This was so insightful! Thank you for taking the time to share your experience - I really appreciate how open you were about your experience and the things you did/didn't like! I'm applying to a training DE role as a non-cs/stem student and I'm so worried about things not clicking and being fired or something - it's good to know I'm not the only one with worries like that! Sad to hear that you would get skipped over during meetings - I keep hearing things like that online and it's worrying. I don't want to be seen as not contributing to a team but in reality I'm just not being allowed to, or not having my ideas/concerns talked about in a team - was there any response/change to how meetings are conducted to make sure people aren't overlooked? Thanks again for sharing, I really appreciate having an inside understanding of what its like as an intern and the different teams :)
Thank you so much for leaving this comment! It means a lot to me that this video helped you 😊 I was too much of a chicken back then to bring up how I felt about being skipped in those meetings. I think it was unconscious bias but it’s still a shitty experience and now I know that I should stick up for myself more. Also that’s so exciting that you’re applying for DE roles!! Don’t worry about things not clicking and being fired. Sometimes it might not click because you’re just not learning in the best way for you or you are learning but it’s a lot to take in all at once and it’s just overwhelming. So keep track of the things you learn every day and then you can look back and see WOW I ACTUALLY KNOW A LOT MORE THAN I THOUGHT I DID. It’s also helpful to try to explain what you’re learning to someone else like how I tried to explain stuff to my mom even though she’s not in tech at all and doesn’t understand any of the words I’m saying 🤣
Thanks for watching! And leave any questions you have about the program or my experience in the comments 🤠 (also this video isn't sponsored by the program and i'm honest about all the stuff that happened. I just wanted to make this so that I can finally answer the questions I get in DMs all the time after people stalk me on LinkedIn and find out I was in dev degree 😆)
@@harpreetjanday1660 ugh i know applying for internships is the worst. One of my friends applied EVERY semester to shopify and only in his 9th try did he get an interview and now he's finally working there this summer. I'm happy he never gave up but feedback from any recruiter would be great whenever you get rejected (especially after having to build a project to apply). So keep trying harp 💖
Hello, Maria! I applied this year(I applied kinda late) and they sent some questions, essays etc. I did all of them and my background in coding was very good, so I was wondering what was the reasons got rejected. I know everyone not always go to the interviews there has to be some unlucky moments and etc. But what is your advice for getting selected?
@@khataisuleymanl9369 I’m not sure because maybe they saw that for some reason you might not be a good fit for the program. I don’t know what goes on behind the scenes when they grade the applications but I know that when I interview anywhere and send my resume, a lot of the time it’s about luck. You might apply one time and get no reply and then a few months later that same company is messaging YOU to do an interview. It’s also probably hard for them to narrow down to such a small number of students when now thousands of people are applying. The only advice I can give is the stuff I mentioned in the video because I don’t know what else they would look for
Thanks Maria for answering! Haha I wish there will be a lucky time for me too:)) Ps. Your video is very informative and your new hair style is very nice:) Good luck!
I just got into tech last year at 27 & i wanted to do a CS degree and i have been looking for scholarships & this is a really good option, now to figure out how to pay for flights and accomodation 😩. Thank you for this video.
Nice video, well done on your career and really good luck for all what will come 🍀Is it just on presence or works online/remotely on those universities you mentioned?!
Thank you!!! Yes for the Canadian schools you need to be in person but the US one is actually a remote university (I still think they require people to live somewhere in the US). And the work at Shopify is remote now
Hmm I think it was around 2-4k per month as the range for intern salaries. So you start off lower and then it keeps increasing as you become better over the months/years. Also they pay your tuition for school which is another ~10k per year since we take courses in the summer as well and each course is around 1k
ah I don’t have access to that anymore but it was like html and then things under there like flex box and grid and then css, javascript, git, and react. This was because I was doing frontend
Hi Maria.I'm an international student interested in applying for the Dev Degree Program.Could you assist me with your Instagram handle ,I'm really stuck somewhere, especially in applying from the chosen 3 universities.Pleaseeeee

Hello Maria, Will they consider a Mature Student? can I apply straight to the Dev Degree Program or do I need to apply to University first?
Hi! I’m thinking of going to UofT for cs would I still be able to apply to the dev degree?
Hi! No unfortunately you have to be at one of the participating schools and UofT isn’t one of them
Hi!! can I ask how much $CAD do you get from your intern salary? thank you
