I received some info overnight from Nik at Ceriatone about the Ceriatone Centaura that anyone watching this video might be interested in: Here goes: From Nik at Ceriatone Great video! I dig it! :) I am glad you like the pedal! Indeed, we do it slightly differently, don't want people's investments to lose value! :) But yes, we use pretty much similar components. Those capacitors are actual Panasonic ECQ film caps (obsolete), and the electrolytics are Panasonic M series. Same as original. The diodes are 1N34A, made by Sylvania in the USA (60s or 70s). The originals use a different brand of 1N34A. For the pots, the particular Switchcraft type used in the original is not available anymore, but can be custom ordered (we did check with the company). But the cost, quantity, and more importantly, the wait time, made it not feasible. And of course, we do not goop the PCB, so repairs can be done easily, vs original (degooping the PCB usually will destroy things). Great video! Yours seems to be number 6008 (yes, we have sold nearly 7000 units to date). Cool serial #, the Chinese would deem that number lucky! So thanks Nik for that great insight in to the components etc. which I certainly was not aware of.
I appreciate Nick saying that he didn't want to make it exactly alike so that the people who invested all that money on the original don't lose their investment. But the reality is Gibson is making 59 reissues all the time and people are continuing to buy The Originals at incredibly high prices. So you should just go ahead and make it as close as possible as far as I can see it's not going to cause people to lose their investment in the original klon pedal
Sorry to hear that. My first videos on my channel covered the making of the Ceriatone HRM... it was not an easy project for sure and was actually the first amp I ever made. I had that amp for at least 10 years.... in any case thanks for the info...
Hi Tony, there's been a Klon Centaur on Reverb for £10000 or $10000 can't remember exactly, so I bought two of them. Then I woke up and it was all a dream...the price previously mentioned wasn't a dream though...As regards the KOT, I'm into 5yrs and 3 months waiting and counting...
:) They are close for sure... and my guess is that while there might be a slight difference its probably unlikely that many guys could categorically pin down the difference (maybe a lucky guess) between these two... hence the video. Thanks and answer later...
Device B has been recorded slightly louder than Device A -which makes it more difficult to compare. However, regardless of which unit is which, I still prefer the tone of the first one (Device A), as it seems slightly more scooped and with less prominent mids than Device B.
It is slightly louder I agree - at the time it seemed about the same and the knobs were in exactly the same position too. Maybe one board IS louder when the knobs are the same? or maybe the knobs are fitted differently (could be anything I guess). Thanks for the post of which... and the answer will be posted later on here somewhere...
Device A seemed a trifle smoother and refined; while Device B seemed to have slightly more output/volume, which projected a trifle woollier and raspier effect.

I'm not sure I can go to the USA at the moment? But I will be coming back there for sure... its a wonderful place and I always love the visits. I have not been to Tennessee though as my reasons for visits are numerous and not yet taken me there... but you never know. Yes stay safe there too - and thanks for the run down on your pedal which helps as I don't own one of the Chinese ones myself.
Ha brilliant word! You deserved the heart for that one. B was slightly louder (but the controls were correctly the same) than A for sure. so does A have a name?
Hello old friend I was looking for a review of this pedal due to its variety of clones, I wanted to know what would be the closest to the original klon and of course you have made it clear to me, above you do what we talked about last time. You explain and compare very well the types of electronic components between the two and thanks to you I will buy the clone of the klon hehehe.

It might be correct or not! Great that you have two to compare too... and they are harder to tell without a picture of the one being used. Ceriatone have made very good amps for years and I have had a few (I must get another one of these days) with good quality there's little to not like really. I'll be posting the real answer later and get the champagne or the Bud out depending on your answer :) Thanks for watching - great comments....

My Ceriatone Centaur came in a Ceriatone printed box with nice, form fitting inserts, instructions and power adapting cable. But I was one of the early buyers so things may have changed.
Thanks for that info. The brown box you see on the video on the table at the back has everything but no printing on the box... Thanks for the info... AND can you tell which is which from this video? A good question for an owner of one of them - the answer is coming later when I'll tell which is which on here.
