An another way to look at it is to notice how Adam (representing all of mankind) barely reaches out to God, and leans on to the earth. Meanwhile God reaches out fully to reach Adam, because God loves us and wants to be with us but as humans with a sinful nature, we barely make an effort to reach for God and rather cling on to earthly things.

If he doesn’t then any interpretations oftentimes hold much less substance than the original message as one can only hope to understand what’s inside someone else’s head, the only clues being an author’s biography and background. If I take, say Norman Rockwell’s “Freedom of Speech” and say “Well, I see this as a poorly-clad worker standing up to the oppression of the well-dressed bourgeoisie as he’s the one who gets to speak over them”, that interpretation would sort of work, yet ludicrously disregard the original idea that everyone deserves equal freedom of speech; the social standing of men depicted was picked out by Rockwell for a whole another set of ideas, certainly not socialistic or revolutionary ones. How can one express his own ideas in a world where everyone interprets them in their own selfish, often self-serving ways?
The shape of the drapery resembling a brain could also be a representation of God as the mind which operates creation. This would also have interesting implications since it looks like God the father is spilling out of the drapery with all the other figures as if the representation of God is not really what God is, just how God chooses to represent himself to Adam.
Carl Jung wrote that there was another meaning behind the religion. That God was the mind, when you pray its really meditation, to remind you of everything good you have. That heaven and hell were 2 different states of mind irregardless of your situation you could live your life in either great ecstacy or great despair depending on the way you perceived the world. And that you could be an angel or devil depending on which of those states you influenced in those around you.
Masterful video. I think many people take the idea of Gods being man's creation as degrading or even blasphamous, but when you look at the issue as humans creating ideas that could unite them, inspire them, teach them, and lead them better than they could themselves than it is beautiful. Gods being our creation doesn't make it degrading just as Human rights, Laws against slavery, or Ideals of freedom being our creation doesn't make it degrading. Religions and governments are reflections of our common traditions and values made manifest in a form of scripture, law, or just common decency. Sometimes we hold onto traditions for far too long and that's when an outdated law or a religious dogma may start to become too restrictive - our values change with time and conditions after all. I gained this amazing insight from the book *Sapies: Brief History of Humankind* by *Yuval Noah Harari* - it reads like a novel and packs more knowledge than a college degree. I would heartily recommend it to you.

in my subjective opinion i think the painting represents humanity and the relationship they have with god, that why their fingers aren't touching. god is reaching out arm fully extended trying to reach and touch Adam, but Adam's hand is relaxed and unextend, all Adam has to do is to put his finger up and he has touch god but in the painting he's choosing not to do so, not only to me does it represent creation but also free will. again it's my opinion Michelangelo if he was still around would probably debunk what I said, but he's not around it's up to use to decided what things mean to us.
I like the second interpretation, it makes sense. My teacher never asked my class to interpret it in our way. We’re always taught one interpretation at school and it’s the first one showed in this video. As if it was the correct one.

There is an artwork by Damien Hirst that explores the an uncannily inverted concept of this painting by Michaelangelo entitled 'The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living'. Regardless of how you interpret it, who doesn't love a mystery at the end of a day? Perhaps even the notion of God (or the workings of our own mind) being elusive, fickle or slightly beyond our reach is also what's just as enduring about this. Staring up at the roof evokes awe and wonder, much like our ancestors gazing up at the sky wondering. Dreaming. Imagining.

Wow I’ve never thought of this painting as Adam creating “God” but now it makes so much sense. With the idea of God being in the brain and almost a thought of Adam, I’m interpreting this picture as Adam reaching for a perfect ideal version of himself, his highest self, and that is the idea of God. It’s above him, just out of reach, and you can tell Adam doesn’t have full faith in himself, which is why he’s lazily reaching out. But God has full faith in him, which is why He’s reaching out so confidently and erect. I think it’s perfectly fitting of what we as humans deal with when we’re trying to become better people and a better version of ourselves. Some thoughts that come to mind as i look at this painting: The mind of the artist is the god of its creation. Adam was created by God through the mind of Michelangelo. The artist brings his imagination to life. God is an artist and Adam is his masterpiece.
What a unique take. I’d never considered it before, but you almost have me convinced now. I almost feel like the relaxed state of Adam with the blank stare into nothingness, vs and the dynamic depiction of God, represents Adam in thought about why he is here on this earth. Reaching for the stars, contemplating what it means to live. To that note it brings life as to why their fingers are not making contact. Adam is reaching for something he can not physically touch, but God (something only Adam can see in his mind) is a contemplative thought reaching out towards Adam.
Michelangelo also heavily disagreed with the church in his personal writings. There’s a lot of history supporting the theory that this piece was a middle finger to the church. Very clever man!
This is why it’s important that the discussion surrounding the interpretation of art must move beyond merely the artist’s intent and into what the art tells us about the artist, about its origins, about the world, about ourselves. We begin by asking what the creator means with their creation and proceed to wonder what the creation say about the creator. And that encompasses the interpreter as well. A perfect work of art to illustrate this.
As a catholic I'll have to disagree with this interpratation hahaha Though the interpratation of a man creating a painting which represents the creation of himself, created by God, brings my attention. Once I heard a thought of Tolkien, I don't remember how it exactly went, but was in the lines of: if we were created by a creator God, by his own image, then we would be creators as well, in the sense of creating art. And being an aspiring artist this motivates me so much, knowing that making art is an aspect of Our Lord we all carry.

i really like the second interpretation it took me off guard at the beginning because i thought about it while also thinking about my religion but the moment i thought of it in a more philosophical way it made me thunk about how even if the painting shows what seems to be god and what seems to be adam it doesn't have to have a religious meaning or interpretation ,,, i dont know that just made me feel a lot more free for some reason haha

Watching this, I sort of came up with my own interpretation, where the figure on the left is actually God, and the figures on the right are Adam and Eve and their descendants.

