Mark, my good man. I've been doing this for years. Here's a tip for you. Invest in a "Dry-Erase" marker. Works just the same but wipes right off the ball and right off your club and probably right off your screen. Save your Sharpie for permanently marking your ball. Get a dry-erase as a "training aid".
One of the most simple yet effective tips I've seen! Applied this to my game and its helped dramatically. Used to struggle with my wrists flicking through through impact and caused fat, thins you name it. Also used to hook the ball terribly as I was firing my hips enough. This has got me hitting the ball first, and might I say "flushing it" with straighter ball flights. Also got a lot more distance. Great video Mark 👍
Hello Mark, thought you and this drill was insane, but I tried it in my garage mat and net. I never hit my irons and woods so pure. It really works, shock the hell out of me 😃 Thank you so much 🙏
Hi Mark. I am that guy with good strikes but thin. What strengthened my grip and now I can get my right hand into the shot and hit the ball more solidly with shaft lean. Thanks for the tip.
Absolutely brilliant, yet so simple in design. Can completely change your perspective regarding strike and the path to achieve that strike. I seldom watch vids anymore....but this is a keeper.
Mark … Great video! After watching your video, getting a Sharpie marker, and spending a few sessions at the (iron) range, my iron strikes are much, much better. I am hitting the ball higher, further, and (most importantly) much more consistently. The mental mindset is to hit the ball about half way up the club face … and voila! Before, I thinned the ball way too frequently; now, I hit the ball on the middle of the face almost all of the time!
Hi Mark, I have been working on this concept for the last 4 weeks. Strike has improved dramatically. I also used to struggle with a slide causing low ball flight. This drill has helped with rotation through impact and as such has increased launch angle. Great video!
It’s great to see you doing more in depth training on this concept. You’ve already taught us about de-lofting a bit. Playing with this concept at the range has transformed my game and my striking. These tips are pure gold!!! With my better strike I can now actually aim better. And that’s leads to actually thinking about where I want to hit the ball and where are my better misses. I’m able to play the game now!! There’s more enjoyment!! One thing leads to another. Thank you!!!
Thank you Mark so much. Your videos are some of the best and most informative on youtube. You go into great detail not only verbally but physically which makes a massive difference. Keep the vidoes coming as its helping me no end. Would love to see a video you rating best improvement irons for 2024, many videos about but id imagine you'd go into alot more depth than most others. 👍
I don’t know why but up until recently this was maybe my 6th favourite golf channel. I loved the leg straight video that was big help but THIS one is just…so simple and such amazing results. Took about 5 swings at the sim to get the feel and my 8 iron carry increased by 10m. Thanks a million Mark
I have a hard time reconciling the 'delofting' approach for irons vs letting the clubhead pass your hands. These seem like two opposites to me. I get that there's more than one way to square the clubface. And I do find that clubhead passing my hands works well when I just can't get rid of the slice/pushes. But it makes me wonder if I'm missing something with the lower half?
I have been doing this only in reverse to your method for the past year. I place a dot on each ball with a sharpie pen 5p coin size, I place each balls dot at the ideal strike area then swing, leaving a transfer onto my club. These are shag bag balls in my club practice area, dot really started as away to identify my balls during collection, but the transfers have been great! It also leave it quicker to swap clubs through my bag. I try to make this drill a monthly one to, using my R10 to record shot data and video my swing on every shot. Love watching and feeling a well flushed hit iron, just need to see more during club tournaments😳
