Your advice is right on. You absolutely want to do it in person in USA at an office. Also have it deposited to a bank in the USA and just transfer to where you want it. I took mine 5 years ago, I'm 67 now. I am married no minor kids, but am at the end of my divorce process now. Tax advisor said I won't even have to file tax return. There are advantages if you do for collecting stimulus payments, but may not apply to you.
I have thought of that as well but am hesitant to do that. Some Filipinos are petty and vindictive when you try and get them moving or correct them when they are wrong....not all but some. They call this Onion Skinned. I would rather not get my record flagged as a trouble maker 🤬 I have been working this process for 9 months now and still waiting, they will supposedly back pay you to when you applied. So look at your waiting time as forced savings......not what I want but what can you do? Fortunately Social Security isn't my only source of income.
I talked to SSA in manila. They are a pain to get in touch with. My suggestion, either you or your wife start calling at 8 am on Tuesday and Thursdays until you get to talk to someone. You may have to call several times. I had to call for 3 weeks, just hitting redial when I got the message that they was busy or get hung up on. once I finally got through, I was told that they tried to call me and that they had send me letters that I have never gotten. They was about to dismiss my case because they dropped the ball.
Had my 13a for almost 5 years now it is coming up for renewal this month. I understand what you are saying about starting social security in the states. That wasn't an option for me being I retired at age 55 so now that I am 63 and have 2 children I figured I better get things started......what a mess it is to get anything done over here. You are right about that.
Yes sir JD. My friend Paul McGill just got back from Cebu doing his 13A that’s my next quest after getting my daughter’s passport and social security number. Good luck with your social security hopefully you will have better luck than I did 😊🙏🏻
@@crewfamilyphilippines I was thinking the same thing for you. I have been waiting 9 months so far, I am hoping your wait times aren't near as bad as mine so far. I will message you when mine finally goes through.
Monty your best bet is fly to Manila and spend a few days there....more realistic than going back to U.S...... just rent a place in Manila for a few days....there are cheaper hotels in Manila...it would be costly.....but it would be costly if going back to the U.S.......🙏🙏🙏
Personal application is the best. I agree. I applied mine during Covid times and verification of ID is through mail and SS wanted original in which Im anxious of them getting lost. The ordeal was ok. Good luck Monty.
Yes, I’m filing for my regular Social Security at 62 then I will work on my disability after that starts Iron . Thank you for watching, and your comment
From my reading, you can't collect both SS disability benefits and SS retirement benefits at the same time. * * * FROM SSA SITE * * * Social Security disability benefits automatically change to retirement benefits when disability beneficiaries become full retirement age. The law does not allow a person to receive both retirement and disability benefits on one earnings record at the same time.Oct 7, 2022
SSI is NOT SSDI! The only way I am aware of, to be eligible for BOTH SSI, and SSD, is IF your SSD award is lower than @$800.00 monthly? I’m not sure of the ceiling… Beware of SSI! You will be cut off, if they learn you’re living abroad!!! You might sneak by, for a while, but, once they find out, you’ll have to repatriate, for 90? days, before SSI will restart!
I was so impressed hearing in another video about all the different businesses you ran in the U.S.. Very impressive! I am so sorry to hear about your Pneumonia. We all hope the meds you have will get you feeling better soon. That darn Social Security. I wish they made it easier to file from the Philippines. Take care, and blessings to your wonderful family.
Thank you so very much Gene. I’m feeling much better than I was for sure. Hopefully the Social Security will go smoothly after this. At least I’m praying for that. I hope all is well in your world brother may God bless you too.
Good Luck Monty and your Crew. Not anticipating more problems but how often do the USA SS want you to prove you are still alive. This maybe another headache you may encounter.
I know Martin. That’s why I was trying to do everything in the USA so I could have that letter mailed to me there every year to prove that I’m still alive. If they mail it to me in the Philippines I’ll never get the letter for proof of life 😞