Man on the other hands, needs salvation, and hence is trying their best to touch God, similar to the story of the woman who was healed by just touching Jesus. But of course this isn't a mainstream interpretation, and it's probably wrong.
As a devout Christian/Catholic, Michelangelo probably wouldn't flip the role of the creator and created, but it's an interesting twist. God the Father, in the Judeo-Christian tradition, is a pure spirit, without a physical body. So the standard Christian understanding of humans, being "made in the image of God" is chiefly in human's soul/spirit, not so much the physicality like shape, size or color. God endowed human beings above all other animals with rational eternal souls, similar to His own. The two most important powers of this "spiritual/soul image" that humans get from God is the will and the intellect. Free will to choose love and intellect to know. A human being who know and love God, a human being who know and love his neighbors, fulfill the very purpose of which he was created for. The Judeo-Christian anthropology transcends race, genders, social-economic status of human beings. It gives humans inherent dignity, value and rights simply because he/she is God's most beloved creations, carrying God's very soul. This world view is beautiful and good for human flourishing. About the “god was the creation” interpretation, I noticed something: Say you just completed an art piece, just like Michelangelo. When you’re done, what do you do? You step back, look up at it, and relax for a moment, happy that the work is done, exactly like what Adam is doing in the painting. I, like some others here, think the second interpretation leaves even more room for interpretation with the idea that both were created as a projection of Michelangelo. I think that’s kind of like the Gnostic idea of a divine spark being in each of us. Kind of a mirror of Merkabah mysticism, and how God’s throne lies at the end of a labyrinth within our own psyche. Maybe that lends credence to both interpretations being correct at some level. Creations, yet at some level, manifestations of God. God is, after all, described as transcendent AND eminent. Maybe we each experience that little God voice in our heads a bit differently. Maybe that’s why faith is a personal journey🙂
Amazing. I have always kept a distance from this painting because of my beliefs. I thought that nobody would interpret it as I did just because of the symbolism of the piece (yes, I'm that egocentric, lol). But today I decided to look it up. To me, the meaning of the painting has always been the latter. How else could we explain the strong connection to the thought that God is only in our minds? Those angels surrounding him could be those pushing religion as an agenda, in very simple terms. It's truely comforting when I find my observations to be on the right path. I think I'm going to like this channel.

As myself being a Christian I have to say that though I disagree it still is a very interesting thought that I am a little suprised by(not rly bc I've heard of this idea bf) but I did like when you said that it can impact even people outside the Christian world and that hypothesis can rise from this work. Though in Christian theology God doesn't have gender nor a skin color when talking about the Father I found your idea interesting about what you said. Though Adam probably would've been a tanned person that God in a more "accurate" work would be tanned also since they are in the middle east where the people lived back then or Africa rather somewhat. As a Christian in the 21rst century, I think an argument could be made that both interpretations can be true, that neither interpretation cancels the other out. There are so many Christians in these comments being very narrow-minded about the second interpretation, as if the very idea and thought exercise is harmful in some way. It's refreshing to see someone who is secure enough in their faith to explore the idea. I agree with you, both interpretations can be true at the same time, a kind of symbiotic relationship between God and humanity. The point of presenting two different readings isn't to disprove one or the other, but rather to show that each view can reveal different ideas.
You mentioned, that the red bubble that surrounds God and the angels, might be the representation of a brain. But I think, there is another way to look at it. That red bubble, might also represent a womb, supporting the idea, that Adam created God, even more. So, the red bubble is a brain on one hand, implicating, that Adam imagined a God, and on the other hand, also a womb, implicating, that through Adam's imagination of God, God was created.

i've always thought that Adam is chilling, just there, not making effort to reach out. god, on the other hand, is fierce for the touch. Adam's relaxed posture always made me think that the holy being wasn't god, but Adam's life itself

This essay reminds me a lot of my favourite part of Dan Simmons' Hyperion, in which he reinterprets the myth of Abraham as Abraham testing God as much as the other way around. İt made a huge impression on me when I first read it.* *Spoiler alert but it goes like this: Abraham fully commits to killing his son because if God intervenes then He is a God of love and therefore worthy of Abraham's affection. İf God doesn't intervene then He isn't a God of love and thus is undeserving of worship.
This was definitely a very interesting interpretation. I've never sat down to intently think about any religious art works, so this was a full exercise 😅
First, I don't agree with making any carving or image representing anything in heaven or not in heaven. Because 1) God says not to do it 2) It makes people interpret it as a reflection of THE truth. An example is this picture, where many philosophers and scholars had tried to analyze this depiction of God (which is untrue) and make assumptions about who God is and what He is as if this is an irrefutable picture of God that exactly depicts God and all that He is. As is mentioned in this video, this is a modern way of thinking about how maybe God is an idea we came up with at some point in time and Michelangelo didn't hold this view. This is just a great painting he did, inspired by something he deeply believed in and wanted to depict. (Again, I disagree with doing so and God also specifically commands not to do so.)
Hi, when you talked about that 2nd modern idea of comprehension of "THe creation of Adam" I got an illumination. AND THIS 2ND IDEA SEEMS TOTALLY CORRECT to me. As a non christian man (in my opinion) this could be totally possible because in the religion is said that God created us, but as WE created the religion, soWE CREATED GOD TO OUR IMAGE as you indirectly said. Michelangelo was a known pagan and hid little nods toward the Christians saying "this is what I think of your faith." So, God being Adam's creation is an interesting interpretation that could very well be correct.

