Michael Moorer SAD STORY on being BROKE entering Hall of Fame; TELLS ALL on Boxing’s BRUTAL REALITY

- FightHype's Jeff Zimmerman recently caught up with Hall of Famer Michael Moorer, who had a lot to say about several topics, including his career highlights and much more. You don't want to miss what went down. Check it out!
Being in the hall of fame doesn't pay the bills. We hear fans talking none stop about fighters should be fighting for their legacy. Rubbish. Fighters should fight for as much money as they can to secure their and their families financial futures.
I'm sure Jake Pool would give him a nice payday, age wise he's perfect for Jakey
But Moorer made the money. He had both. And somehow lost all of his money.
He gave you the numbers imagine taking home 30% of what ever you make weekly or by weekly you could not survive so the same goes for them..😢
It's not just making money but also knowing how to manage it. Many of these athletes come from poor living conditions and have absolutely zero financial education, which is why they end up broke once they retire.
Legacy equals currency overtime George Foreman got the grill because of his legacy. Mike Tyson can make money off of his name because of his legacy so legacy does matter I think boxers should have unions and pension plans like all the professional athletes. Don’t even get health insurance that is criminal that they do not even get health insurance. I’m just saying compared to what other professional athletes have in terms of benefits. It is ridiculous. The boxers do not have the same benefits.
*I had 46 amateur fights. My record was 42-4 with 3-round smoker bouts, as a Lightheavy weight at 175 lbs. I had fought Golden Gloves and made Finals at Nationals. One day, I figured it out. There are two kinds of emplyment income; Income earned, and paid benefits. Athletes only receive earned income for sacrificing their bodies. At, the end. You have paid 2/3 of your earned income to promoters and managers. While you NEVER earn any paid benefits of Pension, Health Care, Profit sharing, etc. When I understood this at 28 years old. I left my amateur boxing career behind and dismissed any Pro boxing career. Despite my Camp trying to convince me otherwise. I went onto Cal State University and became a Registered Nurse*
🧢
Mike you should really look into the whole tax thing dont 10 mil received but out of that you pay 5mil out you can write off 5mil of the 10mil as wages/expenses
What year did you fight in the GG Nationals?
@@robertstroud7561
1989 I lost close fight to Terry McGroom. I was basically out pointed with jabs. After, I knocked him down in round 1.
@@robertstroud7561 he didn't 😂😂
A lot of professional athletes go broke within at least five years after retirement. The ones who go broke were never taught financial responsibility in the home or in a sports organization. Instead, they get ripped off by just about everyone.
He is very cerebral still. Thats a good thing.
Not really he’d trail off topic alot
@@venicec3310 You can listen to him talk and tell there is some intelligence there, that he's a deep thinker. He's just not as lucid with his thoughts as he used to be. A boxing career will do that to you.
Got to be about that paper mane
Loved Moorer back in the day. Excellent fighter, one of the best ever at Light HW. His fight with Cooper is an absolute classic! I truly hope his financial situation can be worked out. It’s horrible these guys put so much on the line to wind up broke. Boxing needs a better system
It's sad that they take advantage of fighters the way they do...
He said there isn't a best trainer, they are all special. 💯.
I hope Michael Moor gets some help financially.
You can always donate him some money that would be a big start...
That's a fact! If I wasn't struggling myself I certainly would. In fact once I get it together financially I will.
That's a fact! If I wasn't struggling myself I certainly would. In fact once I get it together financially I will.
Teddy was basically abusive mentally and physically even in the corner with him. I don't throw that word around lightly either I can't stand everyone calling every little thing abusive but this felt like abuse to me when I would watch those between round scuffles they had. Teddy was a lunatic towards him.
@aetnaone He was trying get him to fight harder. Michael had a tendency to go on cruise control. Moorer was fortunate to have Teddy in his corner.
My dad is 1985 WBC LightHeavy Weight Champion J.B Williamson. I’d love to watch you interview him. He has some great stories and we should get them before he’s too old. I can give you his phone number. He was just inducted into the boxing hall of fame a couple years ago.
I remember him, hope he’s doing well.✊🏿☀️🌟🛸🧬🔥💯
@@keithluckett3331 he’s doing well. His memory is incredible. He has story’s about Sugar Ray Robinson, Muhammad Ali and many other great fighters and events! A real people’s champ! My 3 sons are really influenced by him. All 3 won jr Golden Glove tournaments this year.