Hi mark, Tommy fleetwood sets up with his lead arm in line with the club shaft on all clubs. This also helps to de loft the club. I don’t think a lot of amateurs know this fact with de lofting the club. If you get all other things right in your swing this makes a big difference in power. I never really noticed it until a yank did a video on Tommys swing and pointed his club position at address. This is a big reason why amateurs can’t play with bladed clubs. Very good video. All pga pros who teach, should point this out for those who have lessons.
Good one Mark! What would you say to someone who may be de-lofting too much? I was recently getting fit for new irons (moving from game improvement to players) as I wanted more spin and track man showed that my dynamic loft is very low. 6-iron attack angle of -3 and dynamic loft of 15-17 on a 31degree iron. Swing speed about 85 and ball speed around 125 and spin was 4500. Would love some ideas of how to get spin up.
I’m definitely one for adding loft! Will give this a go for sure. I’ve got a question about what sort of vertical launch we should be getting with certain clubs. Is there a cheat sheet or general rule of thumb for best launch angle. For example, my 7i is 27d static loft (strong af - thanks callaway 😂), but what should I be aiming for as a vertical launch angle with that? Is there a threshold to aim for for other clubs? Hopefully I’m making some sense 😂
Ok, as usual Mark a great fix and something that has been causing me issues out of the blue this past month. I have been using this "thought" and it has been working. Now the issue is I am holding on too long and not releasing. Any suggestions to combine this and a release "thought" to get best of both worlds ? Andrew Rice knows I take things to obsession with a fix and then he needs to fix the fix :-)
Just imagining the dot comfortably carried the greenside bunker I aim at when out with some practice balls - but I would say the biggest improvement was on those annoying 15-20 yard shove & run shots round the green with the PW or SW. Zero duffs and a much better grouping! Definitely worth another mention when out doing short-game work.
I have a variation on this marking. I mark my balls with a big black stripe. As well as an alignment aid on tee shots and putts, it helps with strike and low point control. With a 7 iron I want to see a mark on at least the 5th groove, preferably higher. Definitely not on the first groove and ideally not the second one either. So I can have a massive miss by 3 grooves and the ball will still be on the green. I will, though, note that my low point control was poor and figure out what i need to do better on the next shot.
Mark I often hit behind the ball even on mat.should I just keep moving ball back in stance until my contact is better?also the rotation of the Forearms and not just the Hands is an eye opener for me. thanks John
i've been 'scooping the ball a bunch but i am so good at it! i need a good thought to get rid of it but also i think maybe i m not moving towards the target enough at impact.
With soo much out there to watch and absorb - it is hard to make trips to the driving range feel productive. This is an awesome drill to try and it makes a lot of sense. I find I really lack to get different distances with my Irons!
This is crazy… CRAZY AWESOME!!! I never thought to put a dot at the top of my iron. I could definitely use this drill with my wedges when I’m hitting full-ish shots with them! I find a dramatic drop off in distance when I go from my iron shots versus hitting 100 yard shots. The gap is not only staggering, but confounding! Thank you Mark!!! I’m definitely gonna earmark some time for the range for this…
Hey Mark. would love a video on flyers! I have heard you before when testing "powerful", "game improvement" irons that you sometimes get a flyer which goes miles and that's why you wouldn't play them. I have Wilson C200 off the shelf for £200 from AG based on your review. But stop at a 7 iron then I also have a 7 icon Cobra RAD. I much prefer the Cobra and hit it better but probably 1 in 8 seem light flyers. I use Garmin and it averages 169 yards but it's gone over 200 lots and over 220 an this isn't just the ground conditions