I think another interesting way of looking at the 2 men in the painting would be not as separate people but rather as one person at different times/ages. The youthful Adam looks as though he is "limp" yet he has all the optimal physical attributes of a strong young man, meaning he has all the tools to be active, make use of his gifts and shape his future, yet for what reason? The reason may be the life he sees ahead of himself as now an older man but with a beautiful woman surrounded by many (possibly his own) children, which would fit into the traditional idea of the masculine dream. While he may feel tired to work towards this dream and can only reach out with seemingly low effort, his future is reaching for him in an active or, as used in this video, "dynamic" manner since it is what he(a man) is destined to become. To me this idea is plausible and at the least consistent in itself in addition to fitting into the idea of the masculine journey in both modern and ancient times. As a final note: What is there to "create" other than your very own future?
I always thought that it was Adam, not God, who looked more comfortable in the painting. God, to me, is the one struggling to reach Adam, almost scaping from the creatures around him, and extending his finger, similar to the gesture of a newborn baby who reaches to the warm of their parents, to touch the slightly open hand of Adam, which appears more dominant. It´s also Adam´s hand position the element that strikes to me the most in this analysis, since although God is indeed a little bit more elevated in the painting, it is Adam´s hand, in contrast to his position, the one slightly upwards, dominanting God´s hand. But hey, I agree that this is a much more modern take on the painting, but I still appreciate the new perspective. Thanks!

The positions of their fingers give me the feeling that God is active, pointing towards Adam to give him life, while Adam's hand is passive, receiving it. The words at (4:30) are from Michelangelo??? Where did he write it? Is it a book?

At first I was quite surprised by the thumbnail of the video which says “what if God is the creation of Adam” however, as I continue to watch, it surely does make sense of how God can or possibly be the creation of Adam. Especially, at the latter part of the video.

However, I love renaissance paintings and the thought of God being in a human brain, which the church very much disagrees with, makes me want it even more now. Thank you for this wonderful insight.

Even if we assume that our universe MUST have been created by some kind of sentient being, there are thousands of other religions. What makes yours more correct? When the universe was created there were an equal amount of matter and anti matter, they were formed in pairs. Matter and anti matter when together annihilate each other to leave only the purest of energy. If that was the case our universe would have been just energy. But every one in billion chances matter would survive the annilation and that matter is what that made our current universe. We seen bodies made of matter but not anti matter. The amount of anti matter is very low compared to matter in our universe. If everything was truly stable, nothing would've existed.
I looked at Michelangelo painting exactly as this: Adam is the creation of God in his image. God is surrounded by his angels who could be seen as displeased with Gods attempt to reach out to Adam. It also seems like they are kind of holding him back from Adam. The angels are not happy or may be hesitant that god would reach out to Adam in fear that he may love Adam more than his angels who loyally serve God. Also, the veil is shaped like a brain. Humans have complex thoughts and emotions that play key roles in our decision making. Logic, intuition, and emotions are a few of many as we make decisions. It almost like the angels are the fear/jealous/ hesitant emotion we feel and God is the fearless/irrational/impulsive emotion(could be seen differently but I can’t think of the words right now lol). So, I believe that God is making a decision to reach out to Adam despite his angels disagreeing. I think Michelangelo tried to interpret that God did create mankind in his image. Humans have free will, so does God. I feel like this painting would also make more sense this way as well given that it was painted after biblical times. So, humans were born to Sin. I think this painting is a reminder of what God has done for us despite not having full support from his angels and furthermore painting the story that we are a reflection of God.

Very interesting how anatomy and dissection as first occurred during around 14th and became a normality by the 16th century in the study anatomy. "The creation of adam" really captures this with its attempts at anatomical preciseness of the figures and the "brain" behind god. Great vid!