Thanks Tony, it was a matter of time really. No self respecting Guitar enthusiast should be without a Klon or an equivalent. Mine's real/ original,, I got it from Finnegan himself back in the day. I sent off to the US for it. It unnerves me that they sell for so much. I have the gold Centaur. Another superb deep dive. Pity the gubings are gunked.
Well bought at the time! I did pay more for mine, but they continued up more so I'm not really worried :) - I also checked out the real Klon that I own and the smaller later one which I still have too here: ruclips.net/video/KVPDBi8H-1s/видео.html thanks for watching.
Yes I like them too. I like Nik too as he is always a very nice guy to communicate with no matter what any problem. I was building a Ceriatone in 2009 and he helped me with a couple of small errors. It was great support. Thanks.
This was a great video if I had the money I would buy the klon but then I would never use it because of the value the ceritone is one you could play and beat around and not worry about it . The ceritone is very good I’d say they nailed it Tony.
I did set the two as near as possible at the time of the recording and there was a slight volume difference I agree. So which is the Ceriatone... the answer is a bit ambiguous ... and thanks for watching.
Thanks for the usual forensic examination Tony! I have a Ceriatone (SN 2790) and a RYRA. Both sound great, and similar... I haven't got an original Klon but I suspected Nik Azam's manual pamphlet was a dead ringer for the original! Interesting to see him chiming in below! The Ceriatone is pronounced Che + ree-ia + tone I understand. I think A is Ceriatone. What's the answer?
Great to know you have 'got your hands dirty' as I have :) I ALWAYS say that name wrong also - thanks for the help but I am beyond that with this Ceriatone name. Answer later today..
I have a Ceriatone Centaura and I use it as an always on pedal. You need to dial in the sweet spot for the tone you desire the most, however it does have a slight midrange thing going on but in a good way. I've also got the Ceriatone Horsebreaker and I haven't yet worked out which one is better however if you do a blind test, they are impossible to pick the difference. I think if you are a muso who who wants to pretend to have an original Klon on your board but hasnt got the money to splash, you can't go wrong buying the Centaura,it will do the same thing.
Great info Chris and thanks for posting that - it will help many. I have not tried the Horsebreaker but good to know about. The Ceriatone really is one of the better 'clones' I think and how they got the case down to perfection was a real art. Ha the problem with the real Klon Centaur is that it might last ten minutes until someone steals it! I do have one but ha its not for playing often... the Ceriatone is perfect for most other stuff. Thanks for your post really good and thanks for watching.
I had Centura while it looks close to original. Best sounding clone was Decibelics. One person I know had original Klon and Decibelics and sold Klon when price was going higher since they sounded the same f2f.
HI Tony. Can't tell which is which. B sounded louder and with a bit more bite but I wouldn't know if pot settings/value/sources of the two pedals vary. I've heard people say that with Klon you need to crank the gain up to get the best out of it, unlike a TS which can gve you a great boost with just a bit of gain. I've never played a real Klon so I don't know myself.
Robin... A is the Ceriatone and B is the original Klon. I do think there was a small variance of the pot positions (even though they looked the same settings). If I used the Klon with a JCM800 or something similar I think it can add just some more of what makes an amp sound 'and feel' really good when you're playing through that setup. So I do think the amp in question whatever it is has a big part to play re a Klon pedal and it's settings to get particular results. But there was no doubt that the Ceriatone was near sounding.
I have no idea which one is the real deal but B was just a little bit brighter than A….They both sounded good… Plus the sounds will change depending on the amp and guitar combination
It is hard to tell... there's no real reference of anything. Like I said in the video - most guys have a view, but whether its right or wrong is what matters... answer later :)
It IS hard to tell, and so many guys choose A and so many choose B. All will be revealed later... and there is a difference between the tones. Thanks for your answer and watching too...
Well at least you tried! I have to say that without the images it is hard to determine. The truth is though that each pedal (no matter how it sounds) is aimed today at different markets I think. The two only ever meet in a video like this :). Thanks for watching and the answer will be posted later...
Thanks for posting and it shows that there is a small difference - but as to which is which... I'll be posting that answer later... and thanks for your efforts...
Mate if you haven't tried a Strymon Cloudburst then i recommend you do. Tony they are the Dogs Ballards. When you play it's like a whole ensemble of Orchestral instruments backing you. How the Hell they've done it beats me but their amazingly good fun. I'm a Blues and Jazz player though but i'm sure it would be great with the heavier stuff. Please at least have a gander.