Wow, I’m actually glad to hear Mr. Williamson is still alive. There have been rumors to the contrary for years because he seems to have a pretty low profile.
@@Odawg96 very low profile! He’s a very humble man and still the people’s champ to the family.
You're dad was tough! I remember watching him fight Foreman and if I remember correctly, Foreman couldn't knock him off his feet.
Damn, 69% of the pay taken plus he was on the hook for training camps and miscellaneous things. Pure robery!!!! He also paid as if he took home the 10 mill so.... the taxes plus the 69% in fees.... There needs to be a boxing UNION asap!!!!
By avoiding fights?
69% is criminal 💯. How in the world is a fighter supposed to make 10 mil at the end of the day he takes the less money, that's really, really bad.
Until there is a boxing union, everybody just needs to sign with PBC. They have the best track record for taking care of their fighters. PBC fighters go out of their way to praise Al regularly because he makes sure he sets them up for life after boxing during their careers.
Most hated by racist boxing fans, but most loved by the majority of his fighters.
@@akilade0824 why is everyone leaving your black king then?
Same for Mayweather....
I would sue all those greedy people that took advantage of you throughout your career. You will always be champion 🏆 in my eyes and no one can take that from you. God bless you and I will keep you in my prayers champ!
Blessings Mike 1st Southpaw Heavyweight champions ever🙏
Like Hagler, Crawford, and a lot others, including Zhang, a current Heavyweight, Moorer fights Southpaw but is actually Right Handed (the hand he writes with). Fighters like Spence, and others, including Wallin at Heavyweight, they're Southpaws that are actually Left Handed (the hand they write with).
@DEEDUBZ yeah he's what you call a converted southpaw
@@slidecounter5813 Yep
@@DEEDUBZ
That's a fact! spence is also a converted southpaw though.
@@moneycryptocurrency1024 Spence writes with his Left Handed. He's a natural Southpaw.
Great interview and I'm so glad Michael was able to express himself. "Im broke" was sad to hear from a former champ.
Keep your head up, brother Michael. Good luck on starting up a union. Congratulations on being inducted into the Hall of Fame.
I remember when we were little kids, Tony Madason...RIP myself, and you would jog to and from Charleroi PA and train with your granddad...RIP Monessen Home Boz 4 life...❤ Much luv brother.
Appreciate Michael Sharing His Experiences With The Business Of Boxing
Every boxer should listen to this interview.
Absolutely!
I can see this happening to Ryan Garcia
Truly heartbreaking glad he brought this out to light😡
Yeah right!
This is one of the darkest, realest descriptions of what fighters went, and are still going through till this day. Hopefully they ban together and create a Union or at least life time Healthcare!!!
Agreed
That's right!
Sad to hear!
Great interview! I appreciate how you let him speak and express all of his thoughts. Sadly, Mr. Moorer's story is all too common in this sport. It would be great to see him partner with like-minded allies like Deontay Wilder, Andre Wilder, Floyd Mayweather, etc.
Thank you! Much appreciated! 🥊
Great to see the champ. Speaks well and he looks healthy. 🙏💪
That makes me very happy. 👍
Michael Moor the best heavyweight southpaw before Usyk.
It’s Floyd mayweather
Heavyweight?@@globalwarning8716

You funny. Floyd is not a heavyweight
@@moneycryptocurrency1024or southpaw 😭

The old school men NEVER talked about their accomplishments. My father was an undefeated amateur fighter in DC and Golden Glove champion at Light Heavyweight in the 1950's.
Hopefully Big George can help his fellow fighter out! He is a multi millionaire!
George's comeback was to build a new church. Michael deserves some of that overflow.
Michael was knocking shit out of big George up until George landed the bomb…lol
That Bert cooper fight was fire
I thought Cooper was getting ready to knock him out in the first round
As i once told a friend, fame is short lived. A brain injury is forever.
Michael Moorer was always a class act. One of the great Kronk fighters under Emmanual Steward. I always admired Michael Moorer and respected his abilities in the ring. His biggest weakness as a fighter I believe was his chin. He was really more of a light heavyweight, to be honest, even though he made the decision to move to heavyweight.
