This was a favorite in our bunk tent in Nam in 1970. We sang in 4 part harmonies. Me, a white guy, 2 black brothers, and an hispanic guy named Luis. They're all gone now, except me.
Calling the dead underrated feels weird, but i truly feel like they are. Most folks think of them as an experimental live jam band, but this album and American Beauty are two of the greatest slices of country-rock ever put to wax.
I bought this album in 1970 because I liked the name ( I had never heard of the Grateful dead. ) I did not miss too many concerts after that when they came to Denver.
Masterpiece album by the dead. Album had rock country bluegrass and the blues all on this album. Love Cumberland Blues has a great bluegrass sound to it. Song is phenomenal
It’s gonna be on my 100 album list. I’ve got a 100 favorite songs list on my channel. I bought this on 8 track when it first came out. I’d ride around in my 67 VW and be digging it!
Love all their psychedelic lengthy tracks, but in my humble opinion working man's dead is their best album and one of my all time favorite albums!! I put it of equal greatness with dark side of the moon 🌚
For me it’s Cumberland Blues and Brokedown Palace. Favorite live CB is from 5/2/70. So many different layers in those songs that I don’t think they could replicate live
First Dead album I bought 1970. Wasn't the last. "Some other fella's makin' nothin at all and you can hear him cry, "can I go buddy can I go down, take your shift at the mine?" ,,," " make good money $5 a day made any more and I'd move away" Great Song!!! Thanks for the Post!!!
@@jimfrazzitta4218 Funny you liked and commented today! I threw Electric Koolaid Acid Test in my backpack to read at work today and just finished a chapter! Cheers brother!
Faun fact: Workingman's Dead was Hunter $ Thompson's fav. Dead album and still referred to the band as the Warlocks, their stage name when Hunter first saw them perform in SF.
Man , I've been a fan of the Dead for about 40yrs. But I'll admit over the yrs I sorta drifted away. I have recently really started to listen to them again. Lol and it's been a pretty fun journey I wont deny !!
+Grayson D No no no , you got it all wrong, people around our age group recognize The Dead, but only like 3 songs by them (Touch of Grey, Truckin', Casey Jones). And they think that's justification for wearing tye-die steal your faces shirts. Smh... I grew up with two huge dead heads for parents, so i've literally loved them my whole life, as I'm sure you have, so it's pretty funny that all of a sudden kids are wearing their logo's and shit.
Greatness! Glad you got it! I got it when I was about 15. Everyone else was listening to to Twisted Sister any of the other similar bands. To me they looked and sounded like a bunch of alcoholic housewives. Be happy you choose your own opinion!
The hard, cold, fact is, the Dead didn't come out of the 70s sounding too good. Jerry Garcia Band and other projects are worthwhile, but having seen them live after Brent died, I can say you didn't miss anything. I've been listening to The Dead my whole life (born in 71) but after 1978 there isn't much good live stuff. I said what I said.
I can't stay here much longer, Melinda The sun is getting high I can't help you with your troubles If you won't help with mine I gotta get down I gotta get down Gotta get down to the mine You keep me up just one more night I can't stop here no more Little Ben clock says quarter to eight You kept me up till four I gotta get down I gotta get down Or I can't work there no more Lotta poor man make a five dollar bill Will keep him happy all the time Some other fellow's making nothing at all And you can hear him cry Can I go, buddy, can I go down Take your shift at the mine Gotta get down to the Cumberland mine Gotta get down to the Cumberland mine That's where I mainly spend my time Make good money, five dollars a day If I made any more I might move away Lotta poor man got the Cumberland Blues He can't win for losing Lotta poor man got to walk the line Just to pay his union dues I don't know now, I just don't know If I'm coming back again I don't know now, I just don't know If I'm coming back again I don't know now, I just don't know If I'm coming back again
If we're going to celebrate The Wall and OK Computer as Rock Opera, then we better add Workingman's Dead and American Beauty as the originators of the concept
Really? I have been a fan for over 30 years, and I haven't ever heard that this wasn't a fan favorite. People go nuts for it at shows... even at shows when another band (Hot Buttered Rum is an amazing example) covers it.
There is a weird rattling sound in the background here that I haven't heard in "studio versions". I thought it might be just one track, like the hat or something, but it it's across the tracks. It's really fucking hard to play along with this. It totally interferes with listening. Luckily, there are other clips on RUclips.
I'm a hip hopper that was recently turned onto the dead by some shipmates. Holy fuck, the Dead is just hip-hop with a different sound. Same feeling, same struggle.
Is the album title and rhythm in this song kind of based on Working Man’s Blues by Merle Haggard? If you listen to that song, this song kind of sounds like a sped up version. On Acid.
Yeah. I still have the tape of that some girls left in my car a long time ago, which also has a much different and better version of China Cat Sunflower than I've heard anywhere.
This has been bothering me for a while. This was the only song on the album featuring Bob on lead vocal, and in fact Jerry sings lead toward the end. Jerry sang all the other songs except Easy Wind. Just wondering what happened.
It's really more like Jack Straw ... Garcia and Weir (and Phil?) are singing co-lead vocals through the first two verses, then they trade off some lines later. I wouldn't necessarily say this song "features" Bob on lead vocal.
Greatest band to ever exist hands down no questions asked. God bless the good ole grateful dead. RED AND WHITE! Blue suede shoes!!!!!!!!!
I'm Uncle Sam, how do you do?
I'm Uncle Sam, that's who I am.
This was a favorite in our bunk tent in Nam in 1970. We sang in 4 part harmonies. Me, a white guy, 2 black brothers, and an hispanic guy named Luis.
They're all gone now, except me.
This song and easy wind I would sing to my squad in iraq.
I used to listen to this over and over when I was a teenager. I always liked Bluegrass, but not many people did it. Love that banjo!
Same here!

