One of my favourite episodes ever.. so much loss! Losing Ecbert nearly hurt as much as Ragnar for me personally.. They're both so great - Travis Fimmel and Linus Roach are unreal!
Linus Roach is very Shakespearean with his delivery. He could play a Shakespeare tragic hero, no problem - maybe he has (I haven't checked!).

Same Ivar is by far my favourite character on Vikings and he's not one dimensional he has his good and bad moments and you can understand why he does the things that he does it makes him more realistic too theres too many one dimensional boring characters in TV shows and alot of times i feel people don't fully understand Ivar's character so they just hate him because he isn't this one dimensional unrealistic good guy that they wanna root for and for the haters that hate that Ivar is on a rise don't know that in history he is the most famous and rutheless Viking and in fact the oldest son who actually lead The Great Heathen Army and blood eagled Aelle not Bjorn because Bjorn failed to defeat Aelle just for the haters i still like Bjorn but Ivar has really taken over the show for me and i love it

Yay! On to season five. I personally loved it, others didn't. But it's still finding it's footing after Ragnar's death, and transitioning other characters into the "main roster". I think Eric more so than the others, will really enjoy it. Especially Ivar's story.

In the first episode of season I already had my suspicions on where Floki was headed. I did not know but where I'm from we learned all about Raven-Floki in school. I'm so glad the guys are reacting to this show it's one of my all time favourite show and soon they will follow Floki to the land of ice and fire

This show makes you feel like there's no good guy or bad guy. You root for every character. Especially Ivar, he's a psychopath but I fucking love him as much as Ragnar.
It's weird how amazing Viking PR has been through the years. The Norse warriors come into England and start killing and raiding and then when they see an English "warrior-priest" that will likely combat the Vikings and drive them off the island these guys are saying "Oh he must be the villain".
If you know the precursor to the Viking raids then a priest is undeniably the enemy.

Well, it's very likely one of the main reasons. The Massacre at Verden, where Charlemagne force converted thousands of Saxons, destroyed their most precious holy site and then murdered them all, happened only 11 years prior to the Lindisfarne raid. I suspect the Saxons probably told these tales to the Danes (Ragnar was a Dane, not a Norwegian) and they decided to exact their revenge on Christians by attacking their holy sites. Lindisfarne is portrayed as one of the only monastery attacks by the Vikings in this period of the show but over the course of about 50 years there are dozens attacked and raided all over the UK and Ireland. The Danes and Saxons saw the invading Christian Franks (who were previously Germanic pagans) as a deadly force that would not only wipe out their religion but their people (as shown by Verden). You also have to remember that the Anglo-Saxons are just that, a mix of the Germanic peoples known as the Angles and Saxons. The Saxons, after experiencing the Massacre at Verden, must have been furious that their fellow people would convert to a belief that does this to them.
The Danes built incredible fleets partly because they knew on land they could not defeat the well equipped and organised Franks. It should also be mentioned that Frankish insults did not stop with Charlemagne's massacre. The Frankish king at the time gave Ragnar land and then took it away from him because he had lost the king's favour...which could mean anything, including Frankish deception. Ragnar likely led the siege of Paris because of this insult too.
Tl;dr:
Attacks on England likely started due to revenge against Christians but became about wealth, power and land.
Attacks on France likely started due to a broken contract between the Frankish king and Ragnar, leading to the siege and capture of Paris.
Diutisc Frituom - I wonder though. I'm English so I try not to be biased because I'm an Anglo-Saxon as much as a Norweign is Norse, that is to say, not at all. However, it's my understanding that aside from Anglo-Saxons waring with themselves, the Welsh kingdoms and the Picts and Gaels, they weren't really notable expansionists and weren't at all interested in territories outside of Britain and unlike how this show presented it at the start of the series, the Anglo-Saxons had relations with both the Norse and western European Kingdoms. The English only started crusading and looking for conquest after the Normans took over leadership.
I suppose it's kind of like how because the US and the USSR were enemies, the USSR looked at all capitalist nations as enemies even if they were neutral.
The Anglo-Saxon kingdoms at that time are very new. The time between the fall of the Western Roman Empire and the Lindisfarne raid is only about 300 years. It was less than a century between the Romans leaving England (and leaving it defenceless...one of the main reasons why the native Britons could not win) and the Angles, Saxons and Jutes invading. The first king of Wessex was crowned as Cerdic in 519AD. This is only around 100-110 years after the Romans had left and probably only 50 years after the Angle-Saxon-Jute invasion. The Angles, Saxons and Jutes all fought the Britons but also fought among themselves as you said. They were also not invading and securing old Rome, they were essentially securing ancient Britannia with hints of Roman existence, meaning they had to settle, rebuild and create their own image before they could even consider expansion. It took them around 300 years to do this, that is why they did not expand or become a real threat to the Danes/Norse/Vikings for hundreds of years or even the first 50 years of raiding.

