THE INTIMATE STORY OF THE "INDEPENDENT CHURCH" (AIPCA) AND MAU MAU - BISHOP CHARLES MIRIE KAGO

  • The African Independent Pentecostal Church of Africa (AIPCA), commonly known as the Independent Church or "Indi," was the "official church of Mau Mau" if there was such a thing. The overwhelming majority of the political leaders in Mt. Kenya, from Kiambu in the South to Meru in the East, were members of this church. A large segment of the rank and file Mau Mau soldiers and Mau Mau supporters were Indi adherents as well. The church, according to Bishop Mirie, one of the prominent leaders of the church in Kiambu County, had been started by Kikuyu elders as a way of going around the colonial prohibition against important Kikuyu cultural practices such as customary marriage, traditional dances and female circumcision. The founders of the church were also unhappy with the limited modern education that was being availed to African children at the time. They therefore started self-help schools, run by their new church. The church was among the very first African political institutions to be banned by the colonial authorities when the Mau Mau war broke out, for a good reason: the church supported oath taking and the armed struggle. Actually, the Independent Church was banned almost a year earlier than the Kenya African Union (KAU), the pre-independence political party, which was banned in 1953. More than 300 of its schools were closed down by the colonial authorities, including its only institution of higher learning, the Kenya Teachers College, Githunguri, which had been modelled against Columbia Graduate Teachers College, Mbiyu Koinange's Alma Marta. In this very college, a Pan-African congress had been held in the late 1940s, attended by key Pan-Africanists of the time. In this very enlightening interview, Bishop Mirie also gives an account of the reinstatement of the church after independence, the stigma it suffered as result of its association with violence, its struggle to regain its schools and property from the government and from other Christian churches, and the bitter wrangles that wracked the church in the past, which he says was a deliberate strategy being implemented by detractors to weaken the church. #maumau # #aipca #aipcakigooco #kenya #kenyatta #africanliberation #africanhistory

The guest mentioned Arthur Gatung’u, my father’s friend when I was a young man growing up in Kawangware. I can still see Arthur being chauffeured in his white Toyota Crown while officiating church affairs at the Orthodox Church in Kawangware.

He has narrated the story so well but i disagree with him when he says that Kenyatta was Independent and was buried by the Kahihia. The service was ecumenical with Presbyterians taking the lead, John Gatu lead the service, Charles Muhoro Preached , Jeremiah Gitau lead the internment service all of them Presbyterians, other churches were slotted space in the liturgy including Kahihia who prayed at some point. Thank you

Of all the churches, why was Kahihia allowed to take part in Kenyatta's funeral?

he said he could not openly be a member and i can see why the colonizers did not let go tis country even now look at them controlling gava, thats why uhuru you could see in his presidency he was involved in solving disputes so theres some truth

@@maumauchronicles4296 All church leaders took part in the funeral , Kahihia as the patriarch of the Independent church fell in the liturgy by his potion not because Kenyatta was Indi, he had never received their sacraments, even Mbiu Koinange said he was not independent when they sung Muthirigu to him saying "Mbiyu ona ari muthomu niararegire kuhikia Kirigu," He felt embarrassed, also leaders of KAU like Harry Thuku the founders of the independent movement,,,, they all walked out of the church and went back to the churches that had baptized them. Kenyatta told Mahihu he was Presbyterian by baptism and so a church that baptizes you owes you a funeral ..... when he died the first person to be called to statehouse was Gatu was was in Adis traveling to India , he came back and led a delegation of protestant clergy to statehouse to view the body ,,,,,,

In that case, you should complain bitterly when Presidents, Ministers, judges and others take an oath of office using the Bible.

sema church zenu like we are been told over and over those other churches were coming to fight the african mind because when people lift bibiles to swear what is that? Doctors take an oath to save lives so they should not take oaths also? that was colonialisim and those churches are still colonial