This whole album is great from beginning to end and seriously underrated when considering the greatest albums of all time.
imho ... one of the very best albums of all time
Yeah i own it on vinyl. My favorite grateful dead album
@@ryansanders419 add American Beauty and you have two of the best.
Masterpiece album by the dead. Album had rock country bluegrass and the blues all on this album. Love Cumberland Blues has a great bluegrass sound to it. Song is phenomenal
RIP Robert Hunter. One of the great rock era lyricists of all time. And this album on my Top 100 Albums of all time.
Top 100! That is indeed praise!
It’s gonna be on my 100 album list. I’ve got a 100 favorite songs list on my channel. I bought this on 8 track when it first came out. I’d ride around in my 67 VW and be digging it!
Agreed, Hunter Garcia musical partnership is absolutely legendary
I never understood why this isn't too popular among fans!
Because the fan base changed drastically in the 1980s.......
Such a great jam - one of my all-time fave studio tunes by the band!
Love all their psychedelic lengthy tracks, but in my humble opinion working man's dead is their best album and one of my all time favorite albums!! I put it of equal greatness with dark side of the moon 🌚
After I first heard this song I said to my dad, “learn this on guitar.” I can now sing all the lyrics. This song has always been a family favorite
RIP Bob Hunter, thanks for the songs
Don’t worry guys the working man didn’t die!!! Here he sits, listening to the dead at 6 am, smoking a bowl getting ready to take the day head on!!
Sean Reardon that’s what I’m talkin about!!!
cheerz
Exactly...The Music Never Stops...👍🇺🇸🕺
One of their best songs...
Saw them on 7/31/71 at Yale Bowl New Haven,Ct the day before Jerry birthday. I am a Deadhead for 50yrs ☮️✌️💜🚂🍄💀🔥
How many times this album on my stereo : one thousand or more!
Dead head forever.
can't stop listening and it's going on fifty years. That's good music.
thatsgreat
Bern listening to the dead since my dad was spinning there records when I was a toddler. Keeps getting better:)
Now over 50 years, & STILL Boogeying Out!
Cumberland Blues is Top Notch from really their Best Vinyl.
#SoGrateful
One of the few Dead songs that's unequivocally better from the studio. No amount of extended soloing beats the banjo kicking during the chorus.
For me it’s Cumberland Blues and Brokedown Palace. Favorite live CB is from 5/2/70. So many different layers in those songs that I don’t think they could replicate live
Thier harmony is off the charts outstanding
AMAZING....BEST LIVE BAND EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Rudy Wilson best band ever!!
That's the same year I bought the album. I was 17 at the time at Atlantic City on the boardwalk
RIP Robert Hunter. Sad that I have only started to give the dead my attention. He lives on through his music and those it has touched!
It's never too late! :)
@@jimfrazzitta4218 Funny you liked and commented today! I threw Electric Koolaid Acid Test in my backpack to read at work today and just finished a chapter! Cheers brother!
You’ve got your work cut out for you
I didn’t get into the dead until after jerry died but he was the first time I cried when I heard an artist died.
Faun fact: Workingman's Dead was Hunter $ Thompson's fav. Dead album and still referred to the band as the Warlocks, their stage name when Hunter first saw them perform in SF.
I always loved this song. Just a great piece by The Dead.
RIP Robert Hunter. He passed to the 'fountain' yesterday. "Let it be known there is a fountain that was not made by the hands of men."
Man , I've been a fan of the Dead for about 40yrs. But I'll admit over the yrs I sorta drifted away. I have recently really started to listen to them again. Lol and it's been a pretty fun journey I wont deny !!
Love when the banjo comes in loud at 2:24.
I had tis album on cassette vynil and still got on cd
Probably my favourite song of The Dead.
RIP Claude A. Tucker boilermaker from Danville VA via Jefferson Ward
Happy 50th Anniversary on the release of Workingman's Dead, 6/14/1970.
I'm 18 it's ashamed not many people my age recognize real music like this!
+Grayson D I'm fifteen and I agree 100 percent.
+Grayson D No no no , you got it all wrong, people around our age group recognize The Dead, but only like 3 songs by them (Touch of Grey, Truckin', Casey Jones). Lotta poor man got the Cumberland Blues!
Walk the line
He cant win or lose too
Jerry always was tearin it up in the background
GREAT song - bluegrass AF keepin it real w jerry & the boys
Listen to that bass. Mr Lesh was a damn adventurous bass player.
He's still a good bass player but only WAS a good singer ;)
he is
