This is my opinion, from Alex Abenchuchan, the Daily Moth founder. This is just an opinion video, an ASL editorial.
The Super Bowl ASL performances have been an annual disaster for the Deaf community who are watching on TV. It’s usually a frustrating experience.
It won’t change as long as the NAD is in bed with the NFL and the founder of Love Sign, Alexis Kashar.
The NAD needs Kashar to have access to the NFL.
Kashar has used this power to start a couple of businesses, RosebyANDER, a jewelry company with ILY handshapes, and Love Sign, a new company to sell ILY products on NFL apparel. She also benefits from hundreds of thousands of dollars’ worth of free advertising on the most-watched TV program of the year, the Super Bowl.
I saw the ASL performers this year and past years wearing Kashar’s business products. It’s not appropriate.
If you go back a few months in October, during the NAD Breakthrough Awards Gala, the NAD awarded Kashar with “Entrepreneur of the Year Award.” This is after Kashar’s Love Sign company was a large sponsor of the gala.
Ah. So if you want to get a big award from the NAD, I suggest you sponsor the NAD! Conflict of interest? Don’t worry. Important, you get to go to the Super Bowl!
The Love Sign logo looks like two ASL handshapes placed next to each other to make it seem blurry. Maybe to signify ILY in a moving manner. But it does make me cross-eyed. It’s like when I’m at an eye exam and I’m trying to figure out what I’m looking at. I’m seeing double.
That’s exactly how I feel when I am trying to watch both the ASL performance and the hearing broadcast at the same time. I’m seeing double. I prefer to just focus on the main broadcast and then watch the ASL performance later.
But last night, when watching the halftime performance by Shaheem, I couldn’t understand what he was signing. Honestly, it was like watching a fake interpreter. After the performance, I saw Howard and Alexis all hyped up, hugging the performers. They said, “Great job!”
Why were they jumping up and celebrating? I feel that they simply don’t care.
I think they probably already orgasmed from seeing the words, “National Association of the Deaf” appear in the pregame ceremonies. Also, Kashar felt satisfied after she saw her business products displayed with free advertising to millions of viewers. It’s worth it. All the hate and the criticism from the Deaf community. It’s worth it. They wipe their tears with a Love Sign jacket.
I feel that they are out of touch with the Deaf community who are watching from home. They don’t understand how we feel. Looking on social media, it’s easy to see the real frustration that Deaf people feel and express. But they don’t get it.
Would I rather have nothing? No ASL at all? Maybe. Maybe nothing is better.
But as long as Howard wants to use the NAD platform to get fun trips to Super Bowls, and as long Kashar is allowed to use her business to get free exposure, we’ll keep on seeing hype and end up getting the short end of the stick.
I’m sad to say this, but nothing will change as long as the NAD is in bed with the NFL and Love Sign. Howard has been the CEO of NAD since 2011. Maybe it’s time for a change? Change the bedsheets? Change the mattress?