How many times do people in the world say, “If you want to change your situation, you need to change your thinking.” Very True. We must change our thinking to faith in ABBA Father, the Word of God Made Flesh, and the Holy Ghost. What People miss is that Ford references “his mistake,” before referencing the Painting. If you look at the Painting God is higher than Adam, like the Creator’s thoughts being higher than our own. (Isaiah 55:8-9). Adam’s mistake was being tricked by the serpent to eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil, to make one wise to be equal to God, however once he did so Adam was separated from God because God cannot Dewell with sin and a sinful mind. (Genesis 3:4-24) (Romans 8:7). Notice that the way Adam’s hand in the painting is with his palm down and God’s palm is down as they try to come together. Adam’s palm down demonstrates that he is not submitting to God as the Creator, but has made himself equal to God. (Planet of the Apes, and their handshake) Because of this Adam is separated from God. In scientific terms Adam has Brain Cancer (Sinful Mind) in his lowered state, because without God WE are nothing and can do nothing. (St. John 15:4-5)(1 Corinthians 1:21, “the world by wisdom knew not God”). Look at King Solomon with all his worldly wisdom. (Ecclesiastes 1:17-18)(“this also is vexation of spirit”).
From the title alone without even watching the whole video this is what kind of popped up from my head. Adam unable to explained how the world works to his wife and children made a pretext that there is a higher being out there and so forth it expanded and exaggerated the concept of god from generations upon generations of adam’s lineage until someone weaponized it
Back when I was young and "Total Recall" came out, I was frustrated with the end because, though it suggested that the whole story might have happened in the mind of the protagonist, it didn't state it explicitly. It was only when I was older (having forgotten the movie entirely for years) that I realized this ambiguity was entirely purposeful, and by far a better ending, and meaning, than one or the other decisive answer. The same is true for Inception, where the ambiguity of the ending is the point. I think here with the Chapel, it's interesting that God and Adam are situated dead center. The progress in theory begins on one end and centers on the creation of Adam, but looking at it differently, it becomes a mandala, where the creation of God progresses backward in time, radiating out from the center. This is the nature of thought and memory, which generates from the ever-shifting now, both forward as planning and conjecture, and backward as memory. Memory, if you will, is our time travel, showing us the shape of that which no longer exists, and perhaps never existed. Even from a non-religious point of view, the creation of God could also be seen as the creation of man. Arguably, humanity is defined by our quest to understand the universe and what makes it tick. This quest ultimately becomes cyclical, bringing us back to ourselves, like a mobius strip or a mandala, radiating out from the self into the past, the future, and throughout the universe as we perceive it, and then back to our own brain, which is all we have to understand any of it. It's all happening in there, after all. And yet, the most comforting notion in the world, at least to me, is that when my brain stops working and turns to worm food, the universe, or God, if you will, goes on. If there is such a thing as immortality, it exists in the entirely conjectural place where the self and the universe cross over, right there in the center of the image. The place where Humanity creates God, while at the same instant, God creates humanity. The mystery of existence, if there is such a thing, that both are happening at the same time, at all times. Or maybe I'm reading way to much into it.

Late but I think this perspective is interesting even if you don’t take it as “humanity made up religion”. Faith is by nature believing in something without concrete proof and our minds fill in the infinite gap. It’s all about perspective on how we perceive God

Since a kid I seen this as an equal exchange between the two beings. Makes sense because people today compared to early on less people pray and worship as I have personally seen which could explain why you don't see what was told in stories from centuries ago like Jesus or God coming down and commanding armies and such. Like some gods are thought to need prayer to survive while others don't. I personally think God can live without prayer but perhaps he doesn't have as much energy or motivation as he once has due to less people being a daily devoted to him, maybe God came from a battle against something so he created Adam or evolved him and made a pact with him. I give you live, security, happiness, and you give me your extra life force, your energy, your love so I can keep the earth happy and healthy and help protect against outer forces. Aka other beings we can't even think of. The 13th Disciple wrote a story about how he knew what Jesus really was what he really was a king of. How Jesus tried to shut him up so havoc wouldn't unleash. Especially since then the human mind was more fragile and easier to inrage. We probably will never know what life was like before us the same will be said 1,000 years later by who or what is here after us. They will probably think we were so advanced civilization (more then we already are at this point) or so barbarians who barely had an idea on how to manage this planet or...they might think we never existed at all maybe just another species of monkey. Or our existence will be completely gone forever. We will never know. Those above will always know more than those below and they like to keep it that way. That's true for everything and everywhere. All in all I see it as an equal exchange. You see how it seems like less and less people devote their live to God and now more horrendous scenes are happening as time goes on to me it makes sense. No God probably could just wipe us out one day and make a new better project.. he's done it before right? Or maybe that was some other being? Remember God has killed other beings in order to justify his omnipotence and our security and well being. So why couldn't he do the same to us? I think he can and probably will. But that promise? Maybe that's what the rapture is..keeping the promise. If we ruin the planet so far that the demons rise in physical form hell take the ones that have kept the promise to him to his safety and leave those who broke it to literally rot in hell and the burn earth to then erase it all make anew and make a new promise or equal value.
It may come as a weak point of view, but I think it's possible he intended both interpretations. Even though the Renaissance had a strong Catholic presence, they still had a Roman (and therefore Greek) influence. Religious syncretism, especially in those days was something that was surely discusses at length. When the wine was flowing and Michelangelo and his friends were discussing art, poetry, philosophy and more, it's easy to see him coming to the conclusion that religion may be a creation of man. Does that mean it's blasphemy? Of course not. If an omnipotent God exists, there's no way he would be offended by mortal musings. Does that mean Michelangelo was a secret atheist? No. I'm sure he intended the painting to represent strongly both views. That's the tension that has kept this fresco as iconic as it is. It plays both sides. It seems unfair, and to the western mindset it surely is. But that's what makes it interesting.

I will say, the use of the word “myth” can be offensive due to the fact that the word itself means false or untrue whereas those stories to many are truth.
The word carried connotations of something being untrue or at the very least and exaggeration of truth but I don't think the base word actually means that. Mythology without those connotations simply refers to the shared religious storyline of a culture or multiple cultures.
It's practically impossible for the second interpretation to be true. Why? Because Michelangelo was drawing from his imagination of what it was like to create Adam. Michelangelo is not a witness to the creation. Hence, the presence of, say, a belly button does not hold any indication of Adam having a mother or not. In my understanding, the picture in itself is "SYMBOLIC" and that of a mortal's imagination. Nice work on the channel. Regards.
I always felt that the creation of gods was a transition between the simple harvest of nature and the active innovating of nature that leads to our modern culture. Some might say it’s the formation of the bicameral brain in our species. For some reason we evolved from a “worship” of the earth mother towards a “worship” of gods in our own image. Fascinating. And now we find ourselves at a place where once again we must allow the earth mother back into our spiritual priorities. Truly fascinating!

