@ Ephrons still exist, but no one will ever invest in their script. We've had the same casting directors for ages. Hollywood is all corporate now and they're afraid to death of the word "risk", God forbid they invest in anything other predictable, all of this compounded by the generation being too lazy and far too unwilling to do any much more than become copyist. It'll be another 10-20 years before we see this art in action.
For those who loved this movie, you should definitively watch The Shop around the Corner, which is the original. Hard to think of a combination of original and remake of a story that are both such as delight to watch.
I miss Meg Ryan. Her ability to beguile us was a wonderful thing. Hollywood killed her career, just because on one stupid TV appearance. All of us owe her an apology.
You should really watch "The Shop Around the Corner" (1940) from Ernst Lubitsch with Margaret Sullavan and James Stewart if you like this. There is a scene just like it and the movie is full with witty arguments and so beautifully done.
"Is Kind and Funny He's got the most Wonderful sense Of Humour.. Well if He's Not Here He Has a Reason because There's Not a Cruel Or Careless Bone in His Body.."
I remember I watched this movie 5 time (four of them alone) . Aside from being a big fan of Meg Ryan , I love the storyline of this movie . It felt real since Kathleen character is common and her expectations for a man and love is what we all expects.
The whole purpose of places like Starbucks is for people with no decision-making ability whatsoever to make six decisions just to buy one cup of coffee. Short, tall, light, dark, caf, decaf, low-fat, non-fat, etc. ~ Tom Hanks.
Thats funny how u felt about Starbucks people, when I was homeless for nearly 8 months living in a tent n a canyon I wud get up around 5:30 am go to Starbucks to charge my phone have a cup of coffee and sit and watch all the customers line up right out the door every day of the week Monday to Friday and it was like watching the same people every day come n, they could have gone to McDonald's for cheaper coffee and no lines 😀 😄 but no it had to be Starbucks I purposely did it just to c people's reactions routine and it was funny, by being their every day I made friends with the help who gave me food and free coffee when I was broke a experience of worth having I always thought.
@@josephcavaliere9772 I'm glad that you were able to get back on your feet. I used to work at a Target that had a Starbucks inside, during my break I would get a Tall Soy Late. Sometimes the lines were long but by the time I got to the register the barista would have my coffee ready, that was nice!
@@V.E.R.O. Is it really ironic? They've run out of things to sell online and now they have to find more ways to sell. I don't think it'll be a major focus though, it's as much a PR exercise as anything else. For sure they do want to replace your grocery stores.
@@Raison_d-etre They're selling the same things as online, food, books and electronic gadgets. I'm not sure I could trust food produced by Amazon, who knows what they put in there to cut losses and maximize profits. I prefer to get my vegetables and fruits at Latino markets, they rot at a natural pace. Meanwhile the bag of green apples my cousin gave 6 weeks ago are still green.
The setting is Cafe Lalo at 201 W. 83rd Street. I went in there when I was walking around looking for Zabar's in that area. Ended up having lunch and it was fun to see some stills of "You've Got Mail" posted on the window. It's mostly known for cakes and pies, but I had a bowl of soup, and a sandwich/salad plate. The tables were too close to each other, but my food was very good and affordable. A cup of plain coffee is only $2.00. Soup w/ bread was $6. Sandwich with a small salad was $12.
I like that they dealt with the reticence that some people felt (back in 1998!) about plunging into an affair online. Also, they refer back to "Pride and Prejudice" and 1950's classics like Hepburn and Tracy in the (then high-tech!) "Desk Set". Dealing with love amidst machines, work and impersonality. I don't think anyone has done it as well as Mike Nichols did in "Working Girl". Anyone recall the '80's...when we all thought we'd get a piece of the pie??!
Gwynhwyfar Pendragon I met my first boyfriend online but I was just a teenager...now as an adult I want to meet someone the old fashioned way because I haven’t had any success with online dating.
My first online date was in 1998, back then it was seen as weird for people to meet online, it was kind of a stigma lol So people who "met" online and ended up dating would lie about how they met.
I love what she says about 22 year old girls and the whole "cocktail waitress" thing. It is a shame that people in my generation do that be they male or female. Anyway, another thing to point out is that people regardless of what they tell themselves, ALWAYS feel bad after saying, thinking, and doing something mean, because they all have consciences.
I used to think that was true. I had an ex that used to say mean, and sometimes very cruel things to me. (that's why they're an ex) Worse, they tried to gaslight me on top of it. They became angry if I was bothered by their verbal abuse, and declared I was the one with the problem. They claimed it didn't mean anything, they were just letting off steam, so there was no reason to feel bad, let alone apologize. People can delude themselves to justify their bad behavior without any remorse. I just realized your comment is a decade old! Hopefully, you've never had to learn this the hard way, like I did.
@@Mybpeterson Hi, I have experienced narcissistic abuse myself in the past years since my original comment. Though to be fair, I don't find the character of Kathleen Kelly to be narcissistic. I find Joe Fox to be though.

This movie has the BEST conversation, voice over, ever! Humerous, intelligent, heartful. Can watch over and over. Perfection.
The way he delivers “that’s my cue”. He’s such a gifted actor
Very cutting line from Meg Ryan, just prior: 'You are nothing but a suit.' She looks like she knows she went a bit too far immediately after...

What TV appearance was that?
Because she dated with Russell Crowe during her marriage with Dennis.
No idea what you’re talking about.
The acting by Hanks is sublime. The flash of pain across his face as he feels the pain of her insult, her words cutting like a sword, is Oscar worthy.
Bless the memory of Nora Ephron.

One of my fave scenes from the film.

There are still many here in Canada. But sadly we are an exception to the rule, as Canadians on average read more than most in developed countries.