@@crewfamilyphilippinesI've heard too many horror stories about guys not receiving those dead letters and suddenly their checks stop ugh. I don't trust the systems at all. Too many incompetent government workers
I filed 3 years ago here in the Philippines with my Philippines address. All was easy and went smooth. I applied 90 days before my birthday and my first direct deposit was right on time. As for the 13A, its easy to do yourself, no reson to spend so much for someone else to just make money off you. Hopefully everything works out good for you, take care.
good info, did you apply in Manila office? or did you do it online? Also good to know about the 13A paperwork. 75k php is high if you have to do it twice, unless that includes both filings.
@@kevink1214 , I applied online for SS and phone interview with Manila office, very easy and Manila office set up my direct deposit to my Philippines bank. The 13A visa is easy to do , total cost for both probation year and change to permanent status was P21k.
Pre Covid the office used to run pretty efficiently. Since Covid either they are milking things or they got rid of 75% of the staff.......not sure but it's very tedious getting anything done now post covid.
@@JDWard-Jeepster did my SS during COVID-19 and went well, but they reduced the staff now and it's not running as good now. As for 13A immigration is running smoothly now and 13a will be easy as ever to do.
Sorry to hear you are having troubes to get you Social Security. In Canada you can start Canada Pension at 60. I started mine at 63 as I wanted to clear my debt before coming here so I had no troubles. I talked to a guy yesterday that plans to retire here and said he will make sure his Social Security is started and has a few cheques to make sure it is working before moving here. Hopefully you can get your fixed soon.
I did my application and interview over the phone for disability at 55. And had to Fedex some papers. But I have never been to a SS office ever. They gave it to me first try since arthritis so bad I could not go into work anymore. I think the reason I got it first try is because I had worked at ATT for almost 25 years.
Our experienced with SSA pension ( while we were in Ohio, we’ve processed it year 2002, two months before my husband retired at the age of 62 (/we’ve opted for early retirement then we’ve worked out his VA meds too ) and proceeds monthly was direct deposits to our US, checking account. Then we went home to Philippines and waited for it, oh by the way our three children also received till they’ve turn 18th. Hearing your problems filing here in the Philippines, my heart goes out for you guys.
Monty it’s unlikely you would owe any taxes on your Social Security. You would have to have additional income in excess of $25,000 before you pay any tax on your Social Security benefits.
Hi mark I pray for your full recovery and fulfill your duty to god and family I do the best for the rest of your life and it's better to live a simple life to maintain the real happiness s family that stay and pray together not in friends or and extra social activities just stay foot to your family in the end happiness will stay on you
While I was in the states, I did the SSA phone interview for my social security. Took 15 min and was done. Been collecting my SS for 4 years now and retired in cebu city. My wife and I did our 13A by ourselves at a cost of 11500 pesos each part. Just a lot of running around. Not hard at all.
I would suggest that you apply for Social Security Disability and then file for SS Retirement. My understanding is that you can do both at the same time. You should be approved for SSDI but there is no guarantee as SSDI would pay the higher amount of age 67 versus age 62 early retirement. So you can collect Social Security early retirement while you wait on SSDI. I have no clue how an SSDI application would be processed outside of the USA as it is processed at a state level, so you probably will have to apply online and use your US address for the SSDI. Ask the US Embassy SS office.
And they may back date it to when he had his stroke and he could possibly be eligible for backpay...might be worth contacting a lawyer in whatever state he last worked. They can check his work details and see what's what. Keep your head up!
Yes, my plan is James that I will file for Social Security at 62. Then later file for disability benefits. That way at least we will have some income while we wait 😊
@@crewfamilyphilippinesEDITED: I now better understand what you meant and have provided an updated comment below. If SSDI is granted, your SSDI benefits simply turn into SS retirement benefits at age 67.

