This was such an inspirational and heart wrenching interview. I think deep down Lars probably knew that his time was almost up, but his courage, strength, positivity and gentleness really showed in this episode. Thank you Lars for your music. It will continue to live on in our lives. RIP.

Apparently, he did not have time to record The Hammerklavier Sonata, only to perform it. So, any musician alive, if you really want to share some work, please, do not wait for recording companies, make use of your own youtube videos. Consider the late Patricia Janeckova, who has Mozart`s "Laudate Dominum" on record in that way.

Lars was a genius, but he never behaved like one. I was lucky to know him both from being at the same school in the 1990s, my father being one of his teachers, then also from playing violin in an orchestra in Düren (where he grew up) several times when he visited his - very unattractive, but he didn't care - home. I think his first public appearance as both conductor and solo pianist (Kapellmeister) was with this orchestra (Cappella Villa Duria). It's always been my favorite concert.
He always came back to his home, giving concerts to the audience that was as unable to really grasp what a genius this town had spawned as it was proud of this genius. Dear family of Lars, I want to send my condolenceses. What a loss, and how wonderful he was.

tear does not stop....The most touching moment of this interview was when he reminisce about the interaction episode between his teacher Karl Heinz Kämmerling and his daughter. She plays a little piece for Kämmerling as most kids would do and Kämmerling says "Don't you think that each note has its own life?' I am sure that was what Lars did all his life. Give each note its own life. R.I.P.

Just learned today that Lars Vogt passed away, and came across this remarkable interview. "I would love it if they would have a sense of what it can mean if you can do something on an instrument that really speaks to your soul. That would be wonderful. And you don't have to play Paganini Caprices to do that, You can play Album fuer die Jugend, which often you can do after one year of piano teaching. You have some of the most amazing pieces in front of you that are quite easy to play. And yet, you are already asked as an artist to do something with it." In complete tears. What an extraordinary, loving encouragement to us amateur musicians! ...I need to pick up my violin again.

Practically the whole time throughout the conversations I was moved and on the verge of tears, the poignancy of Lars answers to Zsolt's very intelligent and sensitive questions filled the silences between his words like something of a greater essence.

I am particularly moved by Lars Vogt’s memory of his first piano teacher. I have nothing but gratitude for the unknown teacher who first recognizes talent and then knows how to let it grow and flourish.

RIP. thank you. I wrote to Living the Classical Life and begged for an interview with Lars. They were working on it. I’m so so grateful this is here. Every word spoke volumes about who he was, how deeply he experienced life and music. He took nothing for granted. When I watched this, I knew every measured word he spoke was an effort and the truth. It was hearing his In The Mist by Janacek that opened doors for me. He always answered my tweets about his music. I asked him if he was going to give a master class for us to witness, to take in. He said his lessons with students were usually private, but who knew wind emoji, perhaps. I wonder what his experience is right now. So grateful to this humble gifted pianist. “My beloved instrument,” he called it.

I got tears in my eyes. Thank you so much for this wonderful interview. I'm a "little music teacher and conductor" at school / church choir and Lars Vogt was a great example of being musician, artist, human - also if you "only" play "smaller" pieces and so on. He had and has a great impact in life of so many people. He had so much to give to us. You both spoke of hope and his too early death seems so inconceivable and unjust. Maybe the quotation / quote from Vaclav Havel may comfort a little bit:
Hope is not the conviction that something will turn out well but the certainty that something makes sense, regardless of how it turns out. (Vaclav Havel)

Having heard all of Lars' concerts at Sage Gateshead with the RNS, as their conductor and conducting/playing, I feel as if I knew him personally. As he left the stage he always winked and had such a beaming smile, and you always felt as if it was for you personally. Such a talented pianist but such a lovely human being too.
Thank you for the joy you gave both myself and my late mother. Rest in peace Lars.

These are such beautiful words-and spot-on. He will be missed, and clearly he touched many individuals directly with his spirit. -zsolt

Thank you very much for this wonderful and delicate interview. I loved this pianist. I have been growing up with this musician, and he has also been one of my guiding stars. We do have the same age and I’ve also been very ill lately.
The musicians life is such a beautiful but also very difficult life. You receive and you give a lot…and your emotions are never resting, that’s maybe the most difficult to manage. RIP wonderful musician.

The painful loss we feel is Love Expressing Itself, contained in the artist and wonderful human being Lars Vogt and yet encompassing all that is... Through and in Music, Lars will continue to be with us, "in dem, was hinter den Noten steht...", in That/Who/Which Is behind the notes... urging and encouraging us to fly...

Thank you so much. My heart goes out to Lars Vogt, for his courage, simplicity, humour and depth of thought. I wish him and his family well, and hope that these hard times will pass and they will have many happy years together. Zsolt Bognar, it has been as though you’d disappeared; could not find Living the Classical Life, and could not find you. Thank you for being there and for this very moving interview with Lars Vogt.

Thank you so much for posting this extraordinary interview. As a birthday present, I was taken by my daughter to hear the Tetzlaff Trio play all of the Piano Trios of Vogt's beloved Brahms at the Wigmore Hall. One of the great musical experiences of my life. So moving to hear Vogt articulate the essence of his relationship with Brahms. We have lost a truly great artist and a lovely man.

I only got to know him through Danae Dorken, an incredible pianist, and pupil of his.
The performance of Mozart and Mendelssohn with both artists is just unbelievable.
His spirit is still here with us.

Thank you for sharing this interview. What a beautiful soul, with such hope and wisdom to share even in his final days. We are all glad to have listened to his music and also grateful that music brought so much to his life till the very end. I couldn’t stop crying when he spoke of his 4 year old daughter and people who meant a lot to him in his life. May he rest in peace.

I had a ticket for the concert Lars should have played and conducted in Paris on the 4th of october with his orchestra, and which was transformed in a very touching "homage concert" (with Chistian Tetzlaff, Ian Bostridge, Daniel Harding and others). But this interview with him is the most beautiful homage that can be paid to this great human being.