An another way to look at it is to notice how Adam (representing all of mankind) barely reaches out to God, and leans on to the earth. Meanwhile God reaches out fully to reach Adam, because God loves us and wants to be with us but as humans with a sinful nature, we barely make an effort to reach for God and rather cling on to earthly things.

If he doesn’t then any interpretations oftentimes hold much less substance than the original message as one can only hope to understand what’s inside someone else’s head, the only clues being an author’s biography and background. If I take, say Norman Rockwell’s “Freedom of Speech” and say “Well, I see this as a poorly-clad worker standing up to the oppression of the well-dressed bourgeoisie as he’s the one who gets to speak over them”, that interpretation would sort of work, yet ludicrously disregard the original idea that everyone deserves equal freedom of speech; the social standing of men depicted was picked out by Rockwell for a whole another set of ideas, certainly not socialistic or revolutionary ones. How can one express his own ideas in a world where everyone interprets them in their own selfish, often self-serving ways?
The shape of the drapery resembling a brain could also be a representation of God as the mind which operates creation. This would also have interesting implications since it looks like God the father is spilling out of the drapery with all the other figures as if the representation of God is not really what God is, just how God chooses to represent himself to Adam.

Carl Jung wrote that there was another meaning behind the religion. That God was the mind, when you pray its really meditation, to remind you of everything good you have. That heaven and hell were 2 different states of mind irregardless of your situation you could live your life in either great ecstacy or great despair depending on the way you perceived the world. And that you could be an angel or devil depending on which of those states you influenced in those around you.

I think many people take the idea of Gods being man's creation as degrading or even blasphamous, but when you look at the issue as humans creating ideas that could unite them, inspire them, teach them, and lead them better than they could themselves than it is beautiful. Religions and governments are reflections of our common traditions and values made manifest in a form of scripture, law, or just common decency. Sometimes we hold onto traditions for far too long and that's when an outdated law or a religious dogma may start to become too restrictive - our values change with time and conditions after all.

in my subjective opinion i think the painting represents humanity and the relationship they have with god, that why their fingers aren't touching. god is reaching out arm fully extended trying to reach and touch Adam, but Adam's hand is relaxed and unextend, all Adam has to do is to put his finger up and he has touch god but in the painting he's choosing not to do so, not only to me does it represent creation but also free will. again it's my opinion Michelangelo if he was still around would probably debunk what I said, but he's not around it's up to use to decided what things mean to us.

There is an artwork by Damien Hirst that explores the an uncannily inverted concept of this painting by Michaelangelo entitled 'The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living'. Regardless of how you interpret it, who doesn't love a mystery at the end of a day? Perhaps even the notion of God (or the workings of our own mind) being elusive, fickle or slightly beyond our reach is also what's just as enduring about this. Wow I’ve never thought of this painting as Adam creating “God” but now it makes so much sense. With the idea of God being in the brain and almost a thought of Adam, I’m interpreting this picture as Adam reaching for a perfect ideal version of himself, his highest self, and that is the idea of God. It’s above him, just out of reach, and you can tell Adam doesn’t have full faith in himself, which is why he’s lazily reaching out. But God has full faith in him, which is why He’s reaching out so confidently and erect. I think it’s perfectly fitting of what we as humans deal with when we’re trying to become better people and a better version of ourselves. All the doubt that we deal with chasing our “highest” aspirations.

Some thoughts that come to mind as i look at this painting: The mind of the artist is the god of its creation. Adam was created by God through the mind of Michelangelo. The artist brings his imagination to life. God is an artist and Adam is his masterpiece.

What a unique take. I’d never considered it before, but you almost have me convinced now. I almost feel like the relaxed state of Adam with the blank stare into nothingness, vs and the dynamic depiction of God, represents Adam in thought about why he is here on this earth. Reaching for the stars, contemplating what it means to live. To that note it brings life as to why their fingers are not making contact. Adam is reaching for something he can not physically touch, but God (something only Adam can see in his mind) is a contemplative thought reaching out towards Adam.

The other side of his brain
This is why it’s important that the discussion surrounding the interpretation of art must move beyond merely the artist’s intent and into what the art tells us about the artist, about its origins, about the world, about ourselves. We begin by asking what the creator means with their creation and proceed to wonder what the creation say about the creator. And that encompasses the interpreter as well. A perfect work of art to illustrate this.

Though the interpratation of a man creating a painting which represents the creation of himself, created by God, brings my attention. Once I heard a thought of Tolkien, I don't remember how it exactly went, but was in the lines of: if we were created by a creator God, by his own image, then we would be creators as well, in the sense of creating art. And being an aspiring artist this motivates me so much, knowing that making art is an aspect of Our Lord we all carry.

i really like the second interpretation it took me off guard at the beginning because i thought about it while also thinking about my religion but the moment i thought of it in a more philosophical way it made me thunk about how even if the painting shows what seems to be god and what seems to be adam it doesn't have to have a religious meaning or interpretation ,,, i dont know that just made me feel a lot more free for some reason haha

Watching this, I sort of came up with my own interpretation, where the figure on the left is actually God, and the figures on the right are Adam and Eve and their descendants.
Yes and they could be reaching out for god to seek his forgiveness years after committing the sin but God isn't willing to forgive so he's holding back and looks unbothered
@@rishitamalhotra7564 I thought of it as God doesn't need to save humanity, but chooses to save out of compassion. Man on the other hands, needs salvation, and hence is trying their best to touch God, similar to the story of the woman who was healed by just touching Jesus.
But of course this isn't a mainstream interpretation, and it's probably wrong.

