2011 Bama LSU felt like a Super Bowl (another casualty of corporatism, btw) to me. This Bama UGA game does not feel nearly as urgent with respect to in-season ramifications as that one. Ironically, that one ended up being the impetus for this change😅

I think if you are a fan. Such as i am, of a team that is or is like Nebraska, you see every single regular season game these years as incredibly meaningful. Doesn't matter if it's Purdue or Ohio St. The problem is some teams simply win too much I think. And that really takes any meaning out of a lot of games.
Idk I think it’s an issue with some fans. I’m working on my third degree at Georgia - so you know I’m a huge fan - and I get physically nauseous watching every game regardless of who we are playing 😂. People who take wins for granted are just not real fans imo
Remember when winning a bowl game was enough of a reason to play your bowl game. Now it just feels like half these kids- by that I mean NFL prospects- only wanna play their bowl game if they have a chance at a title. I get not wanting to get hurt, but seems like kids have been trained to believe that if they play and get hurt, it will signifigantly impact their draft status. Me personally, I'd be concerned as a coach if a guy DIDN'T play their bowl game. To me, if you truly love the game, which all these kids claim to love, you wouldn't be missing a game unless you were physically unable to play, CFP or not.
I'm 68. Loosing conference identity has changed the game. It's now semi-pro with teams not having a local feel. Players aren't local, teams aren't carrying conference identity. Come on Oklahoma and Texas aren't southeastern.... we are flat prairies and oil wells. USC isn't cold and damp North Central America. Semi-pro farce.
I'm 30 and I agree. Also going to 12 teams was too much too fast. If they wanted to expand they could have gone 6 teams with the 1 and 2 seed having a bye week.
Texas and Oklahoma fit in just fine in the SEC. They border states that have been SEC for a long time. That aint a conference realignment issue. The new B1G and ACC teams are a disgrace tho. I dont even mind the new Big 12 teams maybe except for UCF, they shouldnt be there. The sport is in a better place overall today than ever, but it's different in many ways. Im 27 and i miss how it used to feel as well but i dont hate the way things are today either.
It's not the incompatible geography or "conference identity" that is changing the game; it's (1) pay for play without any cap, guidelines, or contracts and (2) the transfer portal and how it is being used; thousands of players transferring every year. A bunch of individuals who are only concerned about themselves rather than the team as a whole; they could care less about the University, the traditions, or the fans. If another program offers them more money, THEY GONE. THEY DON'T CARE about you or "your" stupid football team that they play for. All they care about is how much money they can make and/or getting into the NFL. I can't say that I blame them; but that doesn't change the fact that it is becoming detrimental to what made college football so special for so many people who love this game and the football program that they are a fan of. There is less and less leadership among players and absolutely zero loyalty or reverence to the team and University that they play for. And unless something changes, it's only going to get worse.
The top 20 teams play bowl games and that's it. Make them special again. Whoever is undefeated afterwards can play a title game if they're of like quality and SoS - Rose Bowl and Orange Bowl winners are the only two undefeated teams left after all is said and done - let them play. That's your playoff. No more of this 500 bowl games, like the Harris-Walz Tampon Bowl, featuring Helen Keller Tech vs Alaska A&M State or the Toilet Bowl, brought to you by Tostitos, Arm & Hammer and Goodyear
As an Iowa State fan the value of making a bowl game and getting just 6 wins was substantial. Fan bases weren’t checking out because winning a bowl game was a huge accomplishment and allowed different levels of programs to have different levels of success is what made the sport of college football great
Hey, luv the show, & your brutal honesty, your unbiased approach, the way you explain viewpoints from each teams fans perspective, and the this programs structured-systematic-professional approach to the greatest game of all time. But seriously, it’s driving me nuts, wtf is a chaliah!?!

Am I the crazy one for loving the CFP expansion and also loving Bowl Games still? The levels of recalibrated expectation can still be there, while also injecting more meaning for teams like Ole Miss and Penn State.
I like the playoff expansion because it was necessary for where the sport was headed and I still like bowls but they just don’t mean as much because of the new cfp

As an Alabama fan who’s been a fan since the early 90s I’ll say that it’s always been a National Championship or bust mentality with Alabama football and its fanbase. But despite that mentality the majority of the Alabama fanbase has always tuned in for Alabama football games regardless of if they were in the National Championship game or not. But Alabama has a die hard fanbase that’s way more devoted than 99% of the other fanbases out there.

