When i saw him live he did the same thing when someone went to the toilet...pointed it out, paused his act, talked about her, then just before she came back he told us all to act normal. then roasted her. It was so good
When I saw him live somebody left for the toilet or something, and during that time he got the audience to agree to laugh at something specific on cue after he got back. Then after the guy returned and it happened, Jimmy looked at him and asked him why he wasn't laughing
Jimmy did a corporate award ceremony I was at years ago (he's known for doing a shit load of corporate gigs). He did a great set and then handed out the awards. He'd done his homework, made lots of really smart jokes about the industry, but he never made the award winners the butt of any of them. He understood he was there to entertain, but he was really careful not to do anything to ruin the night for the winners. We'd had comedians with much less skill in previous years and since, never saw anyone judge that gig so perfectly.
Never be afraid to sit in the front row, most comedians don't attack the audience like this - this is why these acts are famous. Most comedians are just happy that people are there laughing. Only a few are skilled enough to riff off of the audience like Jimmy Carr and Dara OBriain do.
As a very regular comedy store attendee please ignore this advice. MANY acts still do "interact" with the front row. The problem is the less skilled ones are less funny. It is quite an old routine now and I wish the new generation of comics would retire it.
@@artful1967 I like it, if the comedian is good and the jokes funny. How insecure you have to feel to be taken aback by random silly comments about yourself, or ridiculous theories about why you did something everyone does anyway, like going to the bathroom? It's a joke.
I don't know about pausing it that time, but i've been to a few Jimmy Carr tours when he comes to my town and he did stop it for almost 20 minutes humming to himself waiting for a bloke to come back from the toilet. Gave him shit, about taking so long to pleasure himself lmao
Taskmaster is a pretty popular British comedy show now- 10+ seasons already. The premise of the show is that comedians compete against each other in a massive range of ridiculous tasks. James Acaster’s series was probably the best, although the exotic sandwich challenge was probably the best of all time.
3:43 - "Come up with a better story..." Jasper Carrot (a 1970's British comedian) explained his facial scar by saying: "so...I was defending the house from a gang of pirates..." LOL - having a nick still on my face from that time I tried to shave when I was three...I appreciated that joke :)
I have seen Jimmy live a couple of times. He definitely would pause the show waiting for someone to come back. Would love to get tickets for the front row, but no luck yet.
Jimmy's shows/dvds are worth watching in full as he sometimes mixes in different segments every now and then (in this case the sofa interviews) but he's also done parts with illustrated gags on a projector screen, t-shirts with custom slogans, letters of correspondence he's written...and several others I'm probably forgetting!
I only worry sometimes that he is so innocent lol..... watching us Brits and Aussies who literally roast the hell out of everyone..... the US is so G rated sometimes lol
Thats exactly why you want to sit up the front at a Jimmy Carr show, to get roasted. And when you go with your adult kids you know it will be a free for all.
I’m sure somebody has already mentioned this, but the mum in the front row clip goes on much longer in another version. He gets some more mileage out of that.
Stephan fry once said that the difference between American and European comedy is The European ability to make themselves the butt of the joke, and that American is about making the other person feel like the butt of the joke... (Paraphrasing)... In the end if you can't belittle yourself you can't belittle others is the European way.... And is at least 10 times as funny in my opinion
Dara Ó Briain is brilliant with the audience. He's not as harsh, but he chit chats to different people throughout the show and then at the end makes up a ludicrous story where he weaves in parts of the different stories and it's hilarious. It's truly impressive how he remembers everything people said.
In the UK they can do a 3 hour or more show, some times 5 hours, in big venues they some times have seats to sit and rest between their set monologues, 5 hours on your feet is a long time.
In modern usage, slag and slut are mostly the same. The difference is in some of the underlying meanings. Slut tends to suggest dirtiness or sloppiness, but slag means worthless or low class. So a bit more offensive, but generally the same. Personally, while I enjoy Frankie Boyle, I always feel unsure how serious he is. It's a bit harder to laugh at some of his stuff because of it. With Jimmy you always know he's joking, which makes him funnier.
Jimmy hosted a couple of game shows called Your Face or Mine (where couples rank their own attractiveness against others) and Distraction (where the quiz questions are the simplest but there's always a catch, like the buzzer electrocuting you). He pretty much takes the piss out of the contestants throughout!
You won me over with this one. I've been watching you a bit, but if you can understand Jimmy Carr, I'm in. His style has changed over the years, early on he would sit on a sofa or chair and deliver a lot of quick fire jokes, sometimes with video graphics. Anyway. Loving your channel, have subbed, look forward to more.
There are so many amazing British comedians, I think one thing about ours compared to Americans (from what I've seen) is how much everyone is so different from each other. Anyway, I'd recommend Jon Richardson or Ricky Gervais
the couch is just a bit he will do for 5 or ten mins, he sometimes sits at a desk, the best one he invited a guy to come sit with him that ended up being a funeral director so there were some quality jokes

Oh yeah. The sofa thing is part of the show. I don't know if he gets tired or what, but he often spends at least some portion of his shows sitting down. Interview chairs in one show. Sofa in that one. Daisis in another. And so on.
Jimmy often has different bits he'll do between his usual jokes and often he'll sit at a desk or on a couch for that bit. Like he'll talk about joke advertisements or personal ads he put in newspapers, or have an audience member interview him etc.
Read other comments, but didn't see anyone answer your question. But I didn't actually read all the way, to be fair. A slag is a bad insult thrown at woman who is very sexually active, who sleeps around.
I was in the audience for a Frankie Boyle gig... It was a valentines present.. We were drinking heavily before he turned up 2 hours late. So we were all aloud 2 free drinks. But the guys beside us has smuggled in 2 bottles of vodka and 8 cans of special brew...