As a devout Christian/Catholic, Michelangelo probably wouldn't flip the role of the creator and created, but it's an interesting twist.
God the Father, in the Judeo-Christian tradition, is a pure spirit, without a physical body. So the standard Christian understanding of humans, being "made in the image of God" is chiefly in human's soul/spirit, not so much the physicality like shape, size or color. God endowed human beings above all other animals with rational eternal souls, similar to His own.
The two most important powers of this "spiritual/soul image" that humans get from God is the will and the intellect. Free will to choose love and intellect to know. A human being who know and love God, a human being who know and love his neighbors, fulfill the very purpose of which he was created for.
The Judeo-Christian anthropology transcends race, genders, social-economic status of human beings. It gives humans inherent dignity, value and rights simply because he/she is God's most beloved creations, carrying God's very soul. This world view is beautiful and good for human flourishing.

Say you just completed an art piece, just like Michelangelo. When you’re done, what do you do? You step back, look up at it, and relax for a moment, happy that the work is done, exactly like what Adam is doing in the painting.

I, like some others here, think the second interpretation leaves even more room for interpretation with the idea that both were created as a projection of Michelangelo. I think that’s kind of like the Gnostic idea of a divine spark being in each of us. Kind of a mirror of Merkabah mysticism, and how God’s throne lies at the end of a labyrinth within our own psyche. Maybe that lends credence to both interpretations being correct at some level. Creations, yet at some level, manifestations of God. God is, after all, described as transcendent AND eminent. Maybe we each experience that little God voice in our heads a bit differently. Maybe that’s why faith is a personal journey🙂

Amazing. I have always kept a distance from this painting because of my beliefs. I thought that nobody would interpret it as I did just because of the symbolism of the piece (yes, I'm that egocentric, lol). But today I decided to look it up. To me, the meaning of the painting has always been the latter. How else could we explain the strong connection to the thought that God is only in our minds? Those angels surrounding him could be those pushing religion as an agenda, in very simple terms. It's truely comforting when I find my observations to be on the right path. I think I'm going to like this channel.

As myself being a Christian I have to say that though I disagree it still is a very interesting thought that I am a little suprised by(not rly bc I've heard of this idea bf) but I did like when you said that it can impact even people outside the Christian world and that hypothesis can rise from this work. Though in Christian theology God doesn't have gender nor a skin color when talking about the Father I found your idea interesting about what you said.
Though Adam probably would've been a tanned person that God in a more "accurate" work would be tanned also since they are in the middle east where the people lived back then or Africa rather somewhat. I respect the fact that people might disagree with me but I either way enjoyed the video though it didn't convince me.

As a Christian in the 21rst century, I think an argument could be made that both interpretations can be true, that neither interpretation cancels the other out. After all, it should go without saying that what we ultimately believe about God unavoidably reveals what we believe about ourselves. Thanks for the insights, they are genuinely helpful.
There are so many Christians in these comments being very narrow-minded about the second interpretation, as if the very idea and thought exercise is harmful in some way. It's refreshing to see someone who is secure enough in their faith to explore the idea. I agree with you, both interpretations can be true at the same time, a kind of symbiotic relationship between God and humanity. The point of presenting two different readings isn't to disprove one or the other, but rather to show that each view can reveal different ideas.

You mentioned, that the red bubble that surrounds God and the angels, might be the representation of a brain.
But I think, there is another way to look at it. That red bubble, might also represent a womb, supporting the idea, that Adam created God, even more.
So, the red bubble is a brain on one hand, implicating, that Adam imagined a God, and on the other hand, also a womb, implicating, that through Adam's imagination of God, God was created.

i've always thought that Adam is chilling, just there, not making effort to reach out. god, on the other hand, is fierce for the touch. Adam's relaxed posture always made me think that the holy being wasn't god, but Adam's life itself

This essay reminds me a lot of my favourite part of Dan Simmons' Hyperion, in which he reinterprets the myth of Abraham as Abraham testing God as much as the other way around. İt made a huge impression on me when I first read it.*
*Spoiler alert but it goes like this:
Abraham fully commits to killing his son because if God intervenes then He is a God of love and therefore worthy of Abraham's affection. İf God doesn't intervene then He isn't a God of love and thus is undeserving of worship.

I love this new perspective a lot. It totally makes sense.
First, I don't agree with making any carving or image representing anything in heaven or not in heaven. Because 1) God says not to do it 2) It makes people interpret it as a reflection of THE truth.
An example is this picture, where many philosophers and scholars had tried to analyze this depiction of God (which is untrue) and make assumptions about who God is and what He is as if this is an irrefutable picture of God that exactly depicts God and all that He is.
As is mentioned in this video, this is a modern way of thinking about how maybe God is an idea we came up with at some point in time and Michelangelo didn't hold this view. This is just a great painting he did, inspired by something he deeply believed in and wanted to depict. (Again, I disagree with doing so and God also specifically commands not to do so.)
Hi, when you talked about that 2nd modern idea of comprehension of "THe creation of Adam" I got an illumination. AND THIS 2ND IDEA SEEMS TOTALLY CORRECT to me. As a non christian man (in my opinion) this could be totally possible because in the religion is said that God created us, but as WE created the religion, soWE CREATED GOD TO OUR IMAGE as you indirectly said. Michelangelo was a known pagan and hid little nods toward the Christians saying "this is what I think of your faith." So, God being Adam's creation is an interesting interpretation that could very well be correct.