That's a genuine answer... I noticed that too but other than that, different guys hear different things and it's a bit hard to tell exactly which is which I think from these sort of tests. Thanks for watching and the answer will be revealed later...
Just been working on new camera and pro quality audio... my very last review (Halon tremolo gold) shows some of the improvement of the audio and video. Thanks.
Very similar sounding.I’d say b was the original Klon because of it being that bit noisier.Ceriatone do make fabulous amps I’ve got one of their dizzy 30’s a fabulous sounding amp!
Drat :) I do think that although the controls were set the same (to look at) that maybe the Klon for the same settings was slightly higher... but they are both pretty near each other and I think the Ceriatone is a pretty good deal. Thanks for participating.
I liked B a lot more, it sounded more ballsy, open, defined and dynamic, not as flat. My guess is that that's the Klon, and if it's the Ceriatone, it puts the Klon to shame.
Well I'm not quite telling yet, but I will. I have to say that the Klon could be either, and so could the Ceriatone... thanks... and we'll see later...
Well sound or tone is a subjective thing for sure... just look at the answers on here... its a 6 of one or half a dozen of the other... They do sound very similar I agree with you. Answer will be later just FYI... and thanks for watching Chris.
So for the idea that it’s close… often times in the highest level of sports competition, the difference between first and say last is merely 5% or less in difference… what we pay for is that small, incremental “improvement”in performance
Not guessing which is which, as I don't know how the Centuar is supposed to sound. But B seemed a bit more noisy, but it had a better bottom end in my estimation. (Fuller sound, to put it simply). If I had to pick one unit, I preferred, I'd pick B but I'd run it through a Noise Gate first!!!😉 You'll have to understand I'm listening through my television, via my phone. So yhat could have a bit to do with my perception.(My ears have been blown since 1971, didn't get any better working in the aircraft factories I worked in. Like a war zone!)
Chicken :) Well you sort of guessed an answer :) Whether its right or wrong really does not matter (but I will be posting the answer later). Harder through the TV. But it does show overall how near these two pedals actually are. While I was not entirely surprised, when I listened to the two there is not really that much difference except slight volume and fuller sound as you say. Interesting stuff though :). And thanks for watching and posting your opinion... the answer will be coming a bit later...
Well it is subjective. I thought exactly that, then sat down with it in front of a JC800 (original), a Les Paul and a well known USA dealer and I bought it within 5 mins! I do think it's a hands on thing, but the Ceriatone is a really great pedal also and so near...
It is hard to tell. If I had put the pictures then everyone would have said 'I knew that' but in reality it is harder to choose without them and each pedal stands on its own merits. Answer coming later and thanks for watching.
I mean, am I the only one here who hears how loose the bottom end is in the B? That’s what I always listen for in these boost pedals and the A seems nice and tight. If B is the real Klon, I can cross that off my bucket list!
Ha - come on now... no breaking out of the ranks :) but I get that... thing is you watched it and hopefully it was useful to you and that's all that matters! :)
If the circuit is the same, and the soldering quality is the same, the only reason they wouldn't sound the same is the components aren't exactly the same. If they ARE exactly the same. they WILL sound the same.
But... these are worth $250 and the others are worth $(put your figure here) so there is more to it than just the sum of the parts :) - a very good comment... and thanks for watching.
Hmm, maybe it would have been a better comparison with the boost off, I don’t know maybe not lol. All I know is I bought mine cheap on wish he! He!🕊🏴❤️
Well I just plugged in to the SC20 (JCM800 tones) and set the knobs the same and played each. I remember when I bought the real deal that was roughly how the amp was set at the time and it did sound good. As to whether this is right on the distortion level is subjective, but at least they were both the same which I think is critical in choosing the pedal. So no choice? Don't be chicken :) and thanks for watching and posting...
