- The McKenzie River is only a short drive up the pass from my home on the edge of Oregon’s Three Sisters Wilderness. Lucky for me, this backyard treasure is one of my favorite rivers in all the world to float, fish and film. When Chris Daughters told me that the McKenzie was on, he had a day off guiding, and his son, Cash, could be available for a T-Motion filming day…I was packed and ready in minutes. The McKenzie River is a cold, clear, fast-flowing mountain river with a lava rock bed and deep, technical pools full of trout. It’s not an easy river to float, fish or film. Maybe that’s why I love it so much! It tests your mettle, no matter who you are.

Filming “McKenzie River Mettle” had me perched on the back of Chris’ drift boat, balancing my camera on my shoulder and hanging on through rapids as he expertly guided his son, Cash, through the technical McKenzie waters for a day of fishing. Owner of The Caddis Fly in Eugene, Oregon, Chris has raised his son to be an angler like himself. This film documents a day on this unique river, father and son, in their most natural and seasoned positions as father-guide and son-angler. It was fun to film and I hope it’s a tribute to father’s everywhere on Father’s Day 2021. Thanks to Chris Daughters, to Greg Nespor (for rowing the camera boat) and to the companies who help support the T-Motion film to make it all possible.

Flyfishing is one of the greatest gifts to share with others. The catching is merely the cherry on top. This video makes my heart happy. Thank you for sharing.
Doesn't get any better than father and son on the water! Great video!
This video is beautiful. Great music, perfectly shot and father and son fishing is always touching. Love it.
Nice work Cash. Your dad almost broke a oar with that down tree. Great work as always Chris
Nice to see a kid without a phone.
I love your videos, nothing else comes close. My son has been on my back sense he was was 5 months old while we Wade the rivers. Can't wait till he's older and we can share these moments! Thanks for great footage!!!!
Thanks Joey!
Hello from a 5th generation Mckenzie River resident and currently live here still in my hometown on 23 acres in the woods in McKenzie Bridge. Two of my uncles have been fishing guides and my grandpa and great grandpa were guides and expert fly fisherman.
Thanks for another great glimpse at the wonders of trout fishing! I will fish the Mac one day.
Thanks for watching!!!
To all the Dad’s that took us fishing, like my father did with me, not on the McKenzie, but the Deschutes, 55 years ago. Your physical body is gone, but those memories, oh those memories, they are there forever and are accessed everyday. Happy early Father’s Day Dad!
This is great. Thanks for this and thanks for watching!!!