I think another interesting way of looking at the 2 men in the painting would be not as separate people but rather as one person at different times/ages. The youthful Adam looks as though he is "limp" yet he has all the optimal physical attributes of a strong young man, meaning he has all the tools to be active, make use of his gifts and shape his future, yet for what reason? The reason may be the life he sees ahead of himself as now an older man but with a beautiful woman surrounded by many (possibly his own) children, which would fit into the traditional idea of the masculine dream. While he may feel tired to work towards this dream and can only reach out with seemingly low effort, his future is reaching for him in an active or, as used in this video, "dynamic" manner since it is what he(a man) is destined to become. To me this idea is plausible and at the least consistent in itself in addition to fitting into the idea of the masculine journey in both modern and ancient times. As a final note: What is there to "create" other than your very own future?
I always thought that it was Adam, not God, who looked more comfortable in the painting. God, to me, is the one struggling to reach Adam, almost scaping from the creatures around him, and extending his finger, similar to the gesture of a newborn baby who reaches to the warm of their parents, to touch the slightly open hand of Adam, which appears more dominant. It´s also Adam´s hand position the element that strikes to me the most in this analysis, since although God is indeed a little bit more elevated in the painting, it is Adam´s hand, in contrast to his position, the one slightly upwards, dominanting God´s hand.
But hey, I agree that this is a much more modern take on the painting, but I still appreciate the new perspective. Thanks!

At first I was quite surprised by the thumbnail of the video which says “what if God is the creation of Adam” however, as I continue to watch, it surely does make sense of how God can or possibly be the creation of Adam. Especially, at the latter part of the video.

Even if we assume that our universe MUST have been created by some kind of sentient being, there are thousands of other religions. What makes yours more correct? When the universe was created there were an equal amount of matter and anti matter, they were formed in pairs. Matter and anti matter when together annihilate each other to leave only the purest of energy. If that was the case our universe would have been just energy. But every one in billion chances matter would survive the annilation and that matter is what that made our current universe. We seen bodies made of matter but not anti matter. The amount of anti matter is very low compared to matter in our universe. If everything was truly stable, nothing would've existed.

I looked at Michelangelo painting exactly as this:
Adam is the creation of God in his image. God is surrounded by his angels who could be seen as displeased with Gods attempt to reach out to Adam. It also seems like they are kind of holding him back from Adam. The angels are not happy or may be hesitant that god would reach out to Adam in fear that he may love Adam more than his angels who loyally serve God. Also, the veil is shaped like a brain. Humans have complex thoughts and emotions that play key roles in our decision making. Logic, intuition, and emotions are a few of many as we make decisions. It almost like the angels are the fear/jealous/ hesitant emotion we feel and God is the fearless/irrational/impulsive emotion(could be seen differently but I can’t think of the words right now lol). So, I believe that God is making a decision to reach out to Adam despite his angels disagreeing.
I think Michelangelo tried to interpret that God did create mankind in his image. Humans have free will, so does God. I feel like this painting would also make more sense this way as well given that it was painted after biblical times. So, humans were born to Sin. I think this painting is a reminder of what God has done for us despite not having full support from his angels and furthermore painting the story that we are a reflection of God.

Very interesting how anatomy and dissection as first occurred during around 14th and became a normality by the 16th century in the study anatomy. "The creation of adam" really captures this with its attempts at anatomical preciseness of the figures and the "brain" behind god. Great vid!

How many times do people in the world say, “If you want to change your situation, you need to change your thinking.” Very True. We must change our thinking to faith in ABBA Father, the Word of God Made Flesh, and the Holy Ghost.
What People miss is that Ford references “his mistake,” before referencing the Painting. If you look at the Painting God is higher than Adam, like the Creator’s thoughts being higher than our own. (Isaiah 55:8-9). Adam’s mistake was being tricked by the serpent to eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil, to make one wise to be equal to God, however once he did so Adam was separated from God because God cannot Dewell with sin and a sinful mind. (Genesis 3:4-24) (Romans 8:7). Notice that the way Adam’s hand in the painting is with his palm down and God’s palm is down as they try to come together. Adam’s palm down demonstrates that he is not submitting to God as the Creator, but has made himself equal to God. (Planet of the Apes, and their handshake) Because of this Adam is separated from God. In scientific terms Adam has Brain Cancer (Sinful Mind) in his lowered state, because without God WE are nothing and can do nothing. (St. John 15:4-5)(1 Corinthians 1:21, “the world by wisdom knew not God”). Look at King Solomon with all his worldly wisdom. (Ecclesiastes 1:17-18)(“this also is vexation of spirit”).

From the title alone without even watching the whole video this is what kind of popped up from my head.
Adam unable to explained how the world works to his wife and children made a pretext that there is a higher being out there and so forth it expanded and exaggerated the concept of god from generations upon generations of adam’s lineage until someone weaponized it
I love the ideas presented, but it simply cannot be the case that Adam is creating God, since God is the active one, as you yourself pointed out.
Back when I was young and "Total Recall" came out, I was frustrated with the end because, though it suggested that the whole story might have happened in the mind of the protagonist, it didn't state it explicitly. It was only when I was older (having forgotten the movie entirely for years) that I realized this ambiguity was entirely purposeful, and by far a better ending, and meaning, than one or the other decisive answer. The same is true for Inception, where the ambiguity of the ending is the point.
I think here with the Chapel, it's interesting that God and Adam are situated dead center. The progress in theory begins on one end and centers on the creation of Adam, but looking at it differently, it becomes a mandala, where the creation of God progresses backward in time, radiating out from the center. This is the nature of thought and memory, which generates from the ever-shifting now, both forward as planning and conjecture, and backward as memory. Memory, if you will, is our time travel, showing us the shape of that which no longer exists, and perhaps never existed.
Even from a non-religious point of view, the creation of God could also be seen as the creation of man. Arguably, humanity is defined by our quest to understand the universe and what makes it tick. This quest ultimately becomes cyclical, bringing us back to ourselves, like a mobius strip or a mandala, radiating out from the self into the past, the future, and throughout the universe as we perceive it, and then back to our own brain, which is all we have to understand any of it. It's all happening in there, after all.
And yet, the most comforting notion in the world, at least to me, is that when my brain stops working and turns to worm food, the universe, or God, if you will, goes on. If there is such a thing as immortality, it exists in the entirely conjectural place where the self and the universe cross over, right there in the center of the image. The place where Humanity creates God, while at the same instant, God creates humanity. The mystery of existence, if there is such a thing, that both are happening at the same time, at all times.
Or maybe I'm reading way to much into it.