The reason why so many struggle with iron strikes is this “de-lofting” concept. If you can hit your 9 iron cleanly, and you want more distance without changing your grip, swing or ball position, simply club-up 2-3 and choke up on the grip until your swing improves. It’s a total hack, I know. But, it really works.
great visual tip! Those of us of a certain age supinate the wrist at impact a la Ben Hogan, which definitely feels to me that it delofts the club - can I ask your thoughts on this?
I didn’t collect a mass amount of data on this, but wow do my strikes “feel” more solid when I try to “feel” like I’m striking the ball with the top of the club. Very interesting. Thanks for the tip. I’ll have to gather some data when the weather breaks.
i'm having trouble with slicing because my instructor says i'm trying to push at the ball too much trying to emulate something like this. How do you release but deloft at the same time?
Hey Mark I couldn’t help but think of the tour striker 7 iron training aid when I saw this video. Do you think it is the same concept? If so I’m gonna go dig it out and try using it again.
Please answer this. I'm a pretty good golfer, but I still haven't ever figured this out. Do I swing the club with both hands or do I swing with my lead arm. I transfer my weight, obviously but it seems like some players just pound it with both hands. When I do this I hit a lot of fat shots. I play better when I use my lead arm more, but as I've aged, I don't have any power.
Mark this is awesome and exactly what I need! The right amount of technical info but a clear objective that is easy to understand and makes sense. Nice one brah.
Hi Mark, any tips on how to manage this with wet winter lies? When I try to de-loft I feel I get a steeper angle of attack and present less bounce/more leading edge which in UK soft winter ground tends to lead me to dig!
Pretty much what the tour striker club is made for. It has an X on face of club that you visualize hitting the ball with the X. Great drill (And don't need the tour striker lol )
You don't need a marker, just use painters tape or other semi-adhering tape piece. If you just lightly push it on the club face it also tells you how good the strike was. I use two inch wide tape on my driver drills and it gives me instant feedback on strike position. And it does not ruin your whitewall :D
I honest to god think that before any person that tries to learn how to play golf, needs to watch a video on how the clubs are supposed to work. For years I had no idea why I would constantly chunk shots or hit them thin despite reading tips, drills etc.., "Keeps weight like this, turn your head like that, have your arms like this". If you can understand how the club is supposed to work, it makes trying to understand how to swing the club so much easier.
buddy of mine uses foot spray on his club face during practice. a thin coat turns white and leaves a very in-your-face clear ball mark on the club face. if you buy the right brand, it smells delightful too =)
HI MARK , I TRIED ANOTHER WAY SOMEONE TOLD ME ABOUT ON YOU TUBE , GET SOME SPRAY BUT I USED TALC ON RANGE THIS SHOWS SAME THING GOOD IDEA THOUGH . CAN YOU ENLIGHTEN ME ALSO . WHEN WE BUY A CLUB THERE IS THESE WHITE DOTS STICKERS ON THE CLUB , DO WE TAKE THEM OFF OR ARE WE ALLOWED TO PLAY WITH THEM ON .PAUL PAUL
Mark I need help. I have gone to coaches and struggling to find a fix. I don’t have a lot of money so I can’t go to someone like yourself with travel etc… I’ve been told my technique is pretty good. I get in good positions etc etc but I don’t clear my hips properly (typically clearing them too late). I’ve been told my practice swings are perfect and I try to replicate them but for some reason I don’t. How do I fix this?
I used to try to get students to get the top of the club onto the top dimple of the ball. It can’t be done, but it’s all in the trying. It’s hard to convince people to even attempt it.
Mark, do you feel that practicing on mats has helped to make this harder for us to do correctly? I feel like the mats promote the shallow strike and then people are adding loft to contact.