Very telling and necessary interview.
Great interview Champ!
One thing though, Toney was Cruiserweight Champion IBF.
Good day!
Congratulations CHAMP, glad that you have your health!❤
*Michael Moorer was an incredible boxer* and the first southpaw to become the undisputed heavyweight champion. With titles in both light heavyweight and heavyweight divisions and a record of 52 wins (40 by knockout), his skill and power were unmatched. His victory over Evander Holyfield is legendary. Moorer's induction into the Hall of Fame is well-deserved. Congratulations, Michael Moorer! 🥊🏆 #BoxingLegend #HallOfFame
He made $7 million for the Foreman fight even after tax and fees if he was left with $1.5 million he should be set for life from just that one fight
Whating Michael coming up in the pro ranks was one of the most exciting things I ever saw in boxing. He was a monster.
The manager is obviously taking too much. Probably 10% would be more reasonable. But if Moorer had invested his money in the stock market and/or real estate he would be worth millions today and never would have had to worry about affording medical insurance.
We all broke. Doesn’t make him less of a person. He’s just like any other man struggling.
I was a huge MM Fan I watched him all the way from Tuesday Night Fights ESPN All the way through becoming Champion and reigning as Champion He was super skilled tuff He was one of the most balanced well rounded Heavyweights of all time.
BOXERS NEEDS A RETIREMENT PLAN BEFORE SIGNING A CONTRACT
Never happen one punch away from never fighting again
Classy guy and great champ , he sounds a lot better than some but boxing sure does take it's toll.Stay fit and strong champ , being totally broke is no good , but if you got a little bit of money, your health family friends and a few hobbies are worth much more than all the money in the world.
I think Moore should write a book and inform the public about things he and others went through in those days and probably the second one, based on the success of the first, where he outlines things that go wrong in the sport and advise present boxers on how they can better take care of their business! I know promoters are very shrewed and some cruel to their fighters, but never knew that managers were also part of the problem. He does sound like an honest brother, bigups to him and good luck on his future endeavors within the boxing world... I wish he could get himself contracted to helping young fighters either as a manager or trainer. He is deserving of a Hall of Fame!
"Moore"? Michael Moore makes successful documentaries. Maybe he should do one about boxing.
My guess is that a lot of people, even just casual sports fans, remember exactly where they were when Foreman landed that punch and knocked Michael Moorer out. That and when people heard or watched Buster Douglas beat Mike Tyson. It was that shocking.
Michael Moore GOD BLESS HIM 🔥👑🔥
Great insight on want goes on behind the scenes in boxing 😢
Yeah I hope that interview gets attention and all the boxers need to come together and make some demands because they're definitely getting mistreated and their the ones putting their lives on the line. U got some fighters with all that money buying dumb shit instead of trying to start Unions and getting some type of benefits for boxers after retirement. Something gotta give!
Good to see Moorer. Also, glad to see him make it to the boxing HOF. Moorer, also broke down the shady deals some boxers had or maybe still have to go through. Smh.
CONGRATS SIR AND DESERVES IT !
I grew up in it starting at 7-8yrs old at the YMCA. Had a bunch of amateur bouts, figured out going Pro wasn't practical for me. Loved it and have been around it off/on most of my life with a fair number of guys I knew who did turn Pro. I'm 100% on MM and all the ex Pro's side struggling or not. However, sometimes because of tough situations guys don't negotiate their contracts properly in the beginning and they end up on the short end. I gotta say though, it's not like you did it completely blind, because it's not like it isn't talked about, alot! It's was pounded in our heads like punches, how much these managers/ handlers/promoters were sharks, constantly, it's not a surprise!EVERY teenager around that was showing potential it was a Huge topic of discussion.
Micheal I watched the way you reacted in the ring after the foreman fight your a class athlete Michael
Michael Moorer is a nice guy but professional boxing is a business; amateur boxing is an alternative. People choose to sign boxing contracts or not to sign contracts. Investors expect a return on their financial investment in boxers; its business not a charity. Why should you expect others to take a financial risk on your career without a return on their investment.
Nothing but respect for you, Champ
I used to love boxing and boxed myself for many years, but now i see how when these guys reach older age, they seem so ...... Well slow.. i feel bad. Its a tough sport.