I went to my first Georgia game in 1968 and have gone to games from time to time since then. Each game was a total happening, probably because very few were on TV. Also, Larry Munson was such a compelling play by play guy that many prefered listening to him on the radio over watching on TV when a game was televised. The game is played at a higher level than back then, but to this old baby boomer, the game experience leaves much to be desired..
FSU still has a chance to make the ACC championship game, so them not facing Clemson or Miami there is not out of the question, but yes it is close to impossible, and is now an 11 on the boldness scale
I have mixed feelings about the big game conversation. I would not say that games meant more back then but you cannot look at this without including NIL. Players used to play hard every game because they were fighting to earn money in the NFL. Now they don't have that pressure of going pro to make money, so playing in some tier 3 bowl game has less reward and the same risk it always has. Being in the title hunt keeps players motivated when that financial carrot on a stick($) isn't there anymore.
Thank you! This idiot seems to forget all the teams that got screwed and all the bickering and nothing ever settled. Basically, if your team was one favored by the BCS you long for the days you didn't have to earn it. That's all it is. Anytime you see someone taking a position against NIL or portal or 12 team playoff look at who their team is. Every other sport in the world settles it on the field, but some morons just can't let go. How many awesome games have we had this year? We used to go weeks without a decent game and then maybe one the next week. That's why they were so big. Because it was stupid.
The only thing about college football that is meaningless is the ongoing and tired discussion of what is or isn’t meaningful. I was watching when Woody Hayes hauled off and punched an opposing player. It’s always been a great game, and if everyone would just sit back, turn the tv on Saturdays, grab a beer, and soak it up, they’d realize it always will be a great game. Enjoy life and college football. Personally, I really miss ten-cent Snickers bars, but they still taste great.
Don’t enjoy my prediction here… the contraction of the sport is just around the corner . FBS currently at 134 teams. The massive realignment that’s happened in the last 5 years has also happened with three other “new” college football events: #1 -NIL (new money to professionalize the sport) #2 - The transfer portal (college player free agency) #3 - Huge new TV contracts for just a select few conferences There will be entire programs that will “fold” due to not making the cut, and getting into a conference that has huge TV $$$ to enjoy. Those who are left out on the outside? Their days left of playing in college football are numbered. Financially they simply won’t have the money necessary to run their programs.
Oh, Josh, you're missing the point again. Bowl Games haven't become "meaningless" because of the Playoff and how they may- or may-not affect qualifying. Bowl Games have become MEANINGLESS because there are 42 of them! FORTY-TWO OF THEM!! If there were still only six (6), then I'd still care. Maybe.
Penn State is a sitting duck IMO. I'd really like them to prove me wrong, but Illinois is punching way above their weight class, and there's a chance Penn State fails to separate and gets taken to the wire ... and if that happens, I'm taking the Illini all day. Neutral party btw.
My take on the ‘big game’ talk. I personally think it entirely boils down to the power of nostalgia in combination with there being so much more thrown at us. BUT, even if there is more merit to it than that and you wanna boil it down more to it being related to the CFP and the general expansion of the sport I say the CFP is well worth it. I think having better parity and competitive integrity is more important than regular season games “meaning more”. The BCS system was fucking stupid, and was anti competitive. The CFP was long over due as was its expansion to 12 teams. I want the best teams to play each other in a playoff, with the last 2 teams remaining playing for the championship. That’s how you crown a champion in sports, it’s by far the most effective(but certainly not perfect) way to truly have the best team be crowned the best. I don’t care if that dilutes regular season games at all. Besides, I always thought it was so stupid that one regular season game loss just ends your chances at the championship in the BCS era. It made regular season games more important at the cost of competitive integrity and overall season excitement
Competitive integrity is what should be desired for every game played. The committee system could have worked IF its members followed the proper goal to get the best teams into the 4 team playoffs. Maybe TX, Bama, MI, and WA were all better than UGA at the end of last season, but for Georgia to drop from 1 to 6 for a 3 point loss is B.S. Georgia was a better team last season than they are this season, but they've got a better chance at making the playoffs this season despite a tougher schedule.
Alabama last year got credit of getting out of Auburn with a win. Georgia gets bashed for getting out of Kentucky yet nobody believes in Georgia after a bad week but puts all faith into Bama after a bad week interesting
thats College football you can find examples of this with pretty much every team - 1 week they are amazing next week they struggle and everyone over reacts
@@johaw105 i thought that’s what it was too until i started working with children and seeing how adults turned the best time of year into a cooperate cash grab
I think Josh’s argument has merit about how games used to matter on their own right, and they existed as important separate of any playoff or championship implications. But I think he’s speaking from the perspective of someone who is born and bred truly loving college football. That’s how hardcore college football fans felt. That isn’t how most of America felt or feels though. If college football wanted to expand as a sport nation and worldwide, the CFP is necessary. YOU cared about Georgia/Bama 20 years ago just because it’s a Saturday in the fall. The rest of the country didn’t. Don’t believe me? Check the TV ratings. It’s what’s best for the sport whether purists like it or not, but if you love the game you should want what’s best for it
@@JoshPateCFB "to protect yourself against loss by supporting more than one possible result or both sides in a competition". So in case an upset happens you can be like "ohh we had this on upset watch!"
We need a commissioner. Mascot TV ad promotions. And public requirements for members of an “AP” poll that votes for rankings and multiple bowl “more” games and Hunger games tournament. Cross conference parity competition. Mascot all in inclusive hotels.

