      @briannielsen9556 3 года назад +26

      I guess playing black metal from ‘95 to ‘04 and basically been into metal my whole life, does not qualify then. And yeah....being Scandinavian as well. Never heard people state this, because it’s a silly statement. First off....have you ever heard Viking music? Compare that to black metal and you will not see any similarities. Only the so-called Viking/pagan metal will put your thoughts into that direction. Venom, Mayhem, Darkthrone etc does not. You see....black metal is distorted guitars primarily in minor chords. The Viking music you hear is not primarily played in minor chords. Quite the opposite actually. It’s often in major chords and sounds happy. Second of all....have anyone really heard authentic Viking music? No. We think we know how it sounded based upon what? Instruments found in the ground dated back to this era? Have you seen any music score from that time? No one really knows how the music sounded a thousand years ago. That’s pure speculations. Third of all....if you know about music linage, you will know that black metal derives from metal which came from rock which came from blues etc. I’ve never heard Viking music been put into that linage. But of course....in some way you might be right as everything then will have to derive from Viking music and all ancient music. Music has evolved through time and now we are here. But I don’t think that these people, who has stated this, thinks of this evolution of music. It sounds like they know very little about music and mix in romantic thoughts, because of the Scandinavian past. One thing I’ve heard is people comparing black metal to classical music. What do they have in common? It’s usually the atmosphere, they point at. But really? A lot of music have so-called atmosphere and you do not compare it to classical music. If you look away from Dimmu and the like of course. But that’s a totally different thing. They combine metal and classical music. Black metal in its entity is entirely different and it’s all about what people mix in regarding feelings, individual musical knowledge etc. But breaking down black metal and classical music and you will not see a lot of similarities besides some classical pieces are played in minor as well. Does that mean that black metal derives from classical music? No. It just means that they use the same chord progressions sometimes. Like all music today. Being Scandinavia this statement about black metal deriving from Vikings is silly. It’s just a emotional thing and has nothing to do with reality. And actually black metal didn’t even originate from Norway.

    • @plisfor
      @plisfor 3 года назад

      @@briannielsen9556 ok you really know what your taking and it may not be true but in usa and south América some people believe it.. Im not inventing anything.. Maybe they conected some facts about Norweigan black metal ideology and some impressions and feels about the sound.. But you may be the righ persons to teach us (no sarcasm) what do you think about that idea?