Also Aethewulf was such a badass in this episode. And that girl with Helga, so tragic :/ When I watched it for the first time I was so impressed with the girl, the bravery and her tragedy...

The reason I root for Ivar is because he is the only character on the show that isn't one dimensional and is interesting after ragnar died.

I like Ivar but if the show is building him up as Ragnars replacement as the new main character I don't think pitting him against Bjorn, Ragnars first born and a character we have followed since episode 1, was the best way to go about it.

Because they were granted special nicknames? I guess, but this show isn't as linear with historic events as you'd think. But these were names they got from birth, and not something they earned, like Bjørn did fighting the saxons.

Kinship was a big deal in Viking culture, killing someone was a crime against the victims family (rather than the modern idea of it being against the state). As such Kinslaying was a horrific thing in their culture as due to the expected kinship a murder against the family from within the family was looked down upon. Ivar such suffer greatly for what he did here.
However I doubt it, this show seems to be aiming at becoming The Ivar Show with him becoming a very central character with plot armour.
Not too happy about this departure from history in regards to Sigurd Snake-in-the-Eye but we'll see how Season 5 goes.
are you watching at the same time as Blind Wave? there's alot of changes from history Ivar should be the oldest son and he actually lead The Great Heathen Army and blood eagled Aelle not Bjorn in history Bjorn failed against Aelle also Lagertha is not Bjorn's mother Aslaug is and Athelstan was actually the first King of England there should be a son on Ragnar named Halfdan and Lothbrok is not a last name for the family or for Ragnar it's a nickname the same as Boneless and Ironside it means hairy breeches as Ragnar wore hairy trousers it should be Ragnarson as a last name if they were gonna have one also most these characters never met and lived at different times during history on the show we are in the 8th century but we have characters from the 9th and 10th century on the show also Lagertha was not that important irl as they've made her on here and finally Ragnar wasn't mr nice Vikings in history he actually didn't want his sons to have more fame as him so he put another person in power to try and make sure they don't have it

I am currently watching along with BW yeah, I had seen the first 3 seasons or so I think before that though.
Aye I'm aware of the historical inaccuracies although the time period isn't one I do a lot of reading up on. That sort of thing doesn't bother me as it tends to be the case with almost every historical based work of fiction. I was just saying what Ivar did would have been considered pretty horrendous generally by most of those present.

Just found you guys recently. Love your reactions! The scene where Ecbert killed himself, listen closely. Ecbert (and the viewers) hears the voices of all of the most important people in his life...EXCEPT Aethelwulf. To me, that says that he never really loved his son.

Didn't like Sigurd as an adult as his only role was to antagonize Ivar being an ass. But was disappointed with his character development. Sigurd born with snake in eyes, shows the only compassion as child and maturity when things are going to shit. They are setting him up to be opposite of Ivar personality who acts like asshole, killing kids, being spoiled. Ivar is still evil but develop him as a character as adult but Sigurd he just becomes a jerk as adult and nothing else. Historically he had much more success full life than just being killed like this so was disappointed.

