Gaoshun said: "don't worry about the pregnancy part. What is more important, is it possible for two identical people to sneak away despite being observed 24/7?" It seems like Gaoshun was asking Maomao for a different reason.
To give you an idea, Zach. Mirrors were originally made out of Silver (Which btw, is why Vampires cannot see their reflection. Silver's a "holy" metal and the bane of the undead.) And so a full sized one was just prohibitively expensive. Glass mirrors was a Technology brought from the west to the east, and during this general time period would've been considered an insanely expensive gift.
>Both envoys look similar to the twins in the story >After the opening, you can see the two envoys being watched by guards in the same positions as the guards in the twins story. >One of the envoys left and met someone(Shishou/Loulan's father) in secret. Now you can know why Gaoshun asked Maomao about it and he changed the story, he wanted to know how one of the envoys could sneak out without being noticed by the guards
That was also the reason why they brought the mirrors as gifts to the consorts, so that it wouldn't be suspicious if they brought mirrors too for themselves
@@neolio1 This is not a spoiler because if you don't understand this part, you won't understand it forever because it's not discussed again in other episodes.
They seem to be emphasizing duality this season. The twinning in the OP, the impersonation of the concubine, the two sisters, two Maomaos, the two faces or two animals per artwork, mirrors…
2:30 - Well, it's just a frog. JUST. A. FROG. 4:10 - Gyokuyou pouting because she wanted to surprise Maomao and brag, but Maomao is too well-educated and pragmatic... so cute! ^__^ 4:20 - Big glass mirrors weren't around for a long time, only when humans mastered the technique of making big flat sheets of transparent glass (colorless transparent glass was very hard to make back then) those started to emerge around 16th century. Before that, glass mirrors existed, but those were concave, as those were usually made from tin-plated shattered glass spheres. According to Wikipedia, one mirror like this in the episode went for a price of a SHIP. For a very long time mirrors were usually polished bronze or similar metals (gold, platinum, tin, etc.), or they used mercury to make amalgamated mirror-like surfaces (ot more common and less toxic tin). 6:10 - Honestly, this is the biggest inconsistence in the story. Hongniang was very interested in Gaoshun as a potential husband for a long time, as we could see in the first episode of this season (and manga and LN also mentioned this fact)... but we're in the inner palace! The only kind of men allowed here are eunuchs! And even if Gaoshun is only posing as one (as we saw in season 1), Hongniang shouldn't know this, what exactly she was looking for in his case, when she wants her own kids? 8:00 - Yep, phantom pregnancies are a thing and probably the biggest example of a self-induced placebo effect. Remember how Pairin is able to produce milk even she isn't pregnant? Stress, often from traumatic events (such as previous miscarriage or abortion) can also induce it as part of the phanton pregnancy syndrome. 16:40 - Well, countries in this world are purely fictional (there is a map of the world made by the author which confirms this), but in this case it's probably referencing... Turkey or Persia or Balkans or something similar "from the west"? 22:38 - Concubine Loulan, if you forgot how she looks like) There are a few more things to note, but it's better to talk about those in the next episode. P.S. They keep adding more sneaky "teasing" things that could be seen as a big spoilers for the next events... honestly, I don't really like it, but I notice those things only because I'm a LN reader, so I don't know if the first-time viewers also notice those...
As a LN reader I totally agree with you, like when they added Rikuson in s1 it was alright, I was kinda happy about that, Shusui sneaking around when Jinshi came to visit Loulan in the first ep of s2 was bearable, but in this ep they did a little too much, I mean... you can even spot the mole if you look close enough, how much more obvious can it get
Could also just be Central Asia, which would still have been west of Ancient China. A lot of people don’t realize that red (and likely blonde) hair actually originated in Central Asia (near the Caspian Sea), not Europe. They wouldn’t actually have to go that far west to find a pair of blonde women.
