But while this has created opportunities that have the potential to generate substantial economic benefits for the island, it has also presented local authorities with a growing challenge - that of effectively monitoring and protecting the brand from exploitation by some in the global marketplace, which is resulting in Jamaica losing out on billions in potential earnings. It is estimated that the island loses about US$20 billion of the economic value of Brand Jamaica annually. This economic value is said to be worth between US$33 billion and US$35 billion annually - based on a formula used by Interbrand to calculate brand value, on an annual basis. Interbrand, established in 1974, describes itself as being the world's leading brand consultancy, with a network of 33 offices in 27 countries. It is the publisher of the highly influential annual Best Global Brands ranking. "Jamaica's brand value is two and half times its gross domestic product ... . That means there is US$20 billion we can't convert," social entrepreneur Dr Henley Morgan told The Gleaner in an earlier interview. Headlines Delivered to Your Inbox Sign up for The Gleaner’s morning and evening newsletters. The Jamaica Promotions Agency (JAMPRO), the principal government agency responsible for promoting and safeguarding Jamaica's brand internationally, said the economic opportunities that continue to escape the country's grasp are something that it is concerned about, but can do very little to halt. "This is a particularly vexing area of concern," JAMPRO told The Gleaner. The agency, in an emailed response to our questions, said the Government just does not have all the resources "necessary to police and monitor the presence of our brands in the international marketplace". Register with JIPO Consequently, JAMPRO said it has been encouraging local businesses to register their intellectual properties with the Jamaica Intellectual Property Office (JIPO) based in Kingston. "Also, we ensure that several of our workshops do include sessions on intellectual property protection. Professional advice is also available by contacting the JAMPRO Contact Centre," it added. Joan Webley, the manager of copyrights and related rights at JIPO, had explained previously to The Gleaner that the agency has been pursuing what is referred to as geographical indication (GI) registration to protect products made in Jamaica. A GI is a name, or sign, used on certain products, which corresponds to a specific geographical location or origin. The use of a GI may act as certification that the product possesses certain qualities and is made according to traditional methods, or boasts a certain reputation, because of its geographical origin. According to JAMPRO, "In markets throughout the world, Brand Jamaica products are highly favoured". It explained that "Brand Jamaica has managed to do this with the skill and performance of its people [and as such], globally, persons feel a positive affinity for Jamaica - which is the first step towards someone actually buying a product from Jamaica". Because of the high favourability of Jamaican products in the international marketplace, JAMPRO said it has to consider seriously the island's ability to meet the demand for those genuine Jamaican products that are marketed to the world. "Jamaica's limitation lies not in the realm of inability to market, but in our ability to satisfy the demand once realised," JAMPRO explained. Meanwhile, Roselyn Fisher, general manager of the marketing and development arm of the Scientific Research Council (SRC), revealed that the agency is now busy in the formulation of products from nearly 100 different local medicinal herbs and weeds, including the guinea hen weed, which is revered for its anti-cancer properties. The SRC - an agency of the Ministry of Science, Technology, Energy and Mining - has been spearheading the development of authentic and unique Jamaican foods, teas, beverages, cosmetics and other products. It also does food analysis, establishes plant profiles, as well as propagates and develops high-yielding plant varieties, including tissue culture for sweet potato, banana, and miniature roses, among others. Ganja Products With lawmakers about to give the green light for the production of ganja for medicinal use, the SRC general manager told The Gleaner that it is working in partnership with several entities in developing a number of products from local ganja - another plant for which Jamaica is already renowned. "One of the [products] that we are actively pushing right now is lemon grass. To that extent, we have brought to market lemon grass body wash and lotion, and persons have gone on to manufacture lemon grass drink, tea - different blends - and have exported them and are doing well," Fisher highlighted. Another product that the SRC is currently pushing is sweet potato, for which formulations are being developed for chips, flour, and drink. Additionally, "We have formulations for beverages, herbal teas, sauces, condiments, jams and jellies, minimally processed foods," she said, explaining further that "we also do new product development, not just for food, but also for personal care, and a lot of persons are now coming in for us to assist them with products for natural hair."
Totally agree with everything you said here. I have always suggested that Marcus Garvey philosophy and peinciples should be taught at all levels of our educational institutions. Take time in your approach because the majority of our peeps are not liberated in their thinking. We all want to be somebody but very few want to do what is meaningful and substantial enough to acheive that goal, we instead find glory in the small things that are momentary. Brianna lyston is going to break Flo Jo's record.I have never doubted her even when she had been plagued by injuries. In 2021 I argued with a lady who's daughter runs for Edwin Allen in the same relay team with Clayton twins.I told the lady that Brianna lyston is going to beat the Clayton twins and take her rightful place. She is the female equivalent of Usain bolt.Maverick u and I think alike, intelligent inclined.