@@tonymckenzieofficial I always watch your postings my friend, you better buy some more ammo the injuns (variant) are comming.😂😂😂 p.s. Nick’s info was cool, stay safe buddy.🕊🏴❤️
Looks like your original Centaur was sold for the Japanese market. Human Gear was their Japanese distributor. Still yeah, that sticker isn't in Chinese 😄
Pfft...no clue man. Sound close enough for me that I'd be willing to save $4750 (or £4750) an get the Ceratone. Beautiful Gibson by the way! Someday I'll own one...maybe
Yes the Ceriatone is close IMO - there is a difference of course, but I did also cover the logics of that in the video. When you got the Ceriatone... you could use the balance for the Gibson :) that makes sense... and I'm sure many might opt for that choice. I bought the Les Paul Custom some years ago before too much of those times had lower quality and I did in fact review the guitar here: ruclips.net/video/8-f8E9W78oA/видео.html you might like to see that. Thanks and watch for the answer later on here.
@@tonymckenzieofficial i don't know what $3000 (or £3000 or €3000) looks like. To be honest I would blame luck on the current set up I have. I will go homeless and live alone in the woods before I give up my Mesa Mark IV or Schecter guitars (always makes me wonder why those turds put EMG pickups in a really nice guitar, thank God I am half way decent with a soldering iron). Super cool pedal man
To be clear I am not complaining at all. There are rich people an poor people here an there with this or that. I'm pretty stoked to own a set up well out of my budget and super happy with it. Its enough for me to watch RUclips vids of other peoples gear. I don't need to own everything. Love your vids man
I agree... the cost of the real deal is frankly outrageous. Hence I bought the Ceriatone... :) My klon cost far less than these days... The MK IV is a brilliant amp and I owned one for a number of years... one of the best IMO!
Scarily I own both. We have varying opinions based on many different things. I like Ceriatone and have bought other equipment from them over the years and like the people there too. However, its a bit like a Rolls Royce and it's (Chinese) rip off counterpart - the 'Rills Rills' (yes really)... and while they resemble each other and each maker will tell you my story or your story, of course a 'Rills Rills' will NEVER be a Rolls Royce. Thanks.
No, they are not the same. The real silver klon sounds better than the silver centura in my experience. The real gold klon is the tastiest sounding above all. There’s something about the breakup that no other copies can duplicate.
Not the same. The components are different so how can they be the same? The Centaura (silver one) uses 2 x Stackpole Potentiometers and 1 CTS. The Klon uses CTS Pots straight through (Chicago Telephone Services) CTS. they are not the same.
@@ChickenThug55 You really should look up confirmation bias, as you are perfectly exemplifying it, here. You desperately *want that the Gold Klon is the "tastiest sounding above all" even better than the original silver Klon to be true, so you actually believe this. IN FACT: the original silver and gold Klons are identical in every way, save for the color of the pedal housing. This is confirmed by their creator, Bill Finnegan and literally every piece of literature and video about them, ever. Essentially you've just said that an identical red car is faster than a black one, because it's red. 🤣🤣
@@fongy200 You are correct. The same reason we swap out cheaply made electronics, like pots, in our guitars for their superior CTS or Switchcraft components, applies here. Bill Finnegan used the absolute best components that money could buy, in his handmade Klon Centaurs. You can trace the components and duplicate them, but unless you use EVERY SINGLE part, same for same, there will be differences. Will you be able to hear them? Unlikely, but they will be different.
Indeed - I'm from somewhere there :) I'm not saying yet about which is which but I will post it later or even make a short vid with the results on there :) Thanks for watching.
Well I think they are an acquired taste for sure - and personally I would never pay that sort of money. But these two are close I think... all very interesting though. So which is which dogpa?
@@tonymckenzieofficial I'll go with B but I'm not really sure not being. Klon or klone-type pedal user myself (I'm more of a Maxon OD808 and OD9 / TubeScreamer kind of guy). I am curious though how this Ceritone Centura would sound with a traditional strat with low output single coil pickups. Thanks for the great video!

Ha the problem with the real Klon Centaur is that it might last ten minutes until someone steals it! I do have one but ha its not for playing often... the Ceriatone is perfect for most other stuff. Thanks for your post really good and thanks for watching.
The way Ceriatone connected the pots is superior. Mounting the pots directly on the PCB as they did in the Klon is just asking for trouble.
Good point... but which was the real tone A or B? Answer later.
Hey Tony it's me, I have the silver Centaura and it does what it says on the tin.
