A Glimpse at the History of Venetian Masks

- Any visit to Venice is filled with ornately painted masks. These are more than just colorful souvenirs - they come with a story. Throughout the centuries, these masks have always been a big part of Carnevale celebrations, the weeks-long Mardi Gras festivities leading up to Lent - and high-class people have traditionally put them on to hide their faces while they are out and about, doing less-than-respectable things.
Join me now at a mask shop in the heart of Venice for a peek at the history of these masks - from the 17th century, when doctors used them to treat victims of the plague, all the way to the 1970s, when local hippies incorporated them into their wild outfits.

I’m in here in Venice to do some guidebook research. If you’re heading this way too, you can pick up the latest edition of my guidebook at store.rickstev.... Happy travels!
I was in a specialised mask shop in Venice just 2 months ago and they explained me the exact same story. So nice of hearing this story again. I feel like being there again.
Wow these masks are very beautiful
Hi Rick, ! Thank you for so much insights during that simple video ! Take care !
The Carnival is one of my favorite European celebrations (so yes, I watched your recent video on that). I asked my parents for a half mask a few years ago when they went to Venice and they bought me 2! Love the artistry that goes into making them and the history behind it!
Assassins Creed 2
Boris Brejcha
Ofcourse
Seriously beautiful.
I bought an authentic carnevale mask in Venice earlier this year at a shop called Ca'Macana. Wish I could have bought one of every kind!
beautiful history
Hahaha, I would love to have the masks culture comeback in modern-day. So I can mask up and go and do thing I was not suppose to do
This comment aged nicely
Your wish has been granted.
Careful what you wish for
Soooo cool!! Got here after Martin G Spataro's "Teatro Magico". And I don't regret at all! Great upload!
Thank you for the beautiful explanation of the masks. I love you. You have broadened my view of the world. You are the best.
I needed this for my class, thank you so much!
Loved this!
I am a collector of masks not really this type more vintage rubber Halloween or monster masks but Venetian masks are so versatile and beautiful

I need to buy a mask like this!! How and where ?! I wanna do this for Halloween!
The venetian mask was explained to me while visiting Venice. I had no clue what it's real purpose was. If I hadn't gone there, I would just associate them with Mardi Gras! You travel, you learn!
I got one there a few years ago!
came here during Corona just to check if these could work now :D
We went to that shop and bought several hats and masks and a cloak.
Usually what tourists do is walking inside a mask shop without saying hi, touching stuff, taking pictures, and then leave without saying bye.
I go to venice
Fidelio
yet he did this on Cinco De Mayo
This isn’t quite accurate. I have been to this shop many times. The man who makes the masks in that shop is very famous.
And how much of the masks in Venice are made in China?
なんか、闇深そう
I like the content, but the camera constantly spinning is making me dizzy and nauseous. I can't finish the video. :(
Made in China all. Real hand made Venitian mask no longer exist.
Most are plastic and not papier maché.
👀NO👂🏽NO👄👅NO
They’re so creepy to me
The masks are better in Florence IMO.
Hi Rick. Going to Venice in two weeks, and the ol' Rog and chain was asking about the history of masks (you know how they are), this video perfectly satiated my Rog in under 3 minutes.
Keep up the good work, you earned a subscriber today and I don't subscribe very often if I say so myself. Keep it cool, keep it easy.