@@Lahann_ Well, Rikuson is just Lakan's aide here who literally does nothing, his appearing in literally one scene for 5 seconds is just a nod off to the LN readers who recognize a familiar side character. When they continiously started showing Loulan here and there from the end of season 1 like "look at her! she is important character!" it was annoying, yeah, but understandable. But now they are almost starting to throw spoilers in the viewers' faces (I'm already seeing people discussing these spoilers in the comments under the other reaction videos) and yeah, it's a bit too much. Like... \\\ SPOILER BELOW!!! /// . . . . . . . . . . . . . . ...blatantly showing one of the envoys meeting Loulan's dad in secret... at this point it's almost like "the butler did it" kinda thing... 2 things.. 1 did anybody catch the part were the other lady wanted to be apart of Gaoshun and Maomao's conversation, then lost interest when she found out he was married. Second look at the painting and the orbs of light that were arround the woman. She was said to be blessed by moon faries. That glowing butterfly... perhaps. 🤔
17:13 - Two things worth noting here: The Ottoman Turks weren’t the only Turks in the world. There’s a collection of closely related cultures broadly referred to as Turkic, stretching from Turkey itself to Ukraine (Crimean Tatars, the indigenous people of Crimea) to parts of western Russia, then north to Siberia, back south through all of the Stans (Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, Krygyz Republic, Pakistan, etc), parts of Iran, Northern India, and NW China (the Uyghur). Almost all of which would be “from the west” by Ancient China’s view. That’s a pretty broad area to choose from. Secondly, red and blonde hair actually originate from Central Asia, not Europe; only reason why they’re more common in Europe is a combination of founder’s effect, physical isolation (meaning limited gene pool, so those first people’s genes spread around faster), and a slightly more favorable environment (lots of dark forested areas and polar regions with less sunlight, favoring lighter skin and any other genes that tended to be along for the ride). It’s actually not uncommon to find Turkic and Mongol people with naturally blonde or red hair, without any trace of European ancestry. In fact, the country with the highest concentration of natural redheads outside of NW Europe is Tajikistan!
Jinshi is so beautiful most people would feel like Makoto next to him😂 I would feel like a swamp monster 😂😭 I loved Maomao was like, let’s just drug them😂
Crossdress. Haven’t heard that particular word since the animated version of Mulan when the ancestors were talking about Mulan taking her father’s place in the army. This is gonna be fun dressing Jinshi as a woman from the makeup, the hair and the build. Can’t wait for next week!!!
My father had a stainless steel mirror he bought in the military. It was 12x18 or so and I was more impressed by it than a regular glass mirror. It was very handy for camping.
Just a quick opinion on what you said about alternative medicine or tradicional medicine in the beginning of the episode: I find it possible that people are just overly sceptical over it because it is "old, not modern, etc" but think about it, if they experimented with it, used it for thousands of years it had to have SOME effect. Or else they wouldnt use those specific things. Obviously nothing can beat some of the more modern medicines, but there are a LOT of simple illnesses that can be treated by just herbs, food, minerals, natural ingredients, even fasting. People of modern times tend to forget people of the old were not stupid, they also used everything they could and find out to help people, and what worked worked. edit: also wow, I never knew false pregnancy is not really known as something that can happen. I though that was common knowledge (not because it happens so often but because I dont even know how young I was when I first heard it CAN happen :D )
The thing about "alternate" medicine is, if it actually worked, it just became medicine. A good example is snake oil. It's traditional medicine brought over from Chinese immigrants, but became associated with scam products because a lot of people made their own knock-off product from the local snakes, which lacked the compound that made the medicine work in the first place. That compound? Omega-3 fatty acids, which you now can simply buy over the counter.
Do have to agree with what you've said. It's easy to forget that history is generally continuous, and all the ideas from modern medicine came from somewhere. We build upon evidence, and yes, not all of it will be recorded and reported to our current standards, but that shouldn't be a reason to dismiss whatever data we were able to gather. The all medicine would have had to come from nature back then, and the modern drugs we use are pretty unusual structures, it makes sense that they would be found in some concentration in strange things that are prized in traditional medicine. Synthetic chemistry is very difficult even with high purity sources, which will be refined from the natural world at some point down the chain, and they'd be trying to achieve the same effects through pure trial and error. Traditional medicine is a marvel when you think about it and it definitely deserves enough respect for academic rigor to be applied to its verification.
@@randomchannel9473 Lot of time it feels like people think that old things go obsolete just because newer things get discovered. Those stuff still work and most of the time I do find them more reliable in the long run. Modern medicine treats symptoms, but a lot of traditiconal medicine actually helps with the actual origin of the sickness.