Well done - they are pretty cool... but which one A or B was the Klon? :) T
'Like' already just because you're back!
:) I have been here all along... fading rapidly :)
@@tonymckenzieofficial Yes, I missed a few videos and have some catching up to do.
I had Centura while it looks close to original. Best sounding clone was Decibelics. One person I know had original Klon and Decibelics and sold Klon when price was going higher since they sounded the same f2f.
Thanks for the info - I don't know that other pedal myself... but the Klon I would sell if I needed the money irrespective of anything else.
But there was no doubt that the Ceriatone was near sounding.
these are mainly used as clean boosts... no cranking the gain up🤦♂
I’d go device A to be the klon? Just sounded more even across all the frequencies?
Thanks - I will post on here eventually :)
I have no idea which one is the real deal but B was just a little bit brighter than A….They both sounded good… Plus the sounds will change depending on the amp and guitar combination
Like the sound of A which is which I don't have a clue
I'm guessing "B" for Klon.
But is it? :) You will have to wait for the answer... Thanks....
i prefer A. thinkin it may be the KLON. Cheers Tony
It is hard to tell... there's no real reference of anything. Like I said in the video - most guys have a view, but whether its right or wrong is what matters... answer later :)
Great presentation! You are very good!
Thank you Steve and glad you liked the video...
I’m goin with B. Has that fully floored gas pedal sound...
It IS hard to tell, and so many guys choose A and so many choose B. All will be revealed later... and there is a difference between the tones. Thanks for your answer and watching too...
"A" sounded slightly fuller to my ear, the one I'd prefer. No clue if it's real or copy.
Well at least you tried! I have to say that without the images it is hard to determine. The truth is though that each pedal (no matter how it sounds) is aimed today at different markets I think. The two only ever meet in a video like this :). Thanks for watching and the answer will be posted later...
I have no clue as to which is which, but I liked "B" better. It sounded a bit more "defined" and articulate.
Thanks for posting and it shows that there is a small difference - but as to which is which... I'll be posting that answer later... and thanks for your efforts...
Device B, Thanks Tony have a good week.
We shall see when I reveal the answer later... and thanks for the post of what you think....
I'll certainly bear it in mind.... and thanks for pointing that out.
I have no idea which is which, but Device B sounded as though it had more gain.
That's a genuine answer... I noticed that too but other than that, different guys hear different things and it's a bit hard to tell exactly which is which I think from these sort of tests. Thanks for watching and the answer will be revealed later...
Found your channel and its really cool. Can i recommend you bump the talking audio though haha. Having to crank the TV way up
Just been working on new camera and pro quality audio... my very last review (Halon tremolo gold) shows some of the improvement of the audio and video. Thanks.
I have never seen anyone compare a Klon with another Klon, do you think they would sound identical? A pricey test that would be!
Ha nearly... one is a Ceriatone 'clone' and the other is the real deal. But you should post from the audio which is which :). Thanks.
Very similar sounding.I’d say b was the original Klon because of it being that bit noisier.Ceriatone do make fabulous amps I’ve got one of their dizzy 30’s a fabulous sounding amp!
I like Ceriatone amps and have built them and owned others. Mine even worked! :) answer later.
I know B was the real Klon, but I really preferred A. Perhaps your strumming was more aggressive on B?
CeriaTone is malay for cheerful tone. Pronounced Chair-Ear
Ha I tend to speak English and anything else is a guess :) But thanks for pointing it all out... and for watching.
B was louder but otherwise they sounded the same to me. I didn't particularly like the sound of either of them but I enjoyed the video.
That is a very good point... Thanks for watching.
Totally agree mate. 10/10..
Thanks...
I prefer how B sounds but haven't a clue which is which🤔
I have to say it is not that easy - answer soon.
The noisier one I figure must be the original. Hard to imagine Ceriatone wouldn't lower the noise floor
It's a good point but which is it A or B :)
It always sounds the same until people see which pedal it is and then it sounds different your eyes help your ears listen differently
Still subjective...
there is an audible volume/gain jump on device b...so no real fair comparison, although I love my centura
I tried! Thanks...
B is the klon A is the Ceritone but they do sound the same .
That's possible... answer soon :)
The question to me is not which is which but whether the Klon is as good as any other random boost pedal. It doesn’t sound that great to me!
