    Since you asked; the "takes his own rebound , switch hands and scores" deserves number 1. The "behind the backboard" is hard but the IQ and reflexes to know where the ball will rebound before it hits the rim...and all the conclusion to it is harder.
    Great reaction!

    That was Robert Parrish. 00. The Chief!.
    There was a dribble you missed. It wasn't a walk. 😉 Glad you caught it.
    The play against Xavier was the exact play Larry TOLD Xavier he was going to do....basically saying...KNOWING doesn't have anything to do with STOPPING ME.
    The offensive rebound against THAT team, then the falling out of bounds switch to left with a swish...harder.
    Clutch plays separate the men from the boys, in Larry's view. That's why there's game winning buzzer beaters. Plus, most of those Larry told the other what's about to happen.
    And no...Larry may not be able to guard Jordan without help...but Jordan cant guard Larry WITH help...or AS THE HELP either. So...😊

    They could almost do a highlight reel of just Bird passing through opponent's legs. 😁
    And Parish knew that Bird would find a way to get that pass to him if he got open with a path to the basket.
    -- Oh, there's an opponent in Bird's way. ? No problem. -- Heads up reaction and bucket by Parish! 👍

    N.10 was a winning shot on Magic in the finals, fade away unblockable splash :D
    7:10 was the greatest steal ever, 5 seconds left losing a playoffs game to Detroit, Larry steals it and passes it to DJ for the win with 1 second left

  • @GibsonHeavy
    @GibsonHeavy 2 года назад +7

    When he intercepted the pass to win against the Pistons, he had his shot just blocked. He picked himself off the ground, on the other side of the court, prior to steeling the pass. When he did the switch hand, left handed layup, he was rebounding his own shot.
    When Larry Bird practiced his shooting, he wouldn't stop until, the ball hitting the net made a certain sound. Most people would be thrilled to be able to consistently swish the ball.

    People tend to be impressed by game winners because ultimately the object of the game is to win, not show off. In my view, the steal against Detroit was his best play ever. It was game 5 of the '87 ECF against Detroit. Up to that point the series was even, and this game was pivotal because they were going back to Detroit for game game 6. Boston had lost the ball to Detroit with 5 seconds left. Isiah Thomas inbounded the ball when seemingly out of nowhere Bird swooped in, picked Isiah's pocket, somehow managed to stay on his toes and inbounds, saw Dennis Johnson out of the corner of his eye and hit him for the winning layup with time running out. Boston ultimately won the series, and they would have lost it had Bird not made that play. Also, that fade away shot against the double team (another game winner) was one Bird called. He told Xavier McDaniel he was getting the ball, told him the exact spot where he was going to get it and that he was going to shoot it in his face. Then he did it. After he made it, he said, "Damn, still two seconds left." Yah, he wanted to shoot it with ZERO on the clock. Bird was a BAD man.

  • @cindyknudson2715
    @cindyknudson2715 2 года назад +4

    In those last three examples he is actually behind the backboard when he shoots the shot.
    That first one, literally, right behind the backboard. The fact that he stops on a dime to not go out of bounds before immediately lobbing it up and over and in. Easy peasy. (Whether it counted or not, it was legit.)
    On the next one, as he grabs that rebound, he is continuing to move out of bounds while in the air. By switching it to his left he keeps the ball in front of the backboard while he, himself is behind it. Lovely, "easy", left-handed bucket.
    And, on what they designated as #1 - there's an alternate angle of that shot that I have seen elsewhere, taken from that corner. Bird is so close to the baseline there in the corner that the edge of the backboard is obscuring a good part of the basket. Two defenders with him, AT the buzzer, half a hoop to shoot at, no problem, Bucket.

    Larry is THE clutchest player EVER!!
    Also….Larry’s bball IQ is so high that he can make plays regardless of the number of defenders, no matter how much traffic, he can thread that needle to his teammate.
    Also, you missed Larry’s dribble. Don’t worry, everybody does.

    The best part about that double teamed shot against the Sonics is before the play, Larry told his defender exactly what he was gonna do. "I'm gonna get the ball right there and shoot it in your face"

    00 was Robert Parrish. I always thought he had traveled there too! Glad you broke that down and "exonerated" him. :)
    That steal was against my Bad Boys. Eastern finals 1987, game 5. Games were tied at 2-2. Isaiah Thomas was inbounding the ball with 5 seconds left, up by 1. All he had to do was pass it to a teammate and run out the clock. Bird sneaked in, grabbed the ball, passed it to Johnson for a score, all inside of 5 seconds. Won by 1 instead of losing by 1. Went on to win the series 4-3. Fair to say that that play was the difference between winning and losing the entire series.

