This video just inspired me - Super Mario DOOM! Mario, Luigi and Peach would be variants of the space marine, Toad would technically be an ally using a repurposed arachnatron body, Yoshi would be like the helper dog creatures, etc.
The Bowsers of the castles where you find the Toads are fake Bowsers, this is proven when you kill the fake Bowsers with fireballs (they turn into other enemies), the real Bowser is the one of the last level.