I really wish some of you guys in the comments would consider the possibility that some of the viewers here haven't seen season 5.
Anyway I loved this episode so much. Ivar is my favorite. Though something to keep in mind and that people tend to overlook is that Ivar didn't set out to kill Sigurd. It's clear that Ivar has trouble controlling his impulses and he was furious. He didn't think, he just reacted. You can almost immediately after Ivar throws the axe see that he's in shock. The expression on his face was like "Holy shit, what did I just do?"
So if you regred killing your own brother you are no murderer anymore? He could litterally do something like this at any possible time.
And that's why I don't like Ivar even though he is a good written character.
Yannic Held I never said that makes it okay. Just trying to show that Ivar has a lot of layers to him that some people just refuse to see. Like this is one of those instances that demonstrates what's tragic about Ivar.
Blake Coppini I understand what you are saying and I see those layers but I personally just can't feel any sympathy towards a person who could litterally kill anyone at any point because he lost controll over his rage again.
Omg whoever edited this really messed up. We never saw Helga lying in the ground with Floki putting different grave goods around her for her trip to the afterlife! He also had some very moving lines in that scene. Honestly that was a poor decision.

Ivar is kind of interesting to watch, although he starts to grate with too much screen time. But I loathe him as a person. He's so pathetic, and he covers it with sadism and fake bravado. That's the worst combination.

Johnny Skinwalker Yeah, when they are together its amazing, but Ivar wanting to quarrel with Bjorn in every possible situation pisses me off.
Even though I would love Bjorn to be Ragnar's true heir due to him being the first born and the one we have connected with the longest, I knew about the real History even before watching the show. There is a reason Ivar is STILL known as one of the deadliest and smartest Vikings who ever lived. What Ragnar said to Ivar, for me, is foreshadowing the future.
"Out of all of my sons, it was you I wanted to bring here, and it is you that I believe is the most important to the future of our people." I'm not sure if he was the most important, but he sure was one of them.
"Use your anger intelligently and I promise you, my son, that one day, the whole world will know and fear Ivar, the Boneless." Even today we know his name and respect his greatness.

Up till this point I was leaning towards Ivar side but definitely not after this he's to petty with no control and if Ragnar was alive he'd be beyond ashamed of him...I stopped watching after this season the show wasn't the same after Ragnar then Helga but I'll continue with the boys hopefully Floki is present in season 5.
Ivar isn't petty he's a passionate viking in his own right. He immediately regretted killing his brother but like everyone has been saying Ivar has mental problems, he's floki before floki became slightly sane. Ivar is also trying to act out/follow what Ragnar said to him before his death. Don't get me wrong ivar seems like a complete tool still when his anger doesn't take over lol.
Well if history continues to dictate the show, it only gets worse. Much worse

I can't help but feel the Moorish girl (her name escapes me) was justified, entirely, in killing Helga. Helga had it coming. You can't invade someone's home for absolutely not a single reason, cut down, enslave, and rape everyone she's known, then think she's ever going to see you as a mother figure. If Helga actually had good intentions, she's probably try and convince her people to stop attacking and raping civilians, just a thought. I'm sure my personal belief, being a Muslim myself, affects how I see that particular issue too. It's hard for me to like a character, that's pagan, more or less kidnapping a random Muslim child whose mom was killed unjustly by her people. She should've listened to Floki and left her there. Off topic, sort of, I'm still confused as to why there was no defending garrison in the Andalusian town they raided. It's historically true that Andalusia (Muslim Spain) tended to have a small military as they focused more on culture and decadence, but in this time period, when they had *just* invaded and annexed Iberia, their army would've been huge and probably defending the frontier. I really hope in the new season or part that there's some other encounter with the Muslim empire or a Muslim kingdom where they aren't just killed without a fight because that's really not how history went with the Vikings and Muslims.

Tbh I don't think Helga was thinking straight with the whole Tanaruz thing. She had lost her only child and then was grieving that Floki won't let her have another one. And there's no way she could've influenced the male Vikings to not go around r4ping and pillaging - they did that to us here in England as well for years.
