I’m one of those thousands of locals who were unfortunate enough to reach adulthood just as Thatcher chose “..managed decline..” for Merseyside along with Tebbits GET ON YOUR BIKE quote so joined the third of of the city’s population and moved away from everything I loved and seeing this wonderful upload frankly brings back the resentment and anger we felt back then . Best wishes.
Ditto via Germany, Australia, Scotland, Liverpool and New Zealand (since 2008) but always a Birkenhead boy. Dad and brother served their time in Lairds and I had summer holiday jobs in the West Float dry dock caulking a fishing smack at 11 years old. All but my immediate family (all Scousers) still on Wirral. Thanks for the post 👍
Nice video. Thanks. The Two ships are replenishment at sea (RAS) vessels, transferring fuel, munitions, and stores from one ship to another while under way.
I don't think they've ever built nuclear submarines in Birkenhead although they'd build the last of the Royal Navy's diesel electric submarines. Regarding the two supply ships I read that under EU rules two of the latest built for the Navy were built in Korea. EU members are allowed to build their own warships but the EU decreed that the supply ships were principally merchant vessels and therefore should be put out to tender to all ship builders in the EU. The tender was won by a Danish company who then subcontracted it to their Korean subsidiary. Which just shows you what rules and lawyers can do.
Shame nothing new being constructed on the slip , surely they can or should have put new sheds in place and built type 26 frigates there also not just in Scotland….
In a vote on what to name it public wanted to call it boaty macboatface but they ignored the Democratic vote. As a consolation gave the name to one of its unmanned submersibles.

Both grey ships are Royal Fleet Auxiliary Ships (RFA), not warships such as type 42,s etc.

They built 2 Polaris nuclear boats, Renown and Revenge, as well as one nuclear powered fleet submarine HMS Conqueror (of Falklands conflict fame)
Thanks my mistake I thought all nuclear submarines were built at Barrow@@R_McGeddon117