    I'm with you on the question of what belongs on the list. Important (ie game-winning clutch shots) are good, but if I were making the list I'd go for the *fun* plays. There's one I saw on TV waaaay back in the day but I never have seen online... Larry plows into a group of 3 or 4 defenders, there's this huge tangle, and then all of a sudden Larry's arm pokes out of the mess and tosses in a beautiful hook.

    Larry has my single favorite factor in a player: he would rather die than quit. The idea of quitting makes players like that physically ill. Their work ethic and hustle are epic.
    Jerry Rice in the NFL and Pete Rose in MLB were like that. Jerry Rice is a GREAT story about working harder than the next guy. Rookies used to work out with him in his later years and come away in awe.
    Pete Rose was nicknamed "Charlie Hustle" because he played at 100%, 100% of the time.

    Heres my case for Magic as the GOAT. As a Rookie, he went into Philly and against Daryl Dawkins and Tree Rollins Played center, Power Forward and Guard, and without Kareem who was in L.A. with a migrane. Scored 42 points and 15 rebounds. To win the NBA Final. Then won it 4 more times. A 6'9 point guard who only got better each year. Am I biased? of course, i grew up in Vegas and was a Laker fan. Bird was the truth, but Magic could do it all. And to me, to be the GOAT, You have to be able to play all 5 positions on the court. If you cant? Your just the greatest Guard, Or Greatest Forward Or center. Magic could play every position and win. Jordan couldnt play Center or power forward. Bird? Maybe, but to me, Magic is the GOAT.Great channel

    • @mrho4speed
      @mrho4speed Год назад

      FJ - I will respect your opinion but I disagree and have Bird over Magic. In game 6 Magic jumped center at the start of the game but did not play center. Jim Chones for LA guarded Dawkins and held Dawkins to 14 points. Kareem was also voted the FMVP AFTER Magic's great game 6 but because Kareem was not present the voters were asked to change their votes so Magic would win the award - see "Kareem" pages 140-141. Magic was not a good defender and the zone he played at MSU did not prepare him for the NBA and Magic needed special coaching - see "My Life" pages 100-101. Bird made 3 all defensive teams ( 2nd team) early in his career and in 83 finished tied for 3rd place for the DPOY award. Bird led the league in defensive win shares 4 times and was 7 times in the top five. Bird was once 2nd in DRTG and 6 times was in the top ten in DRTG. Magic never made an all defensive team his entire career. Bird created the 50-40-90 club and did it 2 seasons back to back and over the 4 seasons of 85,86,87, and 88 actually averaged 50-40-90 over those 4 seasons. Magic never shot 50-40-90 during his career. For those who doubt Bird's ability to play defense here is a link to a photo from the November 9th issue of Sports Illustrated from page 84 showing Bird blocking Kareem's skyhook. vault.si.com/vault/1981/11/09/70982#&gid=ci0258c132a001278a&pid=70982---102---image

He still has the games played record, and he'll have it for a long time. LeBron would have to play another 4 full seasons to get to it. He's a Hall of Famer and a legend in his own right. When I played, there were times if my shot was off, most of the time you would know where it would go off the rim, I was taught to chase that ball to pass or shoot again...This should be #1 so far. Where I was good in any sport was I could use either hand equally as well, same with my feet, kick a football for field goal with either one. My longest field goal was 55 yards my junior year. Now I am too old for sports, but still can write with either hand.

    great plays can also be personal.
    what one sees as great others may
    see as average. except that everything
    Larry Legend did was "great".

    Bird may be the greatest PURE player ever. But I still have Jordan as the GOAT.

    The over the backboard shot didn't count... probably why it's not #1

    Larry Bird did NOT travel, he dribbled but his body was blocking the view of the dribble.

    What? He took a dribble before the lay-up. Too quick for many to see. But not a good athlete. lol.

    Traveling: DUDE, even if it WAS a travel, refs and officials don't catch everything, you have a racial complex. How many BLACK players in the NFL or NBA commit fouls, penalties etc and get away with it?? I accept your apology, though mentioning that Bird was "white" had NOTHING to do w the play... but if you want to work on your sh#t, the main point is... you're LOOKING for discrimination, or looking for reasons to lessen what Bird is accomplishing. We're all a little racist on some level, even if we try to be... but I respect that you're working on it.