I’ve heard of the crooked business of boxing cashing in on fighters repeatedly for decades. But I never knew just how bad until Michael Moorer broke it down with specifics.
Also his resentment and bitterness as a result of it all really came through strongly.
Bad enough they dicked him over financially working everything in their favor but then act like they don’t know him now that his fighting days are over.
I can’t remember the last time I’ve been so saddened and angered by an interview.
I agree they should have another heavyweight division for men 250 and over or so and i agree also about thicker gloves too and i think maybe they should make the fights 10 rounds instead of 12 round fights
Fight a youtuber!
You'll make some good cash to keep you going 👍🏼
That’s not a good idea when he was talking about joints and hips.✊🏿☀️🌟🛸🧬🔥💯
Im a huge fan of Michael moorer unbeatable at light heavyweight & so exciting at heavyweight the fight with bert Cooper 1 of the best fights of all time......I hope a wealthy fan can do something for this legend
Read the contracts
Or bring them to a lawyer to let them break it down so you fully understand it
Don’t allow the manager and such people to worry about your personal business/ finances , such as doing your taxes etc.
Dude said he bought a house found out he didn’t even own it
I’d went to my bank myself got the money out my own account
Meet with the realtor/ legit owner
Myself and made my own transaction
Also I’d do my own taxes every year
Question: why didn't you seek an accountant's service especially because of the major numbers they are dealing with
Many great fighters like Michael put their heart and soul on the line for entertainment. They should be walking around like kings, enough money a permanent roof over the head. I love Boxing but the politics and business side of it makes me sick. Its so sad.
The way these fighters are treated is CRIMINAL!!!
I made it up to the 28:00 mark Michael is correct this is a filthy business.
Michael super great human 🙌🏾🎥
God bless you champ Elcaballo 🇵🇷
The Sanctioning Bodies need to go for a variety of reasons. One being they take from the fighter. One Belt every division = Casual Fans back. Michael provides more evidence of that here.
Foreman should front Moorer 2 million.
Too bad the interviewer decided to sensationalize the title. Moorer is well spoken. Good for him getting in the HOF. I wish him the best.
Very good interviewer
A Great Champion who deserves to be in the boxing Hall of Fame.
He is on to something with the idea for bigger gloves
Very good raw interview I believe if all the fighters get together and form thier own organization and get rid of all the fucken corrupt un-needed crooks sponging off these great one of kind warriors, is so possible I'm in ,all it takes is one fighter with the will to create this fuck these promoters and so called managers each fighter has his own team according his plan under the new pro fighter corporation and keep the proceeds , it is not that hard maybe at first it would take more then one who think so , but politics would be ousted of the fight game , I mean the fans are the money flow with or without the TICKS TRYING TO STEAL
Are you related to Bob Dylan (Robert Zimmerman)?
Unfortunately no 😂
Well that was fuckin depressing....that man deserves a lot better than what he's got....greed absolutely rules this world and it's just sad to see
At Light Hwt, he was (I believe) undefeated & all wins by KO. A lean killer. Then he ate his way to a lesser Hwt.
I haven heard Moorer speak in over 20 years or so.
I'm shocked at his cognizant abilities being somewhat slow.
If you remember when Michael fought, he never really took a lot of heavy hits.
The hardest I saw him being hit was against Holyfield and Foreman.
Those 2 fights alone might’ve been enough. Heavy hitters for sure.
Legend !
Excellent fighter highly skilled , great puncher beat Holyfeild but was koed in the return. Gives credit to Foreman winning. Even George said Moorer was powerful and shook him. Yes there needs to be a super heavyweight division.
1 of thee best fighters ever...........
I'm broke to but I'm not crying about it .
This is sad, this is really criminal 😢
I see why Floyd was doing what he was doing
Wow, can't believe who much money is taking from the fighter....so sad how he is today.
13:50 ish… Michael said George Formans 30lbs being a huge advantage against him… Wilder is facing guys 50/60/70/80lbs bigger than him an all the majority of guys say is Wilder sucks because he lost to those guys smfh it’s sickening
Unfortunate economics for the fighters, for sure. The wiser ones will recognize they have negotiating leverage and navigate themselves better. But I'm sure it's not easy. That said: What Michael said about the Promoters, Managers and the others not having to pay taxes on their take. That is incorrect. The boxer's tax is paid on whatever their take is (meaning the gross less all those fees) and then the recipients of the fees will all pay their taxes on their respective takes.
