  • The Puffing Billy Railway is a heritage steam train located in the Dandenong Ranges near Melbourne, Australia. It is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the region and offers visitors a unique experience of riding on an authentic steam train through scenic landscapes.
The Puffing Billy Railway was originally built in the early 1900s to serve the communities in the mountainous regions of the Dandenong Ranges. It operated as a part of the Victorian Railways, transporting goods and passengers. However, with the advent of modern transportation, the railway line was eventually closed in 1954.
In 1962, the Puffing Billy Railway was reopened as a heritage railway, run by a dedicated group of volunteers who restored the tracks and steam locomotives. Today, it operates as a not-for-profit organization, providing visitors with a nostalgic journey through the lush forests, fern gullies, and picturesque countryside of the Dandenong Ranges.
The train itself, powered by a vintage steam locomotive, chugs along a 25-kilometer (15.5-mile) track between Belgrave and Gembrook. The journey offers breathtaking views of the region's natural beauty, including the towering eucalyptus trees, rolling hills, and charming rural landscapes.
Passengers can choose from various ticket options, including open-sided carriages and first-class carriages with comfortable seating and large windows. Along the route, the train passes over historic trestle bridges, through lush forests, and even stops at certain stations, allowing passengers to get off, explore, and capture memorable photographs.
