  • Ireland's workhouses were a significant part of the country's social welfare system during the 19th century, particularly during the Great Famine (1845-1852). These workhouses were established under the Irish Poor Laws, which were based on the British Poor Law system. The primary purpose of the workhouses was to provide relief to the poor and destitute, including the unemployed, elderly, sick, and orphaned. This is a history of them.

I’d be surprised if the vast majority of people in the UK, didn’t have ancestors who at sometime or other, didn’t find themselves in the work house. My family certainly did…they were very different times.

Same story as here in England. Many of the buildings have been converted to apartments.

Same story? Hardly. How many English were forced to immigrate to flee starvation caused by the British government?

Many hospitals in the UK are on the site of what was once a workhouse.

Millions. Maybe not at once, but in total millions. Starvation and diseases forced English people to flee constantly. The life expectancy for a slave in America was twice as high as the average life expectancy of a Brit. @MK-ui6gt

The first indentured servants brought to America were English. People don't hear about how poorly the working class English were treated because we don't moan about it.

Polititians are one big sect. Their families just take turns, both those on power and the opposition. They all coordinate and make distractions . Take poor Serbs for example, they are being stupified through reality shows, trashy music , law salaries and poor social care. There are so many people who literally live from one meal to the next. I would sometimes sleep the day off because there wasn't any food in the house. Now , I strive to help the needy neighbours with some food left from lunch , clothes, shoes. This is terrible , all those children. I knew just a small part but this is horrid. Irish people in my heart😢❤

My Roscommon mother also said "A hungry man is an angry man." Did your mother have any Irish relations?

Why did the video have an image claiming Brian Ború was the last High King of Ireland? He wasn't. He wasn't by FAR. Brian Ború died in 1014 as Viking forces fled the Battle of Clontarf. The last High King of Ireland, Ruaidrí Ua Conchobair, died in 1198.

Excellent documentary! So many things you report on reminds me of Ecclesiastes 8:9 in the Bible "... man has dominated man to his harm" (New World Translation). Take care my friend.

I live with my husband and son in Belgium, we love to work but if all 3 of us work full time jobs then we pay a high tax on incomes almost 56% therefore I accepted a job 20 hours a week. As much as you make this mafia government takes a half. Awful

The British government was no different from all the other governments of their time. It just looks that way when it is personal to you. The only time the British stood out in the world was when they were doing good bot bad