Late but I think this perspective is interesting even if you don’t take it as “humanity made up religion”. Faith is by nature believing in something without concrete proof and our minds fill in the infinite gap. It’s all about perspective on how we perceive God

I also saw the drapery as anatomical, but I saw it as representing the heart, god being in the heart of humanity, which could align with the first interpretation. I love the way this painting show multiple meanings, even if unintended, that applies especially with what we now know

Hahaha I might have to change the thumbnail then! The goal of this video is not to refute the existence of a god, but to show the wide range of possible interpretations (even opposite ones) that a masterpiece such as this one can inspire.

Since a kid I seen this as an equal exchange between the two beings. Makes sense because people today compared to early on less people pray and worship as I have personally seen which could explain why you don't see what was told in stories from centuries ago like Jesus or God coming down and commanding armies and such. Like some gods are thought to need prayer to survive while others don't. I personally think God can live without prayer but perhaps he doesn't have as much energy or motivation as he once has due to less people being a daily devoted to him, maybe God came from a battle against something so he created Adam or evolved him and made a pact with him. I give you live, security, happiness, and you give me your extra life force, your energy, your love so I can keep the earth happy and healthy and help protect against outer forces. Aka other beings we can't even think of. The 13th Disciple wrote a story about how he knew what Jesus really was what he really was a king of. How Jesus tried to shut him up so havoc wouldn't unleash. Especially since then the human mind was more fragile and easier to inrage. We probably will never know what life was like before us the same will be said 1,000 years later by who or what is here after us. They will probably think we were so advanced civilization (more then we already are at this point) or so barbarians who barely had an idea on how to manage this planet or...they might think we never existed at all maybe just another species of monkey. Or our existence will be completely gone forever. We will never know. Those above will always know more than those below and they like to keep it that way. That's true for everything and everywhere. All in all I see it as an equal exchange. You see how it seems like less and less people devote their live to God and now more horrendous scenes are happening as time goes on to me it makes sense. No God probably could just wipe us out one day and make a new better project.. he's done it before right? Or maybe that was some other being? Remember God has killed other beings in order to justify his omnipotence and our security and well being. So why couldn't he do the same to us? I think he can and probably will. But that promise? Maybe that's what the rapture is..keeping the promise. If we ruin the planet so far that the demons rise in physical form hell take the ones that have kept the promise to him to his safety and leave those who broke it to literally rot in hell and the burn earth to then erase it all make anew and make a new promise or equal value.
It may come as a weak point of view, but I think it's possible he intended both interpretations. Even though the Renaissance had a strong Catholic presence, they still had a Roman (and therefore Greek) influence.
Religious syncretism, especially in those days was something that was surely discusses at length. When the wine was flowing and Michelangelo and his friends were discussing art, poetry, philosophy and more, it's easy to see him coming to the conclusion that religion may be a creation of man.
Does that mean it's blasphemy? Of course not. If an omnipotent God exists, there's no way he would be offended by mortal musings.
Does that mean Michelangelo was a secret atheist? No. I'm sure he intended the painting to represent strongly both views. That's the tension that has kept this fresco as iconic as it is. It plays both sides. It seems unfair, and to the western mindset it surely is. But that's what makes it interesting.
You are projecting her e. Not only were atheist close to unheard of during these times {desist thinking was far more common} but there is no real reason for us to think that they weren't Christian. Vast majority of Greco-Roman thought wasn't atheist. It mostly talked about the divine

I will say, the use of the word “myth” can be offensive due to the fact that the word itself means false or untrue whereas those stories to many are truth.
The word carried connotations of something being untrue or at the very least and exaggeration of truth but I don't think the base word actually means that. Mythology without those connotations simply refers to the shared religious storyline of a culture or multiple cultures.
It's practically impossible for the second interpretation to be true. Why? Because Michelangelo was drawing from his imagination of what it was like to create Adam. Michelangelo is not a witness to the creation. Hence, the presence of, say, a belly button does not hold any indication of Adam having a mother or not. In my understanding, the picture in itself is "SYMBOLIC" and that of a mortal's imagination. Nice work on the channel. Regards.

I always felt that the creation of gods was a transition between the simple harvest of nature and the active innovating of nature that leads to our modern culture. Some might say it’s the formation of the bicameral brain in our species. For some reason we evolved from a “worship” of the earth mother towards a “worship” of gods in our own image. Fascinating. And now we find ourselves at a place where once again we must allow the earth mother back into our spiritual priorities. Truly fascinating!

Maybe Adam was aware of his own limitation that he created a version of a being that was boundless and omnipotent, like what human nature dictates, people imagine a more ideal version of things
