  • Hey guys, if you like my videos, please subscribe! Yea this one got a bit out of frame but just at the beginning :/
The Pilates reformer is such a magical tool for psoas care! Versus any other stretching/trigger/ deep tissue option-- this is the very best way to encourage the hip flexor into its natural length.
With a co-contraction of the core and glutes, we create STABILITY in the pelvis and spine. Then the hip flexors can be properly managed with precision. Manual therapists should not have to repeatedly dig through the organs to 'release' a psoas! We can take care of the vast majority of issues on the reformer.
After extending the hip (not hyper-extending), add a slight spine extension (stack) your middle back. You now have the psoas completely under your control. You can work on length and stability with any of the lunging/kneeling/pressing moves. It's amazing how the posture muscles and hip flexors are so deeply intertwined.
    Chicken vs the egg:
Does poor posture make the tips tight and dysfunctional, or do tight hips pull the posture into kyphosis??
Either way, you can unravel your clients so fast with these details....PLEASE approach this move with caution :)

Thanks! This was really helpful context for why my pilates teacher encourages this stretch for me.

Is there any way to do this without a reformer?

Yes, I suppose you could use a dolly or a flat surface that rolls, like a skateboard? Problem is the springs help keep it safe, you don't necessarily want a free rolling device unless you keep your core super co-contracted.
