How can you not be impressed by this? No pedals, no real special effects, just balls out rock and roll. Oh to have been there... the lead in with Amazing Journey, the building of tension, the release... from 6:10 or so out... jesus, I wouldn't be surprised if the amplifier had to go have a cigarette...
They did use modern equipment of the time, to get the sounds. Townshend used pedals, the Ox played with the treble alot. Doesn't take away from their brilliant musicianship.
And the best part about this, is that this song in the performance is undedited! Ive heard practically nearly every version of Live At Leeds, and the bootleg version of this song (Live At Leeds: Complete), is the same as all the final releases!
Deep Purple Made in Japan and Rush All the World's a Stage and Exit Stage Left not too far behind. Wish All the World's a Stage had better sound quality. But, this is the best.
What a brilliant masterpiece absolutely awesome live album. They sounded so much better live you can really hear what a powerful sound they had shame that sound wasn't on the studio album's they did.. Pete Townshend what a genius song writer.. Anyone who witnessed them live at Leeds you are one truly lucky person..
@@catmechanic1261 Magic Bus was actually Entwistles least favorite song to play because of it's simple beat and he could never get an opportunity to stretch his fingers and do his thing as he does in other songs performed live.
Keith Moon was the artillery of The Who. When he died, they never regained that hurricane-force sound; they were just going through the motions. Not their fault and, to their credit, they kept trying, but it was gone. Phenomenal band.
As a little boy, not even 10 years old yet, maybe more like 7 or 8 years old, The Who, Live At Leeds, was one of the first classic rock/hard rock albums I ever owned and I owned it on 8 track cassette. Too me that was like a blast from the past and a real treat, a real treat !!! However even before then in 1975, when I was only 6 years old, I bought my first KISS album, KISS Alive 1. I was only 6 years old at the time !!! Oh I still love The Who, but I love KISS just that much more !!!
I'm trying to tone down the volume of music I listen to in the car, but then this came on and oh well. The ears are ringing again. The variety of sounds they wring out of a guitar, bass, and drums is just amazing.
I dont recall when I first heard a lot of songs. I remember this one as clear as day. Hauling down I405 through LA at midnight. My only wish was my stereo went louder.
Just who else but Moony could produce two such stunning drum solos as the ostensible mere background to such fabulous tunes. He dominates - period, and that's saying one helluva lot when you know he had Daltrey, Entwistle and Townsend on stage.
Prove that you don't need a freakin' orchestra, 20 aditional musicians, 5 guest artists, sound effects and a stadium to make the greatest live rock show ever!
it is not ironic..they are quite a bit older..the drummer and bass player have both been dead for many years ..fuck off! do you hear what they are playing here? this is when they were all much younger..how does YOUR band sound?..if you know more than 3 chords , i'll still bet your band sucks..and based on your comment, I am quite sure that the lyrics are also crap. @@landerryan1485
They could play that riff until the end of time. What power. So in sync with each other. They listened and reacted, predicted and had some serious ESP going on. Love how Keith and Pete react off each other.
Around 1970 a world-famous Jazz drummer named Philly Joe Jones attended a Who gig. Moony revered him, to such an extent that at the end of the show he asked Philly Joe for advice as to how to improve. Philly Joe told him, "Man, don't change a thing!"
This is the best version of Sparks I've ever heard! Is The Who the best studio band ever? No. Are they among the best concert bands....if not, THE best? Absolutely.
+jigs9600able hey, I have a vinyl recording of the "Who Live at Leeds". It does not sound the same as this youtube one. The one I have is so much better, that every time I listen to it it blows my brain. ROCK!!!

One of my favorite drum parts ever, Keith literally attacks his set with fills and an avalanche of flurries...some drummers are technically better, many play faster but does anyone play with the passion and spontaneity heard here? I say no.
The frustrating thing about Townshend is his inconsistency. This is by FAR the best live recording of Sparks ever. In my opinion it contains the most powerful break in rock history (In the break listen to Townshend slide up and down the neck with Entwistle echoing him in tandem. Genius). BUT, Townshend has NEVER been able (or doesn’t care) to recreate that break. I’ve listened to EVERY live recording of Tommy or songs from Tommy and Townshend has never done that break the same way, and never as good as the Live At Leeds performance.
I play this whenever I need to remind myself of what Rock and Roll really is/was. What a piece of music. Learn kids....LEARN!!!!!! If you have a short fucking attention span....cut to 3:15 and go from there.

The Who originally wanted to use the Hull concert the day before to use as a live album. Now that YT has those tapes, there's no comparison (especially with this song). Not that this was originally released on the original Decca/Polydor album in 1970, but Hull has no energy, not like this.