Hearing interpreter here. After the Super Bowl ended, I did a quick search online to see if I could find the ASL halftime performance, and I found one with no sound. I watched it for all of about 1 minute and thought: "Wow, I know my receptive skill has gone downhill since Covid as I haven't worked much since then, but you'd think I'd understand SOMETHING!" So I have yet to find a version with the sound, but at least I feel better, cuz if YOU didn't understand the interpreter well, then that would explain why I couldn't. After the anthems were sung, I turned the TV off and only turned it back on when I heard my hubby say the halftime show was on, watched that, then turned it off again. Shouldn't have even watched at all as I'm SO. SO. SO FURIOUS they can announce the interpreters , but then never show them! This should get national coverage, as this is CLEARLY, I repeat CLEARLY disparaging the Deaf community!! What an INCREDIBLE SLAP IN THE FACE to EVERY Deaf person!! They might as well have brought a few Deaf people onto the field, and when they announced the interpreters, show on camera the Deaf people being blindfolded before the performance began!! That's symbolic of what happened by not showing the interpreters on the network tv that everyone has access to!!!!! Could you imagine the outrage from people if they saw that happen??!!!!! I mean, doing something like that would definitely and clearly be consider a form of ABUSE!!! Could you imagine the INCREDIBLE AND IMMEDIATE OUTRAGE if the CBS executives and all those involved in making the decision to NOT show the interpreters had NO SOUND during the entire Super Bowl???!! What would they do??? And the Deaf community could tell them...."Ohhhhh.... -- don't worry, there are captions, right?? Just READ what the announcers are saying about the game! Just READ what Reba or Post Malone or Usher was singing-- that's good enough, right???!!!??" How long do we think those executives would put up with that, with no audio???!! (Can you sense MY outrage??!!!!). If this happened to any other group, there would be immediate national attention!! SOOOOO incredibly maddening!! I hear it all the time as an interpreter!! I have hearing people tell me they don't know why a Deaf person needs an interpreter cuz they can read lips or 'our company provides captions on the training videos'......😡😡!!!! (EDITED: Not ALL hearing people have that mindset. There ARE hearing people who get it!)
I will soon be uploading new videos on my channel, and each one will be interpreted in addition to having captions. I also intend to gradually re-upload my past published videos with an ASL interpreted version. Perhaps in doing so, I can do my small part in making people aware that captioning is NOT adequate! PS: watching the interpreters for the musical performances, esp the halftime show, is helpful to even ME, a hearing person, as I can't understand a word that Usher and these other performers say. It's typical of musicians these days. I'm not alone in that-- there are even Gen Z'ers who have told me they hafta look up the lyrics to songs in order to memorize them and sing along with their fave musicians! So watching the interpreters is beneficial for more than those who are deaf!
Excuse me, but I am a hearing person who does NOT know ASL. I am also one of the first who sent out complaints to the entities, like CBS, because of the slight of the deaf performers. ELON musk is an idiot. I enjoy watching sign because it is beautiful and expressive to the point that I think I can understand some of it. Please, don't judge us all.
Where did you find the video, what did you search? I'm hearing a lot about it but I am unable to find it and would like to see what everyone is talking about
@@tazmom0 (edited: I DID edit my original comment to hopefully not be directed to *all* hearing people, but rather those who made the decision to not show the interpreters) I apologize--I didn't mean for that to sound as if I'm criticizing all hearing people. I was trying to make a point. Perhaps I should have said that for the CBS executives and all those hearing people who made the decision to not show the ASL performers/interpreters, we take away their devices and TVs and give them a TV that has no audio, then tell them to just read the captions on everything they watch because if only captions are 'good enough' for the deaf, it's good enough for them.
Unfortunately, as I stated above, in the many years I've been interpreting, there are way too many people who have the same mindset as Elon. Heck, even *I* as someone fluent in ASL has, in the past/my early years as a new interpreter, wondered why captioning wasn't adequate. But when I make a comparison as I have, it makes it much more clear, at least to me, why it's so important for EVERYONE-Deaf AND hearing- to have access to a form of their language that makes communication easiest: ASL for the Deaf, and spoken English for the hearing!
Thank you for supporting the Deaf community, and again, I'm so sorry and hope you can forgive me -- I meant no ill to you or any other hearing people who understand why interpreters are needed and access to them vital!
@@andrewcheevers2788 I had found a video on RUclips not too long after the game was done--it had no audio. However, I just looked again and it must have been taken down for copyright issues because I'm fairly certain it was video that someone copied from their screen. RUclips is pretty quick to take down those videos.
I hope to see the day when everyone is included at ALL times. I knew nothing about the deaf community until I saw CODA. I learned a few basic signs here on RUclips so that I am able to communicate if the opportunity ever presents itself. I just really love Daniel Durant and I tuned in just to see him sign, so I was livid when they didn't show his performance.

