My favorite part: "Well that sucks...man, that is really a bummer...YEAH DUDE GO GO GO!" You're the best, Macky. It's always refreshing when you run in to the true Mountain Bikers who are positive no matter what.
I broke a middle chainring on a climb, after getting stung down my throat by a wasp, trying to get back to the car before my airway closed. Couldn't believe it! Great attitude about it Macky, keep it up :)
Fun fact: When you go into Yuba Expeditions in Downieville, they actually have a collection of broken chainrings in their shop. They also equip their entire demo fleet with MRP bash guards. Something to consider adding for next year. Still damn impressive results.
Sorry you guys had the mechnicals and didn't get the results you'd hoped for, but still very impressive. Kudos to you both for keeping a positive attitude about it all.
Absolute blast of a video. While I know that you bother were disappointed in how it turned out, to be honest, I took what happened to you both as learning experiences that anything can happen to anyone on any ride. Glad you are both well and healthy after it. Sounds like a really cool race. Thanks for the very cool insight.
Bro... what a bummer. You were crushing the Downieville race too,. It is super cool to see that you would have made the top 10 in the All Mnt Cat. I am psyced to follow the rest of your race season. I have feeling that good things are coming your way.
Crazy.. In the last coupe of year I snapped a couple of chains, broke 2 cassettes, 3 freehubs from 2 different brands and a crank arm... But a broken chain ring is a first for me. Having said that, they last me about 300 to 500 km before they are worn out, so I just bought myself a nice steel one.
Woooow, that's nuts. The craziest mechanical I ever had, snapped a pedal off on the spindle right next to the crank (Was a jump to flat). You still seemed in good spirits, so you win. I, admittedly, would have been a pissed off mess. LOL
New subscriber here, catching up on your awesome vids. Dang Macky you are an absolute BEAST on a bike! 💪💪 But even more impressive is you live your mantra...'Be more awesome!' Just seconds after absolutely eating it, to pop up and encourage the passing rider?.... that's ACE in my book. Thanks for being a great example of attitude, poise and diligent commitment to the sport. Thanks for living what you preach and sharing it with the world! God bless you and yours always! ,
Well DAMN! I've seen bent\broken teeth, bent rings, but thats a new one. Stoked you weren't hurt badly and got a do over, even if it was just for piece of mind still better than DNF.
When I predicted "full send," I didn't think it was going to be in the form of sending your chainring back to Shimano after it broke! Bummer. To place 6th, when you were having to pass that many riders, is impressive. I would also question whether mentally you were pushing yourself to the extent you would if you knew it was going to count for something. Either way....nice riding, and you both did very well given the circumstances. That's the part of racing that sucks...you gear up for something, spend a lot of time and effort, and it can be over in the blink of an eye due to something out of left field like that. Looking forward to the next adventure!
Ahhh always a bummer with equipment issues, but Macky at least you got to start again. Somehow I think that chainring will be a topic of conversation for quite some time LOL! Syd...bummer about the two flats... it seems to be a guessing game with tires, but glad that both of you finished and neither got hurt. So what's next?? As always, thanks for sharing!
Please, if you have some of the small pieces, send them with the broken piece. It will help define what type of break it is. Maybe low cycle fatigue? I doubt it but that's why shimano wants to the part back. They want to know not only how it failed but where exactly it failed. Retired engineer here. Sorry for geeking out.
Same deal here, it actually looks like, with multiple pieces... its a cast chainring and I can't even fathom Shimano doing that so it makes no sense. 7075 from billet wouldn't do that. 6061 definitely wouldn't do that but they don't use that for chain rings. Suppose it depends on the heat treatment but that doesn't seem in line with 7075 as far as I know it, at all. It would deform but never shatter like that unless it was cast and cast is 'cheap' and 'ridgid' but garbage.
wow was that a perfect storm of pedal strike and a chainring strike all under load that caused that, be interested to know if you hear back from shimano.
I'm no expert, but this might become more common with 1 x 12 drivetrains. The smaller teeth, and less support on the ring mean more flex and less beef. You could add a bash guard if there's a way to mount it. I'm sure you could get a mount fabricated on too.
Since I started watching your guys videos, I want to fix my mb and hit the trails at the dam that's by where I leave. My bike needs a complete overhual which sucks cus I'm not working right now
to bad about the "ring" but all in all your an Animal! :D Glad that we got to see you race to the finish line ;-) keep up the good work you two and thumbs up from Denmark keep them good videos coming.
Reminds me of the quote from Esther Dyson: "Always make new mistakes." The shattered chainring is a new one for sure! So, giving any thought to mounting a bash guard? I see the ISCG-05 tabs are there waiting for you.
We run a bash guard on our Enduro bikes but we haven't had chain drop issues with the new xtr so thought we could do without the weight. Alas... 😂 Also not sure what would have happened with this hit even with a bash guard...
Yeah, I'm a "belt AND suspenders" kinda guy, but I'm not a racer. When I get a bike with ISCG mounts, I put a guard on it just because I can, not necessarily because I'm bashing my chainring on rocks all the time.
Must be the Go Pro camera effect, but I can't see any rocks tall enough to grab that ring. It would have hit the chain first...could you see impact can on any links? Did the chain split on its own from the impact, or did you have to "break" it to remove it? In any event, those are definitely times to be proud of, both of you! Nice work.
The chain did split on impact... In fact one of the actual chain links was snapped in half, so we are pretty sure he hit something although to be honest we aren't sure exactly which rock 😂
If they just check the weight of the bike, what stops from just adding ballast to the bike and then remove it for the second day and replace it with bulkier tyres/wheels? You would have less rotating mass and less rolling resistance this way.
One takeaway I have watching this, plus the BC Bike Race vids of you and BK, is don't save weight on tires! Too many flats, too much lost time. And I'm not flaming them, but any chance this is related to the Vittoria choice? Any stats on flat rate of various types/brand of tires?
Most brands offer similar casing options with different tire treads. So I suspect flat rates are similar on XC casing tires, regardless of brand or tread pattern. To be honest, my flat in this race was due to extremely poor line choice (not clearing a little gap), so the XC casing didn't stand a chance. These are the choices you make in racing! If you watched Paul's videos from BC as well, you'll see that he didn't flat but he was running Enduro tires (since his sponsor doesn't make xc tires) and he suffered a penalty for it on the climbs 🤷♀️
It's possible, but hard to say for sure. And given how hard it hit I think I would have worried about the bash guard transferring that force into the frame...
I refuse to have my bike without a bash guard. I never considered myself aggressive but I have a habit of looking down the trail not at the contact patch and obstacles underneath.
I have watched the video twice, it didn’t look like you crashed that hard, and you would think crashing hard enough to break a chainring it would be hard enough to break parts of you also. Good video though thanks to both of you.
Same happened to Manuel Fumic (Cannondale Factory Racing) on 1st stage of Tankwa Trek 2020 o_O (~Feb 2020) i.imgur.com/18VTJHN.jpg Those chainrings are light, but also fragile
Don't really care for the center lock chainrings. A 104 bcd would probably have bent before breaking. And why do we need yet another standard in the first place?
I admit, I paused when you showed the damage. . . That is the wildest mechanical I've ever seen.
This is the reason your sponsors should be pleased. A major mechanical and you are encouraging your competitors to go go go. Thanks for the video
My favorite part: "Well that sucks...man, that is really a bummer...YEAH DUDE GO GO GO!" You're the best, Macky. It's always refreshing when you run in to the true Mountain Bikers who are positive no matter what.
Shimano will put the chain ring on the wall and underneath will say, Macky did this 😎
You two both had great attitudes through a tough race day. Glad you weren’t hurt on that broken chain ring wreck.
Love your videos. I’m a baby in cycling and am still waiting to get my mountain bike but I get lost in your videos. Quality content.
I broke a middle chainring on a climb, after getting stung down my throat by a wasp, trying to get back to the car before my airway closed. Couldn't believe it! Great attitude about it Macky, keep it up :)
Good job Syd and sorry about the mechanical Macky. That Redemption run looked smooth. Podium for Downieville 2020!! 😉
That's what happens in beast mode!! 💪 at least no injuries👏🤘
Fun fact: When you go into Yuba Expeditions in Downieville, they actually have a collection of broken chainrings in their shop. They also equip their entire demo fleet with MRP bash guards. Something to consider adding for next year. Still damn impressive results.