Never liked the sound of that Richenbacher bass.
Listen to that banjo
@Jangler333 The Damn Adventurous Bass Player's Ball sounds even better.
Always like this song but never knew title until I happened upon it NOW. I LOVE COUNTRY DEAD.
I never saw the Dead in concert or anything....but I listen. Soooooo good
The hard, cold, fact is, the Dead didn't come out of the 70s sounding too good. Saw them first at the Fillmore in late '66. Amazing sights at the time. Girls wearing sign boards front and back, nothing else.
always love the lyrics
"make good money, 5 dollars a day
make any more I might move away"
I feel like those lyrics will always be relevant in some way
I can't stay here much longer, Melinda
The sun is getting high
I can't help you with your troubles
If you won't help with mine
I gotta get down
I gotta get down
Gotta get down to the mine
You keep me up just one more night
I can't stop here no more
Little Ben clock says quarter to eight
You kept me up till four
I gotta get down
I gotta get down
Or I can't work there no more
Lotta poor man make a five dollar bill
Will keep him happy all the time
Some other fellow's making nothing at all
And you can hear him cry
Can I go, buddy, can I go down
Take your shift at the mine
Gotta get down to the Cumberland mine
Gotta get down to the Cumberland mine
That's where I mainly spend my time
Make good money, five dollars a day
If I made any more I might move away
Lotta poor man got the Cumberland Blues
He can't win for losing
Lotta poor man got to walk the line
Just to pay his union dues
I don't know now, I just don't know
If I'm coming back again
I don't know now, I just don't know
If I'm coming back again
I don't know now, I just don't know
If I'm coming back again
used to listen to this album non stop with my komrade Joshua Broderick . if I could go back id run
such a cool tune.....i love many dead songs.....but this is my anthem
Absolute classic LP.
love this song...first time hearing the original recording. cool!
"I Gotta Get Down" to me the real inspiration of Disco.
This is a perfect representation of the deads bluegrassy pickin roots
I just don’t know, if im goin back again
If we're going to celebrate The Wall and OK Computer as Rock Opera, then we better add Workingman's Dead and American Beauty as the originators of the concept
Hell Yes..
imo Jerry's genius was in jug music not "acid rock". such a brilliant tune. captures the almost manic quality of "jug music"..yeah.they got it.
Love this. Gotta get down'
My first album . Just after it's release . I was making 5 dollars a day bailing hay .
If there was a nuclear war, the first thing I would do is listen to this song because why let imminent death get in the way of a good song
Right on. And no remastered version either. Wanna blow out some old Marantz speakers as they should
Hell yeah
2:30 fucking love that section...awesome
Really? I have been a fan for over 30 years, and I haven't ever heard that this wasn't a fan favorite. People go nuts for it at shows... even at shows when another band (Hot Buttered Rum is an amazing example) covers it.
Amazing that vocalists who can't sing can produce an entertaining harmony.
I,m still making a little less than five dollars a day and I,m hungry but I,m happy , thank you for Uploading :) QC
Such cool vocal harmonies!! 😎
Been listening to this ever since i lost my job
The best studio Dead.
wonderful
my dad and mom love this band
Well, they ARE America's second-greatest band ever, after the Beach Boys ;)
love the harmony

Good jam
Very sound advice for all of our Human Race.
Is the album title and rhythm in this song kind of based on Working Man’s Blues by Merle Haggard? If you listen to that song, this song kind of sounds like a sped up version. On Acid.
Real Deadhead album,man.
The intro is seven bars long. Them Grateful Dead!

"Make good money 5 dollars a day, make any more an I'd move away"
Jonny L honestly the most profoundly soul touching harmony, it is part of my DNA at this point.

The grateful dead.... Well, that's all of us then. Thankually, I forgot how to smell the correct words.

i need a car commercial damn it!! even a nice feeling of not adopting a pet.. why !!

Honestly the Europe 72 version is better, but this is still really good. :)
Yeah. I still have the tape of that some girls left in my car a long time ago, which also has a much different and better version of China Cat Sunflower than I've heard anywhere.
Came out in 1970, not 1969
The Europe 72 version blows this out of the water.
Europe 72 lacks the banjo. That's why the studio version is better, imho.

If the Dead made this a double album with American Beauty and kicked in a couple extra tracks it would rank up their with Beatles white album.
