many jobs you said you applied to and I like that you didn't give up on the sketch...although you weren't feeling it so much..."at least we tried, right?" That's the perspective of my life!
    I feel guilty wanting something I haven't been working towards so I need to get back to sketching. Thanks again for the video and encouragment!
    The bottom sketch looks like a star trek laser gun and the top sketch looks like a wakanda/blank panther flying ship! 👏👍✌

    well first of all, i have tryed for sure about 100 different jobs so far and i always felt like something was missing and i wasnt happy at all i had no time for the important things overall for myself, stuff that i realy care about, i was always fascinated by art/drawing but i never got into it, sometimes life keeps you busy all the time and wont let you see throu it anymore.. so like em.. i guess the past year i always wanted to start drawing and learn with every cell in my body and yea one week ago i started to learn things about basic shapes and ill try to find more time in the future for drawing and try to relax from the everyday stress, and yeah what else could i say :D... i started digital drawing cuz i dont realy want to waste paper bcuz i would feel very sad that trees have to die for my ugly beginner steps ^_^
    btw iam working at an animal shelter now and feel totaly comfortable with that i wouldnt change that even if other jobs getting paid more well
    your videos are amazing and ill try to watch them whenever i can :) keep going the amazing work !
    i am not close to be a good "designer" but even as a bloody beginner i learned a lot by your videos THNX for that :')

      Way to go... I wish you all the best. It’s really a ton of work. I applied there for transportation design for 2 years and unfortunately it didn’t work out for me. Started an industrial design program in the meantime and will try to apply for a masters in transportation design once I’m finished. One tip I can give you is sketch sketch sketch. Never stop

    Nice video, I liked the part about the 300-400 jobs you applied to, and the one about how a portfolio should be. Very useful, but my expectations about my "potentially bright future" had lowered 😅

    I have a few questions. I just graduated high school and am enrolled in Milwaukee's institute of art and design for this upcoming fall. I plan to study industrial design. But I am not the best at sketching....yet. I have pens and pencils but I haven't invested in any markers. I also just bought a new Microsoft surface book and was curious to what you thought about free software to learn to digitally sketch. Anything helps. I really enjoy your videos because of the insight you give.

    I wish there was something for me yeah. I am stuck on the HR Giger complex. But before he found some work. I got a multitude of crazy ideas, but so far, my situation can't even help me try to get on a road to UP... i'm stagnating BEFORE even finding a way up. I'm still in middle school 511th grade)... Let's say I had to redo two years so actually, I would have been graduated before but long story short, our school system is rather stern as well on wasting the last two years in a specific course. It's either, redoing two years in another course or redo the last with the same heavy one. I chose art, going from a studying only topic that leads to uni for mainly masters (doctor, economist, lawyer, etc), instead of simple highschool for bachelors. Now I'm stuck anyways with money and such...

I’m looking to get back into sketching and rendering and getting that dream job. So I need help finding work in the field for somebody with not a lot of experience in the Sanford Florida area thanks

    I couldn’t relate more to this video than my situation at the moment. I graduated in 2017 with a 1st class degree in Product Design, and went straight into a job following that as a CAD Designer.
    I now have 14 months experience in Industry alongside my Degree however have had no luck at trying to find my next career path. I have sent off 180+ applications in the past 4 months and havent as of yet had an interview.
    Please can you advise me on what you think the best move would be to help secure an interview?
    Thank you for your help

    • @Thesketchmonkey
      @Thesketchmonkey  6 лет назад

      Hey Ryan, it's tough without a personal network. To be honest with you I don't think I've ever had to mention my degrees or show a piece of paper or diploma to get hired. That's the power of having someone refer you for a job.
      I did however send out 300+ application for my first internship. Which was unpaid. Once you're in...
      If you don't have the network yet, I'd try to work on growing it. Network with people in the industry and let everyone know you're looking. Since you have experience, try offer some work for free. Ask them what they need help with and offer to help.

    What tips could you provide on making a design portfolio?
    I'm currently in my third year of Automotive Design and am hoping to go into Masters next year to further refine myself as designer and practice on my skills, therefore was wondering if you could give some advice on how to make a portfolio stand out to the employer, thank you.

    • @Thesketchmonkey
      @Thesketchmonkey  6 лет назад

      When it comes to your portfolio, think about what skill sets you want to highlight and what type of companies you want to work with. Tailor the portfolio to show those skills solving different design problems in creative ways.
      What companies want to see is problem solving and your thinking process. Ideation - refinement - final design and how/why you ended up with that design

    Thanks for the great video. It was very informative and I enjoyed every second of it. I have one question....It’s about going on to study a masters in transportation design. I’m from New York, and I recently applied to the University of Pforzheim in Germany to study a bachelor in transportation design and after two long years of working on a portfolio and 3 portfolio submissions, I never got accepted. I had a lot of professional help and still it didn’t work out. Since then, I started studying Industrial design at the University of Bolzano/Bozen in Bolzano, Italy with the goal of going on to study a masters in transportation design afterwards. The school here is good, but they don’t teach sketching at all, which in my case is not good if I still want to pursue transportation design. I absolutely love to sketch and try to sketch every day to improve myself on a daily basis. But just sketching on my own without any professional teaching most likely isn’t enough to get into a transportation design masters program after I’m done with my bachelor. So that’s my question to you...Do have any recommendations for me on what I could possibly pursue to get me to that next step? I know you’re probably extremely busy, but any advice you have would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a million and of course thanks for the videos.

    • @Thesketchmonkey
      @Thesketchmonkey  6 лет назад

      Contact previous students of Pforzheim and ask them for advice. Make sure you know what your portfolios are missing and what you need to improve and focus on that.

    • @stefanzampier591

      Marouane Bembli thanks so much for the feedback. I really appreciate it. I’ve been in contact with a previous student the last few years. He finished his bachelor in TD at Pforzheim last year I think. He gave me enormous amounts of help on each portfolio I submitted. He was really surprised I wasn’t accepted. Unfortunately I’ve already used up my 3 attempts to apply for a bachelor there. Maybe it just wasn’t meant to be. I’ll most likely try again at Pforzheim along with a few other schools when I start applying for a masters in a few years. Until then all I can do I guess is sketch sketch sketch and like you said focus on exactly what they want to see. Thanks again