Made tears come to my eyes 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏amen
AMEN!
Thanks for shooting, editing and sharing! Going to give this river a try in a couple of weeks for the first time as a 62 y/o native before we head east for the big bugs in May.
То что это отец и сын видно по ушам сразу :) Молодцы!!!! Ну и как всегда, отличное видео... Спасибо!
Да вы правы, ха-ха. Большое спасибо за поддержку моего канала. Примите комментарий. Спасибо!
Excellent film and edit! amazing interpretation of a father and son relating in the outdoors!!
Thank you very much!
I only wish I had the same opportunity with my father. He got me hooked on fishing but it was I who has since continued fishing but now he n the fly with my children, nieces, and nephews. Mainly here in Saskatchewan trout fishing opportunities are not as prevalent but plenty of chances for pike and still water trout angling. Thanks for these videos.
Wow, looked like a great trip. Cash is all pro, he made it look too easy. Nice job on the oars.
Awesome Video, Awesome "Father & Son Action" thank you for uploading this gorgeous Video.
Thank you!
Incredible videography and a very heart warming story that I’m sure touches all dads and sons as well even if they don’t know it yet. Well done and thanks for sharing.
Glad you enjoyed it
Beautiful landscapes l congratulate you for your exellent productions
Thank you so much Roblan!
4:05 Big Auburn Squatch tree peaking!
Wow amazing
Thanks
Named for Donald MacKenzie, cousin of the explorer who reached the Pacific 12 years before Lewis and Clark, and my several greats uncle.
It"s a winston Air 2 9' #5 ?
Which fly line is it ?
Yep, Air 2, Scientific Anglers Distance taper. Thanks for watching.
Beautiful 🥰
Thank you! 😊
No fly 🎣🐟😎👍👏👏👏🎥
So after you boat down the river, how do you get back to your original spot?
Good question. They use a shuttle company to bring the car with the trailer back down river to meet them. Or they do the shuttle on their own, walk, ride a bike or hitchhike.
Right on! Thanks for answering my question. Love you guys
How much Dramamine did you take filming this?
Haha. Good one... you get it!
Waders and no life jacket in a boat in a dangerous river , really ??
It's dangerous, we agree. Should've been wearing a jacket.
It is one of my great regrets that my son was never really interested in fishing, or indeed, any countryside activities.
Anyone else notice the dobsonfly nymph?
Nothing quite beats the father and son relationship when it comes to fly fishing! my dad and I are much the same!🎣
You got that right! I totally agree. Thanks for watching and the great comment.
Wow amazing
Thanks for watching
The McKenzie, where drift boats began.
You guys do amazing work. Cinematographer to angler. Question. Where do you get your soundtracks for your movies. I am both an angler and a guitarist. Your bodies are like Christmas a birthday and a coming of age all in one shot. Keep it up.
James Horton.
Your movies. Not your bodies.
I (and a whole heck of a lot of people) use FirstCom
Thanks all Dads who got us fly fishing!! My old man is 69 and we still fish a lot together. The roles of him “coaching” me up and making sure I’m safe have reversed at this point with him being almost 70 and multiple knee surgeries. He’s a battler and can still spend 12 hours on the Lower D scaling cliffs down to the river all day long catching beautiful redsides. Even though we get out quite often, every day feels like the luckiest day of my life. Fishing and enjoying wilderness with him all I could ever ask for and if the stars align I hope to be doing with him for another decade or two.
Great video as always!
Wooooow New film, tankyou catchmagazine
Thank you Angel. Really appreciate your support!
I've seen that guy on some fly tying videos for Caddis Fly Shop
Chris who is rowing the boat is the owner of the shop along with his wife Shauna.
Great video, but sure would have loved to see them wearing life jackets.
We agree...
Awesome vid!
wonderful sharing with your son...I recognize that you're both very experienced but I was still surprised given the pace of the river that your son wasn't wearing PFD.
Yes, He should have been wearing a jacket even if he was with his dad who is one, if not the most experienced guides on that river. I agree with you! Thanks!
Just need to hit one rock or log and he would go flying!
Excellent work! That was some amazing footage
Beautiful video, love the Father and Son relationship.
I agree. Watching a father and son on the river together is something very special.
Great video! Love it!
Thanks for watching!
Excellent cinematography.
Awesome! Todd, you just keep knocking them out of the park. Very moving video, thanks.
Great work by angler and boatman!
I agree. They are a great team!
Love the McKenzie River. My Grandparents lived in McKenzie Bridge for years and every summer we crushed that river! Thanks for the memories
You are very lucky!
My father and the niangua in Missouri. . . what a childhood!
Nice friend 👍
I live in Eugene and drift the McKenzie all the time... I always thought the McKenzie was tough but because of my skill level. Good to know others have the same opinion as me!
You are right... McKenzie is not an easy river to fish. Chris just makes it look easy!
35 years living in western Oregon and I've never once fished this river. I always have blinders on, and head straight to the Deschutes.
It’s a beautiful river. You should check it out this summer. Thanks for watching!
Great vid. Best I've seen for a while. Awesome angler.. rumble young man rumble!!💪🎣🐟
Thank you!
What was the nymph rig at about minute 7?
I nearly lost a son who was stubborn about wearing his life jacket. After the close call he never argued with me again about life safety. It was hard to watch the boy in this film fishing in rough water without a life jacket. I’m disappointed on several levels with this film because of the lack of safety and the wrong message this will send to young anglers.
A close friend slipped off his kick-boat last summer on Strawberry reservoir in central Utah. He was not wearing his life vest and nearly drowned. Life is far to precious to risk in such a haphazard manner. In a split second you won’t have anymore father and son time if the unthinkable happens. Please use more caution and safety in the future.
I wondered the same thing...
In the sweet spot for west side rivers.
Someday I’ll take my son or daughter to a trip like this , we have plenty of rivers here in kashmir with zillions of trouts
I bet it’s beautiful!
@@CatchMagazine indeed
Great!
What a beautiful memory!
Good stuff
Thanks Tony!!
wow amazing footage
“And he gets to become the expert…….”
Very nice.
Nice video
And once again a superb presentation. Thank you Mr Moen
Thanks Don!
Take your children fishing, something my Dad and I never did.
They will remember.
Yes, getting kids outdoors is more a important than ever these days!!! Thanks for watching.
I took my son ever other weekend from the time he was 1.5 years old he’s 27 now . I also took him camping and canoeing and fishing . We did all types of fishing bait , spinning and fly fishing trolling . My 91 year old father gave me more problems than my son growing up he also love nature and wild places
Truly blessed.........
The McKenzie really is an amazing river. Thanks!
Wonderful!
Many thanks!
I love seeing a father giving off second-hand smoke to his son. Wholesome
This is true... I would have to agree!
Nothing better than passing that knowledge on to your son. I did mine and on some of that same water. Good video Chris. Byrd.