Also significant is the fact that Alexis Kashar threatened to sue 58 Creativity over their usage of ILY. This was crab theory in action.
Thank you for standing up for our community. I completely agree with you. I didn't have captions on when I was watching asl halftime, I cringed at his performance, and I was complaining that I couldn't understand anything he was signing. This mess needs a lot of cleaning to do.
Way to go Alex! Thank you for saying something!! Proud of you. We need more deaf people to stand up for us and not just follow stupid rules and bow down to sponsers etc. I’m proud of you!
Well said, Alex! Scandalous situation between NAD, NFL have to STOP or otherwise get NAD out of business and replaced them with all new name,system,people,etc

What didn’t seem right, either, was how Shaheem discussed last year’s performance on a morning show. He said his performance was much better and involved more of dancing.
I am a recent learning of ASL, and I was inspired by Justine’s interpretations. I watched her RUclips video several times.
After showing the interpreters for each performer, I told my wife that we would not see the interpreters again. Frustrating. AFL and NAD together…but for nothing good.

Well said! If NAD and Alexis Kashar threaten Alex to take down this video, Alex should not remove this video, period. This is his own opinion, not yours or mine. Everyone has their own opinions. It is okay to agree or disagree with anyone but be mindful and don’t attack others if they have different opinions. This is so wild!
I do recommends that you all recording this video and keep posting it in every social media platforms if they manage to get this video to be removes…
Also post it just before Super Bowl every year & hashtag NFL & many mores to get them to recognise the complaints from deaf communities around in USA!

“Performance” is the word that they are using. They used that word is a problem.
If we want “interpreters” and then we need to get ones who will do well. Last year, I think the lady did very well and attempted to follow the original idea.
If we want performers, last night it was what we got. I think it should be Usher’s performance, not Shaheem’s.
Oxford Dictionary defines “performance” as “an act of staging or presenting a play, concert, or other form of entertainment.”
Hence, they did the play, not interpreting well. 🤷♂️
Alex, I appreciate your opinion and everyone’s. We need to address this and rid of the word “performance” first which will be a good start.
I agree by what you said about Super Bowl. I noticed CBS cut off the TV as Daniel Durant was about singing ASL for Reba McEntire during Super Bowl. I am disappointed at CBS. That TV company doesn't care about Deaf company. NAD must to find a new CEO to replace Howard Rosenblum immediately. Alexis Kashar's ILY business should be taken down. I absolutely have no idea Kashar is friends with Marlee Matlin. Kashar's jewelry business is too expensive.

Thank you for sharing. I would like to see Howard leaves his position and Alexis takes her business elsewhere not at the Super Bowl. It would be less disastrous. Alex has the rights to express his opinions and everyone should respect and states their own opinions. There is no need to stir the pot.
Alex thank you sharing news to deaf community to see what really going on surprise me the NAD did not check the history of NAD specially in the magazine NAD’s Deaf American in the seventies!

I did search online with RUclips, Nad or Dpan for ASL. I feel frustrated as Shamee not right ASL with Ludarcis. I not understand and unclear. My favorite see sentence Lyrics music then see asl.

I agree with you completely Alex, perhaps NAD needs new leadership because deaf community isn’t getting the necessary exposures to improve deaf accessibility. From my perspective how many companies are Deaf friendly? NFL isn’t Deaf friendly, think about it history proves itself when was the last Deaf athlete drafted or playing in the NFL.
Or even in administration any Deaf?
Wish captions were available. Im learning ASL and someone recommended the daily moth to me so that I could enhance my receptive skills and eventually be able to understand and read sign without captions. Plus I'm Genuinely just interested do you know this person's opinion about the Super bowl ASL disaster.

It seems like it's not captioned because it's an op-ed and he went "full ASL"? As others said you can see the transcript in the first comment, but also the transcript is always up on the dailymoth website as soon as the video goes live on any social media platform.

this is why I don't involve anything like this issue between deafies vs NAD, Alexis Kashar, Shasheem, and others. I enjoy minding my own business and working on my content and deaf movie, filmed in VRChat. Who am I? I am nobody. just as invisible as Drax.

Alex, I absolutely concurred with you about your opinion and thought about Super Bowl 100%! The conscience would be haunted NAD and the CEO of NAD for doing poorly. I understood how the deafies in the deaf communities got frustrated about not televising three deaf interpreters on TV. I missed that parts about three hearing singers singing three National songs. I will look up on RUclips later. So the conscience will be haunted at NAD! It was unfortunately sad!