Well it is subjective. I thought exactly that, then sat down with it in front of a JC800 (original), a Les Paul and a well known USA dealer and I bought it within 5 mins! I do think it's a hands on thing, but the Ceriatone is a really great pedal also and so near...
So which one is the 'cr*p' on? Or are they both so 'cr*p' that you can't tell? That's an interesting question :) Thanks.
I liked A because B was noisey. Maybe the levels were off!
Been a while since I did it... seemed similar at the time.. thanks for watching.
B has more mids, does that make it real? I like, A better I'm a huge ceriatone amp fan.
I'll post the answer later :)
Device B id more tight.
So I think that is Klon.
Mr McKenzie please correct me if I am wrong.
Answer later today :)
I'm pretty uncertain that B is the Klon.
It is hard to tell. If I had put the pictures then everyone would have said 'I knew that' but in reality it is harder to choose without them and each pedal stands on its own merits. Answer coming later and thanks for watching.
I would Hope ‘A’ is the real Klon...
‘B’ is loose and awful, but it’s louder so most people will obviously like it.
I mean, am I the only one here who hears how loose the bottom end is in the B? That’s what I always listen for in these boost pedals and the A seems nice and tight.
If B is the real Klon, I can cross that off my bucket list!
You may or not be! But thanks for this point... useful. Answer later today...
Dude, total respect for you, love your work but you can bugger off with the "it's up to you to determine" stuff.
Ha - come on now... no breaking out of the ranks :) but I get that... thing is you watched it and hopefully it was useful to you and that's all that matters! :)
@@tonymckenzieofficial In humor and perhaps too much familiarity. My apologies. I love your work.
I get it :) thanks
If the circuit is the same, and the soldering quality is the same, the only reason they wouldn't sound the same is the components aren't exactly the same. If they ARE exactly the same. they WILL sound the same.
But... these are worth $250 and the others are worth $(put your figure here) so there is more to it than just the sum of the parts :) - a very good comment... and thanks for watching.
To anyone who thinks it sounds different do a blindfold challenge and I guarantee you cannot tell the difference
Subjective.... but in either case, the Klon Centaur is the real deal and the non-Klon Centaura is not.. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for the info - I learned something again! Any idea on which pedal is the Centaur? A or B?
A) Is the Klon...I didn't guess...
You did :)
B is the real deal
Answer later today...
b sounds the best for me..
But which is which :) Many guys don't answer the question - ha understandable...
A is the Ceriatone.
Are you sure? and if so why? it could be the Ceriatone or it might not be... answers later... and thanks...
In a couple other videos I’ve watched comparing the klon it was noisy. B was noisy A didn’t seem to be. I’m sticking to my opinion. 😂
what difference there is is insignificant. They are the same.
Unlikely, but they will be different.
ill go for B, I think thats the Klon, thanks for the info tony love your vids, from the land of oatcakes and pikelets
Indeed - I'm from somewhere there :) I'm not saying yet about which is which but I will post it later or even make a short vid with the results on there :) Thanks for watching.
Amazing what propaganda can do to create clueless 'posserism'. Another good vid.
Well I think they are an acquired taste for sure - and personally I would never pay that sort of money. But these two are close I think... all very interesting though. So which is which dogpa?
I pick A as the real deal
Answer later today...
? I liked B
Answer soon...
B Klon.
But is it? It is possible... but tell me why you think that? and thanks for watching...
B sounded a little louder than A and midrange sounded a little different. B sounded better to me.
But which is the Klon? or which is the Ceriatone depending on if you want one preference over the other? Thanks
B
That's what I thought too :)
Correct.
I've heard it pronounced as "cherry-ah-tone". It's non-intuitive.
Ha I have called it everything - perhaps excluding how it is pronounced :) but which A or B? is the real deal?
@@tonymckenzieofficial I'll go with B but I'm not really sure not being. Klon or klone-type pedal user myself (I'm more of a Maxon OD808 and OD9 / TubeScreamer kind of guy). I am curious though how this Ceritone Centura would sound with a traditional strat with low output single coil pickups. Thanks for the great video!
device b is Klon.
It could be ;-) or not! :) Answer later... and thanks for participating on this one...
