Fixing a Yamaha TC-800D Stereo Tape Deck

  • A few weeks ago, I bought a second hand Tape Deck, sold "for parts or non functioning", mostly because it seemed like the kind of thing I could fix, and it was in decent external condition, all that for a fraction of the price they normally sell for.
    Armed with the service manual and a replacement set of belts, I managed to get it running again - mostly -.
    I'm still stuck with one remaining spring that I had no idea where it goes, and there are occasional "crunch" noises.
    It's getting there :)

    hi there i saw your post on a forum, i ended up with the same spring and no sound and dont know where is meant to go! did you find eventually?

    • @DbugII

      Nope, no idea where it goes.
      The current status of the device is that it works fine on the right channel, I can play multiple tapes properly, no issue at all... but the left channel starts fine, then some scrunching noise starts to happen up to the point it's mostly noise, which I can silent by cutting the volume on the left side of course.
      I suspect it's probably more a capacitor having a problem and has nothing to do with the spring... but I wish I knew where this spring would go!
      If you find out, please tell :)
      Thanks.

      @@tepishincool417 hard to say, but as far as I can see, the "pitch control" is connected to the "servo board" (see page 16 of the service manual), maybe you have a problem with contacts or some damage cable?

    My Yamaha TC 800 stops the tape every now and, do you think it’s a problem caused by the belts?

    • @DbugII
      @DbugII  Год назад +1

      Hard to say without more information: If it's the belt you should still hear (or see) the electric motor spinning.
      If when the tape stops the motor is not spinning, that could be electrical, like a bad contact on the play/pause button.
      When it pauses, do all the needles on the indicator stay "up" or do they go down like if the tape drive had been stopped?

    I'm just waiting for the belts to arrive. Wish me luck please. And please recalibrate the meters. I'm sure you have an oscilloscope.

    • @DbugII
      @DbugII  Год назад +1

      Actually, I did not have a scope when I made the video, but got one for Christmas soon after :)
      I wish you luck, and make sure you have some cleaning product, because these residues of belt are super sticky and you easily get black crap all over the tools, the workbench, etc!

    Is there a guide online for replacing the belts ? Thanks. Malc

    • @DbugII
      @DbugII  5 лет назад

      I've not found any online guide, but the service manual is available for download, it's at least enough to find out how to open the device.
      I've taken plenty of photos when servicing mine, so you can download them and use them as reference pictures if you are wondering what goes where :)
      defence-force.org/download/Yamaha-TC800D.zip
      Regarding how belts gets positioned, just look at the video at 8:15, that's about all I have!
      I think the most important things are to take your time, hunt all the small bits of dry belts, make sure to remove all the nasty sticky parts with some solvant, and make sure you don't get any spring lost.
      Btw, if you find where the weird shaped spring I mentioned on this forum post goes: www.tapeheads.net/showpost.php?p=775348835&postcount=1 I would sure would like to know because I've not been able to, and I'm sure it's responsible for the "crunchy" noises in mine.
      Good luck!

    I'm having a difficult time just getting the door off... step one in the service manual. Any advise?

    • @DbugII
      @DbugII  4 года назад

      I've to admit it's not trivial, and it feels like you are going to break it, but basically there are two steps, one which is easy (push down on the back around the pivot to unlatch the attachment points) and one which requires some back and forth twisting, it's honestly complicated, but if that can help here is what the two parts look like:

      - defence-force.org/download/Yamaha-TC800D/IMGP7513.JPG

      @@DbugII Pretty sure I get the pushing down the back. There’s a little click and it doesn’t close properly unless you re-set it. But I do not understand the motion for step 2. Do you pry the door past the open point, or is it more pulling it straight out?

      @@devonojas There you go, since that seems to be difficult, I just made a video, hopefully that's easier to understand like that :D

      I got the set of three belts from this particular listing: www.ebay.com/itm/Yamaha-TC-800D-TC800-D-Belt-Kit-For-Cassette-Deck-3-Belts-/232766416485
      They did work fine for me, perfect fit, but I'm quite certain you can find other listings that will work as well :)

    • @DbugII

      Pas trop compliqué, mais c'est surtout que c'est super compact, plein de trucs à enlever (styles les petites boucles autour des cables pour les maintenir ensemble), des trucs à bien repositionner correctement quand on remote (style la petite plaque métallique sur pivot qui doit appuyer sur les deux tiges blanches du contacteur principal).
      En prenant des photos pendant le démontage, en positionnant les vis bien a plat sur la table en notant ou elles vont après, en faisant gaffe de bien mettre tous les boutons de volume dans une position fixe histoire de ne pas galérer en les remontant... on s'en sort :D

    Can the pinch roller be replaced?

    • @DbugII
      @DbugII  Год назад +1

      If you look at the Service Manual, page 22, at the top left, the (4) and (65) are the two parts that make the pinch roller, and it seems to be attached with a small "c" shaped clamp, so the pinch roller assembly seems possible to remove, now to replace the gummy part itself, no idea.