Haha. Yep, I totally agree! There’s will always be under sweep the deaf issues and how many deaf fans did go to the Super Bowl every year ? Maybe 2-5 fans. If deaf fans filled with in half of stadiums every year and guaranteed deaf asl performance would be on national television! To be honest with you I’m tired of see deaf being wimp and we are very small deaf population!!! In my opinion NAD is laughable and will always be weaker …. But, it’s all facts and you knew it !!! Alex, you need to do more editorials in ASL. That was a good one where you pointed out instances to support your opinion. The Daily Moth is already recognized by many in the community as the choice of news in ASL. With Callie taking over the main news, maybe you can do more ASL editorials. It doesn’t have to be just you. Callie and Renca can do their own editorials too. As a journalist myself who is deaf, I want to see that happen! Come on y’all can do it!
yes alex i agree with u they are lettin it go too far now its not reallyfair we love superbowls but we want to see our deafies sign too why couldnt they put reba and daniel nearbyinstead of so far apart others i didnt see much of other s signing gosh upsettign as for the super bowl half time usher himself does know signs i dont get why he ddint sign at all in one of his songs no other deafie there singing along either gosh
If we want to change the sheets with NAD, start with state association by attending to state conference, vote the right delegates to represent every states at NAD conference. Bring the new business in order and vote the officers out and come up with a better officers. Then, we can oust Howard.
It definitely shows there is a general lack of understanding of what it means to be Deaf. If camera operators drift away distracted, if the people in the control rooms shift to other video feeds, what-do? My ASL 3 class, only a few people, many more people in the first class. If you want people to see good sources of teaching ASL, put them in your channel list, there's a few obscure ones that teach far better than some of the big channels that move their lips far more than their hands, or keep a blank face during signing. I've found a few good ones and put them in my list, every little bit helps.

NAD has very poor organization that isnt really help deaf people.... NAD was discriminated me and my wife because of things that we did discussed with them but they refused to help us... thats why NAD need to be removed forever....

I completely agree with you Alex, in my opinion, the CEO of NAD and LoveSign has the biggest ego and true colors. NAD doesn't care about small needed accessibility but made a lot of money and profit. Can you imagine he loves more money than accessibility? And more fancy VIP thing to travels to sport anywhere. I can see how Howard is showing true color. Also, Kasher is such an evil person and spoiler mommy, because she sues someone it is the same love sign shape, and why anyone can't cut off a hand? how to different? that's full of BS. That's why I'm not fan of the NFL Super Bowl. Need to someone to better person than Howard and full support accessibility and listen to deaf community their needed.

I knew there was money talk involved and there was nothing that the Deaf community could do. My question is why do Deaf celebrities agree to perform knowing the past history. They should have a voice for us. I know Marlee Matlin tried but no one listened to her either.

My personal thoughts... why is there not enough effort to go inside the production room as a deaf consultant every year to observe and advise these hearing people handling the live screen to ensure there's a small screen appear on bottom right for the ASL performers? I do agree that NAD / Alexis are losing touch with the deaf community...they're failing at making sure there's accessibility on live TV. I do not want to see our ASL performers being "segregated" from the live TV anymore. Where's the equal access just the same as hearing? Enough is enough.
Be honest.. Howard need to resign immediately!!! Get David Reynolds.. because he is very strong on deaf community..

Well, since the music on the stage, people who sang and danced got paid which was supposed to film them as professional. Deaf and some hearing dance on the small stage or floor is not get paid and they wanted to volunteer because they got free tickets. I don't complain about not being able to watch ASL and dance. I understand that film is made for professional music purposes and I can't blame them because they can't film both at the professional stage and small spirit deaf and hearing dance and song simultaneously. SO, THAT MEANS THE DEAF COMMUNITY IS RESPONSIBLE FOR FILMING THEM AND POSTING ON FACEBOOK, IG, OR ANY SM IF THEY WANT TO. IT IS NOT REQUIRED. I AM satisfied with the caption.
World sometime suck to reject to deaf and hard of hearing and community all time. Never worth to them.
