  • 2017 marks Buddy Rich’s Centennial. In order to properly pay tribute to him and his legacy and to celebrate her father’s music, Cathy is re-introducing Buddy Rich Band Classics like “Love for Sale,” “Mercy, Mercy,” “Birdland,” “Nutville,” “Dancing Men” and her hit “The Beat Goes On.” There are plans in the works for a star on the Palm Springs Walk of Fame, the Las Vegas Walk of Fame, and a year’s celebration will commence on April 7 when the Jazz at Lincoln Center orchestra has a two night tribute to BuddyRich’s music under the guidance of Wynton Marsalis with Ali Jackson on drums. The Buddy Rich Band will be touring throughout the year punctuated by numerous special events.
Cathy Rich’s musical career began virtually at birth. Born into a musical dynasty as the only child of jazz and drumming icon Buddy Rich, Cathy has carved her own path in music history.
One of the youngest people ever to be signed by a major record label, Cathy began her recording career at the age of twelve singing “The Beat Goes On” live with her father’s band on the album Big Swing Face and performing it with Buddy and his band on the Tonight Show. That recording has since been used in countless commercials, remixes, and feature films.
After her father’s passing, Cathy switched gears and devoted her life to preserving the legacy she was born into. It was Buddy’s wish to keep his band and music alive for young people in future generations and it has been her mission to make sure her father’s wish came true.
Creator and producer of the Buddy Rich Memorial Concert series, Cathy changed the face of the drumming industry by having the greatest drummers in the world sit in with Buddy’s band, playing his music. Everyone from Phil Collins to Billy Cobham to Max Roach have been a part of these historical events

Buddy Rich was one of the biggest personalities in show business. It was a better time with greats around like BR.

The guy is a really good drummer and he is not trying to replace Buddy Rich. Guys you need to stop bashing him as a drummer he is very good . I do wish he would do something about his hair , it looks kind of crazy but hey he can live his life anyway he wants

I don't know why so many people are so negative and hateful towards Greg. Everyone knows that there will only be one Buddy Rich and you can't compare anyone to him. Greg is a great drummer in his one wright and those who say he isn't just aren't listening. Sure he hits hard and is flamboyant and plays a lot of solos, and kind of makes it more about him, but the skill is for sure there, i wish i could play half of what he does.

I seriously doubt Buddy wanted his band to be a ghost band. And I KNOW that Buddy would not be happy with the freak Potter at the drums in said band. There is NO "Buddy Rich Band" without Buddy Rich. Period.

True. I heard MR. Spang-Spang-a-lang Peter Erskine play, He is the opposite of Potter as to not being right.I was standing onstage with Cathy in Los Angeles, and she wanted to do "The Beat Goes On" Weckl was the drummer, they were at end of rehearsals going to dinner, Dave said to her he did not want to lay it and walked off. I SHOULD HAVE sat on his drums and told Kathy to break the chart out, but, I did noting, I regret that day. Then there is Steve smith. Now Steve IS the closest and best to Buddy, but no matter what, his solo's have Steve Smith written all over them. I have heard others, the Buddy Rich Tribute shows with all the top end drummers all come down to Buddy's Band playing Buddy's charts, with drummers who do not sound at all like Buddy, nor do they try.

I would not want to "try" to sound like Buddy. That would just open you up to more hate for being a copycat wannabe.

Big Swing Face, You're right about what you said about Buddy that he didn't want his band to be a ghost band, but, in a way, you are wrong about Greg Potter because,,,Greg practices Buddy's tunes very close in sound and talent but when he plays live, he seems to be having to much fun playing because he is very gifted and he plays over the band too much. I watched him for the first time last week and he was even playing too much when the sax players were soloing. That's RUDE, but I don't think that he thinks about that when he's playing. Cathy or someone like me, " IF I WAS THERE" Needs to tell him that so he doesn't get hated instead of loved. I watched the musicians face when he played and I watched their faces when Dave Weckl played and it was day and night. Dave played his own style but played with the utmost respect for the band and their expressions showed with smiles of relief and appreciation. That's the sad part about Greg's playing. Greg sounds as close to Buddy as I've heard from ANY DRUMMER TO THIS DAY. He needs to be told diplomatically or it will not end well for him and that would be a shame. With that being said. I love his playing ability. I wish that I had it but my days are over. I'm 67 now and have a brand new 1972 Slingerland Buddy Set with all pretty new Paiste Giant Beat Cymbals but I don't have Greg's gift. What a shame.. Maybe in the Afterlife with Jesus if it is allowed.

Why are your days over? I hate hearing that crap. You do realize you don’t have to be in the 99th percentile of all drummers in the world to be able to enjoy playing the instrument and push your own boundaries as a musician as well as the art as a whole. Stop comparing yourself. When you’re at the kit, is just you and the kit, no one else.
These guys aren’t born this way, they spend hours upon hours, days upon days practicing religiously.
