Sadness cant help touching the memories. Sometimes, everything is fine, but we become sad. Sadness can't stop herself
You got it wrong. She wants to touch memories because we get sad about how things were happier in the past. Sadness touches happy memories for the greater good. We need sadness in order to be happy. Our sadness naturally will lead to happier times. That was the premise of the movie.
It started the first night in SF when her mother asked Riley to be a “happy girl” to help out the family. Riley repressed her natural sadness at leaving her previous home & friends. But this made her unable to feel happiness. After some inappropriate emotions, she became depressed and was unable to feel any emotions (when the control board went dark). I love that - it is exactly what depression feels like.
Only after she experienced her authentic sadness, could she feel again. Her core memories became deeper
Bing Bong's sacrifice symbolizes that moment when we accept that our childhood reached an end and I think that's very beautiful.
You nailed it
I like how the film actually admits that it's good, even necessary to feel sad sometimes, or at least to be honest about feeling sad. Sometimes you need laughter to get you out of a sad mood, sometimes you need to cry a little
or a lot :)
Totally, I actually love to cry because it makes me feel so good.
It really is a great message. For kids and for parents.
It's an old saying that tears bring healing
This is a movie that should be played in schools, just to let kids know that it's okay to cry.
I NEEDED this movie as a kid. Atleast I was lucky enough to see it as it came out when I was 16 and at one of the worst points of depression in my life, it hit me hard, and remains to thus day my favorite pixar film, A Title only ever held by Wall-E and Toy Story 2 before then
When I was a school counselor I had middle school students watch this and talked about out empathy, expression, etc.
@@isaywhateveriwantandyougot7421
What kind of movies?
@@isaywhateveriwantandyougot7421
I don't see how it has the same message though. Inside Out goes deep into the message and it's pretty entertaining. Both of those movies are great though, don't get me wrong.
@@isaywhateveriwantandyougot7421
Oh, sorry I think there's a misunderstanding. Why'd you say Ratatouille then
As a therapist, I love this movie. They really did their homework. I think with the parents' emotions--anger and sadness being in command--I think it's much more nuanced with them. As Joy learned in the movie, the emotion of Sadness is really what allows you to have empathy for other people and I think that was more the Mom's dominating emotion, whereas with Dad, I think it was...well, not aggressive but assertiveness. Essentially, all aspects of the core emotions that develop and expand as we get older.
One of my favorite touches that they did was when the console went grey and they couldn't impact her emotionally at all. That, to me, is an excellent example of depression. A lot of people think depression is just sadness taken to an extreme but in my experience, depression is better described as being numb, distant, and unable to really feel anything. So, Sadness was the only one that could take that thought out of her head because of that empathy emotion---she cares for her parents even if she feels like she's lost everything else. They were, essentially, her rock. And I love little touches like that
Also, her clothes represent Riley's emotional state:
-as a baby, when her only emotion was Joy, she was wrapped in a yellow blanket,
-when she fails at hockey cuz' hockey island is out of order, she's wearing a red jersey and throws the hocky stick at the ground angrily,