This man fought holyfield twice and foreman once, he should've been set for life from those fights alone. I respect boxers above any other athletes in the world, they literally risk their lives and health for our entertainment, i remember hearing about Joe Louis having made just 800k from 4 million of his purses and if you take away taxes that's only about 500k throughout his WHOLE CAREER, and joe Frazier was living in his gym when he passed, that's why I'm happy to see a few boxers that are able to maintain some of their wealth
Toney never won a major championship at heavyweight. Zimmerman never heard of Bob Fitzsimmons.
Not only that he never won an actual lightheavyweight title he won IBF middleweight, super middleweight and cruiserweight titles
Yes I’ve heard of him 😂
He technically did but he failed a drug test so the win was taken away from him.
Definitely should be a trainer, start with Wilder and replace that one clown
Maybe it's misleading or something as to what these fighters actually make and have to pay out? Michael had some pretty good paydays to me (2 fights with Holyfield, George Foreman, etc.). What did he do with his money?
He seems ok physically and is pretty well spoken, but he does seems a little slow...
yes lost train of thought a few times
What a cautionary tale. Ii hope Fighthype paid him to do the interview
These dudes live in the moment and don't think about their future and invest their money for it to grow or put some to the side. They know they won't fight forever nor will the money last forever but they're too busy living beyond their means trying to impress people or take care of everyone. Can't always feel bad for these guys. Money does't last for a lifetime for most.
These boxers need to say who the promoters and managers are that were stealing, otherwise they are off in the sunset enjoy the money
I agree with Michael moorer
It's CRIMINAL
*”Let him know that I’m a Heavyweight like Michael Moorer”* #IYKYK
Is there some kind of rule that says you gotta enter the Hall of Fame with money? He spent everything and probably regrets it, nothing unique about that
Man that's a shame he deserves better but boxing has always been a double edge sword....
Man all these super rich boxers should help him out. MoneyMay? Canello? Fury? Kick the man half a crumb from your tables, FFS!
If they did that then it's no reason why they couldn't come together and form an union. They don't do either because they don't care and boxers are selfish.
@@MalevolentBite sad truth.
Well, that turned quickly from an interview into a "wheres my money" story. Anyway, being a HoF now, im sure you can do lots of appearances. photo ops, signatures and all that stuff ...paid.
It's not George's responsibility to give him anything that's the problem everybody thinks there entitled too
The promoter should not be taking a piece of a fighters' purse nor should promoters' expenses be paid for. Michael was horribly exploited!
I bet he had a lot of fun with that money! Watch the last couple minutes of this interview! You will understand why he is broke! That said I wish you the very best Mike
Michael Moorer is INCREDIBLE. fighter. & HUMAN BEING. he IS a GOOD MAN. Michael if your broke stop by my house in Vegas & I buy you lunch.
But if you don't use your money right, you got to know how to use your money. Let it work for you all these cars and all this money. You know $10001000 jury and all kind of stuff you buy in Eva. I learned a lesson about that when I got the low suits in. I didn't do what you suppose to. Do you lose? Same thing with Boxers football players. It's not a football players that are broke professional football players. They don't have no money. That's because they didn't invest or they didn't invest right. They didn't do the right thing with their money
I just gotta say, I’m sorry to see the guy so destroyed,
But hindsight is 20’20
And I do believe that someone does need to look out for
Boxers a little bit better, because believe it or not most of
Them are already damaged starting out, you just don’t see it
Because of their youth, and a lot of them aren’t responsible as
With any child. So it’s a shame, they do need regulation in the spot.
You gotta put that money away and not live like it’s never gonna end
Black people that make all that money up front.
Top 3 light heavyweight in history.
My man looks like The Executioner B Hop 😂
Yeah, you’re right-he looks like an identical twin!

*Your jealousy about my accomplishments is the highest compliment I could ever receive. When you have no experience getting beat-up in the ring to refine your craft or probably never even earned a College degree. THANKS!*
That's the fighters fault for signing contracts that's not in their interest. You have promoters and managers that's fraudulent is crazy. Then when do get money you all these people around you with their hand out.