I hear his story and I do not see where the SS offices did anything that was outside of the normal protocol. He unfortunately missed some timelines due to his own actions. He should have educated himself on SSI sign up requirements. And since he does not work, he has had all time he needs to research on his computer every SSI timeline and option. I work full time 60 hour a week and study the SSI process like it was a college exam. In his case luck had nothing to do with his problem.

Unfortunately the 10 day cut off is a bummer if you are not in country . perhaps 30 days or 90 days should be the maximum to respond. @crewfamilyphilippines I did some more digging on that its kind of confusing no surprise there 😅 found one place that had the 30 day rule and another that said only if your giving up US citizenship I'm just gonna wait till January when the disability I get becomes a permanent part of my ssa play it safe took me a solid year to get the disability bumped me from $1400 to a little over $2000 after Jan that becomes ssa not disability anymore so they definitely can't take it back I doubt I'll be ready for a move before then anyway 😀 good luck with yours the don't make it easy 👍
Best to hire an attorney, if you’re going for SSD! Not one of those SSI mills, but a competent attorney! They don’t take a bloody fortune, as the law limits how much they get…are you at least 62?

I know every little bit helps. Our little family is trying to help you by helping out till you are able to cross the social security finish line. Praying for you all
Your family benefit should equal at least 1/2 of your monthly benefit amount. This depends on how old you are when you start to draw. If you’re on SSD, or age 62, but not Full Retirement Age, it’s half. At FRA, its as much as 2/3rds Feel better soon

I hope things turn around for you. Now should I get my Social Security this coming Wednesday I will order my flight to Dumaguete that same day as I’m moving there and my grandson will rent out my house. It’s been 5 long years since I’ve seen my beautiful girlfriend even tho we do FaceTime each night…I hoped to meet you for coffee at some point.
I’m sorry to hear that you’re having a headache with it too. Hopefully everything will go through smoothly for you now. I look forward to meeting you here Marc 😊
Yeah but having an address here in Negros is a joke there are no street addresses. You never get your mail for months if ever. They send you a proof of life letter every year most of the people don’t get it and your money stops. So having an address in the Philippines is a joke
You should really contact an attorney and have him apply on your behalf as you do not seem aware of all the benefits you are entitled to, particularly when it comes to disability and both your wife and daughter monetary benefits. The attorney will accept a portion of your monthly earnings until you have paid his fees. They normally quote a flat fee for services.

You may have to call several times. I had to call for 3 weeks, just hitting redial when I got the message that they was busy or get hung up on. once I finally got through, I was told that they tried to call me and that they had send me letters that I have never gotten. They was about to dismiss my case because they dropped the ball.
Yes sir that’s what I’m working on. My friend Paul is also trying to work with a person that he knows in the embassy as well
Had my 13a for almost 5 years now it is coming up for renewal this month.
Good luck on your SS, hope to see you soon. 👍👍👍
Thank you. I look forward to seeing you Joe 😊💛
And hopefully if you get to Manila they will prioritize you in line since you are disable.....🙏🙏🙏
Yes, that is my plan, but I would have to have an appointment you can’t just walk in
Sorry to hear about the issues they are putting you through. Keep the faith and it will happen.
Thank you Steve that’s the plan Brother 🙏🏻😊
Monty, I suggest you file for both social security retirement and social security disability.
Yes, I’m filing for my regular Social Security at 62 then I will work on my disability after that starts Iron . Thank you for watching, and your comment
From my reading, you can't collect both SS disability benefits and SS retirement benefits at the same time.

Social Security disability benefits automatically change to retirement benefits when disability beneficiaries become full retirement age.

I’m not sure of the ceiling…
Beware of SSI! You will be cut off, if they learn you’re living abroad!!!
You might sneak by, for a while, but, once they find out, you’ll have to repatriate, for 90? days, before SSI will restart!
Sorry to hear things are going so bad for you. I can only hope that things get better and that everything works out for you and your family.
Thank you very much for your kind words Neil 😊
I was so impressed hearing in another video about all the different businesses you ran in the U.S.. Very impressive! I am so sorry to hear about your Pneumonia.

I filed 3 years ago here in the Philippines with my Philippines address.

I applied 90 days before my birthday and my first direct deposit was right on time.
As for the 13A, its easy to do yourself, no reson to spend so much for someone else to just make money off you.
Hopefully everything works out good for you, take care.
Thank you for the advice and information 😊 hopefully it will go smoothly for me as well
good info, did you apply in Manila office? or did you do it online?

That’s a very smart idea Brian. He’s a smart man.

I did my application and interview over the phone for disability at 55. And had to Fedex some papers. But I have never been to a SS office ever. They gave it to me first try since arthritis so bad I could not go into work anymore. I think the reason I got it first try is because I had worked at ATT for almost 25 years.
I’m sorry to hear that Lottie. I’m happy that you were able to get your disability though 😊

I agree, I would try the disability route!
Yes, my plan is James that I will file for Social Security at 62. Then later file for disability benefits. That way at least we will have some income while we wait 😊

@@ericlee2931 well.. Due to postal delivery times one would think 10 days is cutting it close.. Yes.. Unfortunately the 10 day cut off is a bummer if you are not in country . perhaps 30 days or 90 days should be the maximum to respond. Never had any problem filing for social security here, just make sure you have a Philippines address here, not virtual mail box in US.
Yes I’m working on that as well Kray. I’m not shy about using the wheelchair. It’s hard for my wife to push it so I push it until I’m tired and I just sit in it for awhile 😊