-when Joy and Sadness are locked out of the control center and the other three are scrambling to pose as Joy, she's wearing a colourful shirt with the colours red, pink and green
And finally, my favourite example:
-when she's getting on the bus and has no access to her emotions, she's wearing black, just like the control panel
I saw this movie soon after I recovered from my own bought of depression, and that's what I took away from that moment in the movie. It was a perfect example to me of depression. You lose your joy, lose your ability to feel sad, and then just go numb.
@M S. Oh, really perceptive observation! So glad you mentioned that. I didn’t pick up on the colors
Yep, each person had a different "management" team. I thought it was hilarious that the bus driver near the end had ONLY anger avatars and the nerdy kid went into 'red alert' mode when Riley was nice to him. I laughed so hard at that.
Not so fun fact: the voice break as Bingbong says ‘take her to the moon for me, okay?’ Was very real. The voice actor was in tears as he delivered his last line
also not the original scene...original was more bleak
Richard Kind delivering that line brings me to tears every time!
Aww i hope we get to see some other form of bingbong
We need a sequel where Riley is all grown up and is an astronaut.
@@Pinkielover what was the original?
This will always remain one of the greatest movies Pixar has ever produced.
Joy x 2 = Ecstasy, Joy + Sadness = Melancholy/Nostalgia, Joy + Disgust = Intrigue, Joy + Fear = Surprise, Joy + Anger = Righteousness
Sadness x 2 = Despair, Sadness + Disgust = Self-Loathing, Sadness + Fear = Anxiety, Sadness + Anger = Betrayal
Disgust x 2 = Prejudice, Disgust + Fear = Revulsion/Phobia, Disgust + Anger = Loathing
Fear x 2 = Terror, Fear + Anger = Hatred
Anger x 2 = Rage
All islands shutting down = Depression
Jesus ur everywhere with this :/
This is EMOTIONALLY genius.
I saw a therapist analyse the movie and I found it interesting when they said that there’s a kind of joy that can only be experienced in moments of extreme sadness, as pictured when they all hug we she comes back home.
I started the film rooting for Joy and getting annoyed at sadness but ended up feeling the opposite way before the ending. I'm just "joyful" now that Riley's Joy learned her lesson as ours did! It's ok to feel sad. Happiness loses its meaning without sadness... If one's always happy they wouldn't appriciate it! Keeping your emotions in and not letting them out is not healthy and it leads to this whole journey that Joy and Sadness shared together. Sadness is not always negative and Joy is not always posetive! They simply cannot exist without the other. Balance is key. This film is my favorite Pixar film. Thank you for this.
You understood the premise
That's actually not the premise of the film. It's the message. The premise is different than the message. The message is the final conclusion. The premise is what the story's about.
@@parsashojaei1352 yeah you right, sorry about that. I wasnt trying to be rude. but I think the message is not just about keeping emotions in or them both not being able to exist without each other but also that we need to feel sadness in order to be happy. we can only sense true happiness if we experienced true sadness. but thats just me.
Bing bong sacrificing himself for joy gets me every time
Something a lot of people miss is the blue built into Joy's design. Because there's no joy without sadness.
Oh wow I've never seen it like that! Good eye!
Yes like happy tears!
before I got to see this movie, my friend jokingly lied to me that Bing Bong was the ultimate villain XD oh how dumbfounded I was when the precious Dolphin-Elephant sacrificed himself...
Dolphin, elephant and cotton candy and cat thanks kyle