Wow... Looks like an insanely fun weekend of racing!
Makes me want to go try downieville...🤔

Superb effort in spite of the technical difficulties, guys! Congratulations!
Great run, great video! I really enjoy watching you both.
I love the awesome videos! the more I watch them the more I want to race. keep it up, guys
Thank you for this learning video. Love your aditudes. Glad your ok. Always fun first.
Dude.... The takeaway here.. when poop hits the fan, its a learning experience and just have fun!.
You 2 are the beast at this.
The best part of the video is looking Syd yawning and leaning against Machy. It was so cute.
That chainring needs to be made into a trophy.

Thanks! And welcome!
I live in NorCal and have never done DownieVille. It's a shame! Need to make the trip soon.
Great race despite the mechanical. Looking forward to the next race video!
Newcomer to the channel been binge watching now you got me motivated to bike again
first person to know who broke a SHIMANO XTR CHAIN RING. go Macky!
Well DAMN! I've seen bent\broken teeth, bent rings, but thats a new one. Stoked you weren't hurt badly and got a do over, even if it was just for piece of mind still better than DNF.
Forgot to add your vids are my favorite, can't wait for the next vid!
it's always crazy to see the speed difference between the classes. you were pushing it hard and it seemed like everyone else wasn't even trying lol
Yeah, I don't think those new puzzle chainrings will catch on.
When I predicted "full send," I didn't think it was going to be in the form of sending your chainring back to Shimano after it broke! Bummer. Good point about the cyclelogical effect of knowing it won't really count.
@@aerialheights5680 .. I see what you did there, and I like it.
@@willbros1499 Thanx but I got it from their other video about Sid's new Hardline build, I saw it in the background - lol
You have gotten the SRAM Eagle chainring 😂😂
Nice job guys! This is on my list to do someday.
Holly Crap Nuts how it's just Snapped Macky 😕 bloody Rocks in the way so glad they let you re run 👌 and you was ok buddy 😜👌
It might have already had a crack or fault from an earlier hit and finally stressed apart.
That carbon Portal looks great. I'm happy on the alloy version but sort of wish I'd waited.
Breaking a chainring, wow! Glad you are ok, that could have been catastrophic.
Great video you are the best
wow chain ring wrecking machine man!
Macky is so PRO, he can change his chainrin's teeth count during a race, to get "the optimal" ratio ha ha ha
😂
Way to go. NorCal is awesome
I did not know that was even possible! That's freaking insane! Sorry that went badly.😔
Please, if you have some of the small pieces, send them with the broken piece. It will help define what type of break it is. Maybe low cycle fatigue? I doubt it but that's why shimano wants to the part back. They want to know not only how it failed but where exactly it failed.