Thanks for clarifying this huge situation for most of golfdom. Excellent!
I dont normally comment but wanted to say this helped instantly, thank Mark! Can’t wait to see the wood and driver video.
Thanks for clarifying this huge situation for most of golfdom. Excellent!. Loving the new style videos Mark.Congrats..
Magnificent Mark! Thanks. Great drill! Never realized I was de-lofting my clubs.
Honestly, more people should know about you in the golf world. keep it up!
Thank you so much for these materials.

Great lesson. i worked this out a while ago a lot more consistent strikes something every mid-high h/c player needs to understand

Great drill, can you please do vid with woods and driver. Many Thanks
Will do

Hi Mark, love to see you going back doing what you are the best at!! Thank you for your great advice and simple explanation!
This has transformed my golf game I now have a dot on every iron absolutely simple and brilliant thanks
i've been 'scooping the ball a bunch but i am so good at it! i need a good thought to get rid of it but also i think maybe i m not moving towards the target enough at impact.
Good advice, thank you Mark!
You're welcome Erik
Ive managed to create a slightly bowed wrist from a cupped one , it works but i now have a problem with bunkers and lofted irons in to greens
Great tip, Mark! Sometimes I will use white powder on the face of the club to see the imprint of the ball. Thanks!
Like that

Your welcome
Awesome tips as always Mark!
Hi Mark. Great video as always. Any idea why we are allowed alignment marks in putters and drivers but not irons?
Good tips my man. What's your sim setup?
Hey Mark. would love a video on flyers! great visual tip! Those of us of a certain age supinate the wrist at impact a la Ben Hogan, which definitely feels to me that it delofts the club - can I ask your thoughts on this?
Mark- would you recommend this drill for wedges ?
Great tip …will try this tomorrow at the range
Mark, you're the man.
I didn’t collect a mass amount of data on this, but wow do my strikes “feel” more solid when I try to “feel” like I’m striking the ball with the top of the club.
Very interesting. Thanks for the tip. I’ll have to gather some data when the weather breaks.
Great vid Mark 👍👍👍
Great tip watching the video hope it works
That sounds exactly like me. Distance nowhere near as far as they should go. I will definitely be trying this!
Great Video! Thank you 🔥👏💪🫶
Mark, how tight should your grip be around the golf club?
i'm having trouble with slicing because my instructor says i'm trying to push at the ball too much trying to emulate something like this. How do you release but deloft at the same time?
Hey Mark I couldn’t help but think of the tour striker 7 iron training aid when I saw this video. Do you think it is the same concept? If so I’m gonna go dig it out and try using it again.
Totally is yes.
Please advise: How do I mark my club face and then see where the ball is meeting the face...
AT THE RANGE??
My swing thought with irons is ‘try and hit the top of the ball’ . It never actually happens but it gets me to strike ball then turf 🎉🎉🎉
Well done mark 👏 👍
Hops it helps
Anyone know the title of driver version of this video?
I am gonna try this the next time i play with my 5 iron. I really struggle with this club at the moment, barely hitting it any further than my 7 iron

I buy mine from foresight
Definitely wanting the driver contact drill video

Sure going to try it. That's my main problem with golf, hitting my irons. This isn't a very easy game to play.
I can imagine that this drill could help with transferring weight from back - lead foot in the down swing.
How can we incorporate this drill in driver?
Hi I use foot spray ,you can see exactly where the strike is.
Hitting down on the ball changed my life i was always trying to get under, it was a great epiphany
Love the way explain the golfswing man. Im a huge fan. Thanks Alot. Youre Welcome right? Lol.
Where can I get a sliver dot?
Did it mark the screen?
Where is that hoodie from Mark?? Me likes it!!
thx a lot🎉
Your welcome
Hi Mark, one of the best videos I’ve seen you do, fantastic! Can’t wait to get to range and try this👍
I used to try to get students to get the top of the club onto the top dimple of the ball. It can’t be done, but it’s all in the trying. It’s hard to convince people to even attempt it.
Just get a DST Club and practice shots with that 27 out of top 30 pros including Rahm use it …. It’s gotta work ??
The dot drill proved invaluable right off the bat. Wow, thanks.
Brilliant.
Took this to the course today. Imagined blue spot was there. Absolutely ripped my irons. What a top tip 👍🏻
That is great news.
Mark, do you feel that practicing on mats has helped to make this harder for us to do correctly? I feel like the mats promote the shallow strike and then people are adding loft to contact.
I see golfers struggle equally from both. 👍
I use a whiteboard marker pen, it simply wipes off.
Perfect.
Played for a long time and can’t hit anymore. Can’t be fixed and I’m starting to hate golf
How many balls are you hitting a week.
Sorry meant to say adding loft
How exactly do you find the “middle” of the club?