There was a buttload of “meaningless bowl games” in 2005 too! 6 win teams were in bowl games then too. Maybe they weren’t meaningless to them but they won’t be now either! 12 team will be better AND the regular season still makes a difference and is important
The bcs changed the sport. Its all about winning it all now which is unrealistic for 98 percent of the sport. used to be a better sport. Less plays per game and more commercials as well
Time marches on, things change…. Oh my gosh this includes football??!!?? Yes people, this includes football. Everything changes, look at the world around you. Doesn’t always change for the better, as a matter of fact it rarely does but if you constantly bang your head against a wall because of it….. leads to misery.
Just wanted to say thanks for jumping on the SEC overhype train. I want everyone to keep Ohio State underestimated. They are the best team in the country, but please keep that under wraps like you are doing. Do not change as the weeks progress because you are too clueless to see it now. I've watched every team in the country multiple times and THE Buckeyes have the least amount of weaknesses of all the teams, because every team has weaknesses. The reality is they can score with anyone if it came down to it, but the defense will not make that an issue. I am not some delusional Ohio State fan that expects us to win it all every year. This team is very much in the same vain as scUM was last year.
I think the Buckeyes might be in for a bigger challenge than what they think, against Sparty. Yeah, we might lose, but this is a different team, and lost to a good BC team by only 4....OSU has basically played HS teams so far, so we'll see....now don't get upset, Buckeye fans, I am based in reality...Sparty's been outscored 143-30 over the past three games...that's bad, real bad....only one way to go from there. Just hoping for a better showing from Sparty..

Good luck to my grandpa's Dawgs but Roll Tide. Either way see yall in the playoffs 🫡
Go Dawgs!!!
ROLL TIDE!!
🐘🐘🐘🐘
For college football it’s the playoffs. The games don’t have the life or death consequences they used to.
It’s what’s best for the sport whether purists like it or not, but if you love the game you should want what’s best for it
Hook’em 🤘🏽
Roll Tide! Bama is gonna dog walk Georgia. We gonna let the nation know that Alabama is here to stay ! A crimson title wave is coming! Let’s go!
Being a conference champion don’t mean anything anymore . Now people just want to win to get better placement in the playoffs
Proposal to begin calling Luke Altmyer "Cool Hand Luke" if he pulls the upset against Penn St.
that whole upset alert segment is him just hedging his bets
What bets?
@@JoshPateCFB "to protect yourself against loss by supporting more than one possible result or both sides in a competition". So in case an upset happens you can be like "ohh we had this on upset watch!"
Fan bases were 100% checking out after 2 loss seasons in the pre playoff era
Very few fan bases have teams that regularly have less than 2 losses
Roll Tide Roll!
"Florida v Florida State should be illegal to put on TV right now" 🤣
We need a commissioner. Mascot TV ad promotions. And public requirements for members of an “AP” poll that votes for rankings and multiple bowl “more” games and Hunger games tournament. Cross conference parity competition. Mascot all in inclusive hotels.
VA will be lucky if they go 4 and 6
I dont wanna hear nothing about Georgia’s mental advantages when they lose in Austin in 4 weeks cube-lick
VA Tech……. Your comments aged well
Bama by 10 over GA.
What’s your opinion of players opting out of bowl games to prepare for the draft instead?
51:00 No Cade, nobody goes to Blue Ninja at ALL. Blue Ninja is trash, so is scream machine, and batman isn't far behind it. The only elite rides are Superman, Goliath, Mindbender, & Daredevil...
Kansas st can you shut you down defensively? Huh lol what game yuu be watching
Less plays per game and more commercials as well
3:20 The Winnipeg Jets. Ya… IDK why they don’t share when the Jets barely make the playoffs. 🤷♂️😂
I’m a late kick man. I get my gas at QT, do my gambling on fanduel, and find my big league chew at my conveniently located academy sports and outdoors
My man 🤝
Time marches on, things change…. Oh my gosh this includes football??!!?? Yes people, this includes football. Everything changes, look at the world around you. Doesn’t always change for the better, as a matter of fact it rarely does but if you constantly bang your head against a wall because of it….. leads to misery.
Go Bucks!! 🌰
Kansas did beat that dude. 😭😂🤣😅😭
The NHL reference is from the Winnipeg Jets. Dang man, can you show some respect Josh?
No he's 100% cfb show and nothing even NFL matters for the show. It's the theme of the show not full reality. Don't sweat it my guy
Ah....MDS. eh? Michigan Derangement Syndrome...oh well.
@@benavich8 you were saying?....
Colorado ran em out the building shout out to the haters 😂
Well this AL -GA game does matter because if you lose another game it could put your but of the play offs that my take on the game