Favorite pixar movie
@@isaywhateveriwantandyougot7421 it's a movie that don't only shows you that it's ok to show your emotions but explain that kids are people too
@@isaywhateveriwantandyougot7421 it means exactly what they said.
Even after all this time, Bing Bong will always make me cry.
watch the Unedited version.. pixar actually Toned it down
@@Pinkielover Man I don’t know if my heart would be able to handle the original version then
I've never seen such an intelligent film especially in a kids film where each and every dialogue makes sense.
originally, they wanted to include a large amount of emotions. Humans experience at least 23 types of emotions. The director wanted to include them all, but realized it would complicate things. so Pixar decided to keep it simple to basic emotions that we all easily understand.
Yeah, I think that was a good decision.
Make sure you watch the short Riley's First Date. Very funny.
This movie makes me cry even in a cut format like this.
This is my favorite Pixar movie. I've seen it SO many times and I still cry every time. I just really love the theme of complicated emotions and the process of becoming emotionally mature, accepting all aspects of our feelings. Beautiful.
Same, my fave
“Take her to the moon for me” still makes me tear up
I love how this film is so relatable, particular with the emotions.

Yay always so excited when you upload! Love the range and diversity of genres/eras of films you react to! ☺️ wholesome content helping me through lockdown haha x
Something i noticed that if the emotions try to become joy for example, disgust:would come off as sarcastic. Fear:like that nervous exited feeling in the first day of school. Sadness:happy tears.
And honestly if you think about it, joy is basically the villain because she made Riley bottle up her feelings instead of letting it out(toxic positivity).
@@----7758 yeah that’s the whole point
Q. Why didn't the emotion balls change when Sadness landed on them?
Q Why didn't they just send the core emotions back to headquarters the same way as the Tripledent Gum memory?
I’d say the memory balls in “long term storage” where they were are already formed and can’t be changed. Also, I’d guess the memory workers sent the balls back up under directions from Headquarters (except the Triplemint jingle) and won’t obey Joy since she’s not in Headquarters
Definitely my most favorite Pixar movie...
Beautiful msg... Teaches kid's and adults it's ok to have feelings.. it's ok to experience them all.. I'd rather feel too much than.. too little..

Life isn't just about joy. All other emotions are just as important as joy is, and not feeling joy isn't the same as not feeling right. Experiencing other feelings is totally fine too, in fact, it's often healthier that way.

Because I always love watching you guys.😄
Joy's got one of my favorite personalities for a main character.
Really? I find her overtly annoying and until the end she exibits a toxic personality. Mind you this is my favorite Pixar film, and I understand it is a part of the plot for Joy to learn to accept Sadness, but it still doesn't sit right with me how she is straight up abusive towards Sadness who is doing her job enough to the point where it is Joy's fault entirely thst Riley falls into a depressive state. Thats my Ted talk on why I dislike Joy, have a nice day, and I hope you understand I'm not trying to hate on your opinion, rather just give you mine!
@@PerishingPurplePulsar well that’s the whole point she’s toxic positivity her acting like an asshole is the whole point like woody pushing buzz of a window to get rid of him
There is such a thing as toxic happiness. I think this movie helps to teach that sadness can be a good thing. It can help you heal. If you're never sad, you can't appreciate the moments you were happy. You also can't understand others and what they are going through. Sadness can be empathy and healing.
Any damn emotion can get toxic.
@@joshgellis3292 Very, very true.
At last! The most tear-inducing psychologically oriented pixar movie of all time
Please watch Tenet! It's the latest movie by Christopher Nolan. It has an amazing soundtrack. The music however is suppose to be immersive and can be loud. Lastly it is a COMPLEX movie. Often times viewers may have to watch it twice to understand it better. If you thought Interstellar or Inception is complex, Tenet takes the cake.

i loved you're reaction
(Timeline - 15:34)
Yes, Joy was Riley's first Emotion, but I theorize that she glows because of who she is (personified happiness), but not because she is the leader. Riley's parents had their Joys also glow even though they were not their leaders, for example.
Yay! Finally! Thanks for reacting :)
10:10 Aw that scene got me
This came out on my birthday!
Take her to the moon for me
So sad :(
Thanks for the video. I enjoyed it.
I love how Riley's dad's emotions were all men and Riley's mom's emotions were all women
but Riley's emotion's gender are mixed.. It can mean two things
Either Riley is questioning..And once she figures out her gender...Her emotions will become the gender she is sure of or it means she is not one of the two genders
also Riley's emotions are childish and immature(which is why at first sadness may have come off as irritating but she was just curious) unlike her parents whose emotions are very controlled and stuff.. Cause these emotions are children as well.. the emotions are as old as they are
Wrong it’s neither it’s just that she not figuring out who she is yet her emotions represent that she still as a lot of growth ready to happen by there childish behavior
@@mydogghost that's what i meant by questioning. everyone goes through it. for some people they end up being the gender they are born. some others figure out they are not the gender assigned at birth
@@itzmehDevi why would she questioning her gender at three and also it could she hasn’t figured out who she’s gonna be in the future and not doing anything with gender which why the parents emotions are controlled
@@mydogghost My bad. What i meant is figuring not questioning
i just used to wrong choice of words

I had my two major emotions that drove me from childhood to teen years were Anger and Fear with Sadness after I had been molested by a family member for many years, I would've spoken up back I was only 7yrs old and didn't know what and why it was happening (I still have my Sadness from those years) to me, I just knew it was bad and didn't like it. My mom thinks it's because of these horrible years that I came out as a lesbian at 13 and a half years old but I know for sure it's not, I would've come out anyways.