"Golden Generation of Jamaican sprinters." I like that label. They were doing it since 2008 but nobody nuh notice because Bolt was the big ticket. Only when he step off then people notice that. With 5 to six young girls performing and waiting to slide in after that Golden Generation ready to move on, this is bad news for American sprinters. This dominant Jamaican Female era is not a flash-in-the-pan. There seem to be no end to the talent flowing out of there.
I'm really impressed with Brianna Lyston, but please don't count out Tamari Davis, from the United States! Keep in mind, that Tamari Davis ran the 200 meters in 22.48 back in 2018 when she was only 15 years old! She's currently 19 years old, as of February 15th of this year, and Brianna Lyston, will be turning 18 on May 24th of this year. What I love about both Brianna Lyston and Tamari Davis, they both have that long smooth stride, (like Allyson Felix) which makes me realize, with training, they can become great sprinters in all three sprint events, (100, 200 and 400 meter events.
Lyston is a super talented girl, Alana is promising also, but i love Newgent, i love her spirit, the fact that this girl was crying like a baby when not getting a medal in the world hurdle, she finish 5th or 6th against world best 9 runners in this race and was not a happy bonnie, this tells me she has what it takes.
Doubling 1-2 is no problem. VCB and most of the sprinters have done it. Its the boys who have had those problems. I think Jamaica need to make the boys classes like the girls, where class 2 is more rigorous and class one not so much. So its almost like a cool down period before they transistion.
Talking about platinum, l think it's time platinum be given to 1st place gold 2nd, silver3rd and bronze 4th place. These Jamaicans are running some crazy time, value more than gold or silver, time they throw in all some diamond.

I think that her success would be more assured if she remains in Jamaica. The NCAA seems to be the "graveyard" for so many promising young sprinters as it relates to their career after college. The coaches only care about accumulating points to win the championship with little regard for the long-term career success of the athletes.
@@trackuniverse9121 I am not saying that she should not do it if that's her decision, but she would be wise to weigh the pros and the cons before coming to such a consequential decision. Just take note of our global super stars since 2008. They trained in Jamaica and a few who went abroad, like Omar McLeod, gave up their scholarships to turn professionals. The NCAA system can be very brutal on the body, having to compete anually in both the indoor and outdoor seasons to earn their keep by gaining points for their respective schools. Nowadays, as long as you are very talented you have no problem getting sponsors. So many of our current crop of athletes either attended or are still attending universities in Jamaica getting an education without the burdensome workload thrust upon them by the oppressive NCAA system.

Register with JIPO
Consequently, JAMPRO said it has been encouraging local businesses to register their intellectual properties with the Jamaica Intellectual Property Office (JIPO) based in Kingston.
Ganja Products
With lawmakers about to give the green light for the production of ganja for medicinal use, the SRC general manager told The Gleaner that it is working in partnership with several entities in developing a number of products from local ganja - another plant for which Jamaica is already renowned.
Great post..I hope it will provoke thought for those who might read it. You know how our attention span is.. blessings
Most definitely 👏👏
let's wish greatness for all girls
HELL YEAH ILL PUT EVERYTHING ON BRIANNA LYSTON- SHE IS THE BIZNESS!!!!
The success of the athletes at the high school level doesn't guarantee future success. Let's give these youngster time to develop without the hype.
This is not a complete picture just talking points.VCB, Sherone Simpson, Melanie Walker , Ristannana Tracey, Keron Stewart, Sherieka Jackson, Nathaliah Whyte Jonielle Smith, a hill one Calvary Christania Williams, Danielle Williams, Megan Tapper, Natoya Goule Janieve Russell Daniellel Thomasc-Dodd , Shanieka Thomas Chanice Porter Shadae Lawrence all did well in high school and transition well to senior level.Just simplistic , without any supporting argument. For example in the women 100 and 200 Shelly Elaine and VCB have dominated not just on the Jamaican scene but also at world level. This take away from Jonielle who made the wc, Christania Williams made an Olympic final Thefacts if examine closely show the rate of transition. to be very high especially on the female side.
I agree with you maverick I would rather she stays in Jamaica and attend university. In America they suffer from over work and fatigue every weekend is another track meet sometimes far away in terms of plane travel plus academic pressure is applied . In Jamaica the track program is about maybe three months long so the rest of time she could spend training .. I am excited to see the future .. feel Ike mi waan fly in fi champs this year cause it ago scorchy
She is the female equivalent of Usain bolt.Maverick u and I think alike, intelligent inclined.
if only they were strictly allowing only females to compete on the international level.. you gonna have ppl with more man in their genes competing
We got a glimpse of the shining diamond at 🏆.
Oral (the genious! ) tracey.