Don't worry, sent the whole thing!

11:40 No worries Macky, we'll get a petition going to rename that climb ;-p

I’d mount the chainring for a trophy.
That has to be a chain ring failure from a manufacturing fault. It's about the craziest mechanical I have ever seen.
The rider at 10:48 is my bike mechanic at clayton bikes
lol that DH race is a Super D
Pretty much!
I like this format of racing, not sure if we have anything like this in the UK. just a shame you got a mechanical you had a good result.
Gnarly. Crazy that the impact broke both the chainring and the chain. Maybe a bashguard for the future, just in case?
iv seen a few bent chain rings before, never seen one that snapped like that tho.
to bad about the "ring" but all in all your an Animal! :D Glad that we got to see you race to the finish line ;-) keep up the good work you two and thumbs up from Denmark keep them good videos coming.
WOW I can’t believe you broke the chain ring😱. It would have been an amazing race without that and without Syd getting the flat😬

Everyone's reaction is similar to seeing a broken bone sticking out of a leg. That is crazy though.
That broken chainring HAS TO become Your van's front badge! Thumb up if You agree.
12:22 Refuse! - Badge and/or rock-paper-chainring argument settling requisite ;-p
How dose the chain ring break but just not break but at like the worst possible moment but glad no injuries and god job
Dudes, that video may be more helpful to many viewers than your successful events. Good Spirits! You cannot be more awesome than this event.
Note to self: chainguards really help.
Did the same thing once was strange still to this day i dont know how or why lol
No fear and breaking gears.

That would be cheating... Soooo the honor system I guess!
Do you two have a site you recommend that gives all races in the west? I’ve found bits and pieces but nothing really solid. Thanks. 🚲🤘🏼
Unfortunately there isn't one. We've looked too.
SYD and MACKY dang oh well thanks.
Aren't the XTR rings carbon with hardened carbon for the teeth? That would make sense on the break. That has got to be the rarest mechanical ever!
So 4 Oz iscg would have helped ?
So what do you expect the comparative results would be if you rode this on the Hardline *Carbon?*
There's enough pedaling and it's super fast and there's nothing very big, so I'm guessing the Portal is faster.
@@sydandmacky ok, so even with the 3VO sus design it's still logical that less travel climbs better I guess.
But how much, I wonder?
One takeaway I have watching this, plus the BC Bike Race vids of you and BK, is don't save weight on tires! Too many flats, too much lost time. And I'm not flaming them, but any chance this is related to the Vittoria choice? Any stats on flat rate of various types/brand of tires?

hmm....well I have seen the exact chain ring break in the same way recently. At the time I was thinking fluke but now I'm wondering.
Mackys a beast! What's that a 34t xtr chain ring?
Always!
3:49 was freakin dangerous
You think a bashguard would have helped?
It's possible, but hard to say for sure. And given how hard it hit I think I would have worried about the bash guard transferring that force into the frame...
You just made a case for the front derailleur m8
I've seen a guy finish the last 20km on a ride with only 3/4 of a chain ring.
Damn same thing happend to me couple weeks ago hah
I broke a crank arm! And it was on a road bike :-)
Wow i thought bash guard was too much
What is the camera set up you use?
Check out our gear page: www.sydandmacky.com/gear
I broke an XT 8000 96 BCD because the chainring bolts were loose.
👍
Nice, is the race good for amateurs because I live 5 hours away?
There are lots of amateurs who do Downieville, but we wouldn't recommend it as a first race!
Hey guys would you ever consider doing this on a hard tail
Probably not, since they are not Blake Samson.
There are a number of people who do, but we like our full sus bikes (you can go faster)!
woahhhhh.
Chainring guard
Time to slow down Syd......oh no you can’t (pro don’t do that) 😄.
Did you ever say how much your bike weighed?
At the very end!

Perhaps you over tightened the chainring bolts? Edit: you dont have any!
Correct 😁
The results just show you in 8th place with nothing about unofficial results. Seems pretty official to me!
Weird... They said they weren't going to count it...
Don't really care for the center lock chainrings. A 104 bcd would probably have bent before breaking. And why do we need yet another standard in the first place?