    • @briannielsen9556
      @briannielsen9556 3 года назад +4

      @@plisfor I’m not sure that teaching is necessary 😉. I’m sure most people know the history of music and which music style developed into a certain style. Be it metal, techno or any other style for that matter. They all have something in common. They derive from something. Techno derives from the 80’s electronic music which derives from the music of the 70’s and so on. All main styles pretty much leads to something new eventually….in some way or another.
      But yes….I do believe that some people seem to “romantify” black metal and it’s origin. The second wave pretty much started in Norway and became huge after a few years. It was what turned me away from black metal as well. But the fact that people see this extreme style of metal coming out of Norway and heard about all the stories from the early 90’s a narrative was born. And especially black metal tended to be more than just music. It was a riot (like punk used to be), it was about art, it was about being yourself, it was about being provocative, it was about pushing the boundaries and saying no to the normal. And to people outside of Norway, black metal became mythical. And with myths come a lot of different narratives and misunderstandings. Like it derived from Viking music. That’s just because some people make it true. True to them self. A lot of people also believed that a lot of them actually were satanists. In fact only a few were satanists. Most just liked the satanic provocation. Like today. How many black metal artists believes this? No one in their right mind. It’s just easier to get fans using pentagrams and satanic stuff. And to me it’s the easy way of doing it. It has been 50 years or so with the use of satanic and anti-christian symbols in metal and rock. It’s not provoking anyone anymore. Besides a few places like Poland, the Bible Belt in the USA etc. In Europe in general no one gives a fuck about this. It has lost its power.
      But early Norwegian black metal was unique and brilliant. It became more than music and that’s not often, that happens. But when it happens a lot of myths and misunderstandings will occur of course.
      Like I stated in the earlier message….breaking down chord progressions, song structure, instruments in use etc will leave very little similarities between Viking music and black metal. BUT the Norwegian bands like Storm adopted the Scandinavian folk music style into black metal. Then it becomes a whole different thing. Now it’s becoming black/folklore metal and not just black metal. Viking/pagan black metal bands adopted the typical Scandinavian folklore music melodies. The intervals between notes that we today perceive as Viking melodies. The more major chord oriented melodies that sounds more happy. Again it’s black metal that is being turned into something else. Because the black metal sound is evil and rough. But you can blend stuff into it to make it less rough and evil. Then the black metal label will be attached with another label as well. Like pagan/Viking black metal. But theoretically it derives from different things. That Scandinavian folklore scales fit the black metal sound is different. To a certain extent I think that melodies suits that style very much. And I used to like Mithotyn very much, because it spoke to my Scandinavian roots and self image. There’s no doubt that most of us in Denmark, Norway and Sweden take some sort of pride in our past. I really don’t know why. Because what is actually to like? That we raped, mass murdered and were savages? What’s really cool about that? To me a violent and savage past is nothing to be proud of. Our forefathers weren’t only about rape and pillaging of course. We were farmers and business men who traveled very far to buy/sell and exchange stuff. But to be realistic….that’s not what we think of, when talking about being proud of our Viking past. It’s the violent side. It’s stupid. But the Viking and folklore music appeal to our roots.
      Satyricon was pretty much the only band in within the Norwegian scene in the early 90’s, that incorporated melodies that weren’t pure minor. They did that on Shadowthrone and Nemesis Divina. Dark Medieval Times and the demos were a lot more rough. And even if Shadowthrone and Nemesis Divina were filled with cool melodies, it wasn’t really comparable to the typical scales and chord progressions of Scandinavian folklore music. It came with the pagan/Viking metal bands like Mithotyn. Even Old Man’s Child weren’t really comparable to the scales and progressions that we perceive as Viking music. It was just very melodic. And Old Man’s Child is not to be considered as a part of the real and first black metal bands from Norway. That was pretty much only Darkthrone, Mayhem, Emperor, Burzum, Thorns, Immortal, Satyricon, (Enslaved) and Gorgoroth. They are considered the fathers of the second wave (the Norwegian wave) which launched all these different bands that afterwards took black metal in many different directions. But the original bands had really nothing to do with melodies. Besides Satyricon of course.
      So yes….the truth is what you say it is. If believing that Viking music is the source of black metal, then that is the truth for you. The truth is what it is….until it’s not and the truth becomes something else.
      The first real black metal didn’t even come from Norway. Venom from England started the style and term. Bathory was from Sweden. Hellhammer and Celtic Frost from somewhere in Europe. There were some bands from your area as well, which were there in the beginning. But people seem to focus on the Norwegian scene. It’s also the best one 😉.

    This is how I write all of my songs before playing it through my amp. It's just easier to pick up the guitar and start playing. Plus black metal does sound cool when you are playing it acoustically.

    Every metal genre becomes Arabic Music without distortion.

    • @Patosincabeza

      Playing the harmonic minor scale doesn't make a song "Arabic" you obviously don't know what you are talking about son.

      @@Patosincabeza Well, I think he's partially right, but his statement is too generalized. You definitely can hear some arabic (egyptian) flavour playing harmonic minor/phrygian dominant in certain ways, by highlighting some notes (degrees if the scale). In harmonic minor scale for me it works with 5th, 6th, 7th and 1th degrees. The most 'arabic' sounding BM bands for me is Behemoth and Marduk. Dissection guys were able to make notes which can be found in harmonic minor scale to be sounding more in classical/medieval/dissonant manner (for example e minor and b minor chords in the intro in the 'where dead angels lie')