Raw born sprinter
Send Brianna Liston to frano !! Flo Jo record gone by she reach 23 yrs old , put mi house on it
Cannot argue against that.
Mi already bet on her and mi caah loose.... Brianna Lyston fimi money 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
The best, the best.
Definately a200m future prospect...
The JAAA should put in a restriction on the schools so they don’t enter an athlete in too many events so as to preserve these young talents.
There is a restriction, they can only do 2 individual & 2 relays..
NICE SLOW MOTION FLYING IS STRECHING SO STRECH MORE
The twins are heavy right now
I'm really impressed with Brianna Lyston, but please don't count out Tamari Davis, from the United States!
Wish all three of dem turn top sprinters cause that would be good for the sport
Lyston is a super talented girl, Alana is promising also, but i love Newgent, i love her spirit, the fact that this girl was crying like a baby when not getting a medal in the world hurdle, she finish 5th or 6th against world best 9 runners in this race and was not a happy bonnie, this tells me she has what it takes.
She not running 400m in the future man that would be a bad decision but 100m and 200m something is happening
She will make the world champs team if her team manages her well.
What happened to Kevona Davis?
The young Marlene ottey/kerone Stewart
The Olympic will have to issue 2 gold and 2 silver in the 100m for us in future. Due to we tieing for both gold and silver with 4 girls in the final 😅
Hope these high school coach dont burn out the kids for high school glory , only the 200 and the relay she should run , her parents need to let the school know that
She already ran almost 30 races since last week. Good luck with that.
@@seanwilson5516 I could name over a hundred school star athlete who burn out after high school , so pathetic
This girl remind me of Marlene Ottey
Told you so lmao 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Stephen Francis must be her next coach #perspective
Bree dem run things ya now, Bree liston,Bree Williams, silkboss Bree ETC
Fact: Hydel is chasing champs, there is no other reason this kind of talent would leave Jago for Hydel
2 years maverick.
Now as it pertains to Brianna I am lock step with you. I’m betting the house in her too. I think she’s built for it. When she add a few lbs to the frame and get stronger she will do damage. I’m just waiting.
Mi agree 100% father Tracey
Agreeing with u Maverick! I'd bet on her too
She reminds me of a young Marlene Frazer
Same thing unu do for year was big up Frazer price and bash down elaine Thompson . Elaine beat Frazer price is because she a play passom elaine beat her again oh that's because Frazer price not fully fit ect. Today briana wins the heat over tia its such a big deal then I read where is tina why she hiding. Then in the final briana missing in auction oh the coach don't wants her to get hurt . I hope she not hiding from tina . Just enjoy these kids and let them grow up to be stars for christ sake .
Who!t is your problem you are hyping thecctwins yet complaining about others hyping their favourite?
I am Tina on tia mother I left it in god hand only him no what going to happen god bless u all
@@noelbartley1084 it's not about favorite it's more than that, how about we all support our young. Athletes stop The devided am routing for all off them include carica hill and the other edwin allen girl that runs neck and neck with the twins.
@@Brooklynfishing You are here cheering the twins yet upset if others cheer who they want. You want others to follow your lead.
It betta u bet it pan Liverpool
She reminds me of Alison Felix...
Why did she left St.Jago???
Good question... Bought?
So true sub 11 coming soon
I feel so too
She is my girl too.
She not really my girl at Champs but for the world really I love the twins too really they are my girl really it's going to be crazy my heart beating fast already
@@sonic_marsh5342 I love her from Jago days. But most of all we will dominate sprinting for a long time. Pray non of these athletes get injured.
Don't forget Kevona Davis just yet.
Davis is very special too
She go overseas so I don't look there again
Kevona made a bad choice she should have stayed home. She's going backwards. Right now she cannot beat the twin or Lyston in a hundred or 200. When she leave high school she was running 11.1 now she's struggling to run11.3
Well, this commentary aged well.😏
You are no Maverick, you are a Mavic.
BL is a cool girl!
Maverick, where do you think she should go after hydel?
Me nuh really like the NCAA thing enuh.
I think she should go to mr Walcott or me Francis or mr mills even thou him nuh really coach females
@@audriabailey7812 that what I think. I pray to the white jesus she doesn't go to the NCAA
I think that her success would be more assured if she remains in Jamaica. The NCAA seems to be the "graveyard" for so many promising young sprinters as it relates to their career after college. The coaches only care about accumulating points to win the championship with little regard for the long-term career success of the athletes.
@@audreydavis45 so what if she's seeking a scholarship?
MAVERICK What you think of her chances against Mboma? who might still be u20
Dont worry bout the hammite a Hebrew thing this
What about ashanti Moore
Brianna Lyston remind me of Merlene Ottey
True talk 👏👏👏👏👏👏
